Thawed?  I was at the fire station this morning working on a class for Wednesday night and the wind chill alarm (set for 0F) kept going off....  I lowered the threshold to -5F and it still kept going off...

Had to shovel the driveway this morning.

NASCAR drivers could save a fortune if they just drew straws and let the top 10 or so drivers race for 10-15 laps.  There are so many variables in running 500 miles, give or take, that stuff can happen like a favorite can end up wrecked and a relative unknown can win.  One blown tire can take out the top 10 positions in seconds.

Not that I care...

Happy birthday, Quentin!Happy B-Day May the day come back many more times, with joy each time!

It's good to know that you folks back east are getting thawed out and can go outside safely again. How are Jean's wrists?

We had a light snow in the valley yesterday morning and again last night; I understand that some of the ski resorts got up to three feet--I did not have to do anything to clean my sidewalk off, but let the latent heat take care of it.

The temperature here was about 30 this morning, but it was much warmer than it was last week when the air temperature was closer to forty--with what was called "breezes" blowing. If the winds were breezes, what would these people call hurricane force winds? There were some places close by with gusts of 80-100 mph recorded. The canyons on the east side (backside of the Rockies, also known as the "Wasatch Front") can have horribly strong winds at times.  Out here, in mid-valley, it is usually much more pleasant.

Joe, the schools here were closed Friday and today. When I was going to school ,we had Thanksgiving Day and the day after, and two weeks at Christmas off; no three-day weekends.

Quentin, I also hope the others in here enjoyed the breakfast fare this morning.

Here's the lunch menu Quentin requested (in bold type):

1.  Tomato soup w/grilled cheese sandwiches

2.  Sloppy Joes w/fries (regular or curly) and choice of cole slaw or garden salad

Desserts:

1.  Chocolate ice cream

2.  Chocolate cake

3.  Apple and Peace cobblers

Any flavor ice cream you want for the cobblers and cake.

Everyone enjoy, have a good afternoon, and I'll be in the kitchen, preparing Quentin's and our dinner/supper menu.

I probably mentioned here last year a couple of ice fishermen who walked out to their desired spot only to have it detach from shore and blow across a bay (with them on it).  They were rescued by fire department airboat.  At least they were dressed for it and didn't fall in.   Had to leave their gear on the ice, unfortunately.

An airboat certainly sounds like the proper equipment for water rescues especially where there is broken ice. Will mention it to our local fire chief.

Thank you, all you good forum folks for best birthday wishes.

First off...The nasty Winter others are commenting about, did slide up and over us....Just a bit damp here.  37 degrees now.

Jen...........Enjoy the chocolate cake....That is certainly good, and don't forget chocolate ice cream....My favorite.

CW, hope the diner customers enjoy the straight forward breakfast.

And Bruce, a thanks from way up north....Nascar yesterday:  It was a race {in my opinion}, that could not have been predicted...Too many elements were different....Especially the 2 cars running nose to tail....and I believe my thoughts of the wreck potential was actually realized.  Many, many top team cars were taken out or badly damaged that they were no longer competitive, or had to drop out completely.

The new track surface...{50,000 tons}, of new surface made racing possibilities different.....Actually we did have several rather nasty wrecks during the course of the race....Hundreds of thousands of dollars in race cars damaged / destroyed....but fortunately, doesn't seem like any major injuries to any dirver.

Personally, I believe they will have to tweak the thought of this push / pull racing...They got away with it on this track {as far as injuries are concerned}, which had lots of grip, but wonder how this kind of racing will behave on other "big" tracks with less grip....{not brand new pavement}.

The 20 year old winner, a new record.  Just had a birthday this weekend and earned 1.4 million dollars...!  That's awesome.  Only his second Sprint Cup race...!!  Oh yes....Hardly a scratch on his car.

And the first win for the Wood Bros. in 35 years...!  Believe David Pearson was the last driver to give them that win....and we know how long he's been out of the race car...

I didn't know that the Wood Bros. race team was an "arm" of Roush / Fenway Racing now....{That tells part of the tale}.  Engines, resources, etc.....

Happy Birthday Quentin. Seems like the Daytona 500 went a little better than you were expecting. Other than the one big crash, it looked like with the record number of cautions the guys were trying to destroy their cars one and two at a time! I didn't read the TV schedule correctly yesterday, and since the Curling I wanted to watch was on a premium channel so TSN could broadcast the race, I got to see most of it.

At this moment Ontario is playing Prince Edward Island.

I see it is already 24° with a high of freezing today. It is clear but a 15 mph wind is giving us a windchill of 12°.

No new RR news around here today.

Thanks for breakfast CW, and I am going to get back to the Curling.

....Wow....Sounds like it's still Winter up in NY.  We were lucky this time as the Winter storm that came across yesterday went north of us.

