grampaw pettibone Not sure if it was on this forum or another, but a while back, someone asked how the Marines got the name Leatherneck. I have found the answer. In the mid 19th century, Marine uniforms had a strip of leather sewed to the inside of their collars to prevent sagging and hold them up to regulation height. When hot and sweaty, this caused a myriad of problems and this was discontinued in 1878, but the name stuck. Now ye know. Thanks to ALL HANDS magazine, Nov 1954 for this info.

Whatever the start of the issue, the name came from leather stocks or collars that were issued to marines.

Good afternoon, all. Shirley, I couldn't agree with you more. Makes me wish that we still had Moms/Mothers like we had growing up! They (along with neighbors, other relatives, town folk knew where all the kids were, what they were doing, and keeping them in line. Now, if people try to do that, they get accused of abusing their kids. Oh well, such is life, isn't it.
to Aeden!! Hard to believe it has been one year since you let us know, Dan, of his birth! Time sure does fly. Think you'll be posting a few pics of his 1st birthday?
Well, for supper (or late lunch for people on the west and in the midwest), we have Italian spaghetti w/meat sauce, garden salad and Texas toast on the serving station.
We have beautiful blue skies with a current temp of about 78 degrees, with a lovely breeze out. If I felt better, I'd go for a good walk. Not feeling sick or anything, just kind of yecky (making a new word here, I guess).
Everyone have a good afternoon/evening, and take care.

Feeling better today. Spent yesterday morning at the ER with a severe pain in my abdomen - worthy of some heavy duty pain relief. All fine now, with possible diagnoses of gall bladder problems or ulcers. No history, so it's all new. Going for a consult this afternoon, and considering possible changes to the ol' diet... Not that it was terribly unhealthy, but it's possible certain things will be completely eliminated therefrom. We'll see.
And a happy birthday to Aeden. Be prepared for big changes - walking and talking will now become factors in your life!
I've got a bit of a "lab" now - a two-year-old, a one-year-old, and a newborn - I get to watch them work through their various phases.

Thank you!
A moment of silence for Rosenblatt Stadium also. That was the very last CWS game to ever be played at Rosenblatt. Next year, the CWS will be at our new downtown baseball stadium.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone. I'm sorry that I didn't make it back in here yesterday. Had several things to do, and never made it back in here. Produce went well. We had 62 people, and received potatoes, cantaloupes, romaine lettuce, small packages of mozzerella cheese, large bags of chopped cabbage, slaw mix. We ran out of everything, except the lettuce. Had three bunches of that left.
Coffee, juices and other a.m. beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station: bagels, bear claws, fresh cantaloupe chunks, and the regular breakfast menu.
Last evening, the three of us us were out in the front yard, Walt and Sarah doing yard work (Sarah mowing, Walt going along with the trimmer, and me "supervising". I noticed the doors were open to the Church (next to the Center, where we have the Produce every week. Three hours later, Walt and I are back out front, and the doors are still open. So I walk over, and no one is there. I check to make sure the entry door to the santuary are locked. They are. I'm looking around, and lo and behold, the Church elder pulls up in her car. I tell her what's going on, and we start investigating. From what we could figure out, with the help of a worker she was there to meet with, someone had been inside, and kicked the outer doors open. Now, they're going to have to have the front doors done again (and they had just been redone). I had noticed this between 5 and 8 p.m. last night.
This is also where the kids are tutored, and have their activities. Right now, until about two weeks before school resumes in August, they have what is called Freedom School. I bet the kids get a very good talking to this morning!
Well, enough on part of my day yesterday. Everyone enjoy your morning, and I"ll see you all later on.
low in the upper 40's tonight?? Time to get a sweatshirt for work tonight.cw thanks for supper tonight.
grampaw pettibonePaula, we too have a sad situation here. Saturday, a family had a fun day on the river. They were ashore and packing the car to leave and an aunt took the life vest off a 2 year old. A dog fight got their attention for about a minute and she was gone. They found her body in the river the next day. They are devastated and the hard hearted and cynical comments from the holier than thou bunch are making things worse for them.
mudchicken Mooks: Gotta come thru again Friday and Saturday on my way to and from the UP Tama Sub again. Seems our GPS data for a part of our project got corrupted when something overpowered our base radio and drowned out its signals (Iowa gnomes? - Hate it when that happens and you have to dash back to redo work to get it right and kill off the uncertainties) If we go through Lincoln at a decent hour and Willy isn't throwing big bolts of lightning around like last time, we'll call.....

