Johnny and Mookie:  I don't know about playing basketball.  Maybe, if I'm sitting on his shoulders.  But not  standingI don't have good enough coordination! But is does straighten my right foot, so maybe I can give a more accurate "swift kick" to anybody who needs it.WinkEvil  You all take care, and I'll see you all in the morning.

Nighty night, all/.

Mookie

Any one else flirting with 70-75 degree temps this weekend?  I have my windows and doors open!  78 right now.  Lovin' it.

Yes, we are after this afternoon rain....but....the house remains closed up and A/C working because of the high humidity...Really muggy outside....with fog this evening.

We're to have another possibility of rain tomorrow afternoon, and then a front passes and clears for dry weather and cooler for about 4 days....but back to about 80 by Wed.

Probably only if she stands on Mutt's shoulders, however she will make a good baseball catcher (low to the ground)

I thought CW would be playing guard; you don't have to be tall to play that position (just able to jump). I am sure you remember when women's basketball teams had six players with three at each end of the court. Now, there are five, and all play from one end to the other.

I go this morning, to get my new brace:  the ankle/arch support brace is finally in.

It seems to have been a long time since the brace was ordered. Will you be able to play basketball once you start wearing it?Smile

Calculus will be difficult. I'm not bad at math, but I do always need to give it some extra attention, or else I won't do as well. So far, I'm having trouble getting used to the Calculus professor's teaching style, which is not going to benefit me.

Yet, you should do better than I did with calculus. I started it in summer school after my first year, and finished it after the cut-off date for completing incomplete work in the fall semester. I was working on the college Building and Ground Crew from seven to six Monday through Friday, and from seven to noon on Saturday. There was no other student in the class, and I studied by myself at night; when I thought I was ready for a test, I told my professor. He left the college at the end of summer school, and his replacement caried me through to the end. As the cut-off date approached, I asked the Dean of Students for an extension, which he immediately gave me, saying that he knew what my summer schedule had been.

Okay, I managed to make it back, mainly because they picked me up an hour and a half early!  Fortunately, when I got to the Orthotics & prosthetics Center, they could go ahead and take me early.  I have the new ankle/arch support brace, and for this week, wear it for a half hour at a time, with a two hour wait inbetween.  Next week, I'll increase the wear time to an hour, with a two hour wait inbetween.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now on the warmer bar.  Selection of fish include:  cod, haddock, halibut, flounder, perch, shrimp, and crab cakes.

Side dishes:  baked beans, cole slaw, fries, hush puppies, macaroni & cheese, fried mushrooms, corn on the cob.

Deserts:  apple, blueberry, cherry and peach cobbler; chocolate pie, pecan pie, yellow cake w/chocolate icing and white cake w/coconut icing.

Now, I'm going to go take a short walk, and come home to probably take a nap.   Everyone enjoy your meal, have a very good afternoon, and take care.

Good morning, and thanks for breakfast. 75 degrees and clear (I think) before sunrise in Carolina, headed for 89 and, as usual, more thunder. The forecasts for the past few days have called for thunder, but they have either gone around or fizzled out before getting here. Paula, I hope all goes well with the new brace and it fits well and comfortably. With all the antennas I have, any missed or fizzled thunderstorm is a blessing. Everybody take care,

Tom

Good Friday morning, everyone.  Willy, it's very good to see you in here!  It sounds like you're really enjoying your first few days in college!  Sounds like you're going to be very, very busy.  Just don't forget your friends on here, and come in to see us whenever you can, to give us all an update on how things are going.Thumbs Up

We currently have 70 degrees at 6:14 a.m., and going for a high of 85, with t-showers/storms coming in later on this afternoon, bringing in cooler air for overnight.  Our projected highs for about the next week are to be in the low 70s.

Coffee, juices, lemonade, iced teas are freshly made, and there's plenty of hot water for hot tea or cocoa.

Doughnuts, danish, muffins, bagels and bear claws are on the brekfast bar.

