Hey Justin, if you think about all the people in this country who are killed by drunk drivers every day, our airlines have a VERY good safety record. I think that God knew what was going to happen with that NW flight on it's way into Detroit on Christmas day and he prevented it from happening. I would not worry about your Mom and your Grandmother, I am sure they are in good hands.

Morning CW, Cannonball,

Cannonball, Sorry to hear that the little guy didn’t make it. I will continue to pray for the family.

Also, I hope you all might say a little prayr for my Mom, and Grandma. They are flying to Florida today, and you all know what I think of the airlines, and there safety record.Dead I’m just so concerned about it. But I just keep telling myself… “It’s in God’s hands, and there is nothing I can do about it. “His will will be done the way he see’s fit.”

Have a good day all.

Justin

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  Cannonball, I'm very sorry to hear that.  I will continue praying for his family.

Well, we're getting light rain right now.  They say it did start right about 3 a.m., with thunder and lightning, but I never heard any thunder, or had lightning wake me up.  The rain is to begin tapering off, with some areas still seeing off and on chances of light rain or dizzle.  Then, this afternoon the   cold front comes rolling in.  Current temp's not too bad, 49 degrees, with our high occuring around noon, in the mid 50s,probably around 57 degrees.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are all freshly made and ready to go on the serving station, along with doughnuts, bagels, danish, bear claws, and there's pizzas left from last night (you can have it warm, or eat cold pizza, whichever you prefer).

Everyone enjoy your breakfast, be safe going to Church this morning, those of you who attend, and those of you going to work, or whatever you'll be doing, and take care, all of you.  See you all later, and if any of you have a request for Sunday Dinner, let me know.

I've missed even reading, if not making any response, to the posts on these threads since Monday, when I going into a hospital for some much-needed repair work on my G. I. tract until coming home today. Two weeks without driving, lifting, etc., now. We have no appointments next week, so we can say, "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" (we have had little in the valley, but the ski resorts are going well).

Murphy Siding
Why in the world, it chose to censor the common name for German cooked cabbage is beyond me.

So far , I have  caught up with Monday's and Tuesday's email, so I do not know if anyone has provided the common name for German cooked cabbage. Over the Lounge, Carl spoke of sauerkraut--which is not cooked, but raw shredded cabbage that is pickled in brine. My mother went to school at Banner Elk, N. C. (that was a cold place in the winter one hundred years ago), one year, and she spoke of helping in putting sauerkraut away.

I enjoy the many interchanges between the posters. Even though most of us have never met in person, we do have this friendship found in the common bond of railroading. May this never end.

The lads showed up and shoveled the driveway and there is melting occurring,

Mookie, tell Driver that Goldwater Lake is about four miles from my home. I know of no jokes so maybe he and I should have a personal conversation about this as it appears there is a story which would benefit me. The invitation is open and the Driver may bring his date.

Sun?  Shined all day here.  Wasn't all that warm, but it was sunny!

Got a project going, but then ran out of materials.  Trip to town is on the agenda tomorrow to pick up the rest of what I need.

Off to other forms of trouble.

Evening, all!  It's been a quiet day here at home.  Walt's been busy, getting his railroad storage closet back in order.  That's where some of the ductwork is for the furnace.  The ductwork comes up from the half cellar, where the furnace is located.

Sarah went to the Y, and had some other errands to take care of.  I've been catching up on my reading, one of the Christmas presents from Walt.

Here is the lineup for our Saturday Night Pizza Fest:

1.  Cheese w/extra cheese

2.  Goetta

3.  Hawaiian

4.  Pepperoni/mushroom

5.  Italian sausage

6.  Supreme

7.  Veggie

8.  Italian sausage calzones

Mookie, I understand your feelings toward Willy, I really do.  (And, if we get what they're predicting later next week, I just may join you.)

And speaking of this weird weather everyone's been having, I saw a picture in our morning paper, taken around Cannonball's neck of the woods in Arizona.  A little boy was washed away, and they were trying desparately to find him.  I certainly hope and pray that everything turns out all right, for him and his family.

Watched the last few minutes of the UK/Arizona basketball game.  Kentucky won!!!!  Seems like Coach Cal is doing something right, in his first season as Head Coach:  they haven't lost a game yet.  But, as things tend to go, I would imagine their first lost is just around the corner.  Even though I hope they make it to the NCAA tournament, and get farther than U of L!

Everyone have a good evening, enjoy your pizzas, and take care.

