Larry, I wish you well in your unpacking. It took me several days to get it done. Of course, there were two of us, and we were gone a little longer than you were. What took longer than perhaps it should was getting our swamp cooler going--I took the cover off the inside yesterday (the outside cover blew off before we left, so it gave the appearance of somebody home), and reconnected the water line to it today and got it going. As I recall I changed the filters last fall before shutting it up for the winter.

We have had a few days with the high in the eighties-nineties, so it feels good to get the upstairs cool before we go to bed.

Ricki is doing much better after her TIA 13 days ago, but she needs more assistance in moving around than she did before we left.

Home, sweet home.  Got up at 0530 to put one of the son's dogs out - it was 74.  When I left his house at 8 it was already 80.  I stayed right on the cusp of 80 degrees until late afternoon back in NY.

It's 67 here now.  Brrrrr!  (Relatively speaking, after enduring high 90's all week in MD).

Stopped in on the way through to visit the GVT dispatchers in Scranton (right next to  Steamtown, which was hopping with the NRHS convention).   Didn't go into Steamtown, but did take the time to watch the "yard" excursion wander around a bit.  Both cars were packed.

Speaking of packed, I still am.  Time to unload the truck.

A co-worker of mine told me once that he knew of an abandoned rail line in the woods that had several sealed boxcars left on it. We were gonna go see what was in them after it got cold, but I was in a very bad wreck that resulted in my retirement. I have lost track of him, now, but will always wonder what and why.....

Update on bear: Sorta dropped off the news, but somebody on FB said they had caught him and transported him to the other side of the boondocks. He was a juvenile that had probably been kicked out by his mother and was trying to stake out some territory.

We have had thunder and some rain now for over 3 hours now, so we have made up for missing it last night.

Maintain your cool and stay safe

Walt says he and Sarah discovered an NC&SL boxcar abandoned along with some other rolling stock & wondered why they have been neglected. I enhanced one of his pics. I think I know why.

Heat hard on the equipment as well, having to turn on the engine fan on hard pulls to keep the coolant below 200.

 Randy:

I'm wondering why over the road trucks don't have thermostatically controlled radiator cooling fans....Is it simply to conserve HP....?  Seems it might be easy to be distracted and perhaps overlook the rising engine coolant temp. at times.....

Quentin:  They do, but they are set to come on at about 210 degrees, and by that time, you are doing real damage to the oil and engine, and with the mileage on this truck (just turned over 717K this morning), I don't want to hurt this one more than it already is.  It's usually better (and most guys preach it as common sense) to turn on the engine fan to keep everything cool, than to let the engine computer decide when.

Heading back to Wisconsin with a load of battery parts, should be there Sunday.  Still hot in Cartersville, GA, about 97, and getting dark outside, in fact, now raining, so should cool off shortly.

See everyone later.....

Our current temp is in the upper 80s now at 12:43 p.m.  Sarah got home right around 8 this morning.  She's now sleeping, goes on again tonight.  It is nice outside, and even nicer here in the house.  We have a fan on the wall, here by the computer, and it's actually making me want to find a sweater, or a long sleeve top to put on.  Such a nice change, from summers gone by!

Our Friday Fish Fry is now under way and on the serving station.  Fish choices range from catfish to talapia, and our side dishes range from cole slaw to mac & cheese.

And, of course, our usual desserts:  Yellow cake w/chocolate icing, pecan pie, and the usual cobblers (apple, blueberry, cherry and peach).

Tom, you all can keep the bear in N. Florence!  We get enough rabbits, squirrels and possums around our neighborhood, don't need any bears.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, and take care.

.....A gorgeous Friday morning here just outside of our fair city....Yard....flowers.....everything fresh.....and looking out over the fairway, just great.  Would be nice if this was the norm in all seasons...

Clear blue skies, with much lower humidity then we've been having, and earlier it started at 66 degrees.  Windows were opened last evening, first for quite a while.  Beautiful almost full moon looking down on us last evening.

Good Friday morning, everyone!  Feels rather nice outside, as we have a temp of 73 degrees, going for  high of 90 today.  Sarah should be back home in a few hours.  They were to be picked up at the motel around 5:30, for a 7:30 p.m. work start.  I know she'll be really tired when she does get home!

Larry, have a safe trip back home!!

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.

On the serving station this morning:  DOUGHNUTS AND DANISH:  regular plain cake and yeast doughnuts, chocolate covered cream filled long johns, chocolate covered vanilla filled doughnuts, cruellers (sp?), and the following danish:  raspberry, blueberry, peach, apple, along with some bear claws and a few bagels.  There's also some  bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, and hash browns.

And Mookie, here's your coffee cup (mug), ready to have your coffee poured into it.

I heard on the news about a bad storm up in Connecticut, and a pouring rain at the Phillys game last night.  They showed an amazing shot of the grounds crew trying to get the tarp down over the field.  The winds were really blowing.

Guess that's about all the news I have this morning.  Just glad that everyone is o.k., and yes, Justin, your pictures were very, very good.  Continue the good work, and everyone have a good morning and take care.

