May have to cover up with the comforter tonight:  we're supposed to wake up tomorrow with a temp is the low 60s, should be around 63, 64 degrees in the morning.  Sounds like autumn is just around the corner.  Everyone take care, have a safe, good evening and take care.

It sounds as though you have the start of our weather at the first of this week. The local station tells us to expect 100 degrees tomorrow afternoon after we get down to the valley; two internet prognosticators tell us it will be much cooler. We shall see.

Justin, how is your father?

Evening all.

Well, what can I say good about today…… Well, I learned how to do (do better) on the order of operations. Well, for the most part school went well. But when I got home things took a sharp nosedive…Eight Ball

We got the new pane for my 2 week old window. (The first pain had a crack in the upper left corner.) We tried and tried to get the window apart to get the new pain in , about six times in fact, and we finally got te neo one in… Well just my luck the company (Pella) had sent us a replacement pain in the wrong size. So we removed the pain once more to put the old one in. Well we got it in, and then the top pain wouldn’t stay up… SMASH!!! The top pain fell and cracked all the way across. So now I have a new window with a nice line of blue tape across it. Sigh

Fish sounds good for supper CW! Thanks! Also, welcome to the newcomer! We and I are very glad to have a new member to socialize with.

It was an absolute gorgeous day today! The temps are perfect. Like Quinton said, will be an awesome weekend. A good one for rail fanning!

Have a good evening everyone!

Justin

Hello Gerhard, and Sign - Welcome to the Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner!  It's always very nice to meet someone from another country!  I hope you come in often, and enjoy the comeraderie (sp?) here.

Ray, thank you for bringing in the ice cream.  Sounds like my kind of treat (just about anything with chocolate is my fave)!

The warmer bar has been refreshed with more fish, fries, hush puppies, corn on the cob, mac & cheese, baked beans and fried mushrooms.  There's also cole slaw and garden salad in the cooler.

May have to cover up with the comforter tonight:  we're supposed to wake up tomorrow with a temp is the low 60s, should be around 63, 64 degrees in the morning.  Sounds like autumn is just around the corner.  Everyone take care, have a safe, good evening and take care.

Hi folks, I just got back from my neighborhood grocery store and I bought myself some ice cream. And rather than sit here and eat it all by myself I thought I would bring it in here and share it with all the other regulars. So we have here a half a gallon of Peanut Butter Fudge and a half a gallon of "Moose Tracks", Moose Tracks is a vanillia ice cream with chocolate fudge and Reece's Peanut Butter Cups swirled into it. Dig in and enjoy!! Tongue

Kiwigerd, Welcome Sign - Welcome from Louisville, Ky!!

I'm glad that we pay a few bucks a month also to our ISP, other than the charges, we haven't had to pay for our modems either.......which is semi good, as we're working on our third one in 6 years.

Joe, if they'd actually "paint" the Hash Marks on a couple of overpasses here, they might get painted in a couple of years, although the city wants the railroads to paint, and the railroads want the city to paint.

Took a fairly long walk around the neighborhood today to help exercise my knee that I "banged up" sort of badly on the 4th of this month, thought I might get to see a train or two and see what kind of work NS has been doing on the main through here........NADA; although I did get to see a hi-rail pickup go across one of the crossings....and the crew waved.Thumbs Up

Hi there,

fwiw, Central Europe right now enjoys a spree of good old style quiet summer days. No rain within the last couple of weeks, temperatures in comfort zone (for me this means around 60 at night and high 80ies during afternoons). A wave of thunderstorms were announced for an area of middle and southern Germay, Austria, Switzerland and Northern Italy, however none of those showed up yet. Maybe tomorrow. Traditional fish dinner (blue or red cod) gone, no sweets today as there was an ice cone this afternoon already.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Good afternoon, and welcome back to both Mookie and Ray.  Glad to see you both back.  Now, we just need to get some more of our missing friends back in here.  (You know who you are!)

Our regular Friday Fish Fry is now on the warmer bar.  We have cod, flounder, halibut, haddock, perch and salmon patties, along with all the regular side dishes to go with the fish.

