Paul, it's good to see you back in here. You don't visit us often enough. Hope you'll be coming in a little more often.
We are still getting pouring rain, and have had off and on again rounds of thunder. So far, I haven't noticed any lightning. Hum, I just looked out the window at the end of our stairs, and it looks like we might be getting a break from the rain for now. Although, the street is still wet. Just heard a vehicle go by, and you could hear the water moving.
For this afternoon and tonight, I have made a pot of vegetable beef soup and made up and baked some cornbread to have with the soup. Sounds like a good meal to have on a rainy day, doesn't it?
There is an assortment of our regular dessert menu, so help yourselves to whatever floats your boat.
About a year ago we thought about doing just that - though not as a substitute to cutting the the grass, but instead to control all the brush along the edges of our woods, especially 'invasive' and nuisance plants such as honeysuckle, multi-flora rose, garloic mustard, jewelweed, autumn olive, etc.
Since the 2 goats that we were contemplating renting - from a couple of girls nearby who were raising tham as a 4-H project - would have been at our property - which is less than 5 acres - for more than 1 day, we had to get a zoning permit for that as a 'temporary use', even though we're in a ''Rural-Holding'' = agricultural zoning district. OK so far, though a pain.
But, our immediate neighbors to the south objected and complained loudly and vigorously to the rest of the neighborhood, based on their [irrational] fear that the goats would attract predators like foxes and coyotes - which are already in the area - and wolves and bears, and which would no doubt attack their visiting grandchildren ! I kid you not. So, we withdrew that application - we'll fight that battle another day.
But don't worry, all is not lost - our current thinking is that if we 'board' the goats overnights at the nearby barn of the farmer we bought the land from, which is 1/4 mile away and more importantly, 2 townships distant - we're near the common corners of 3 'Whitehall' townships here - we don't need a permit, and those neighbors can go pound sand, or go to someplace else extremely warm . . . The scary thing is, they're both college-educated and employed full-time as college librarians, at 2 different local colleges/ universities - until 1 retired last month.
Nothing is ever as simple as it seems . . . .
Back to our mid-morning coffee break.
- Paul North.
AHA! - Now we know why there isn't enough water out west!

Good morning from Carolina. 75 and sunny at present. We had the primaries yesterday and my family did well. Remember Joe Wilson, the "You lie" guy? He is my cousin and got renominated for U S congressman. His son, Allan is in a runoff for Atty General.
Everyone take care and have a great day
.....Some rain activity over night....{Haven't looked in rain gauge}, but some rain this morning....on and off, but very mild. When I first looked, it was reading 69 degrees. Perhaps an overcast day with rain possibilities. Believe the sunshine is to return tomorrow. I am growing a hay field for a lawn again....Can't get on it with it so wet. And this is the 4th day since mowing....That's spells trouble....Growing so fast.
mudchickenHow does the cat do in moving vehicles?
The cats stay at the apartment and are taken care of by my sister, Millis has a "no pet" policy in the trucks......
Warm here this morning, temp actually went up overnight, about 62 right now, going for about 83 this afternoon. Getting things ready to go back into the truck, cleaned up all my mess from working on the layout and train cars. Will head to truck as soon as the mess in Milwaukee dies down.
Have a good day all, see everyone later......

Good Wednesday morning, everyone. My, what an overnight we had. Storms came in, around 4 a.m., with plenty of thunder, lightning and rain. Heard on the morning news that we collected 1 to 2 inches, and have more coming in around mid morning to noon time. Supposed to get up to 83, 84 degrees for a high today. Then tomorrow, back into the low to mid 90s thru the weekend.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station this morning: bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs.
Everyone have a good morning, and take care.
The mine here has the same problem that the one in Ohio had .... It's burning. (functioned 1886-1904...Connected underground to three other mines that played out about 1950)...The mine under I-470 (I-70 then) burned for years at Cambridge.
How does the cat do in moving vehicles?
mudchicken(Spent most of yesterday trying to sort out a mess created by town and highway people trying to railroad - this from the same 'burg that wants a public housing project built above an abandoned mine (built-in tommyknockers in every basement))
Mud: Sounds like the time a chunk of I-470 in Ohio dropped down, when an abandoned mine collapsed. Always wondered what the short stretch of concrete pavement was for there (rest of road is asphalt), then another driver told me. Apparently, while WV and PA dig down to abandoned mine tunnels and backfill them, Ohio does not......
Wonderful weather today, if one was a duck. Rain all day today, might have hit 60, not sure, very cool today. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice and in the 70s, just in time to go back out on the road. Heat makes a comeback for the weekend......
Working on the model trains again today, getting more cars converted over to Sergent couplers, and finding out just how many cars I have. Let's just say I could make a long freight with what I have. Layout is slowly coming along.....
Hmm.... Cat is snoring again (mine at the apartment, not the one in the diner!), guess she had a good day......
Q: Mudchicken, sounds like you didn't have a very good birthday. Did you get the mess straightened out?
A: Methinks the mess will only get bigger. A certain city and a certain highway department are already in denial about what they have already done. When (if ever) they clean up the BP mess, they can start right in on this headache.
Sorry about getting in here so late this afternoon. We had 66 people at Produce this morning, and the truck was a little bit late. Then, we had to sort through the potato bags, as the bags were wet, and therefore, had some rotten taters (nice new, small red potatoes at that). We also got veggie trays w/vegetable dip, fresh spinach, strawberries and individual serving bottles of chocolate milk.
After I got back to the house, I went back to sleep.
(Late) lunch and our supper menu tonight:
Country-fried steak w/steak fries, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/milk gravy, mashed taters, and a veggie tray with broccoli, cauliflower, celery and carrot sticks.
And if anyone wants any dessert, there's fresh strawberry shortcake w/real whip cream topping to go over the strawberries.

