called computer people.someones hotmail left a virus in the system. They are working on it.

Joe

Joe - was it a virus on one of us or just someone on hotmail?  They have been having trouble for at least 2 weeks now.

I've had a couple of instances with my Hotmail-based account lately where spam is sent out using addresses from my received mail list,  not my address book.   Really strange.  I know it's my received mail because I'm getting "cannot deliver" replies from "do-not-reply" notification accounts from sites where I bought something on-line.

So, if any of the folks I've corresponded with in the past got some spam from me, please know that I haven't taken up a sideline selling questionable products.

Still have light snow coming down.  Should stop sometime this evening.  Have a couple inches of it now.

Project for this afternoon:  Install newly purchased speaker system on this computer, including a sub woofer....Now, we can take advantage of the net digital music as we do computerese.  Listening to it now...

Maybe 2 1/2" on ground of the new stuff...

Soup's ready, everyone.  You have your choice of:

1.  Vegetable beef

2.  Tomato

3.  Cream of Broccoli

All three served w/your choice of grilled cheese, tuna, or PB&J.

I'll guess that we have about 2 1/2 inches of snow (at least that was the report at 6:15 EST, out at the National Weather Service.  Haven't stuck my head outside today, except to get the paper this morning.  Left knee acting up, so have been staying off it today.

You all have a good evening, take care and see you all tomorrow.

Good Friday morning everyone.  Curently 13 degrees here in Louisville, with a wind chill of between 0 and -5.  Schools are closed.  Furnace is running.  I hate the thought of what the next gas & electric bill will be!

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. including hot chocolate this a.m.  On the serving station are some homemade doughnuts, along with the regular breakfast menu items.

Guess Walt, Sarah and I will probably try to get out and sweep, shovel and put down snow melt later on.

Everyone have a good morning, bundle up to go outside, and please, please take care.

Ms Mook - you can delete those messages - I don't get a cut from the sales...

Looks like the temperature is continuing to drop - should be an interesting day, especially if the wind comes up.

The weekend is supposed to be cold, too, but I've got inside projects to work on.  We were supposed to have a work session on the railroad, but we can't get everything that needs work inside, so we're waiting for a warmer weekend.

Time to check the mail and get to work on the hot project of the day.

Well our schedule was interupted this morning.  At 6:30 this morning, our power went off....Actually a large area in the Muncie system.  And of course, we also had the coldest morning of the season....2 degrees.

But fortunately, at a bit after 8 the sun came up and shining brightly as it was frosty clear.  And...our family room patio door faces south, so with the sun coming in brightly, that helped.  Electric Co. indicated power would be back on at about 10:30....True to their word, it was restored at 10 am.

So, finally got ready and headed to the chevrolet dealer to have some service on my truck....but this put it near noon, and we decided to reschedule for Monday.  3rd time we've tried to make this happen, hopefully, we'll finally get it accomplished on Monday.

We have a total elecric home too, so power outages, get our attention.

I'm guessing a large transformer may have failed, and perhaps a temp. one possibly had to be set in until problem corrected.  I thought the service was pretty good, having to do all this out in below "0" wind chill early this morning.

Fortunately, not real nasty wind and other Winter conditions....More or less an almost calm very cold January morning.

Had to wait for a west bound covered hopper train on the Frankfort NS line as I came beck from the dealer.  Bet he had to use extra effort to move all those covered hoppers with the near zero temp this morning.  But...he was moving right along.

Still, bright sunshine shining....thru mostly clear blue skies...

Well, I took the first turn outside this morning, with the snow shovel.  I think it was mostly ICE on the front steps and sidewalk.  Made it 2/3 of the way to the front gate, with the shoveling and putting down ice melt.  Someone else can take the next turn, as my lower back is killing me.

Here's the menu for the rest of the day:  along with our regular Friday Fish Fry, we also have pots of soup and chili.  Pots of chili are mild, medium and three alarm.

Our paper finally showed up.  I had look all the way down the front sidewalk, whenever I looked out for the paper this morning, to no avail.  But when I went out to start shoveling, found it on the sidewalk, right next to the bottom porch step.  Hadn't been there any other time I'd checked.

I think our current temp is in the mid teens.  High today is supposed to make it 19 degrees above zero, with wind chills in the single to minus single digits.

Everyone keep warm and take care.  See you all later.

CW - The wake for a longtime local resident was held at our social hall today.  The walk at the front door was a mess so I spent some time clearing it off.  Fortunately the sun peeked out enough that despite the mid-teens temperature, any remaining snow and ice melted off before anyone arrived.

Got the materials I need for a printing job, so off to the shop I go.

So, if any of the folks I've corresponded with in the past got some spam from me, please know that I haven't taken up a sideline selling questionable products.

Greetings from Calgary. I have been meaning to join your happy little group for a while now, but this mention of spam gave me a good opportunity.

Two days ago, on another thread, Dan invited me to look at his collection of CP loco photos on Flikr. I didn't get a chance until yesterday morning. I saw one photo I particularly liked and I posted a comment under it. Immediately after that another screen popped up welcoming me to Flikr. Then at 7:03 AM I received an email confirming that I had joined Flikr. At 12:50 PM I received spam from a Photographic School inviting me to enroll! That only took 5 hrs. and 47 mins. Pretty amazing considering that in the almost 16 years I have had a home based e-mail address, I had never once before received such an invitation. These spam operators are scary!