Hopefully, I'll be back in time to do the lunch time version of our Friday Fish Fry.  I go this morning, to get my new brace:  the ankle/arch support brace is finally in.  Hopefully, if I'm not back in here by about 11:30, 12:00, one of you can take over, and start the fish in the fryers.  The side dishes and desserts are already prepared, and in the fridge, ready to heat up and put out on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a great morning, and I'll see you all later on.

Willy - Sounds like you're off to a good start.

I'm going back to bed.  It's 1:15 AM and I just got back from my second run of the night.  First was medical, this one was a young lad who rolled his car.  Fortunately he wasn't hurt badly and will ride home with mom and dad.  His car, on the other hand...

Getting settled with college here. I've determined that Atmospheric Sciences will probably be my favorite class, which should come as no surprise. The professor for that class is friendly and funny, which are positive points right off the start. Plus, the content of the course is right up my alley. I'm also taking an Atmospheric Sciences Lab which will meet on Tuesday each week, starting next week.

My professor for Rhetoric and Composition was my 8th grade Literature teacher. This class will involve a lot of writing, but I actually find writing to be rather enjoyable.

I'm taking a one credit hour course titled Exploring the Frontiers of Physics. This will involve reading about certain aspects of Physics and then discussing the reading with my professor and classmates. No math involved, but there will be a few short papers over the course of the semester. Again, this professor is quite friendly and the class should be pretty simple.

Theology promises to be pretty interesting. Like the others, this course will involve writing several papers throughout the course of the semester.

Calculus will be difficult. I'm not bad at math, but I do always need to give it some extra attention, or else I won't do as well. So far, I'm having trouble getting used to the Calculus professor's teaching style, which is not going to benefit me.

I'm living off campus, which should be useful in most aspects (good food, no noisy roommate, etc). However, finding a place to park each morning has been difficult.

That's my first semester at Creighton University in a nutshell. I think I'll like it for the most part. I need to make some room for train watching though!

I have replenished the warmer bar with fresh off the grill burgers, brats, etc., along with plenty more of the orange chicken and all the side dishes.

Everyone enjoy, have a great evening, and take care.  Have been hearing thunder for for the last 40 minutes, but so far, haven't seen any rain.

Key lime pie--I had a good one back in February of 1970. I had been to a meeting in Hialeah, Florida (by rail, of course); the people with whom I stayed had a lime tree and they gave me a bagful to take home. I commented on the gift to the proprietress of the cafe where I often ate (I was still single, and my money almost jingled), and she told me to bring them in so she could make me a pie (no, she was old enough to be my mother).

Kiwigerd
  • 5 pounds red potatoes
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups mayonnaise
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 3 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add potatoes, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until tender but still firm. Drain, cool and cut into cubes.

Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.

In a large bowl, combine chopped potatoes and eggs. Mix together mayonnaise, chopped onion, green onion, green pepper, and celery. Season with salt and pepper, then mix well. Cover, and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Gerd, my mother's recipe is similar; but here is her recipe, that I always use:

12 to 14 medium red potatoes

2 hard boiled eggs

8 to 10 pickles (I now just use sweet pickle relish, since I no longer have access to home-canned sweet pickles)

2 to 3 Tbsp mustard

4 to 5 Tbsp Miracle Whip salad dressing or mayonaise

2 tsp celery seed

Salt to taste

Cook potatoes until done (still firm, not getting mushy).  Boil the eggs.  Cool potatoes & eggs.

Dice potatoes and eggs.  Add remaining ingredients and mix well.

Sprinkle paprika over top of potato salad.  Chill until ready to serve.

I will eat potato salad made with other potatoes, but the red potatoes seem to give the salad a better taste.

Panda cage?? What's that all about??! It reminds me of a story I'd heard a long time ago.........

