And we have them too, before my dad quit farming in 2007, he had three s--t slingers:  Two shot it out the back, and the third was a side-slinger V-tank for the more liquid stuff that accumulated in the manure pit.  The neighbors always loved us when we cracked open the pit every spring and fall.....

Well, have been busy the last few days stripping wallpaper, priming, and painting my new bedroom, looks much better now.  Also bought a new smartphone, which I'm using as Wi-fi right now, the cable guy can't come out to hook us back up until the fifth of May.  We have plenty of DVDs to watch, though....

Another shower just came through, has been a wet month here as well.  Most fields up here are still mud, farmers still can't get anywhere near the fields.  I get the feeling there will be no spring here, we will jump straight to summer.

See everyone later....

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Getting light rain this morning.  Had some storms move through overnight.  Scanner wasn't quite as busy overnight, but did go off 3 or 4 times, then I turned the dang thing off.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast menu is now on the serving station.

I have two appointments this afternoon:  first one is back to the orthopedic surgeon, then when I'm through there, will go up two floors to do my therapy.  I might be home by 6 p.m.

Did hear on the morning news that some places in our area got 2 1/2 inches of rain overnight.  The authorities are still reminding people not to drive through standing water, as it may be deeper than it looks, and they don't want people hydroplaning in their vehicles.  One driver did that the other day in his vehicle.  And on another note, though still weather related, they also said that half the country is being inundated with all the rain storms, high winds and tornado watches/warnings.

I'll try to be back in around 10:30, 11:00 to post the menu for today.  Everyone take care, keep dry if you can, and have a good day.

Rather warm here this morning....We received .7" of rain in the last 24.

Still lucking out with this rash of bad weather passing by just south of us.  Believe the pattern is about to change.  We're even expecting sunshine this afternoon.

And my tractor mobile repair man is due any minute now, and hopefully, he'll revive my sick John  Deere....

New glasses lens today and one Dr. appoint. for Jean, and then we should be free to find lunch.

Not raining now, but everything is wet.  Got our lawn mowed yesterday {called a service}, and glad to get it done with sunshine.

Edit:  4:40 pm....New glasses lens....found lunch....and John Deere successfully repaired....My diagnoses was correct...{splines worn on Drive pulley to transaxle.  Jean in and out of Dr. appointment.....So, successful day.

Here is the menu for this afternoon and evening:

Soups:

1.  Cream of Broccoli

2.  Tomato

3.  Cream of Potato

All three soups will be served with BLTs or you can have PB&J sandwiches, or:

You can have steak fries or curly fries and a garden salad with your soup.

Walt and I were just out in the front yard, and he checked our rain gauge:  2 1/2 inches was in the gauge from last night to this morning.  That brings our total of rain received here at home to 6 1/2 inches, at least.  I think the gauge has been emptied once or twice.

It's not always a good idea to drive through running water, either. At one point on our trip, we were traveling some back roads, and I saw that a pickup on the road ahead of me drove through a stream that crossed the road. Not knowing the depth of the stream nor how deep the rental car could go, I turned around and found another way to get to where I wanted us to be. Fifty-one years ago, I did drive down a stream--but I knew enough about it and my car.

Woke up this morning to 1/2" of snow on the ground. Da Boyz were out rolling in it.

We'll take the water any way we can get it. There are some really nervous wheat farmers around here.

Watching a line of thunderstorms (on radar) bearing down on us right now.  It generated a tornado watch in the western part of the state, as well as some severe thunderstorm warnings.  There's a marine warning along the lake (Ontario), but nothing for us yet.  Still gonna batten down the hatches...

Had a line of thunderstorms go through last night, but aside from some thunder, lightning, and a bit of rain, it didn't amount to much.  Still, a lot of our streams and rivers are running pretty good right now.

Heard of somewhere that got something like .6" of rain in just minutes yesterday.  I think they said the rate was equal to around 9" per hour, although it didn't last that long.

Nice and warm here right now, but it's been humid all day - the floor in the garage didn't dry out, even though the truck was out and the door was open all day.

Off to other hot projects.

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Well, we have dry skies this morning, and 26th St. is dry!  Hopefully, the rain is over for awhile (long while, at that).  Believe the latest I heard, is that the Ohio should crest sometime today, about 33 (?) ft. 10 ft. above flood stage.  A lot of streets are completely covered with water.

How awful things are southeast of us this morning, with the tornadoes that struck down in Alabama, etc. overnight.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people down there.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving/warmer station.

