Murphy Siding

The first day of Christmas is December 25th- Christmas day.  The 12th day is January 6th.

     -Norris

Norris knows what the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas are. All the days before Christmas are simply preparation for Christmas (and the merchants take as much advantage as they can of those days). In some churches (Episcopal, Lutheran, and Catholic, especially), the four weeks or so before Christmas are celebrated as Advent, in which the First Coming of Christ is celebrated and the Second Coming is looked forward to (there are four Sundays in Advent, and the first Sunday marks the beginning of the season; Advent lasts from 22 to 28 days). Also, many churches celebrate Epiphany on 6 January, to commemorate the coming of the Magi (they did not get to Bethlehem on the Birthday; they found the family in a house and not a stable, so they should not be included in Manger Scenes) and, thus, the manifestation of the Savior of the World to all peoples (Epiphany = showing forth). So, the Twelve Days of Christmas last from 25 December through 5 January.

Personally, thanks to all for your concern about Ricki. She did not move to a rehabiltation place today (paperwork can be time-consuming), but we expect the transfer to be tomorrow morning. She was better today than she was yesterday.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  Larry, very sorry to hear about your friend.  It is tough, isn't it?

Johnny, glad to hear that Ricki was feeling a little bit better yesterday.  May she continue to feel a little better each day.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, oatmeal, toast, bagels and bear claws.

Everyone have a good morning, keep yourselves warm and take care.

Gee, another very slow day in here.  Everybody (who isn't working) out Christmas shopping?  Well, whatever you're doing, there are some pots of soup, stew and chili on the serving station, staying hot for you all:

1.  Vegetable beef

2.  Cream of broccoli

3.  Tomato

4.  Mild chili

5.  Beef stew

That should help warm you up on a very chilly day like today.

Everything quiet around here, nothing new to report on anything. You all take care and see you all later.

A cold sunny day here in Muncie.  But they are talking about a Winter storm warning.  I've not been home until the past hour to keep track of any serious weather report yet.  Believe southern Indiana is to get more of the snow activity.

Heard them say 2 to 4" of the stuff by tomorrow afternoon.

And last evening I finally had to bite the bullet and see just what I could do to help the performance of this machine.

It's been fighting us for some time...First slowing....than, a pesky "not responding" condition, and that was getting worse....then finally, yesterday I could not get it to boot up.  Just kept cycling, and going thru cycles of "checking hard dr. disks...".

So I finally started on it with a "restore program", and after much work got it thru that.  This morning, had to work with Comcast  to energize our email, and thought I had it configured {with the guidance of Comcast help and support},  and now my email program is visible, but can't bring it up to work with it.  Also, I lost my Service Pack 2 in the Restore process, and I'll have to redo that....also my Norton security has to be unloaded and then reinstalled....

Surprisingly, I got right back on the railroad forms without any trouble.

But seems I have quite a bit to fight thru before we're back where we need to be.

But....the computer is fast now, which it had really slowed before I started this program, etc.....We'll keep trying.

And....To Johnny, we pray for getting Ricki back home when the conditions allow it.

Six inches of snow in the front yard this morning, which called for the mechanical snowthrower. The armstrong snowthrower could have taken care of it, but the mechanical one was much faster. Since the snow was mainly powder, the only clogging trouble came in the spots with melted snow at the bottom. The low today was predicted to be 32, with a high of 36.

After getting all cleaned up and such, I went over to the hospital and then was able to go to another hospital where Ricki will get proper exercising and such to make her closer to all new. Thanks for your concern and prayers.

Congrats Joe!

Weather here in central North Carolina is clear and cold, with lows in the single digits above zero. Pretty warm by midwest standards, but of course here it is perceived as record lows...Hope everyone is keeping warm!

Good Thursday morning, everyone!  Joe, congratulations on the new great nephew.

Welcome  BraddS to The Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner.  Always good to see new people come in.

Here in Louisville this morning, we have a chilly 31 degrees, with freezing rain.  All schools in the area are closed, along with some businesses.

Coffee, juice, hot chocolate, hot cider, and hot water for tea are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, toast, an assortment of fruit, bagels and bear claws.

Johnny, please keep us updated on Ricki:  sounds like she's doing a little better!

Wonder how Tom is faring this morning.  Hope he is doing better, also!

Everyone be extra careful out there this morning, if you're in this wide belt getting the snow/rain/sleet/freezing rain.  See you all later.

I'll take the snow over the ice we got in Effingham overnight, may make the drive interesting down to Cherokee, AL.....

Have just been trying to keep everything thawed and moving lately, had ice fog in WI yesterday, which along with the -10 temperature, probably helped cause a major wreck on US41, involving multiple tractor-trailers.  After getting onto state roads, which were still slick, had no trouble.

Back to checking the radar, and figuring out if the salt trucks made it out yet.....

Hi everyone,

Freezing rain here in the Piedmont section of NC, couldn't get out of my driveway for my 8:10 dentist appointment even AFTER salting twice. Called in and found out the dentist isn't there either, so no penalty (I guess).

Randy, I LOVE your signature line! I had forgotten about that obscure SCTV series on blowing things up, sure do miss those guys!

Well, it looks like we (Louisville Metro area) received anywhere from 1/4 in. to 1/2 in. of ice from 10 p.m. Wed. night thru this morning.  Walt went out and put down snow/ice melt just as Sarah was coming in from work a couple of hours ago.  Temp seems to be hovering around the 29 degree F. mark.

I've warmed up the chili, soups and stew from yesterday, and it is on the serving/warmer station.  There's also some sandwich fixings, including PB&J, tuna salad, roast, turkey and pastrami.

Everyone have a safe afternoon, keep warm and take care.

Judging by the traffic on the police scanner, the lake effect is in full force in the southern part of the county.  Only getting the occasionally dusting hereabouts.

