Good morning, and a belated happy birthday to Randy, along with an early happy birthday to Justin. Justin, I hope your celebration last night went well.

41 and rain in Carolina this morning an hour after sunrise. Good day for sleeping.

Paula and Ray, thanks for breakfast.

Everyone take care and stay warm and safe.

It looks like both CW and I were in the kitchen here at the same time and were completely unaware of each other's presence.

The sun is just now rising to the east of me in my hometown, and right now our temp here is 0.7 degrees. Our temperature here will probably max out at 7 degrees and not much warmer than that. I don't think I will be leaving my house at all today. It's a good day to catch up on a lot of reading.

RE: I-40:  Considering that it is 50mph for at least 20 miles through the gorge, with no passing allowed, trucks can stack up there in short order.

\

Randy.....That part of I-40 was certainly not my favorite part of the route to Florida for us....It always seemed to be so confining and with the high center concrete wall so claustrophobic running with 18 wheelers, etc....thru that curvy distance.  {and a tunnel}.....

We used that route {on our way south}, over from Knoxville on across I-40 and I-26, on over to Colmubia, S C, and then down Fed. route 321 to the south end of the state and over to I-95 across Georgia, and near Jacksonville, west over to Fed. route 301 and on down into Fl.

In our area this morning....we have overcast skies and very light rain but mod. temps.  And that beats cold and snow.

Looks like things have been real slow in here this afternoon.  Guess everyone is busy getting ready for Christmas, the work and school week ahead, etc.

Here is our Sunday Dinner Menu:

1.  Italian spaghetti w/meat sauce and little meat balls, garlic Texas toast or Italian bread, and garden salad.

2.  Chicken abracadbra w/potatoes & carrots, fresh baked cornbread and garden salad.

I haven't heard from Justin, as to his dessert preferences for today, but here is what I've come up with:

1.  Chocolate cake w/dark chocolate icing, with Happy Birthday Justin written on it.  We'll have to wait for him to get in here, so I know how many candles to put on the cake.

2.  Chocolate pie, cherry pie, and coconut cream pie, along with apple and cherry cobblers.

I hope everyone has had a really good day so far today, and that everyone is doing well.  Have a good evening and take care, all of you.

Good afternoon,

A belated happy birthday to Randy and a happy birthday to Justin also! Happy B-Day

Cloudy and cold today, but not as cold as tomorrow. High tomorrow only in the single digits above zero and a low tomorrow night below zero.

Finals are this week. I don't have any on Monday, and then one on Tuesday, one on Wednesday, and one on Thursday. Friday will be the official beginning of Christmas break for me. It can't come soon enough.

We go over the highest point on the interstate highway system east of the Mississippi, Sam's Gap, NC/TN, on Interstate 26.  At over 3700 feet elevation, it's the highest I have been on the highway, fairly pretty up there, too

Randy, you should try the Sam's Gap crossing on US 19W and 23, on a cold December night. When I left college for Christmas vacation in 1954, I caught a ride in Erwin with a Gypsy, who knew the road. We had no trouble until we approached Sam's Gap--where the drain from the spring on the mountain side of the road had frozen, and the road was iced over on the sb side. He was unable to get past an Allied truck that had stopped on the ice. My driver flagged a sb car and got me a ride into Asheville.

As you say, it is pretty country, and I always enjoyed the travel between Erwin and the east side of Hickory Nut Gap. It was slow hitchhiking though, it usually took me as long to cover the 90 or so miles from Asheville to Bristol as it did cover the 180 or so miles from home (south of Charlotte) to Asheville.

By the way, what took place on I-40 that requires so much work?

Hello all.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. CW, Thank you so much for the cake! If it’s not too late, and too much trouble, I would take some sugar cream pie for all of us. That has sounded good for a long time!

Been in Indianapolis today. Went out to eat for my birthday at Longhorn steakhouse. It was really good. Got to use Dad’s new GPS today. That thing is just so nifty!

Thanks again for the happy birthday wishes.

Good Monday morning, everyone.  I hope everyone had a good evening, and Justin, sounds like you had a really good time on your 14th birthday yesterday!

We currently have 48 degrees this morning.  They are saying we could reach 60 by around 3 p.m.  Then the temps will start dropping again, with rain coming back in.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for all our hot tea drinkers are ready to go.  On the breakfast warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, hash browns, biscuits & gravy.

I'm sorry I didn't make it back in here last night.  This cold is really getting me down.  From 5:30 on until about 8:30 last night, I was freezing.  Could not seem to get warmed up.  I had several layers of clothes on, even here in the house.  Walt was sweating, so guess it was just me.  So far, I'm feeling better this morning, and my hands are even warm, so I am able to type this morning, without hitting wrong keys.

Everyone have a good morning, enjoy your breakfast, and take care.