Well, I found out what is going on with my left knee yesterday:  tendonitis.

Slept with an ice pack on the left knee last night.  Knee is doing better this morning. Everyone have a good morning, take care and I'll see you all later.

To quote a friend of mine from last night:  "Oklahoma called, they would like their tornado season back..."

Looks like Tuscaloosa got hit hardest, wiping out a good part of the city, and Birmingham got hit hard too.  Wonder if Mother Nature is trying to tell us something, this is the worst weather I have seen in a long time, first with the snow, then the storms.  I guess we should prepare for the plague of locusts....

Chilly here this morning, will be lucky if we hit 45 today, normal is near 60, and a cold rain is forecast.  Only bright spot is they took out the rain for Sunday, and the 7-day looks much drier.  I think many people hope this is true.....

See everyone later...

....Sunshine here this morning....and cool too....Mid 40's earlier, and into the low 50's now.  Hopefully, this afternoon we'll dry out so I can do a mowing with my newly fixed tractor.

The deep south certainly got ravaged.  There's no other word to describe it.

We started out nice today, but then a cold front came through and dropped the temperature about 10 degrees.  It also brought wind.  I stopped on the way home from town and measured almost 30 mph - they're threatening gusts of as much as 60 mph.  Several fire departments have already gone out on wind-related calls in the area.

Got a hot project at the FD Banquet Hall.  No water and we've got an event coming up this weekend.  Off to work.

Shortening our Chinese menu today to just the following:

1.  Beef fried rice

2.  Chicken fried rice

3.  Pork fried rice

4.  Special fried rice (with beef, chicken, pork and shrimp)

There is plenty of each, just in case anyone can get in the doors tonight.

Our county 45 miles SW of Atlanta airport was savaged. I"m in Fl and wife reeported no damage to home at all not even limbs down. Every school in county and adjaecent county took some damage enough that no school until Mon to reassign pupils to other schools where needed. No deaths in our county. Wife spent time in tornado shelter last night.

First, let me offer condolences to anyone on the forum who may have been impacted by the tornado's yesterday. I see in a report on a Canadian news site that the latest death toll is 269, Very sad.

It is 36°F and overcast here. We have new snow on the ground, and up to 2" more is forecast in the 24 hr. period between tonight and tomorrow night.

My schedule has been such that I have only been able to spend about 10 min. total on this site since Monday afternoon. But I thought I should drop by after reading today's news.

Thank you CW, Chinese sounds like a great idea for supper.

Pardon me while I root around looking for fixings to make a sandwich while I wait for the start of the Royal Wedding. I guess the groom will leave for the church in about 20 minutes.

I also put on some coffee. A necessary requirement at this ridiculous hour.

This is the second time I have stayed up for a Royal Wedding although I planned for this one better by getting a few hour rest last evening.

By the time this is over, CW and Joe may have already checked in, and I will drop by to say hello.

Good Friday morning, and Bruce, thank you for fixing the coffee!!  It is always nice to come in the door and smell freshly brewed coffeeCoffee  What a nice way to start the morning.

We have a temp of about 53 degrees or so, with fair skies this morning.  Supposed to make it up to 69 degrees this afternoon.

Along with the coffee that Bruce fixed, our other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including fresh juices.

On the warmer/serving station this morning:  bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits & gravy (2 kinds, 1 with bits of sausage in it, and 1 just plain milk gravy), along with a nice selection of doughnuts, danish and muffins.

You all have a very good morning, and I'll see you all sometime this afternoon, after I get home from therapy.

I'm glad you enjoyed the coffee.

Well, the wedding is over, and the Bride and Groom, the Queen, and Prince Charles have all arrived at Buckingham Palace, so that is all for me. I am going to lie down for a while now and then I have to go out and pay some bills this afternoon.

It must be my farming roots, but I sure enjoy watching those Brit's handle those carriages and all those horses.

Everyone have a good day.

.....Seeing some of all the massive gathering of Brits this morning at the royal wedding on TV and thinking how "in control" everything seemed to be.....Masses of people moving together towards Buckingham Palace thru the streets following the officials....So orderly...!  Made me feel a bit sad, that under the same conditions our country can't seem to come near in behaving in such a  respectful manner.

So much brash, wild extremism we're being subjected to in our country, just thinking about it, makes one sad.  The way the extreme fringes are acting here.....Surely we can do better.....We certainly did at some time in the past.

