Hi everyone. Overcast in NC and supposed to go up to 50, so hopefully I can get some brush clearing done today. Met two ex-co-workers yesterday at a coffee house in the old industrial area of Winston Salem and got to watch a long freight go by right outside the building, almost close enough to touch. It was a Norfolk Southern (of course), led by a 3-loco lashup that I couldn't identify, but I'm *guessing* were dash-8's? Hopefully somebody more knowledgable (which would be just about everyone) can tell me how to find out? I thought I'd memorized the road number of the lead engine, but looking it up later told me it would have to have been a GP-38, so obviously I got it severely wrong!
Good Morning.
We woke up to a dull dull dull day tat will see a high of 30F --and between 2-4" of snow on top of our 44" snow cover...
I'm going out with a friend of ours to finish picking up some Xmas goodies then tonight finish of the grocery buying...then we be ready for any't'in'...
I got an opportunity to actually record a 'live' Alco RS2 ---this should be interesting...as I'm using one of these when I do that..
mmmm-- I got a tripod with this one as well..

BraddS - not any more knowledge here on identity, but will verify that the BNSF still has some GP38's pulling freight. Most of our freight sightings are the "older" engines - leaving the "newer" ones for all the coal that goes thru here.
Dash 8's are pretty scarce, but Dash 9's seem to be abundant right now. (Whoop!)
If your information source is very current, you may have the right designation. If not, it could be a renumber.
My best source of info is to read the type on the engine itself. when possible.
I envy your location in the coffeehouse. I would have many nose prints on their windows!

A surprising drop in temp these past several hours...First noted 30.9 earlier, and now its approching 20. Did not hear anyone talking about this.
Very, very light snow flakes coming down....Overcast. But pretty light.
Noted on a full country weather map this morning, that system of much rain in Calif. is {will be}, moving east with wide spread snow, rain and freezing conditions, patterns that seems to sag down as it crosses the country. In fact, seemed to leave us almost not touched with it...But we'll watch for a more specific determination just where the stuff will be headed.
Quentin
Quentin, the rain has hit Mohave co. Az. Now parts of the County and 4 houses are moving downstream as Beaver creek is 3ft. high , (normaly ) 1 ft. Winter has gotten off to a roaring start. However the ski bucks & bunnys are hitting the slopes in Flg. as snow is abundunt.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Cannonball
Y6bs evergreen in my mind
Yes, Cannonball...this Winter in some parts of the country seem to be acting very extreme....Goes along with the warming of some parts of the Pacific ocean, I suppose....What is it this time...El Nina.??
I know some of those low gullys in Az. can become roaring streams quickly with these kinds of weather happenings....and sometimes they have cars floating around up in Las Vegas {NE}, with extremes, and so on.
Today...now, we're upping the temp again...It's now back up to 26. Don't know where that quick cool down came from this morning. I noted on a weather map, it showed some lake effect snow bleeding down over northern Indiana earlier, but looks like that's all finished now.
Mohave Co....that's a big one....knew the Sheriff and wife when we were working out there years ago. The wife was a mgr. for quite some time at the La Posada restaurant there in Kingman along rt. 66 just up over the "hill" coming east out of town. That restaurant was brand new then....and nice.
Christmas Greetings to you and family Cannonball....
Afternoon, everyone.....
well, as seems to have happened every Christmas for the last few years, something crazy happened, got a load last night that unfortunately did not make it on time (ran out of hours to drive), so am sitting over in Daleville, IN, waiting for the 7am appointment tomorrow morning. Case of 66mph truck, 100mph dispatcher......
Quentin, noticed the bottom dropped out of the temps too this morning, was 31 when I went to bed at 4am EST, and was 21 when I woke up at 1145. Forecast said nothing about it, was worried I would have fuel issues. Nice thing about sitting at this Pilot/Denny's is that CSX runs directly behind here, lots of variety this morning...
That photo looks like it's the attack of the 50-foot kitty, our first cat liked to do that when we set up the large village at my parents, the two we have now don't care for the decorations as much....
See everyone later.....