Thanks Cannonball for info on the hamfest. Without knowing the callsign being used and the frequency used, it will be next to impossible to find them except by blind luck. It is actually more complicated than most folks realize. FWIW, I haven't heard of a phone patch being used in years now. Modern technology has made it obsolete except for emergency purposes. Thanks anyway, and 73

Randy, you should have called before you left. You caught the heat at the peak of the season. They called for 99 today and I know it got at least to 97 and will stay like this until mid August or later.

Today's storm hasn't showed up yet. I hope it doesen't. Nothing to speak of on the wireless for the past few dqys, so have spent a lot of time on the computer and dreaming of a fountain pouring chocolate fudge! Gotta get back there!

Justin, nice pix. You're doing a great job.

Everyone take care

101 here at the son's place in MD today.  Not much less tomorrow, although a mild cold front (which didn't give us any bad weather, but did produce some warnings) will help tone it down a bit.

On the road tomorrow - up through Balto to Harrisburg then I81 home.  Looks to be much cooler up there.  My lawn may be a challenge, though.

You know it's gonna be an ugly day when the thermometer hits 90 before 9am......

Shot past Tom's hometown earlier today before turning the corner at I-20 and heading to Georgia, currently about 96 or so in Byron, next to Warner Robbins, mirror says 108, so A/C is on full bore.  Headed to Albany tomorrow, will see what we come out of there with.

Heard there was either high winds or a tornado in Eagle, WI, the other day, weather has been ugly up there lately.  Heat hard on the equipment as well, having to turn on the engine fan on hard pulls to keep the coolant below 200.

See everyone later....

Good luck Randy!

It's good to know everyone is o.k.  Since my knee surgery, I try my best to not be around lightning.  And when it is lightning, I make sure I don't have on my braces, as both are very good conductors, and I don't want to be struck by lightning!  Don't think that would do my heart any good, either.

For supper tonight, how about a semi-light Chinese night?

We have:  Fried rice (beef, pork, chicken, shrimp), chop suey, lo mein (beef &  pork), and pepper steak w/broccoli.

I think our high today was only in the mid 80s.  Was pretty cloudy most of the day, and we never did see any rain.  It went to the north of us, and to the south, southeast.  And right now, we have sunshine.

Everyone take care, and have a good evening.

Afternoon all.

John, I ponder the same question. I’m really enjoying myself. I love getting to spend time with the kids in our community.

Mom and I did some train watching together today. I got a decent shout of a Union Pacific SD70ACe. Sure was a nice day today. Had a good breeze. I got my new glasses today as well. I love them. Have a good evening all.

Here Union Pacific SD70ACe #8590 rolls into Lafayette with a short manafest. She has recived an approach signal at Lafayette Jct., and will recive a more restrictive "approach diverging" to enter the West Yard.

The catch of the day were these EJ&E steel coil cars headed to Chicago I assume.

Let me know what you think!

-Justin

Brian: One guy went to hospital for hearing loss & dizziness. The other guys said it was a little like sticking your finger on 110V only worse. Initial reports of severe injuries were false. They were lucky indeed.

Had a good time with the little ones - held the baby for about 2 hours last night as she napped.  Wonderful feeling.  Not gonna miss the whiny side of the two-year-old, though.  When she's good, she's great, but...

To quote A. A. Milne (perhaps not 100% accurately): "There was a little girl who had a curl, right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good, she was very, very good, but when she was bad she was horrid"? I am sure something like that could have been said of me.

Four leaders decided to hold down the big awning. Yep. It got hit by lightning. They are going to be OK.

How in the world did they survive that?  Must've been a cold bolt or a branch off of a bolt...

Today I had Vacation Bible School (VBS). I was made the official photographer of the event, which lasts all week, and I’m excited to be a part of glorifying the Lord our God to the younger children of our community.

It sounds as though you are having a wonderful week. I remember the Vacation Bible Schools I attended back when I was young. Our church (Presbyterian) did not have enough children to hold its own (we had one class with five children in it), so I attended the Methodist and Baptist schools.

Incidentally, one of the Methodist pastors, back in the late forties, was John Sandlin (this was in South Carolina). I wonder if he could be any kin to you.

No storms in MD last night, but the day was definitely "3H".

99 here at 1 pm.  And that's definitely in the shade.  At least it's not quite as humid.

Driving home tomorrow.  The gas mileage will probably be pretty bad, as I'm sure the A/C will be running most of the way.

Had a good time with the little ones - held the baby for about 2 hours last night as she napped.  Wonderful feeling.  Not gonna miss the whiny side of the two-year-old, though.  When she's good, she's great, but...

Most likely some folks here in Indiana did have more strong and some distructive weather overnight.  Most of it missed us {again}...Thankfully.

Rain gauge had .35" overnight.

Temps are about 10 degrees below what we had at comparable times yesterday.  Wanted to finish up shrub trimming with the cooler temps, but everything is so wet.....Not mixing that with an electric trimmer.  We'll catch it soon....Hopefully.

Did visit my barber this morning and don't have much left to deal with now....No bother either.

Item:  Just peeked over on Roanoke rail cam, and saw 3 movements in 5 min.....2 at once.  Hope it continues to work....It looked really nice {for weather}, there this morning.

Morning. Sounds like you folks in Ohio and Indiana had a memorable night. Our storm never came except for a non event that passed south of us. Presently 86 and sunny in Carolina, expected high of 99 and another thunderstorm later.

Paula, thanks for breakfast. Everyone take care and stay cool