Good morning, it's Monday.... CW, I hope you feel better quickly. I had a bout of chills once, and by thr next day, it was over. Never had them again, so I hope the same for you. It's no fun to have something like that.

At present, 43 and fog in Carolina. I haven't seen the forecast for today, but it is probably going to stay cool. One of my juvenile delinquents got out of the yard yesterday and we had to chase her down in the rain. When I finally caught her, she spent most of the day in the lockup. I hope she learned something from that.

Thanks for breakfast, and I hope everybody has a great day. Stay safe and warm.

Thanks for fixing breakfast for the rest of us this morning, CW. While it may seem cold to you out there in Louisville, Kentucky, it is much colder here in South Dakota. Right now we have a temp of 0.3 degrees and a wind chill factor of roughly 16 below 0. The sun here has not yet appeared over the eastern horizen, but some sunlight would have a positive impact on my overall mood today.

I hope the rest of you out there all have a good day. Stay warm!

Morning--

A Happy Birthday to Justin---even if a bit late!! Hope you had a good one.

Got some freezing drizzle falling in some spots around here---but a lot better than yesterday---we spent yesterday taking Audrey to hospital after she found some black ice on Saturday morning during her morning walk. Discovered that while her ankle--which turned out to be sprained--was not broken --she did get a hairline crack in one of her metatarsels on her foot. Now she got a walking cast--to her AKA "mooring anchor".

Hope everyone has a good and safe day-----

Ouch!  Broken anything in your foot is no fun.  Been there.

Cold but clear here this AM, after rain (yes, rain) here yesterday afternoon.  No ice problems to speak of, though.

Looks like I missed a birthday or two over the weekend - hope everyone enjoyed their day!

Got the grandkids gifts on Saturday - now I just have to wrap them.  Moms and Dads say to spoil the little ones and nothing much for them, so gift cards notwithstanding, I still have to see if I can find something for them to open.

Fire department breakfast was not well attended, but we did turn a small profit.  Santa's visit garnered a visit from the local TV station, so we made the news last night.  Unfortunately, football wiped out the 6:00 edition, and the 11:00 broadcast was late (because of football), so I stayed up 'til 11:45 to see what they used.  It was pretty good, and I'm sure the families of the kids who appeared on-camera were recording...

Thanks Tom and others, for inquiring about my chills yesterday evening.  Right now, just feeling a little cool, no chattering teeth, etc.  Hopefully it was only a 12 hour thing, and I'm feeling much better.

For lunch and supper tonight, we have:  leftovers from yesterday, Italian spaghetti, and there's a little bit of the chicken abracadbra left also.

Sun is shining here this afternoon.  Guess I'll take the dog out in a little bit, and let her wonder around the yard, with me holding onto her leash.  And if I get energetic enough, maybe she and I will go for a short walk around the block.

Everyone enjoy your afternoon, your meal, and take care.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Looks like another slooooow night in here.  It's that time of year.  I hope everyone had a very good evening.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for hot tea are ready to go.  On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits & gravy, home fries.

We have a temp of 43 degrees this morning, and the temp will be slowly dropping throughout the day.  By 3 p.m., supposed to be down to 36, maybe 37 degrees.  So just colder temps coming back in, and they say we may see flurries on Saturday.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all after I get through with Tuesday Produce.

Good morning Paula. I am glad you are past your miseries and feeling better. I have been up all night chasing my Juvenile Delinquent again. She broke out of the yard and won't have anything to do with us. I have gotten close, but she takes off just out of reach. When I get her back inside, it's a long lockup in the critter cage for her.

Edit: Just as I wrote the above, she showed up at the door. When I let her in, she ran and hid, but justice is  still coming for Madamozle Blockhead!

At present, it is 57 right at sunrise, with 64 and rain predicted.

Everybody have a great day. Stay safe and warm and wish me well in finding the escape hatch.

Good afternoon, all.  After Produce this morning, I fell alseep, and just woke up a little bit ago.  Tom, like you song!  Hope you've managed to get the 'little one' out of hiding!

The produce truck brought ears of corn, potatoes, slaw mix, cabbage, lettuce and Idaho potatoes.  We had about 76 people show up today, some were new ones, who haven't been here before.

For our afternoon and evening meal, I'fixing:  Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and you have your choice of onion rings, fries, steak fries or curly fries, along with garden salad, and if anyone wants it, we also have vegetable beef soup w/homemade, baked cornbreadand grilled cheese sandwiches.

I'm not sure what our temp is down to, but you can definitely feel it's a lot cooler than our 60+ temps from yesterday!  As Tom said, everyone stay warm and take care and be safe this afternoon.

Good morning. Rather quiet in the diner again today.

We finally got someone to walk the fence and he found where the fraulein was getting out. She  spent about 8 hours in the lockup and now can go back in the yard since the hole is blocked with a concrete block. Now, I am gonna make up for some lost sleep. Everybody take care