Got nothing of it.  41 degrees here right now.  We're to have a roller coaster week for temps. but nothing severe as we've had several times back when we were still in deep Winter.  Got rid of all ice and snow.

I wonder what is different with the NL cams that you, Larry, and Jen seem to have no problem getting the multi cams there.....I get number 1 and 2 just fine, but no such luck securing the others....When I try, they just flip thru one after the other.....??

Ms Mook - while I was watching Sat AM one of the owls spent most of the time with its head poked inside the box.  Perhaps thinking about wallpaper patterns or how to arrange the furniture...

Took a visiting firefighter (from SC) for a tour of the river and area today.  He bought lunch.  At least it was a nice, sunny (and cold - +11F) day.  I think the highlight of the trip, though, was a visit to a fire station holding an old Ahrens Fox piston pumper...

Been a busy citizen these past couple of days:  Saw KCS with 2 NS on headend.  Grain train going east.

Hawk 1 Train 1 Pigeon 0.  Hawk flushed a pigeon, ran it into a coal train, then had to patiently wait until that train and a freight went by before it could retrieve the meal.  Definitely meals on wheels.

Went to city park yesterday.  Been enjoying the 60+ weather these last few days.  Local FD was practicing with a  nearby town Vol FD on water rescue.  They were all in wet suits and had people with lines attached to them, pulling them in and out.  There was still some ice, but around the edges of this 112 acre lake/dam it was water.  While they were practicing they were watching a couple of dim bulb young boys out on the ice.  They were the only ones out there.  The boys were quite a ways from the fire personnel and sure enough, one of them fell in.

He flew out of that water almost as fast as he fell in.  And....they both had on only knee-length pants!

The fire dept used hand signals to see if they needed help or rescuing, but the boys sheepishly signaled no - and had to walk about 3/4 of a mile back to their car - on the ice.  FD watched them the whole way.  Ambient temp about 60 - with stiff south breeze.  Wonder if somewhere in that dim bulb of a brain he figured it felt a little cold?

That lake is deep - probably 12 feet at least in the center and it was just renovated, so there is a shelf around the edges and then the drop off.  Duh!  Double Duh!  Fortunately we always carry binoculars, so could follow the free thriller!

Must go see if I can find two owls on the NL webcam.  I think that is what the box is meant to be - so furniture should be arriving any day now.

Watched the Helmond nestcam around 6 pm, their time.  Dinner was mouse au gratin served on the front porch!.  Ugh!  Still  !!!!

Think I will skip supper tonite!

Since no one had any suggestions, I decided to fix a little bit of each of the menu options for this afternoon/evening.  For the (a)pizzas, there are two extra large of each kind.  The Chinese will be beef fried rice.  The Italian will be spaghetti w/meat balls, garlic bread and tossed salad.

Hope you all enjoy your afternoon, take care, and see you all later.

My goodness, I hope the site stays up long enough for me to type this. It is a cold one here this morning, -4°F with a windchill of -18°F. It is partly cloudy with still unpleasantly high relative humidity.

Unbelievably, I have almost finished watching the first Curling game of the day. The Canadian Women's Curling championship is being played in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It is in the Atlantic Time Zone, so the first draws start at 6:30 AM MST. There are three games a day now until Thursday. Now that I have my computer set up to receive TV, I will still be able to get things done.

No new news on the RR front beyond the fact that this really cold weather is still shortening train lengths.

 Modelcar:

To any Nascar fans out there....my thoughts on tomorrows race.  First off, I wonder about the new proceedure of 1 + 1 nose to tail to make a faster lap, but it looks like a potential for a massive wreck.

Quentin, at one time I did follow Indy type car racing and to a lesser extent NASCAR, but in the last 15-20 years or so the only race I really try to seriously watch is the Indianapolis 500. I hope you enjoy today's race, and now that I know it is on I will see about flipping channels to see what is going on.

Bruce

Bruce...............In about a half hour we should have the beginning of todays Nascar program.  I have no idea who might have the best chance to come to the front on the last lap today.....Just hope we don't have a massive wreck.  I'm afraid that pushing a car at 200 mph might get into a fiasco.

The Indy 500 kind of fell out of grace for some recent years as the two sanctioning bodies had gone their separate ways...But now it's back together again, and perhaps it can gain some respect again.

Certainly, Danica Patrick has put some spark into it these last few years.  Now she has commited to run some Nascar action too....In fact, she finished 14th in the Nationwide race this weekend.

....Sat. morning, with partly sunshine....a little frost earlier, but now we're above freezing.

Just made a trip to Meijer's to get a freshly broasted chicken fully cooked....Have to arrive about 10 or they will be sold out...each day.

This will be used tomorrow when we get home from church instead of going to a resturant, as I'm a Nascar fan, and certainly want to catch at least most of the 500.