And for dessert:  all the regular list of cobblers, yellow cake w/caramel icing, yellow cake with chocolate icing, along with pecan pie.

Laid back in my rocker/recliner for a few minutes to rest my eyes (been reading some good books), and promptly fell asleep for about a half hour, at most.  Thinking about lying back down and finishing that nap.

Everyone have a terrific afternoon, and take care.  See you all later on this afternoon.

I've been gone for a while and I thought I'd report in here. Right now in Sioux Falls we have a cloudy, overcast sky and we have a 30% chance of getting some precipitation this afternoon. A couple days ago here we had gotten a little better than 3/4 of an inch of rain. And the last I checked, we had a temp of 63.5 degrees here, that's almost jacket weather for me. And it's nice that I am not having to run central air conditioning in my house.

Less than a year ago I signed on with Mid-Continent Communications for broadband internet and telephone service, and I am not entirely happy with the service that I have been getting from them. I signed a one-year contract with Mid-Contintent and as soon as this contract expires, I think I will go back to Earthlink or Qwest for internet/phone service.

A beautiful morning here too....A few small wispy white clouds and sunshine.  Crisp mod. temps. and just a touch of breeze.  Dry overnight.  Should be able to keep windows open now for several days.

Maybe a stint of lawn mowing a bit later....The rain did enhance it a bit....

Jen, back a handful of months ago, we had to have a new {cable}, modem too.  Comcast has that duty as it is rented.  Several dollars a month.  Yes, I know, one can purchase one and get away from the renting, but I decided to let them handle it...Repair, replacement, etc....

Looks like our weekend will be pretty nice and into next week too....

So for many the issue of TGIF, have a good one.

Pshaw!  Only .34" of rain and no thunder.  Maybe Ma Nature will produce today.

The Toronto area, on the other hand, got a real surprise - one or more tornados.

Day off today, with an extensive to-do list.  Time to get to work.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  We may have gotten a little bit more rain overnight.  When I took the dog out this morning, the garden soil was very noticeably wet!  I didn't hear anything through the night, so it must not have been a very loud storm, if that's what we got overnight.  Right now, we have beautiful sunshine peaking out, and a temp of 70 degrees.  Looks like it's going to be a very gorgeous day around here.

Coffee, juices, lemonade, Gatorade, iced teas and hot water for hot tea are ready.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  muffins:  chocolate chip, blueberry, and oat bran, along with bagels, bear claws; there's also some cake and glazed doughnuts.

Justin, like Johnny said, learn all you can, and do not be afraid/leary of asking any of your teachers for help.  I should have done that myself, when I was in school, instead of being so shy and afraid I'd be considered a dumb idiot.  Fortunately, I did manage to learn some things, just wish I'd been better at a couple of subjects (math and science come to mind).

Everyone have a good morning, keep safe, and take care.

There - all my hatches are battened down.  Under a severe t-storm watch till one and the line looks like it's holding together pretty well, so we may get something more than a little rain and thunder out of it.

I'd go to bed, but that's just about a guarantee that we'll get called out for trees down or something....

School is going fine. I do like all of my teachers. Dad goes in for a colonoscopy tomorrow. (You know what they all say, the day before is the worst…)

Justin, you seem to be off to a good start this school year. Listen, ask for help when you need it, and learn all you can on your subjects.

I am sorry to hear that your dad needs a colonoscopy. I have had two, and the day before certainly was worse than the day of the examination. By now, your dad should be over the worst part of the ordeal. I hope his exam is in the morning, so he will not have to go a really long time without food. I wll be praying for him and all who attend him.

Quinton, I assume that the saver storms didn’t reach you… Boy are you lucky.

Yes, we lucked on the severe storm line last night Justin....It sure was red coming towards us but the angle it was traveling, it didn't arrive in our area until later and some of the afternoon heat had dissipated which lessened it's severity.  The red had changed to orange and almost yellow on the radar as it passed us.

Just a few dry leaves down in the lawn this morning and a total rain fall for the last 24 ended up being 2.1".....

Boy did we have a night last night. Quinton, I assume that the saver storms didn’t reach you… Boy are you lucky. About 6:00pm the fire scanner lit up like a Track Scamatic! An ACTUAL TORNADO narrowly missed us by a few miles. Only minor damage was reported thankfully. We really doged a bullet there.