As to the weather here, we are coming off of a particularly difficult week. We are about 38° F with partly cloudy skies right now, but last Saturday night we hit about -15° F with continuous waves of snow. CPR service has almost been brought to a dead stop between here and Kamloops, BC. They have been getting record amounts of snowfall at points in between, with Golden, BC receiving 28" of snow over a 4 day period with 40" on the ground. CP couldn't get crews in to clean off the track.

A number of years ago CP made the decision to use rubber tired and tracked machinery to do snow and avalanche cleanup. It made sense to the bean counters because you could attack problems from many intermediate locations instead of just from each end. But the plan sort of blew up in their faces when all of the highways they need for access have been closed as well. Seems to this accountant who grew up around the railroad, that keeping some track mounted heavy duty clean up equipment around would be a good idea, since trying to keep a 10 or 12' wide ROW clear should be easier than keeping a however many feet wide road would be. They still have Russel Plows and Jordan Spreaders, but some sort of railcar mounted excavator seems like something they should have several of. If there is no more snow they are still looking at a week to ten days to get service back to normal.

And I did understand Miniwyo's description of his job, because my job in the second half of the Seventies was accounting for the volumes of natural gas in pipelines like the one he is talking about.Smile

I hope to keep visiting you folks often.

Bruce

BTW - It's fitting that I replaced the jack o'lanterns with my current avatar - I was serving as the "patchmaster" for our pumpkin trains at the time.  That's my shelter in the background - rumored to be fully equipped with all the amenities of home.  More like a heater and a chair, both of which came in quite handy.

I just got back from a few days in the hospital. Some of the work from my previous stay came unraveled and had to be replaced. Sore and grumpy again for a while, but lemme be the first to say there is no place like home, with my own bed, desk and refrigerator. The girls have taken every opportunity to ignore me....

Good Saturday morning everyone.  A very, very cold morning here in Louisville, with a temp of 6 degrees above zero!  When I heard the news at 6 a.m., our temp was 8 degrees.  High today will only be 27.  Normal high for this date is 41, 42 degrees.

Tom, I'm sorry to hear that you've been back in the hospital.  I hope everything will go well for you and you can stay home and get better.  Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Saturday brunch is on the serving station.

Everyone take care, keep warm, safe, and have a good day.

Good Morning.

34°F right now with a few clouds, going up to a whopping 37°F with clear skies later today.

No new news on the other forums and websites I normally peruse every morning about the snow and avalanche situation to the west of us. I guess that means some things have at least started moving again.

Another good day of watching Curling on the TV for me today. A skins game. Four teams play two sudden death games today, and the winners play for $100,000 tomorrow. Nice work if you can get it!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Overcast {again}....but no new snow.  Not quite as cold this morning, but plenty cold:  7 above 0...Our little pup gets out in this stuff {a few inches of snow, in the morning, and we have to keep a close eye on her because if she {her feet}, get too cold, she just might stop, and we might have to run and get her.  She's a wee miniture Dachshund.

Possible snow flurries at times this weekend, but no big accumulation predicted.

Just in from a day out - It has been 6 days since we ventured out.  Just got the snow down to a liveable amount and now they are sending 5-8 more tonite and tomorrow.  Blah!  Supposed to be a milder winter.  Obviously mild doesn't mean less snow.

Tom - glad you are back.  The girls should be running errands for you since they should be so happy to have you back home.

Bruce - we don't get to watch too much curling, but have always found it enjoyable when we do see it.  Right now we are up to our necks in end of football and basketball.  Used to watch a lot of hockey, but even that isn't on that much any more.

Joe - cookie, again?  Dinner

Watched a few trains - they are really doing a lot of mow on a switch and some tracks.  This is the 2nd week they have been working on that area.  Either they are installing another lead or the derail really tore up the tracks.  Would love to walk down there and discuss it with them, but afraid they wouldn't be very happy to talk to me.  Need to get BNSF to install an info booth at our watch site.

Gotta go look up Calgary AB on my map.  I am pretty sure this is where the Stampede is held, but need to pinpoint it a little better than just up there somewhere.

Mookie

Gotta go look up Calgary AB on my map.  I am pretty sure this is where the Stampede is held, but need to pinpoint it a little better than just up there somewhere.

Calgary, home of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, is at the base of the Eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. It has been a Railway town from the get go, as this was where engines have been serviced and repaired before going west over the mountains. Only after WWII did the Oil & Gas Industry replace the CPR as the city's biggest employer.

One Curling game down, and one more this evening. First game was a last end upset, but I am not terribly unhappy.

Thank you for your interest Mookie.

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  Not quite as cold here in Louisville, this morning:  temps in the mid 20s; seems to be hanging right around 25 degrees.

Bruce, you're quite welcome on the pizza, and I hope you come in to join us here, whenever you can. And that goes for anyone else who may be lurking around!

Coffee, juices, and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  cold pizza for anyone who wants that for breakfast; bacon, eggs, biscuits & gravy, grits, oatmeal, toast, pancakes, and some fresh fruits.  There's even some bagels and bear claws, too.

Everyone have a good morning, take care going to Church, work, or wherever you are going this morning.

....The sun is up and shining on our cold landscape....10 degrees right now.  Possible snow flurries sometime today, is forecast, but right now, it certainly doesn't look like it anytime soon.

Soon...must get ready for our church activity and then somewhere for lunch...{Sunday meal} after that.  Snow on the ground, and will be until we see some warmer temps.

But, we're lucky we've not seen any big Winter weather storms give us much of a direct hit.  Others have had much worse...Even further south of us.  Some have come close to us, and hit us on the edge of it, but not head on....

Hope everyone on here is keeping warm and to have a good day.