Mookie, you mentioned gold in one of your most recent posts. I once took a surface tour of the Homestake Mining Company's operation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The mines at Homestake have long since been shut down and there are some people who would like to turn the mine into an underground physics lab of some sort. I have a better idea. The Yates shaft is some 8 thousand feet in depth, and the Homestake mine could serve as sort of a final resting place for a lot of our corrupt politicians. Let's give them the shaft, in other words. Willie - you are treading - old weather terminology - on thin ice....May have to send you in 2 e-mails to Randy.

Diningcar - let's see - I will add AZ to my list of places to visit in retirement.  So far I have Illinois again, Kentucky, Ohio, New York, Colorado, Texas, Indiana, Kansas, & now Arizona.  (wonder if I forgot any....)

Driver wants to know if you live near Goldwater Lake?  He smiled when he said it, so I assume there is a private joke there somewhere.

Anyway - looks like this years income tax refund - If there is one - will go for puter for grandson.  Since I am his "sitter" this summer, looks like I won't get to work on my list....Sigh

I suppose he would travel all right.  He is 10 and the last outing we had together, we discussed expensive jewelry and gem stones.  Must learn to keep mouth shut so he doesn't see gold inlays....

Well, with all the weather reports I've read on here this morning, we seem to be doing rather well.  42 plus degrees now, heading into lower 50's as forecast for today.   No rain or snow.

So....For January, it's really not been too severe here.  Still quite a bit of time for it to behave badly though.....{Willy, you might put some snow fence up on the eastern Nebraska boarder}.

Looked around in Meijer's yesterday for some batteries for my new small Cannon Digital....Had studied on here what might be the better route to go with batteries and found what I wanted there.  Less costly too, than what I was finding on the internet.  Now have a package of the charger and 4 Ni-MH {AA} size.  They are also the {LSD}, low self discharge, and 2100mAh.

Manual indicates alkaline battieries will work for about 170 shots and the above type should handle about 370 shots.....and they are capable of holding 85% charge for up to a year....So, believe I did ok.

Overcast today here and I have an internet connected AM stereo radio station over in Ligonier, Pa. playing while I work the computer....and the sun is shining there.  I know their elevation is about roughly 1,200 to 1,300' and it sure can be nice there and not nice over the mountain in my "home area", east of there at 2,000' in elev.  Just 19 mi to the east on rt. 30.

We had more snow overnight in Prescott, AZ, Elevation 5500 +/- depending on if you are on the hills or downtown. Approximately 15-18 inches on the street in front of our home. Waiting for the plow which is operated by my friend so he may not fill my driveway as he passes. Temp. is moderate because of cloud cover but still waiting for shovelers to show up looking for work. I was going to give Ms dining car a new shovel for Christmas but better judgement prevailed and she is getting a trip to Paris instead. She and our youngest daughter leave on 2-6 from Seattle and will return on Valentines Day. I shall chase a few trains along the Transcon while they are gone assuming they get the snow cleared from I-40 and old Route 66.

Mookie, you do not want to be anywhere near Flagstaff right now as they have had more than three feet of snow with I-40 closed for the past two days. I think the BNSF Transcon is operating but not at its usual efficiency. Come in the summer and if you should be near Prescott I will buy the coffee, or whatever the occasion calls for

Sunshine and warm temperatures coming Sunday so melting will be occuring here and runoff in the creeks will cause some of the lessor roads to be closed.

As far as the weather goes, I don't think we should really blame Willy alone.  After all, he's just a student right now, and there are plenty of other, older, more expierienced meterologists out there for us all to put the blame on. Tongue  Let's share the blame with the rest of them, o.k? (I know, he's probably the only one who participates on this forum.)

Thank you CW! It's nice to see that someone can still be kind to the poor, harmless meteorologists of the world. We really are helpless in the face of such antagonism... RIGHT MOOKIE??

Good morning. We have 26 degrees here in Sioux Falls and the wind chill places us at 20 F. And it is raining here.

Sarah called me late last night, and I sure enjoyed my visit with her. We spent approximately 80 minutes on the phone. I have a trac phone which I purchased from Walmart and now I need to buy some additional minutes and get them downloaded into my phone before I leave for Wyoming next month. Fortunately I have a bunch of coupons on hand that will save me some $.

I hope the rest of you are all having a good day, and stay warm!