Hi Quentin...Yes we are in a La Nina pattern this winter.
While the folks in California and the Pacific northwest have been getting pounded, we here in Texas have remained relatively mild and very dry. That is what usually happens down here during La NIna. All the storms pass to the north of us. It is currently 58 degrees here as I write this.
We have a shot for some rain from this latest California storm.
Hello Randy:
Boy Randy....you were getting very close. We're just about 7 mi. from the location you mentioned of Daleville, In.
And the double east / west CSX line you were near passes right thru Yorktown which is a town just a few miles east of where you were.
That's the line you may have seen me comment about {on here}...a bit farther east in Muncie, and being visible just across rt. 32 as one is in Bruner's restaurant.
And as for that temp drop this morning we commented about....That was strange....Seemed to do it quickly too.
Happy Motoring.
Ok on..."La Nina" this season....It does seem familiar when the west coast is having nasty rain, etc....as now, we've had "different" weather patterns here too.
This December has been on the cold side. Believe I noted a figure that we're in a pattern to be the coldest Dec. since 1958. My unoffical snow counting figures are more {at this point}, than last season. Up to now, 10". And that is more than normal...for here.
When we get a cold Dec. we very often get unusual "warm" temps in January. Your 58 degrees sounds ok for now Murray....
One thing about it this season so far, the snow has come 2 or so inches at a time and not one or two larger snowfalls.
Somebody's been running the Zamboni on our roads here - lot's of folks finding out where the ditches are located (much to their chagrin). Just got back from a call for a pickup well off the road, and on it's side. By the looks of the skid marks, the driver almost made it before the truck rolled over. At least nobody has been hurt so far, other than the EMT from the ambulance whose feet suddenly were in front of him, rather than under him...
Looks like it will turn to snow later.
At least we aren't getting rain like the left coast. Syracuse has already gotten almost a year's worth of snow already, though.

Good Thursday morning everyone. 27 degrees here in Louisville this morning. Think we're to make to the mid 30s today.
Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station this morning: bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, biscuits, gravy, sausage, scrambled eggs., (and there's a few Christmas cookies laid out also).
I think I got all my cooking and baking done yesterday. Was in the kitchen all day, roasting turkey, making home made biscuits, dressing. Baking Christmas cookies (sugar), getting them iced and decorated. So you all have plenty of Christmas cookies to last until next week. Also made some fudge, Mookie: chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla.
Everyone have a very good morning, keep warm, take care and see you all later. Has anyone heard anything from Tom (Grandpaw Pettibone?
good morning

Good morning..
Welp, we got another 6" of the snowstuff on us last night. So we be out there with the Powerwagon getting the driveway plowed out...again And the wonderful weatherbeguessers have us as getting another 4-6" of the stuff by tomorrow ..again If we get the full extent we will be under ...instead of the current 56" of snowcover ...under 66" instead We actually exceeded our total from last year by something like 48" so far...and we only JUST entered winter season
Audrey and I are going out later this aternoon to our fave diner and sit with the neighbours as we watch other people go...AAAACCCCHHHH!!!...over their Christmas shopping...
Have a good day people..
Good morning. I am home from the hospital. What was supposed to be minor day surgery turned into kidney surgery and 10 days stay. I am still plenty sore and am moving slowly, but on the improve. Thanks for your prayers. All were appreciated.
34 degrees in Carolina.

