Better yet, I remember when Esso Extra was about 30 cents a gallon.
Hi everyone. I hadn't planned to post today but when I saw Murray's post I just had to jump in.
It reminded me that back in high school there was a place called Gales Service here, that had gas at 33.9 cents per gallon. Now this was an interesting place. It had contracts with a major taxi fleet in town as well as a number of commercial fleets and individual gravel truck owners. This was before commercial trucks switched to diesel en masse.
Mr. Gale did so much business he went to the refinery once a day with his OWN semi trailer tanker truck. The trailer was a '30's vintage unit, and he pulled it with a 1960 or so Dodge tractor. That trailer was about the size of those big plastic looking water tanks you see at construction sites mounted on 5 ton trucks now. Needless to say he was the biggest fuel dealer in Alberta for a number of years. During the first Arab Oil Embargo his station was in pictures in Canadian, and maybe US papers as well, for having the cheapest gas in North America for a few days before his price started going up as well.
It REALLY was a Full Service service station. If you phoned a certain number ahead of time, when you drove up to the station a young lady would run out of the office and jump into your car as you drove off! One of my friends from the neighbourhood worked there for several years, but he was under strict instructions not to discuss that aspect of the operation! He was paid exactly a $1 per hour more than any other gas jockey in the city, and in those days that was saying something. The building and lot was demolished two winters ago.
Not exactly RR related, but Murray and Quentin's memories got me thinking.
I haven't checked my usual sources of information today, so I have nothing new to report. A Supreme pizza sounds good tonight. Everyone have a good evening.

Breakfast is the warmer bar.Juice and coffee are ready to go too.Matt put some peeps on the tables today.Time to get get ready.Everyone have a great day.
Good Easter Sunday morning everyone! Yes, Joe, He is here, we just aren't supposed to mention him here.
Joe, thanks for taking care of breakfast this morning, and please tell Matt "Thank you" for the peeps at the tables. I know Walt, especially, will appreciate them. He really likes the peeps.
Easter Sunday Dinner will be warmed up and placed on the serving station somewhere between 1 and 2 p.m., if anyone is around.
At 8:26, we are getting moderately heavy rain, and I did hear a couple rumbles of thunder a couple of minutes ago.
Everyone have a Happy Easter, don't eat too much candy, and take care.
......He Has Risen. That is the message today for us Christians.
Here, it is overcast, and light rain. Not cold. Don't know how much we have from overnight, but didn't hear any nasty stuff. And we observe the Jet stream is still located virtually where it's been for several days now, which is determining the route of these streaks of very bad weather.
They seem to be passing from southwest to points east, but still managing to stay south of central Indiana. Noted video from the St. Louis air port terminal of the violence of wind tearing some of the structure apart, and the massive force blowing debris thru the concourse.
Note they say up to 2 months to repair the one Terminal back to normal use. Note all the windows blown out on one side of a massive window wall, is now boarded closed with plywood. Frame work seems intact, but all the glass was blown to destruction.
Makes me wonder why some of these designs are put forth in structures that are located in tornado prone areas.....The cost of replacing that double glass window wall....who knows....Many tens of thousands of dollars at least.
And the sub divisions that they have showed us with almost total devastation.....Terrible.
So our prayers are with those with terrible losses.
Looks like this streak of weather that is stretched for hundreds of miles has several days to run yet....Especially reforming each day in the late afternoon, etc...
Happy Easter Everyone!!!!!
Expected to be windy and hot here in Alamo City with a high of 93.
Home
checking into the "road butt" recovery ward after my 2:30 AM arrival.
Sir C - so glad you made it. You drove til you made it, didn't you. Then you wonder why I worry!
Well it will be a Happy Easter for Boss Hen & Da Boyz from their favorite Egg....

Our Easter is totally overcast for weather today....Not cold. Light rain.
Good Service at church this morning.
And....very good lunch with family / friends at Texas Road House.
Their 8 oz. Sirloin is just about perfect. Med. Rare....Um Good.
Back home to stay inside and mess around on here and not pay too much attention to the gloom outside. But no storm or serious weather, so we're thankful for that. We're really not too far from where that nasty stuff is going thru on a daily basis. Southern tip of Indiana.
And now for the Sunday Evening Laugh:

Mookie Sir C - so glad you made it. You drove til you made it, didn't you. Then you wonder why I worry! Well it will be a Happy Easter for Boss Hen & Da Boyz from their favorite Egg....
Da Boyz demanded (and got) a walk when I came-to this morning. Boss Hen had to quit hanging from the chandalier for a while; she can resume the party when I go back to St. Louis on Tuesday.
PS - What went wrong at Lexington NE that closed the town?
Lexington? Is that in Nebraska?
I checked the news sources and found nothing. Maybe something will show up by Thursday or Friday, which is just about how news moves in this state.
Anyway, i figure they knew there was a low-flying chicken in the area, so they went and hid....
Or maybe after 5 there is no Lexington?
Good morning. 64 and clear in Carolina before sunrise. According to the boffins, we should see 85 and sunny further along today.
I am feeling much better, but am still wobbly on my feet, but this phase should pass soon. Everyone take care and have a great day

Good Monday morning everyone. Just over an hour ago, we had another thunderstorm roll through Louisville. We have several more streets closed this morning, due to high water. A few of the streets closed are around River Road, along with other areas in the Metro area.
Mudchicken, it was very good to be able to talk with you and Boss Hen last night! Thoroughly enjoyed the conversation.
Tom, it is good to see you back in here. Glad to hear that you are slowly improving.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, and breakfast is on the serving station.
Everyone have a good day, hope your Easter was a good one. Talked with one of my great nephews last night, also. First time in a long time that I've talked with him. Hard to believe that he'll soon be turning 13! You all take care, and see you all later.
....And it continues....That is, overcast & wet. Just more of the same. Tomorrow the bad stuff has a chance to come a bit closer to us. Temps., still rather seasonally warm.
Today, the mobile repair fellow for John deere, is due this afternoon. And of course, we hope he will be successful in making our J D well again.
The yard, in the mean time, with all this rain...will be out of control...That will require several mowings, starting with a higher cut and another, shorter to get it anyways close to being correct.
Everything is soaked...Don't know how much delay this has and will be causing farmers, but certainly, it's an issue...for them.
Walt went out around 10 this morning , and checked the rain gauge: 4 inches in it since Friday morning. The Ohio River is 6 1/2 feet above flood stage, and will be getting more water in it. Although, at the present time, we actually have a little bit of sun light!! Current temp is 68 degrees. Believe we're to make it up to 80 degrees this afternoon.
Have a 'light' lunch ready for everyone:
Turkey sandwiches w/whatever fixings you want to add: onion, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and there are even some hard boiled eggs, if you want to slice one and put that on your sandwiches.
Everyone have a good afternoon, take care and see you all later.
Caught one of the weather channels a while ago, and the nasty weather path of these past 4 or 5 days will continue for at least 2 more days. The path will be moving {according to them}, slightly south as it passes underneath Indiana the next 2 days.
Rain..CW....Here, for the last 24, my rain gauge had 1.35". You folks are probably getting more rain than us, but we've had plenty too....Very wet and low lying areas are developing the lake like appearances.
It's still warm, but light overcast and light rain. When will the farmers get into the fields in this region....It will be delayed some, for sure.
Easter with the daughter's family - which included dinner out (at a restaurant with older adult men as waiters - a different experience these days) and time with the grandson. He's learning names and lots of other new words, so he's still a joy to be around.
He has apparently figured out that "Papa" will sit on the floor with him ("Pop" doesn't), so guess where I am when playing with him...
Nice start for the day, but the rain is creeping north and will be sticking around again for several days. I did get a little yard work done, however! Almost time to mow, though.
MC - I've done a few of those "a little too long on the road" trips. Yuk.
I've got a printing order for some raffle tickets to do, but they want some artwork on it, and the original they provided isn't all that good, so back to cleaning that up....

Good day everyone.
48°F and clear here today. There was talk earlier in the weekend that we might see 60° sometime this week, but I see now that the highest forecasted high is 54°. I was looking out my window yesterday morning as I was opening it up to let some fresh spring air in, and I noticed that at the edges of our parking lot there is still an inch or so of snow/ice mix against the curbs. That is a sign we are still a ways from a warm up yet.
I see in my sources of RR news that people like Dan might see CP trains in his area heading to Chicago. I guess they can't come down the regular route south from Winnipeg, so they are going over to Fort Frances, ON, and then down via Duluth, MN(?) to Chicago. Sorry about that. Using a CN line, formerly Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific, a Canadian Northern US subsidiary. I will have to PM him if he doesn't mention it first.
I hope everyone had a good Easter weekend.
Well, after a nice break from the rain this afternoon, it is on the way back in. Asked our paper man the other day if he was about to turn into a duck. He said not yet, but getting pretty close to it. At the time, it was and .
For supper tonight, you can have:
1. Turkey and dressing leftovers from Sunday Dinner or:
2. Hamburgers and fries w/salad
Everyone have a good evening, keep dry if you're in the "Rain belt" and take care.