Find these chickens are really always good tasting and really provide plenty of food for us...Plus add some good {Bob Evans}, mashed potatoes...also purchased at Meijers.....{and they always are very good}....And whatever else, and we have a very good meal.

To any Nascar fans out there....my thoughts on tomorrows race.  First off, I wonder about the new proceedure of 1 + 1 nose to tail to make a faster lap, but it looks like a potential for a massive wreck.

And with that new proceedure of racing, and the evenness of cars....and restrictor plates....and now minimizing the cooling air opening to prevent extended running nose to tail...{rear one will heat up}, if in that position too long.....Have no idea who might win this one.

Jr. is running better, and is in a long dry spell, so I'd say he has to be counted as one candidate...even though he must start from the rear {instead of on the pole, which he earned}, becaue of wrecking his 500 car the other day.

Richard Childress' cars are running better too....so maybe one of them....??

Good Saturday morning everyone.  Joe, thanks for fixing breakfast this morning.  Decided to sleep in this morning, so I'm glad you were able to get breakfast.  Think I needed the extra sleep!

Mudchicken, hope Gus is back to his regular self before too long.

I had the entry door open awhile ago, so I could watch for the paper guy to show up.  Trapper was sitting on the floor, looking outside.  Along came a stray kitty cat, and, low and behold, she came up onto the porch, and sat at the door, looking at Trapper.  Then he started to meow, and I had to get up, pick him up, and close the door!  Didn't want him waking up the other two, with his caterwalling.  Going to have to watch, and make sure he's not down by the door, if we have to open it to get the mail, or anyone comes ringing the doorbell.  Don't want him running outside, to find a new playmate!

Everyone have a good day, take care, and see you all later.

Gotta watch kissing those doggy booboos.  Sometimes they get a little protective of them....

Winter's back, after a reasonably nice day.  There is fresh snow on the ground, although I think most of it has gotten blown into tomorrow, the way the wind has been blowing.  The temp is back down to freezing.

Couldn't sleep (which is why I'm on at Oh-dark-thirty).  Check the Dutch railcam and saw not one, but two owls on the IR cam.  It's Saturday AM there so no early commuters on the roads.  No trains while I was watching, either.

Time to try sleeping again.  Headed for the RR shop again tomorrow.  We've got a locomotive to prep for paint...

Oh no!  My friend Gus has a boo-boo!  I hate that when that happens.  He will need his boo-boo kissed and I am too far away.....

Fortunately, I rubbed my own back and managed to get rid of the sore muscle.  Then the Driver took me out to watch trains and gave me a tiny Dove candy.  All is better in my world.

Trains ain't bad, either.  BNSF stock should rise!

Enjoying the last of the 50+ degree weather for a while, winter returns.

Mookie can get crabby and grumpy with Gus. He is now at home after the Vet removed a large growth from his right rear knee. He looks a little silly with the "Ace" bandage starting at his hip going down to his paws with just a little black tuft of fur at bottom. When the pain pills wear off he gets really vocal and grumpy. The other two dogs are giving him lots of space.

I got called out this morning on personal business and am only now checking out the forum. Everything is under control, but it is cold out there.

-2° and clear, and the humidity has gone down to 54%. It is going to be brutal out there tonight though; -17°F, not counting windchill, and the relative humidity is going back up to 78%.

It was interesting to watch how bitterly the lady news anchor and the weatherman were complaining about the cold on last night's 11:00 news. It is only the third week of February and we can still get some nasty weather here yet.

There are going to be short trains rolling over the Canadian west tonight, due to trouble keeping up pressure in the brake lines.

Good to see everyone here again today.

Quentin, I sure hope you are right, about the weather!  How are you and Jean?  Sure do hope you're both healing nicely.

Here is our Friday Fish Fry menu:

FISH:  Cod, talapia, flounder, haddock, halibut, perch, salmon patties, tuna steaks

SIDE DISHES:  Baked beans, corn on the cob, cole slaw, fries, hush puppies, breaded fried mushrooms, cornbread, macaroni & cheese

DESSERTS:  Yellow cake w/chocolate icing, apple, peach and strawberry cobblers, pecan pie and yellow cake w/caramel icing.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, take care, and if anyone is close to Mookie's area, who is very good as massages, I say Go For It.  Just be sure you have plenty of chocolate to give her.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Partly sunny this monring........and the snow / ice has been eliminated....Wow....grass visible again, things look so different.

Danger of falling on our massive ice coverage now has passed.  Lots of victims in this area from that cover of ice from several weeks ago.  No storm, just an accumulation of ice at that time.

In the high 40's earlier this morning.  Still think we've hit the low spot of this Winter, in this area....I understand March can provide almost anything, but since we've been provided with plenty of the unwanted stuff so far this Winter, I'd bet against much more of it....