Everyone have a good afternoon (what's left of it here on the East Coast), a good evening ,and everyone take care.
OMG!!! - Had a whole year flash by in one direction and then go back the opposite direction.Didn't think to take notes - dagnabbit!
Mooks - thunder and lightning, but no rain for the past few days...send back the rain!

Q - weather report overnite from here: Heavy rain, one crack of thunder, and no hail here at house. We just have very normal weather and noisy neighbors in our neighborhood. But nice rain. Moved on and will be sunny rest of week.
Back to whatever happens next....

Good morning all. I followed up on Marvin Isley. He was suffering from diabetes and his legs were amputated a while back. They were great entertainment back in the day.
Good morning. 78 and sunny in Carolina this lovely day. Not much to report at this time, other than to say thanks for breakfast. Everyone take care and stay cool
Rain is incoming sometime today.....Overcast now and has been all morning. Mod. temps. Radar shows it coming in from the west / northwest sometime today. Jean commented of rather large size hail stones somewhere in Nebraska.....Your area Jen....?
More suff to continue to shape up around the house here....As a long time home owner, projects just seem to be ongoing....but of course, over the years that includes improvements and updates. And we like to keep things in order.
I like the lower temps. this week....Not that sweltering humidity / heat we get here in our area in Summer.
good morning

Good Tuesday morning, everyone. Nice and cool, with a temp of 71 this morning, should see a high somewhere in the 80s by 5 p.m.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including hot water for our hot tea drinkers. Freshly brewed iced teas (sweet and unsweetened) are in the fridge.
On the serving station this morning: oatmeal (raisin & spice), toast, turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, bagels and bear claws.
Mookie, here's a big slice of chocolate cake w/chocolate icing for you, along with your coffee mug!
On a somber note, I just heard on the local news, that one of the Isley Brothers has passed away. Anyone want to "Shout!"? Hasn't one of them been ill for the last couple of months? I seem to remember hearing that.
Well, guess I'll see you all after I get through with Tuesday Produce later this morning. You all have a good morning, and take care.
Mookie Yep! Get drunk, have a fight, get stupid, pass out! Miss the cake - again! Blah!

grampaw pettibone Quentin, we had a tornado come through the yard in 1977. It got a bunch of trees and my radio tower. Talk about action and noise, sounded like a dozen Big Boys and an Apollo moon rocket at the same time!

.....That's too close for comfort...We do live in so called Tornado alley here in Central Indiana, but we've been very fortunate here for a good length of time....We had this house built in 1971 and there have been times some have come close, but never right on us.
Hope you're having a great birthday, MC! Maybe I'll send you some nice weather as a gift! Or, perhaps I have something more sinister brewing in the labs of Weatherliar U.
Physics. For the next five weeks. Why am I doing this to myself? Why does meteorology have to involve all of this icky stuff? Questions with no known answers. My professor seems friendly enough, which should make things a little easier.

Lunch menu for this afternoon: BLTs with your choice of fries, curly fries or steak fries, garden salad
For dessert: There are two different birthday cakes: 1 chocolate cake w/vanilla icing and 2 yellow cake w/chocolate icing. Plenty of vanilla ice cream and blue Gatorade all around.
And for supper tonight, I'll fire up the grills again, and we'll have steak, baked taters, garden salad and, according to Mutt, "Denver fried chicken".