CNW 6000

Steak and eggs are the order of breakfast today.  Plenty of bacon, sausages, hash browns, and corned beef hash to go around.  Juices and the usual beverages are ready.  Have yet to see Willy's latest concoction up this way yet...supposed to be fun for the next 2 days.  We'll see.  Off to work to fill in.  OT here I come.

Good Saturday morning, everyone, and Hello Dan!  Thank you very much for fixing breakfast this morning.  You did a very, very good job:  steak, eggs, bacon, etc., sure does look and sound good this morning.  I can't make up my mind what I want to eat, it all looks so good.

As far as the weather goes, I don't think we should really blame Willy alone.  After all, he's just a student right now, and there are plenty of other, older, more expierienced meterologists out there for us all to put the blame on. Today is supposed to be a fairly good day around here, with a temp in the mid to upper 50s.  But we'll have to watch out for tomorrow, when the winds will be picking up, and we have rain/storms coming in tomorrow.  Then, we're supposed to get a rain/snow mix coming in sometime Monday.

Everyone have a great day, and I'll see you all back in here for our pizza fest tonight.

Note to self:  An ice storm, a 45,000lb beer load, and the mountains of western Virginia are not a good combination.....

But anyway, made it out alive and am headed back toward Wisconsin, hopefully will stay out of the slick stuff for a while (and anyone who believes that will buy Tennessee beachfront property).

Was rummaging around in the DVD section of the Pilot in Dupont, PA (by Scranton) last night, and came across a collection of Dragnet TV shows.  Being a fan of the Jack Webb series, bought it up and was watching them during downtime today.  Gotta admit, 55 years later, they are still great shows (I also like his radio series, which ran concurrently with the TV series).

Mookie, when you get done puttin' a whoopin' on Willy, can you send him my way?  I'd like to give him some "encouragement".  Thanks.

See everyone later.....  From Austinburg, OH

Got my errands done today.  One of the things I bought was a Wii.  Still can't find the balance board (a crucial part of "Wii Fit) - apparently they are having trouble keeping up with the demand.  But the console came with the sports package, so I've been playing some golf and even a little tennis.

'Bout time for the bedtime snack and bed.  Got some projects on tap for tomorrow.

Evening, all.  Sorry about being MIA all afternoon.  But, we've been busy getting things back in order, after getting the furnace in.  The guys did have to come back out today, to put the furnace on a different breaker.  They had to get one, so they came back today to put it in.  That was right about the time I was getting ready to come in here, to post the afternoon/evening menu.

Since it's so late, guess we'll forgo our regular Friday Fish Fry.  Instead, tonight you'll find on the serving station:  burgers, brats, fries (regular,  curly and cheese fries), along with garden salad.

Desserts tonight:  cake (chocolate w/chocolate icing, pineapple upside down cake, brownies w/nuts and chocolate icing, and ice cream, if anyone wants it on your cake  or brownie.

Cannonball, good to see you made it in, as well as dining car Jack.

We've been a little bit foggy around here weather-wise today, and will be foggy again tonight and in the morning.  But we're supposed to be in the low to mid 50s tomorrow, with breezy conditions.   Then really windy Sunday.  In the extended forecast, they're saying we could see some heavy rain, thundershowers, turning to a mix of rain/snow Monday, with flurries next Tuesday.

Guess that's about all the news I can think of for tonight.  Haven't been anywhere, so don't know a whole lot.  Everyone enjoy your supper, have a good evening, keep safe, stay warm and take care.  See you all in the morning.

7,000' elevation contributes to real Winter up there.....

I was with my parents at the time (and my 8 year old daughter) and I drove for awhile.  Finally had to hand it over to Dad - I would have never made it the rest of the way.  Instead he had me drive thru a blinding sandstorm from Needles to Barstow.  That was a thrill!

Diningcar:  They said it was snowing in Flagstaff the other day.  All I could think was - so?  I was there only once on my way to California and we had to stop and put chains on the tires to get thru the snow and ice.  That was a scarier situation than any we had here in Nebraska!

Cannonball lives about 30 miles from me but my elevation is perhaps 1000-1500 feet higher so more snow. But the temps have been in the thirties and Thursday we had rain falling on the accumulated snow. Light snow at this moment but not freezing (only in AZ).

The moisture is appreciated and the lower elevation dams will be filling as is the plan (which too frequently does not happen in this arid land). The heavy snow accumulation arourd Flagstaff and Williams will melt slowly and should renue the water in the dams later in the spring and summer.

Now I will clear my driveway, by hiring two young men at my door, so you all ahve a good day and I shall join you for lunch later.
