Joe, it is interesting you mention that. I hadn't given the matter much thought, but since, as I say, there is some sort of program going in to the old hotel, I suspect some of my tax dollars have been brought to bear on the problems you have mentioned.
The family BBQ was great. No storms materialized and it was very pleasant outside. I eat hamburgers from restaurants and Drive-ins so much that I never make them at home. I can't tell you last time I had homemade ones before tonight. They were great along with corn on the cob, potato salad, and coleslaw. For desert we had cake and ice cream. One of the best meals I have had in a long time.
That is all for now. I may have some interesting RR related news tomorrow but I have to check on a few details first.

Good news for Walt: his eyes are doing just fine. Not so good for me: Doctor says I have the beginnings of catteracs (sp?) and I have to go back in three months to be tested for glaucoma. Not sure what our current temp is, but it sure is HOT. For supper tonight, we have: Spaghetti and meatballs with garden salad and your choice of bread sticks or garlic Texas toast. Well, according to the eye doctor; my "News" was better than CW's.....my prescription for glasses doesn't need to be changed, and my eyes are doing sort of fine..........after my cataract surgery in '03. I need to have minimal surgery on eyes within this next year to ensure cataracts are gone, don't come back, etc. I'm not sure I'm prepared for other things.

I became really aware of my cataracts a year and a half ago when I woke up after major surgery, and could not read the clock across the room--with my glasses on! After getting home, I found a really old pair of glasses (bifocals, not the trifocals I had been wearing for several years) that made it possible for me to see as I wanted to. As soon as I could, I went to our eye doctor, and learned (a) that such an operation can have an affect on cataracts and (b) that there was so little difference between those old glasses (except that they were bifocals) and the best new prescription that he said I did not need new glasses! Lately, I have had occasional trouble focussing on what I am reading, and went back last week--and, again, there was so little difference between what I was wearing and the best new prescription that there was no point in my getting new glasses--but I need to be careful about my sugar intake because a high blood sugar count can make cataracts bothersome (I have been told by my M. D. that I am a border-line diabetic).
We have had a cool day, with light rain in the morning (some areas around here have had heavy rain), and we expect clear skies before the weekend.

Good afternoon.
I'm off to a family BBQ this afternoon. Only about 10:30 this morning a thunder storm warning was issued for this afternoon. Right now it is 63° with a high of 73° later.
Railfans in the area got a nice treat this morning, if they have the City of Calgary heritage calendar. The picture for August is the former Ogden Hotel, just outside the Ogden Shops gate. It had been built to house single railway workers, then became a railway YMCA, a hotel, then an apartment building. For most of its' existence it housed what could be described as a "rough" crowd.
The oldest unsolved homicide in Calgary happened there. It was interesting when a year or so ago the Police declared the investigation closed. At the time of the murder the legal drinking age was 21, so when they made the announcement it was because the youngest person legally in the place would have been 100 years old.
They are now rehabbing and refurbishing the building to be housing and some sort of program facility for homeless people. It should look pretty good when it is done. It is a brick building with lots of white trimming and lattice work like a lot of early apartment buildings in Calgary had.

Peace be with you. All of us certainly could use some..... 73 and hazy in Carolina, expected to get to around 100 later. It made it to 98 here yesterday until a heavy thunderstorm came through and the temp dropped to 76. We had a series of storms last night with some much needed rain. Noisy but welcome.

Good Monday morning everyone, and Happy August 1st. Starting out this morning with fair skies and a temp of 75 degrees, going up to about 95 today. And no rain in sight. Believe this is our 16th day of 90 degrees or higher temp wise.

Which reminds me of a former CPR employee who had worked at Ogden shops. He was the oldest licensed driver in Alberta at either 100 or 101. At that age he had to take his license test yearly. He apparently did quite well until he became ill and died fairly suddenly, in just over a year after he last qualified for a license.
This story used to make the news every year at about the time my father retired(1985). Dad would get together with other oldtimers and they all thought it was interesting and amusing that this fellow had been retired for so long that there was nobody around who remembered working with him! You pensioned off in those days at 65, so it was around 35 years since he had worked. He had been a machinist and had never worked on diesels.

To help Rj celebrate his birthday, I've been grilling most over the past couple of hours: Steaks, hot dogs, brats, chicken, pork chops, corn on the cob; we also have all the regular side dishes.
And for dessert, there is plenty of ice cream: vanilla, chocolate, neopolitan, peach, strawberry, cookies and cream.
....Just home from Church....90 plus degrees with hot sunshine and humidity. Now....headed to Red Lobster. Will meet friends there and some food.

Mook: The truck that broke had 850,000 on the meter, this one has 750,000. This one is not much better, is lacking in the power department. Luckily, it is flat ground all the way to Buffalo from Wisconsin....
Had an interesting load the other day, apparently, Menard's (a home improvement chain here in the Midwest) just bought the old conveyor system from a Kohl's distribution center, and we got the nod to haul it from Virginia to a Menard's DC in Ohio.

All through July, there are many events, but the main event is the Days of 47 Parade which was on Monday this year. Ricki watched the parade in the comfort of our living room; I did other things.
We have had warm weather (into the nineties during the day and down into the sixties at night) with some rain, and expect the same to continue for a week at least.

Well T.S. Don was a bust here. He broke up; as soon as he hit landfall at Brownsville. On the plus side, we did get some light rain showers...so I guess we should be very grateful for that.

Well, the FD I mentioned before ended up with some 32 flooded basements at last word. Our neighbor had a half dozen. While I was at the fire station on some other business, I got a call from someone who said his mother's basement was flooded. I told him to call dispatch direct so they could dispatch us and get all the usual paperwork lined up. Must be his mum didn't live in our district, as we were never alerted.
Reports indicate that the heavily flooded areas got upwards of 2-3" of rain over a two hour period. Despite our ground being very dry, that's still more than it can soak up and/or drainage systems can easily handle.
Looks like a sunny and warm day today. So I'll have my bearclaw and get going on some outside projects.
