Thought I'd start up the 2nd quarter.....
Well, I now own a home. Moving commenced about 2 hours after signing papers, and we got two pickup loads delivered today. Tomorrow, will be dismantling and moving the layout, and trying to get my bedroom cleaned out before I go back out Tuesday. Ah, the joys of moving.....
Other than that, not much else new, just recovering from the road, so back in later....

Good Friday morning and Happy April's Fool Day to one and all. We have 35 degrees this morning, supposed to get up to between 55 and 58 degrees by 4 p.m. EDT. But that's also when the rain is supposed to arrive here. The guessers also say we might possibly hear some rumbles of thunder this evening.

Walt: The house dates from 1951, when builders still used boards for the floor, BX for wiring, and before the use of copper in plumbing. There will be upgrades as time and money permits, thinking the plumbing will be first up, nothing is really wrong with anything, just that the gas water heater is on the opposite side of the house from everything that uses water (I can tell where the water heater used to be). It will keep me busy for a while....
Layout was dismantled and moved today, but rain put a damper on moving anything else, so will have to wait for tomorrow. Apartment is already beginning to look a little bare....
Fish fry will work tonight, a good beer-battered cod sounds really good....

Good Saturday morning everyone. Decided to sleep in a little bit this morning. Currently 44 degrees w/partly cloudy skies, and going for a high of about 61, 62 degrees. It looks like it is going to be a very beautiful day.
Coffee, juices, milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, cider, and hot water for hot tea are all fresh and ready to go. Our regular Saturday morning brunch is on the serving station.
Looking out the front door, I see a robin sitting on the chain link fence in the front yard. Oops: it just flew away. Must have know I was watching him.

Unbelievably, we are have our apparently regularly scheduled weekend blizzard again today. When I got the text weather warning yesterday morning I thought it was an April Fool's Joke. I hadn't been on the forum the last couple of days because the weather had been so nice. I was out catching up on things to be done.
Wednesday was so nice it was still in the high forties at sundown, and on Thursday night I was walking home from friends about 11:00 PM and it was in the high thirties. That temperature always feels nicer in the spring than it does in the fall. Then it started snowing last evening and it is really giving her now. 29°F, 12 mph wind, and a windchill of 21°.
So far it is too soon to hear of snow related trouble on the road or the rails.
Starting this afternoon and running until Prime Time next Sunday evening the World Men's Curling Championship is being played in Regina, SK. This means I will be watching sports on TV at sensible times. However, part of me really wants to find a low airfare and go there toward the end of next week to see some games in person. It would only be an hour flight, but I'm afraid my inner accountant will try and tell me it is not in the budget. I will have to decide sometime on Monday.
Meanwhile I will just have to stay inside out of the snow.

April 2nd, and still no mowing.....Getting behind in our "normal" activities outside. We have cloudy and partly sunny and into the 40's now, but I need a bit warmer to go and hit the first mowing. Maybe by this afternoon...?? If it doesn't rain by then.
And just now the sun came streaming in my eastern window here by the computer, from behind the moving clouds....Like to see it stay out more, to help to warm us up outside. It has power now...

Boards are boards, plumbing was upgraded to copper before we bought the place, electric is better than it was.......it takes awhile, but just hang in there.
Well, it may have been a slow day here in the Cafe/Diner, but I've been busy here at home. Did laundry, mended some of the laundry items that needed it. Walt went to the library this afternoon, and battled the wind both ways. Even with the wind, it is fairly warm outside. I even had to turn the little fan in the living room up to medium speed, to better move the air around.

Well, no Curling trips for me. I cracked open the Daytimer and there it was, a doctors appointment next Thursday. And that appointment has already been rescheduled once, by him. So I guess I'm stuck with watching it on the TV.

Spent a fair part of the day keeping an eye on a benefit for one of the managers of our local convenience store. She's quite ill. Since Zumba is pretty popular hereabouts these days, they held a Zumba session, along with a bunch of raffles. I'm told the profit was pretty good.
I've also been working on a sign for the fire department. One of our members happened on a moveable letter sign (like you see just about everywhere) someone was getting rid of. New versions are ~$600. This one was free, but fixing it up is going to cost a bit of time and money.
All day fire class tomorrow - time to start thinking about bed.