Morning Tom! Sorry to hear about your extended hospital stay. Hope they treated you well!
Morning, folks. I got up barely 20 minutes ago and right now we have a temp of 25 degrees here in Sioux Falls - our wind chill factor leaves us at 17 F. We've got freezing fog and 100% chance of snow for today, hopefully we will not get more than an inch or two.
I am going to try to get a few Christmas cards mailed - and I know I am late in getting this done, and then I have some last minute Christmas shopping to do. Also, I need to run to my pharmacy to get a 90 day supply on all my medications. I save money if I buy my medications in bulk.
I finished decorating my front deck with four strings of outdoor mini lights last night, and it sure is pretty, especially if you view it from across the street. It was just warm enough for me to be able to handle my heavy duty staple gun with my bare hands.
Joe: very good! I always drink my milk. And if it has a little something to go with it....well, so much the better.
CW - not a fudge person - believe it or not. Way too sweet, even!
Tom - you were missed. Glad you are back with us. Rest and then rest some more.
Wow!! Tom!! Glad to see you back...do take care now...
Tom, I am glad, like all the others here, to learn that you are finally out of the hospital and back on the mend. God bless you and take care.
Tom, I am glad you are back home. Sometimes, a visit to the hospital for something minor can, indeed, lead the discovery of something far more serious--Utah's attorney general went in for something about his appendix, and he was found to have stage three colon cancer; he now is tohave chemotherapy (I hope radiation is not indicated, since I am having complications from the radiation that followed my surgery almost five yers ago). I trust your kidney problem did not begin to come close to being so serious.
Mookie: "Joe: very good! I always drink my milk. And if it has a little something to go with it....well, so much the better" Hmm, what do you like to go with your milk? I am reminded about an anecdote about one of my mother's brothers when he was young, who, after drinking eggnog for the second time, commented that it did not taste like the first eggnog he had drunk. My grandmother (strictly "temperance") replied, "Will, that eggnog had ingredients in it." Uncle Will: "I want some 'gredients; I want some "gredients!"

Good to hear from you again, Tom....
Well, got in and out of Wal-Mart this morning with little fuss, sitting in Fort Wayne, IN, waiting on another driver to bring me my load home, though it looks like it will be Christmas Eve before I will get there, they moved the drop area to Neenah instead of Richfield. Running about par for me on getting home the last three years, '09 was a late multi-stop, '08 the fuel in the truck gelled and left me on the side of the road. Oh well......
Nice out now, about 35 here with sun, supposed to get snow tomorrow, they are not saying yet how much, guess this storm is confusing everybody.
See everyone later.......
....Wishing a speedy recovery Tom. Hope you can get back to normal routine soon.
Our pre Christmas Thursday is overcast....and still up in the air whether we get snow starting overnight and on into tomorrow or not. have seen reports both ways.
Sure would like to attend our Christmas Eve program at the church tomorrow night, and have invited a {waitress}, friend to come and attend {go}, with us....
Temp now just rising above 30...That's encouraging, and it's pretty bright regardless of the overcast.
Tom - As long as you didn't wake up in a bathtub full of ice...
Made a trip out to pick up a couple of things. Lots of people out, but it wasn't a madhouse. Traffic wasn't bad, either.
Time to work on a slight modification to grandson's gift - a toy guitar. Needs a strap...

Be safe on the highway Randy.
Everybody be sure to give these good truckers lots of room, some turn signals/flash of the headlights and a friendly wave.
Randy, doesthe northern tier states still sell 60/40 fuel at the fuel depots?? That is designed for very cold weather to keep it from turning into jello. We used that when running the central and northern tiers. Just curious or is there ( tank heaters).
Good evening everyone. And Tom, WELCOME BACK!! We've missed you!!
Well, Walt finally got the lights on the tree, and I got the decorations on it this afternoon. It looks really good. I think Sarah's going to put the icicles on it later.
For our supper tonight, I've made some sloppy Joes, w/fries and we have tossed salad to go with it. There's also some beef noodle casserole and sliced Italian bread.
Christmas cookies for dessert, along with your choice of eggnog (non alcoholic) and broiled custard.
Tomorrow, I'll slice some of the turkey and ham, and heat some of the Christmas fixings to have with the turkey and/or ham.
Randy, be careful on the roads. We want you to make it home safe and sound.
Has anyone heard from Ed Blysard? It sure would feel more like Christmas, with his Christmas story!! Guess with work and the grandbaby, he (they) are really, really busy.
.....And I wonder if Ed has installed the Christmas Antlers on the Jeep yet.....
evening