grampaw pettibone I am feeling much better, but am still wobbly on my feet, but this phase should pass soon. Everyone take care and have a great day
I, too, have been absent from the cafe; Ricki and I left the night of 7 April, and got back home last Wednesday night. I posted, from time to time, in the Lounge since I was sometimes responding to a post that Carl had made concerning his and Pat's trip.
The primary reason for the trip was another college reunion, at which I saw a few of my classmates as well as my Physics and History professors, the current Physics professor, and an assistant to the college president (who started working at the college, taking care of the Women's dormitory, a year or two before I started attending).
Good Tuesday morning everyone. Johnny, glad to see you back!
This morning, we have 67 degrees with cloudy skies. More is expected to make its way back in here sometime later, coming from the WSW (again). And I saw a little one that will be coming from the NW. Our grass is getting so tall, it is not funny. Very breezy out also.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are on the serving station, as well as the regular breakfast menu.
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you later on this afternoon.
Good morning everybody. 68 and cloudy at present, with an inbound front. The boffins can't seem to make up their minds about thunder....
Johnny, Ricki's little jingle remnds me of one that floated around when I was in high school. BRUSH YOUR TEETH WITH SANI-FLUSH, AND YOU WON'T HAVE NO TEETH TO BRUSH.
All for now. Everyone take care
Afternoon all. Produce went well this morning. We had between 65 and 68 people. On the truck today: sliced purple onions, green beans, cabbage, lettuce and oranges. On the Bread/Pastry truck, bread and doughnuts, with about 4 cakes. Needless to say, the pastries went before the bread did (and they pick up their bread before they get their pastries.
In the middle of doing laundry. Thought I'd take a quick break, before the rinse starts, to drop in here with our menu for the rest of the day: Tuesday Pizza Fest:
1. Burritos (beef, beef & bean and enchilada style)
2. Tacos (soft and hard shells)
3. Enchiladas
4. Quesadillas
5. Fajitas
6. Gazpacho w/shrimp
7. Black bean & rice tostadas
Desserts:
1. Chocolate cake w/white icing
2. Yellow cake w/chocolate icing
3. Peach cobbler
We had a little bit of rain this morning, while we were doing Produce. Not a whole lot, kind of steady sprinkles (not quite a mist, but enough to get you slightly wet). Pretty breezy out right now, and looks like we may get rain after a bit.
Everyone have a nice afternoon, take care and see you all later. Back to the laundry room.
afternoon
well got most of the swamp mowed.wind is blowing from the w/sw and more storms are on the way according to the guessers.Matt should be home from school soon.Cw thanks for supper.Going to get stuff around for tonight.
Deggesty Modelcar: Today, the mobile repair fellow for John deere, is due this afternoon. And of course, we hope he will be successful in making our J D well again. Quentin, I trust that the repair fellow will stand behind his work. I understand that John Deere refused to stand behind one of his products--does he still make such?
Modelcar: Today, the mobile repair fellow for John deere, is due this afternoon. And of course, we hope he will be successful in making our J D well again.
Yea, Johnny.....I imagine the old saying of not standing behind his product, was associated with his manure spreader.....One sees very little action of such product anymore....Don't know when I last saw on of those in action.
So far, potential good news on my tractor....Service man showed as scheduled yesterday, and he agreed with my observation of very likely the problem to be a broken or worn {in some way}, drive pully assy. on top of the transaxle....Can't see it, just stretch and reach up to feel it. So if that is correct, we'll luck out pretty good. Ser. man has training class to attend in Ohio today, and he already ordered the part, and it should be available today, but he will get back to us on Thur. or Fri.
Had a local fellow {in mowing business}, mow our yard today, so it didn't get out of control...So we're upbeat on getting it running by the end of the week.
ModelcarDon't know when I last saw on of those in action.
Come on up my way! We don't see many of the old poo flingers around here, although they are used. What we see more of is liquid manure sprayers. Stinky!
How many head of cattle a farm can keep (speaking chiefly of dairy farms) is determined in large part by how many acres are available for spreading manure...