Thanks for breakfast, and have a great day
Good Tuesday morning, everyone. We have 73 degrees this morning, high today is supposed to be 84. But the 'cold' front has yet to make it to us, so we have foggy, muggy conditions this morning. (We just have muggy conditions; foggy is out in the county/surrounding areas.)
Coffee, juices, etc., are fresh and ready to go. Regular breakfast items on the serving station (yes, bagels and bear claws included).
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all after I get through with Tuesday Produce.
Brian, I see no problem with the shots.Very sharp & defined. #5531looks like it will pass thru my
front room on my 18in. screen on full. Whoooo look out momma, ballast dust. LOL .
Respectfully, Jim
......And as it was supposed to be.....we've had a very nice day....Less heat and humidity...Should be a winner all week.
Jean and I even detailed our car.....wax etc.....and now hope to do the truck yet this week. Have to do so when the weather cooperates.
Quentin
know the road,know your load....
waited for the swamp to dry out.Matt is pulling weeds and I mowed the swamp.Matt said this is too much like work. Finally going to be a dry week(according to the guessers).Cw thanks for supper.Going to go get things ready for work.
'Tis been a nice day for working outside. Over in Davenport IA, a truck tangled with the Brady Street Viaduct. IAIS=1 U-Haul= Nil
Will walk all the way across the diner for a sloppy joe. Do like them! I am going to make my own sj' mix for supper and serve it in whole wheat tortillas. Yum.
BNSF picking up a little. Saw more freight than coal yesterday. Must have most of the flood damage fixed since they are now running trains south to St Joe, etc. Haven't done that all week.
Sir C - you are too far north for us if you are on 30. We don't even consider anything past Cornhusker "part of Lincoln". "Out there" is where all the activity takes place if it is going to happen. We don't need that! Same with south of us. Past highway 2 and we don't own it. Gotta stay in the bowl!
Walt put the flags back out this morning, and checked the rain guage. Said we got maybe a quarter inch of rain. Very cloudy and overcast, like we're about to get some more, which is expected, according to the noon weather report. It is definitely cooling off a little bit outside.
For the menu for the rest of the day, I have made some homemade sloppy joes. (None of the Manwich stuff in here. Got the recipe from my sister. If anyone would like it, email me, and I'll send it to you. Mama and I made it when I was growing up. Really good. Of course, for in here, I doubled the recipe.)
To go along with the sloppy joes, you can have fries or chips, and cole slaw or garden salad.
.....Finally, the rain has moved on. Now it looks like we're getting the nice sunshiny week we were forecast....Bright sunshine now with some white puffy clouds.
Rain in last 24: 2"...!

Good afternoon. 85 and sunny, headed for 94 and more thunder.
Paula, Paul said it best. Men will be lovers of self..... T'is indeed sad that some people just don't care about others at all.
Kinda slim in here today. Hopefully, things will pick up.
Good Monday morning, everyone. Brian, that is a very nice looking photo. Thank you for sharing with us!
Well, we did get some rain overnight. The morning news said we did get some thunder & lightning, but I never saw nor heard any of it. From what I can see from the kitchen window, we still have a little bit of rain coming down, or the street is just still wet from the overnight rain. Supposed to be getting a little bit more, and then it'll be out of here by around noon time. Our projected high today is to be 88, then the cold front comes in, and we'll be in the low to mid 80s thru Friday. It'll be nice sleeping weather!
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are ready to go: Mookie, here is your mug, ready for your coffee to be poured into it. (You and I seem to be the only ladies in here lately, so we have to look out for each other, don't we?)
On the serving station this morning: bagels, bear claws, canatloupe & watermelon chunks, turkey bacon, pork sausage, made-from-scratch buttermilk biscuits, sausage gravy and scrambled eggs.
I heard something really sad and heartbreaking on the news this morning. Saturday evening, an 11 year old boy was hit by a car (yep, the lady driving, was drunk), and he died at the hospital last night. When, if ever, will people learn not to drink and drive?!?! Granted, that boy was probably taller than I, but his life was 'shot out from under him', and I feel for family right now. Okay, I'm off my now.
Everyone have a good morning, and if anyone has any requests for lunch/supper/dinner, just let me know.