But if the behavior in this country continues as is now, we won't remember how to act as decent people should.

I slept thru the big wedding.  But I cried thru mine, so this was much better.

I am terrible with weddings.  I can't watch Say Yes to the Dress w/o crying at parts of it.  Bambi is on my list of what not to watch.

I'm a hopeless romantic.

We are blowing in the wind, but this is normal.  No storms, no problems.

Q - I have noticed a tiny change.  When I was working at our university and rode the bus, I had to either fight my way in front of the young men who also rode or be trampled in trying to get on the bus.  I challenged a couple of them and just bulled my way in front of them - the bus was pretty empty and no reason not to act like a gentleman instead of an ill-mannered boor.  I always turned around in front of them and said thank you and smiled.  Probably irked them to death!

Now I have had both young men and young women open doors for me at businesses.  Maybe there is still hope out there.

Parents know better.  They just get lazy and pass it on to children.

Not a bad day to open the windows in the house....

Got quite a bit done around the house today, got a bunch of stuff cleaned up and organized, hung some pictures, changed the two hallway light fixtures (which must have been original to the 1951-built house, boxes are of a design I have never seen before), swapped some outlets and switches for new ones (Never knew of a Sears brand light switch before), and took shots of the outside of the house.  Pictures should be going up on Facebook shortly.....

Plan for tomorrow is to install a ceiling fan in my bedroom, which will involve installing a new electric box and supports for it.  Dad stopped by today, and we discussed what needed to be done, already checked the attic, should not be too hard to install (no attic floor to worry about).

See everyone later....

Well, just now getting back in here, at 8:41 p.m.   Walt and I have both had a pretty busy day.  He went out to a hobby shop out in the east end.  Believe he got home about 2 p.m.  I went first to the grocery store this morning, then came home to get ready to go to therapy.  Went to therapy, and finally got home about 3:30.  Was pretty tired and worn out, so lied down for a nap.  Then fixed supper.

After Sarah got home from work, she cut the grass.  I haven't looked out back, but the front yard looks really nice!!

Our regular Friday Fish Menu is on the warmer/serving station, with all the regular list of fish, sides and desserts.

I have to admit I did see a little bit of the festivities across the ocean this morning, but not for long:  I wanted to find some local news, and finally found one local station that had local news this morning!

I didn't have any trouble getting in the main doors here this evening.  Maybe things are looking up around here!  Everyone have a very good evening, take care  and I'll see you all tomorrow.

Regarding Sears brand light switches

Our Irricana, AB station had two generations of electrical upgrades. The building was built without electricity, and with lathe and plaster walls in 1910. Then sometime in the 1920's electricity was installed. However they didn't want to disturb the walls, so all of the wiring was done inside metal pipes that were clamped to the outside of the walls, and across the ceiling. And the switch boxes and fixtures stuck out from the walls and ceiling.

Then after we moved there, the B&B gang came and did a major renovation in 1958. This time they used Gyprock walls, and the wiring was behind the walls. Both times the electricians used black flip switches, but here is where it got interesting. The second group of switches moved up and down silently like any modern switch. But during the 1958 renovation they left the plaster walls and the original wiring in the office, heated freight room, and the freight shed. Those black switches were hard to move and they gave out a snap you could hear from one end of the building to the other. There was never any doubt if someone turned a light on or off in that part of the house!

Bruce, your description of the Irricana station reminds me of the house my mother's father had built for his four maiden sisters in 1898. They had been living at the old home place, out in the country, and it was decided that they should live in a town. So, he (a missionary to Japan), had the house built, complete with all the then small-town conveniences (outdoor facilities, well on the back porch, lamplight). I am not certain of when the changes were made; it may have been in 1932 when he was retired at age 70; but city water and electricity were laid on.

The water system was complete with a coal-burning stove with water jacket and a tank in the kitchen (and the system had to be turned off and drained if the temperature was expected to drop below freezing). The wiring was knob-and-tube in the ceiling; I expect that the wires were dropped down to the wall switches, since I saw no evidence that the plaster had been worked on, and the switches were push-button. There was no wall outlet anywhere in the house, and if you need to plug anything in, you plugged it into the socket at the end of the dropcord in the center of a room. When it came time to replace a wall switch, I had to use a tumbler switch, which meant replacing the switchplate. Before my mother, my youngest brother and I moved in with my grandmother after my grandfather's death, an electric water heater was installed.
