I think you may be right, Quentin:  Walt has taken his bike out, for a trip to the library for more reading material for himself!  Thinking this is his first trip out on it for the season.

Here is our Mexican Fiesta menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Tacos (soft and hard shells)

2.  Burritos (beef, beef & bean, beef enchilada style)

3.  Spanish rice

4.  Mesquite-grilled steak, chicken and tilapia

5.  Chimichanga dinner

6.  Smoked cheddar bacon burger

Plus, if you want an appetizer, we have tortilla chips and dips:  salsa, picante sauce or con quesa, in mild, medium and hot.  (My personal favorite is medium, and sometimes I blend medium salsa w/the quesa.)

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and hopefully, I'll see you all back in later this afternoon and evening.

Quentin, hope all is well around your neck of the woods!  Just saw on the news where they had to evacuate an animal shelter there (Muncie, In.) due to very high water.

Thus far here, the Ohio is staying (right now) under Flood Stage.

--Yes Brian H., stop playing Train Station so the rest of US can catch up!!--Cool

Sorry Walt to take so long to comment.  You are correct, over a hundred dogs and other animals were carried out of their flooded "ARF" location.  Today, in the paper it indicated volunteers responded with force, and donations of food and other needed equipment, cages, and all the other needed things are pouring in from donations.....Lots of food too.  All the're supplies were lost. So seems the help has really come forth.

We did get a bunch of rain....reported form 3 to 6" overnight two nights ago.  Plus snow runoff....

We're high and dry here, but back on the golf course fairway behind us it had formed a lake as it does under extreme conditions.   We saw water across streets and county roads, and some State routes in this area were we've never seen it before.....And we've been in this area almost 50 years.

White River is receeding now.  Lots of homes in the Muncie area, did get water in them.

Now, finally into the month of March.....Have to think, I'll very likely be mowing yard before we turn this month's calendar over to the next month.  Believe we're on the glide path to Spring now.

Whistling  Ed; I know of what you speak about. Stirring gears in those various  " trannys" will do a bad number on  your cuff  when you miss a gear  on a split shift ( road ranger reach)  ouch. Had my shoulder fix  2yrs. past . No pain , except when a sudden move is made. No more 4x4 tranny shifts .  those were the good old days ??  Ain't life grand ?

Ed - knock wood - Driver & I have so far been very lucky to have avoided the problems you & wife are having.  I know only one person that had rotator cuff surgery.  He was not thrilled with it, but afterward was so much better.

But even with just the allergies I am dealing with - big time, but no big deal - I still have to give myself a pity party for awhile.  Gets me out of the kitchen, too!

Bruce - my Dad was fireman/engineer on railroad for 42 years until early 1980's.  You are right - young people now days wouldn't work under any of those conditions during that time.  But then, modern day - they shouldn't have to do so.  Back then, they were just thrilled that they didn't have to shovel coal any more.  My grandfather worked under even worse conditions.  But he was in it until he turned 70 and had to retire.  He was an engineer on passenger and felt like he had really "arrived"

Good Morning. I had no trouble getting on the site this morning, but Monday night I couldn't get on at all. If you remember, I had mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was having trouble but since then things had been working pretty well.

So, the news anchor on the breakfast show asks "are we continuing with this horrible weather?" And the weatherman says "actually that is a pretty good word for it." Right now it is -9°F with a S 12mph wind giving us a windchill of -29°F.

This is the sort of weather that led to the development of the "Canadian Cab", later called the "Whisper Cab". When you were in a "Spartan Cab" SD40-2 for instance, heading into a wind like today, that flat panel below the windshield ahead of the engineer would transfer a terrific amount of cold into the cab. It worked the same as a hot grill, only in reverse. My Dad started saying a number of years before the CPR bought its' first SD40-2F's that if the railway doesn't do something about the working conditions in those old cabs, the railway is not only going to start losing the employees it has but won't be able to hire new ones. Young folks were no longer going to put up with 1950's and 60's working conditions.

Anyway, things seem to be working OK so far today, as I haven't read of any bad news out there yet.

I hope all your various maladies get better soon. Those lingering pains can get you down. Everyone stay warm and dry.