One morning the three bears were sitting at their breakfast table, eating their porridge. When all of a sudden, this third bear comes barging into the house, he didn't even bother with knocking on the door. He sits down at the breakfast table and he grabs Papa Bear's porrige and he snarffed it down. Then he grabs Mama Bear's porridge and he snarffed it down. Then he grabs Baby Bear's porridge and he snarffed it down. Then he pulls a pistol, points it toward the ceiling and pulls the trigger........BANG!!!! Then this uninvited bear gets up from the breakfast table and walks out of the house.

After a moment of stunned silence, Baby Bear looked at Papa Bear and said, "Papa, what was that?!" Papa Bear responds by saying, "That was a Panda." Baby Bear then looks at Papa Bear and says, "Well, what is a Panda?" Papa Bear then says to Baby Bear, "There's a dictionary on the shelf behind you, son, look it up." Baby Bear reaches for the dictionary and proceeds to look up the word "Panda". Papa Bear says to him, "What does it say about the Panda?" And the following is Baby Bear's response......."A marsupial indigenous to the rain forests of northern China. It eats, shoots and leaves." (eats chutes and leaves)

Mom (and thus I) generally uses plain old spuds (as opposed to red potatoes).  Peeled after cooking.

She also usually uses Miracle Whip, about which people tend to hold pretty strong opinions on, for or against.

I've been known to include some hot/brown mustard for a bit of zip.  Don't recall if I saw radishes listed in Gerds version, but they're good in season, too.

Our local convenience store adds bacon to theirs - a tasty modification.

About the best potato salad I've had (other than Mom's, of course) was at a casino in Las Vegas where I was attending a conference.  It was made with red potatoes, but I don't recall what else was in it, and the key would be the "sauce" they used anyhow.

Regardless - I rarely turn down potato salad if it's offered...

Lovely day to all!

Curious question to CW: if you say American potato salad, are these your ingredients?

  • 5 pounds red potatoes
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups mayonnaise
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 3 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  •

Is it this?  Very tasty, mmmh. Yummy, so to speak!!

I'll now give you a recipe for traditional Vienna potato salad. You need

1 kg potatos, 1 red onion, a little white vinegar, some oil, salt, pepper (if you use onion salt you will want to add a baby spoon ful of white sugar too).

Don't cook the potatoes too long, they should still be firm, after cooling cut them into slices.
Add small onion pieces. Mix a marinade by using vinegar, oil, salt, (sugar) and pepper and pour it over the salad. Stir a little (cautious so as not to brake the potatoes) and let it rest for an hour or two before serving (normal room temperature, no special cooling). This will do for 4 servings.

Very hot here again, 92 today, forecast 94 for tomorrow and then some rain for the weekend and much cooler.

Have a nice day and good appetite,

    Gerd

Mookie is fresh out of suggestions for just about anything.  However, I do enjoy chicken/apple/pecan salads or sandwiches, club sandwiches, and chicken oriental salad. Use some home grown tomatoes for the chicken/apple/pecan salad.  Yum!  I have some homegrown cucumbers - no decorations needed, just eat them raw and then have a funny smile all the rest of the day.

And while I really am not a big chicken fan - orange chicken for supper is always good - like they make at or used to make at Applebees.  It has gotten so expensive, we rarely go there any more so don't know if they still have that or not.

Another favorite that I haven't had for years is gazpacho!  On a hot day, that is so good.  Maybe key lime pie to go with it?

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Hope you all had a very good night, and will have a very good day today.  We're currently have a temp of 72 degrees, going for 89 again today, with plenty of hazy, hot and humid conditions.

Lance (Railfan1), Sign - Welcome back!

Coffee, juices, iced teas, lemonade and hot water for tea are all freshly made, and the tea and lemonade are in the fridge and some in the cooler.

Breakfast this morning:  bagels, bear claws, and a big breakfast of sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy.  (yeah, I woke up very hungry this morning).

Mookie, how about a stroll around the garden to the rockers and other lawn chairs, for a cup/mug of coffee?

Everyone have a good morning, keep as cool as possible today, and take care.  OH!  Does anyone have any requests for lunch and supper today?  If so, please let me know.
