Okay, it's Thursday morning. Good Morning everyone!! For Breakfast this morning,
I'll make biscuits, gravy, bacon, and we'll have cantaloupe slices. Nice summertime
breakfast. That'll keep our tummies going till dinnertime (lunch time for you folks
up north).

Temps are the same around here, and were yesterday too. I was actually getting cold there for a while, as my Mom had the windows open.

How about something different to eat: how about some open-faced roast beef
sandwiches with mashed potatoes and brown gravy? Plus the regular side
dishes of veggies? Sounds good to me. [:D] [angel]

I agree, I'll take one of those for lunch. My Dad and I are leaving for Chicago this afternoon, so I'll take one more meal from the shop before we leave.

I dropped into your coffee shop this morning for the first time. Those tastee-creme do-nots were much too sweet. Is that one of the reasons that Tastee-Creme stock market shares have started to bottom out and and the company is having trouble. You folks down there need some Canadian world famous Tim Horton donut shops to make you appreciate what a donut should taste like ............Q. What's the difference between a canoe and a Canadian A. A canoe tips.

Well, kind of got drenched today. We're getting hit with part of tropical storm Bonnie. Florida is going to get hit with Hurricane Charlie, rated as an F3. Not the best weather for the East Coast. Amtrak has canceled all East Coast traffic both Friday, and Saturday.
[:)]That means my uncle won't have to work![:)]

For those who have noticed a lack of postings, I've been on a long trip by car to Port Hedland (where I still am). It was a 9000 km drive, (Imagine driving from Washington DC to Seattle WA via Jacksonville FL and San Diego CA - it was not far off the shortest route, either!)

Anyway, since my last visit, a new siding has been built, the second one out from the port on the Newman line, named "Mooka"!

Sorry about the spelling error!

Peter---

Good to have you back, mate. But why did you subject yourself to 9000 km worth of car??? Bet you're stiff from that ride![xx(]

For us Yanks, what does that line carry?

Sorry Guys,

The line brings Iron Ore in from a number of mines about 300 to 400 km to the south. Trains run in blocks of 100 cars, each carrying up to 140 metric tons of ore. Trains usually run in sets of two or three, with the second and third sets of locomotives operating under remote control. So a big train can be 45000 tons all up, and more than two miles long.

Each rake usually has two GE Dash8 units, a Dash 8 and two SD40s or an AC6000 and an SD40. There are eight AC6000s, forty Dash 8s and twenty SD40s.

The SD40s are rebuilt units ex UP or mainly ex SP, showing signs of SP's strange headlights. The last six were unloaded from the ship last weekend. They were rebuilt by GE in Mexico. The paintwork is really impressive, and you wouldn't believe the locos were nearly 40 years old (built before the line here was laid in 1968).

They seem to run well, but there are some problems with overheating. It can be 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day now (in winter) and it gets hotter in summer.

We believe thirteen SD70ACes will come soon, the SD40s just being a stop gap to meet new Chinese orders for ore.

I didn't answer the "WHY' did I?

I drove because I had the time, and there were a lot of railways along the way to be checked out, some of which are isolated systems with odd equipment.

I wouldn't say it was worth it, but the driving wasn't that bad. That's what air conditioning and cruise control are for. There are no major roads like the US Interstates, except for part of the first leg south, so it is all on relatively narrow but interesting roads, so it doesn't get boring.

I have flown this route dozens of times, and I always wanted to drive at least once!

Mooka has a nice ring to it. Rather like it myself.

And if Mookie was reading the map, you probably would have gone to Florida to get to
Seattle.

You are right - that is a big train - and the tonnage must be off the end of the paper!

Ahhh, Friday morning has arrived!

Since it's kind of cool here this morning, let's have:

brown sugar flavored oatmeal and toast this morning. Along with plenty of coffee for
us coffee drinkers. And of course, there's the usual breakfast items available as
well. [angel]

Mookie, we'll fix you something else for breakfast. Locomutt says how about some
pablem? (not sure how to spell it, but you get the meaning, I hope) .

And Joe, sure you can have some cinnamon raisin toast. [angel]

Rainy and cool here in WV- keeping an eye to the south for rain/flooding. I see where Amtrak canned a ton of trains today account Charley.

Chicken or fish for dinner this p.m. - haven't decided yet. Have a good weekend, and to our friends in Florida; hope you come through all of this O.K.

work safe

Right you are, coalminer3. Think I might open a can of tuna and eat it, maybe along
with some cantaloupe.

And locomutt and I are praying for the Floridians. He has a cousin who lives just
west or northwest of Tampa. Am really concerned for them, and for all the others
in Charley's path.

Since I made my last post, we have received email from Walt's cousin. So they are
safe and sound, apparently. Thank Heaven for that. She didn't go into any detail, just
forwarded an email to each of us just after 4 p.m. our time.

Mikeygaw, have you heard anything from her, and are she and her brother safe?
I will remember them and all the people in Florida in my prayers tonight.

Well, I'm finally getting to the diner today, and it's almost one o'clock! Where in the
heck is everybody? Guess everyone's out enjoying this beautiful weather. But
someone needs to be in here to wait on customers who do come in. And the train
layout isn't even turned on!! HORRORS: we can't have that in the Depot Diner and
Coffee Shop.

Okay, since no one's been in yet today to get everything going, the coffee is now on,
and we'll just skip the breakfast items.

Dinner (lunch) menu"

hamburgers
hotdogs
barbeque
sloppy joes
potato chips
2 alarm chili (hot sauce available)
and of course, all the desserts