Bruce

I am 2nd on the list for the Body shop so to speak.  Wife has first shot woman issues Big time.  Then her back.  Then me heck I only lived with a screwed up shoulder for 5 years before I had it fixed the first time.  Right now it is only damaged 20% of what it was before the first surgery so no where near as bad.  No tendons damaged just tore the rotator cuff.  Just will take some of everything along with a big glass of OJ so I can down my Painkillers this morning.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Finally made in this door:  kept getting a message this morning that trains.com was taking too long to respond.  Still being a tad bit on the slooow side.

Coffee, juices, and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, and breakfast is on the serving station.

Current temp is back up to about 36 degrees, had dropped a couple of degrees.  Supposed to get up into the mid 50s today.  Should be a beautiful day.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and see you all later.

Ed, nice to see you in here!  Hope your shoulder is mended real soon.

Mookie, please don't smother yourself!  I need you around here, if only for other female company, around all these guys.

Supper tonight:  grilled pork chops, hamburgers & steak fries, vegetable medley blend, and got some nice oranges at Produce today.

That produce truck was early this morning:  8:39 a.m.  We had potatoes, onions, purple cabbage and iceburg lettuce.  The bread/pastry truck had some bread, 12 desserts, and lots of bagels and English muffins, and a few bags of the little round sandwich bread.

Brian, you have to stop playing Train Station so much, or divide your time between that and here! Smile, Wink & Grin  We've got too many people who have disappeared around here.  It has me about to decide to disappear from here.

Everyone have a good afternoon, what's left of it here on the east side of this country of ours, take care and see you all later.

Tree - first thing I do is turn off #2 mic.  Drives you nuts, otherwise.

Have you heard the airplanes take off?  #7 is the loudest.  Somewhere around the tower is an airport of some kind.  Haven't heard it for awhile, but it was getting pretty noisy there for awhile.

I will watch for the 2 owls.  #3 - she was in there spitting fire and he kept bringing in meeses.  She would have a fit so he would take off with dinner.  I think she was telling him that she hasn't laid the eggs yet, so he is a little premature on the feeding.

Ms Mook - there was a generator or something running in the background around the tower this AM, which was how I was able to discern which cams were located there.

Took me a while to figure out that Cam 2 has much delayed audio - as in by a minute or two.  I sometimes leave the site up while I'm working around the house so I can hear the crossing bells, at which time I'll check out the traffic (which included both a passenger and a freight meet this morning!).

Awfully frustrating to drop all to check out another train only to discover that the gates are up and the lights aren't flashing.  Finally figured that one out a few days ago.

I saw not one, but two owls at the nesting box (night shot) the other day.

It's a pleasant diversion.

I've had the phones ringing my ears for years.  I only really notice it if the surrounding world is quiet...

Ed - had a small tear in lig behind knee - thought I was going to be crippled for life (those suckers hurt - or I am a big sissy) - so can commiserate with your shoulder.  Mine healed on its own so no surgery.  Bodies are good until they don't work.

Nose working a little better for now.  Now if I could just answer the telephones ringing in mah ears....

Good Morning. Our cold snap continues apace. Currently it is -13°F, wind is SE at 8 mph, giving us a windchill of -29°F. The forecast for the next seven days show Thursday 's high is going to be a balmy +18°F, then going back down to the plus single digits.

No new news on the local RR front today.

Now Mookie that is not the way to talk.  Yes colds are horrible but I will trade your cold for my shoulder anyday of the week.  My little one started to fall after rocking his highchair so hard I had to grab him in midair.  Trouble was I landed on my Surgically repaired shoulder.  MRI shows I destroyed all the repairs that were done on it.  So back under the knife I go.

Wonder if Randy has come to yet.  He looked awfully tired...

Ms Mook - Couldn't sleep (2AM) so started poking around the Netherlands rail cam.  Found the "Froona Cam" (numbers 6 and 9).  Put N 51.52611 E 5.70418 into your favorite map program.  It's a rather tall communications tower near de Mortel.  You'll also see that funny shaped waterway to the right of the tower. Driver & I have been all over that surrounding area on different maps.  The tower cams are on #5,#6,& #9.  #7 is on the tower grounds, but set up fairly close to the canal - on the ground. It is startling to see "legs" walking by there! The stick is for the Kingfisher that will be there later in the spring/summer/fall.

That doesn't appear to be the same nestbox as #3, though.  This is a single in Helmond.  .