Aerated the lawn yesterday, the dogs are still checking out the sod plugs. Hoping for green sometime soon. The prairies are burning bigtime, 1000+ acre range fire near Ft. Collins last night. Quentin rolls flat the grass, we turn sod into swiss cheese. (Quentin has topsoil, we have brick)

Good afternoon. Well, we got quite a bit of snow yesterday. I haven't heard the numbers, but it was the heavy moist spring type snow. It is sunny now and is it ever bright! It is almost two weeks past the equinox, so the sun is now higher in the sky, and reflecting off of this new layer of clean white snow. I know it is not the correct smiley, but do you ever need sunglasses today.

We are normally a semi-arid area, so when this heavy wet snow starts to melt it can cause problems if it melts too quickly. And if it is sitting on old snow that hasn't melted yet, it softens that up and you have even more melt water. I haven't heard anything yet but these mismatched types of snow can also cause avalanches west of us.

Good Monday morning everyone. 74 degrees at 5:51 a.m. Hopefully, I'll be home before the rain/storms roll in. My appointment for therapy is at 9:00, and my ride should be here about 8 a.m. Wind gusts today will range from 40 to 45 mph. We must be at our high for the day, because I heard the meteorologist say that when the frontal system comes through, and the rain/storms have started, our temp will be down to 64 degrees.

Mookie Bruce, when does your winter officially end? Our last frost date is 5/15, but we usually don't hang on that long. At least not in these latter years.
Good morning everyone. I will get to Mookie's question first. Historically we have had only one frost free month in Calgary, July. The latest frost we have ever had is in the last day or two of June, and the first frost can come during the final week of August. Farmers can get out on the land in May and harvest in September. Measurable amounts of snow though, are a different matter. A couple of years ago we set a record where now we have no snow free months anymore. There was a trace amount on the ground either July 1 or 2, I forget which.
My brother is three years younger than me, and my sister is eight younger than him, and we all started the school year at least once with snow on the ground, although the year's were separated by over a decade. Receiving a small amount of snow during the last week of school, which ends at the end of June, was not that uncommon. One final weather fact, Calgary has never hit a high of 100°F, although the town of Strathmore, 30 miles east of us, has. That is due to the slight drop in elevation away from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Enough history, today we are at 37°F, with a wind of 7, and a windchill 32°. Currently we are cloudy, which almost seems like a good thing compared to the brightness of yesterday. That was wild.
As to RR news. CP had a problem on their Lethbridge-Medicine Hat, AB line on Saturday. High water levels closed the line for almost 24 hours near the village of Bow Island. This is down in that part of the province I mentioned yesterday, that can sometimes have real problems with winter runoff. It had gotten warn enough before this last storm to start the melting, but the cooler temperature now has stopped that. Slow and steady are the watch words for melting down there.

Have friends / family stating to our Muncie today from Florida....They purchased a small home here several years ago to spend this extended season here....until roughly October, each year until they migrate back here. Have to wait to several conditions change....
Severe weather forecasts between there and here possible today....Hope they can stay away from most of that....They {neice & husband}, are really anxious to get back here......

While I was around Milwaukee, stopped at Walthers and bought some flatcars that were on sale, I'll have a pretty long intermodal train when I'm done.....

Good Tuesday morning everyone. Man, it took me 20 minutes to get on the computer this morning. But had no trouble getting in here to the forums. We currently have a temp of 44 degrees with cloudy skies this morning, here in Louisville. Supposed to make it up to about 54 degrees by 4, 5 p.m.
I went shopping yesterday afternoon, and, even with my raincoat on, got drenched! Managed to get most of what I was going for, except for the one thing Walt needed most: Walmart's grey primer spray paint. After I got home, called another Walmart location, and they were out of it also. I think that is a first for them with their primer spray paint.
Now, in a bit, I'll have to go start getting ready for my Tuesday Produce people.

....Didn't take long to open this site up this morning, but it's pretty usless at night. Sometimes one can get on in a "reasonable" time, but not consistently.