Joe - congrats on the addition to the extended family!

Wrapping up a pie for the train crew.  Some good sharp cheddar cheese will be a nice counterpoint.

Of course, now I have to do the resulting dishes...

Well, I hope the kids around here had already had their Christmas parties at school:  they won't be back until after the first of the year.  JCPS has called off school for tomorrow, which would have been the last day before the Christmas break.  We still have a lot of ice covered side streets, so they cancelled classes for tomorrow.

I received a message on facebook, from someone for Tom.  He wanted me to let everyone know here, that his surgery is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Friday.  Let's all keep him in our thoughts, for a successful surgery, recovery and being back home.

There's still some soup, chili, and stew for supper tonight, and I made up some more sandwiches, to go with the soup and chili.

Everyone have a good evening, take care and see you all in the mornin'.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  Cloudy, with a temp of 28 degrees on this Friday morn.  Temp's not going to rise much today, our projected high is to be 31 degrees.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider, and hot water for tea are fresh and ready to go.  Mookie, if you're here, your coffee mug is ready for you.

On the serving station this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, toast, french toast, bagels, bear claws.

I hope everyone is doing o.k. this morning.  Think maybe we need to take roll call, as it's been quite slow in here lately.  Remember Tom this morning, as he's scheduled to have his surgery in a little over an hour.

Everyone take care, have a good morning, and see you all later on.

Email back up and running.  Had to really go into this machine these last few days to see if we could take care of several problems....such as slow operation...."not responding on pages"....Something was really messing with it.  So after several days working thru several programs along with my ISP {Comcast} help and support group, we're in much better shape now, but still trying to fine tune where I want it to be.  Had to reinstall SP 2.

Outside right now....Just a few snow flurries, and overcast.  Don't know of any serious systems to bother us much today....25 earlier this morning.  But I see some parts of  {particularly} the south and east, has some weather brewing.

Sounds like ice down in Walt's / CW's area....So far this season, we've stayed clear of that stuff.  But snow fall is above avg. so far for this time of the season.  Thankfully though, it has come in small amounts at a time....Not a big overbearing snowfall at once.

Right now we have a temp of 12 degrees here in Sioux Falls and we have a wind chil factor of 1 above 0. It will not get much warmer here than that this afternoon.

I am planning on baking bread and then making the trek to US Bank in downtown Sioux Falls where my brother Tim works, tomorrow is his birthday and I want to present him with a loaf of freshly baked bread.  Chef

CW, Ed Blysard and a couple others have recommended that I post my Dad's story of Shep during the Christmas season every year, and I will do that. I have Dad's original narated version on a CD, along with the story of Alfred Burt and his Christmas Carols, this story which I had presented in this forum within the last few years. If anyone would like a copy of the CD, I think it might be feasible for me to burn off extra CD's with my computer.....if I can figure out how to do that.

Sounds like a good idea, Ray.

Quentin, yep, we still have ice on the sidewalks, side streets and grassy areas.  No sunshine or tad bit warmer temps to get rid of it.  The meterologists are calling for more snow, starting sometime Tuesday afternoon, evening, on thru Wednesday.  So far, predicted total is one to two inches.

Here is our menu for tonight:

FISH:  bass, catfish, cod, flounder, haddock, hallibut, jumbo butterfly shrimp, talapia

Side Dishes:  baked beans, cole slaw, corn on the cob, breaded deepfried mushrooms, fries, hush puppies and mac & cheese

Desserts:  chocolate cake w/white icing, yellow cake w/chocolate icing, apple, peach and strawberry cobblers, blackberry, blueberry and pecan pies.  Ice cream, if anyone wants it.

Everyone enjoy your supper/dinner, have a good evening, and take care.  Think Walt and I are going to put up our Christmas tree and start decorating it this evening.

Good Saturday morning everyone.  And Joe, thank you for taking care of breakfast this morning.  I've been up since just before 5, but decided to be lazy this morning.

I'll be sure to save you three some pizza tonight.  With hardly anyone coming in here lately (or at least hardly anyone posting), will probably just make two of each kind of pizza.

Everyone have a great day, be safe while you're out and about, stay warm as possible, and take care.  See you all later.

....Sunshine and blue skies here today.  Believe we had about 15 this morning for the low around 8 am when I first looked.

Cold is the word for us the next few days. 8.5" total snow here so far this season, and that's a bit ahead of last year.

Still cold and dreary here in Louisville, but at least it was a little bit "warmer" today, and not quite as breezy.

Here is our Pizza Menu for tonight:

1.  Anchovie

2.  Canadian bacon

3.  Cheese

4.  Chicago style

5.  Goetta

6.  Hawaiian

7.  Italian sausage

8.  Pepperoni/mushroom

9.  Supreme

For dessert, we have some nice, hot from the oven cobblers:  apple, blueberry, cherry, and peach.

I hope everyone is keeping warm, and that you've all had a pretty good day today.  Have a very good evening and take care.

Brrr.....

In Eau Claire tonight, decided to grab a hotel room tonight, get out of a cramped truck for a night.  Truck is still running outside, supposed to drop to zero tonight, so want to keep truck and fuel warm.  Should be home come Thursday for about two weeks for holidays and doctor appointment.

Brad, I can't take full credit for that line, I actually found it in a 'Hot Times On The High Iron' episode by J.D. Santucci, and thought it hilarious.  I'm actually too young for SCTV, being born in '79.

See everyone later.....

A little snow on the ground this morning, and a little rain this afternoon, with the temperature up in the forties during the day.

Ricki is more alert now and we discussed family Christmas gifts this afternoon, but her speech is still slow. She was supposed to have 4-6 half-hour sessions of therapy this morning, and she was wondering why she had only two.