The canal shot (with the stick across it) also appears to be nearby, as determined by some background noise heard on several of the de Mortel tower shots. See above

Saw the birds in cam #3 several times.  One appeared to be digging in the corner nearest the opening on the far side of the box.  The other hid on the other end of the box when it was there.  Female in corner trying to make nursery.  Probably male cowering in corner since she really yells at him!

The # 8 cam is on a birdfeeder during daylight and on the owl box at nite.  Have heard the owl several times, seen it a few times and figure it will also have a nest fairly soon.  This cam is on (private, I think) property not too far from the tower and have seen (beside the birds) some cows, horses and today, some whitetail deer (2) on the grassy part that you sometimes see.

Peregrines are really flying around #6 and #9 - they will nest soon.

#1 and #2 had rail work done the other nite.  Raining pretty steady, so couldn't make out too much of what they were doing.

As you have time, check out the comm towers in the Netherlands.  There are a lot of them and they are all very tall and interesting shapes.

Might try the pillow again in a bit.

I am a snotnose right now and miserable.  Eyes itch, ears itch, nose runs, feet smell.  Pillow might work!  Maybe I can smother myself!  Blindfold

....Finally, we're into March.  On our way to Spring.  Here we've had a cool brisk morning, but the sun is out shining bright.  So, by afternoon, we'll be above freezing.

Some places probably had some frost on all the water in the ground from the flooding.  I've heard figures as high as 6" night before last {of rain}...I saw water places that have not seen before, and we built this house 40 years ago.

We're high and dry, and those low places are draining.

Yesterday was root canal and fight an ear infection day....Next step in root canal, in a few weeks will be a crown.   Heading to Dermatologist this morning to see how infection {at spot he removed}, is doing....Believe we're gaining on it.  I'll be glad to move on from this stuff.

No snow here anymore....Tulips...Daffadils and Cosmos coming up thru the ground.

Good Tuesday morning everyone.  Larry, thanks for posting the shots from the Netherlands.  Enjoyed looking at them.   33 degrees here this morning, supposed to get up to about 54 today.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is also ready and on the serving station.

Well, so far, 4 tornadoes have been confirmed in the Louisville area from yesterday morning.  Fortunately, I have not heard of any fatalaties associated with the storms yesterday morning.  A few minor injuries, though.  I don't think anyone close to our neighborhood had any damage.  I may hear something when I go over to Produce this morning, though.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and see you all this afternoon.

Whew! Am I ever glad there are no tornado's here. But it is snowing. At a fair rate, too. -9°F with a N 14 mph wind, giving us a windchill of -31°F We haven't had this much steady winter like weather here, since the end of November, in many years. Often in recent years we could have a full melt before the next snow, but there are many shady spots this year that still have all the snow they started with.

I don't see any RR related news caused by the weather today, but there have been a number of recreational types who have been killed by avalanches recently. Those avalanches at some point often end up on the tracks, so I think it will still be a matter of when not if.

Well, that is all I've got for now.

With the way the wind was blowing this morning, our rain gauge showed about an inch or less when he checked it a little earlier.  We're still getting a drizzle to light rain, and the current temp is 44 degrees.  I did hear on our noon news, that our temp got up to  71, 72 degrees, just after midnight.

For the rest of the day, I've fixed some beef stew w/baked cornbread and fixed fresh garden salad.  Figured that just might hit the spot.

Rain all morning, then some snow.  Now just cloudy but still above freezing.  Rain guage says .83", but no reports or warnings of flooding so far.

Two different train shows over the weekend.  Got lots of pins out!  Hopefully we'll get plenty of riders, too.  A lot of us are taking a very proactive stance on marketing this year, something that's been let slide, unfortunately.

So aside from a trip to town this morning and some work with some rookie firefighters tonight, today is a down day.

Whew!  What a morning!!  Been awake since before 4:30:  we were under a tornado warningThe warning is now over with, but we are under a tornado watch until 10:00 a.m.  Our schools are on a 2 hour delay, and some of the child care centers have no child transport this morning.  They had reports, over in an Indiana county, of a roof flying off a house, locally, flying trash cans, and overturned newspaper boxes.  I looked out the front door, and our garbage can is still upright, hasn't moved any, and our recycling bins remained stationary out at the curb, waiting for pickup. At one point, they showed the wind speed on screen:  62.3 mph.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, if you're in the bad/severe weather zone(s), take care, see you all later.