CW, BBQ ribs sound delicious!Dinner

Well I will see you all later!

On today's menu for this afternoon and tonight:  Barbecued ribs  with baked potatoes, salad, fresh-from-the-garden corn on the cob, sliced red tomatoes, and yellow summer squash.

Well, we finally got some rain this morning.  Only a little bit:  Walt went outside and checked the rain guage, and it only had about three tenths of an inch.  But we do have the possibility of more rain this afternoon, tonight and in the morning.

Have a good afternoon, and I'll see you all later.

Finally....rain here.  In the last 20 hr's....2", that is the most we've had in one period in maybe 2 months.  We even escaped the storm part as the red line of weather passed late last evening.  Perhaps the lower heat helped dissipate some of the more severe stuff that was coming our way.

A few showers earlier this morning, but right now the sun is out...Possible scattered showers today but the main front is beyond us now.  Low 70's.

Work detail tonight to clean up our training center and memorial for our upcoming memorial service on September 11 - and scattered T-storms are in the forecast.  One will probably park right over the training center (which is on top of a hill - great for lightning, too) when we're supposed to be there...

Aside from a pressing need to mow the lawn, I don't care about Friday - I've got enough to do to keep me busy inside.

Saturday, however, I'm conductor.  Rain brings in the riders, but is tough on the crew.

For now, bearclaw and tea in the corner.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Yes, I'm a little bit more awake this morning (which is surprising, since I didn't go to bed until after midnight).  Still looking for the storms and rain showers to come into our area.  Today is the first day of the Kentucky State Fair, so the rain and storms probably will show up.

Coffee, juices, Gatorade, lemonade, iced teas and hot water for hot tea are ready.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws and BLTs.

Mookie, got your coffee mug cleaned up and ready to pour you a cup.  How about we meet out in the garden this morning, if you're not getting a downpour, that is.

Everyone have a very nice morning, watch the clouds if you're in the area for the showers/storms, heat, etc., and take care.

Quentin and Tree:

Along with towns growing up around the railroads, the opposite has happened several places out here where the locals got too greedy with taxes, etc and the railroad (and in one case the whole town) left.

Sure, I'm certain all kinds of things take place when communities and areas get too greedy with the taxes.

Quentin and Tree:

Along with towns growing up around the railroads, the opposite has happened several places out here where the locals got too greedy with taxes, etc and the railroad (and in one case the whole town) left.

Example #1: Bovina, CO to Genoa, CO (Bovina, 1886-1930, is now completely gone and the buildings left as well)  on Rock Island...

Example #2: Coolidge, KS to Syracuse, KS....Santa Fe moved their shops, buildings, everything 10 miles east to Syracuse after Coolidge went wild on taxes in 1890 (Coolidge now has less than two dozen folks, Syracuse was once the Western Division offices and HQ for Santa Fe. Its importance declined at the end of steam and the Syracuse (Western Div.), Las Vegas, NM (NM Division)and Pueblo(Colorado Division) Division Headquarters eventually consolidated at La Junta in 1962-64...

Example #3: Hugo, CO to Limon, CO on UP's old Kansas Pacific Line (more for logistical reasons)

Example #4: Ellis, KS to Oakley, KS on UP/KP for tax and logistical reasons (UP Mechanical Shops building is still at Elllis where Walter Chrysler got his start)

Example #5: El Moro, CO to Trinidad, CO (DRGW)

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

Quentin, I'm glad you all managed to get 1 1/2 inches of rain:  we still have gotten zilch this afternoon.  And it's looked several times like it was going to start pouring any minute.

10-4 on the rain Paula....we sure needed it but now, if the storms are minimum when the red line comes thru in the next hour or so, we'll be in good shape.

Supper menu tonight:  hamburgers, cheeseburgers, choice of fries, tater tots or onion rings, garden salad.  Dessert tonight:  homemade ice cream in the following flavors:  vanilla, strawberry, peach and chocolate.

Now, I think I'll go warm up our supper here at home.  Everyone have a great evening, stay as cool as possible, and take care.
