Random thought from an aimless mind -

You've all seen those ball things that people have on their desks:

Just how big could one of these be made and still work like the desktop model?

Back off the "alternate universe" of Amtrak trains. Got in about 3.5 hours late yesterday, no big thing, I'm not in a hurry. All the usual suspects, equipment late getting into Chicago due to repairs needed in Washington the previous day, Freight trafic, track work, freight traffic, CSX imposed heat restrictions, Freight traffic. As always, met a nice group of folks. Right at the top was a gentleman anybody would have pegged as being newly retired, maybe in his mid-60s, with a really sharp mind. He was returning home after spending 5 days playing in a bridge tournement in St Louis. Yesterday we helped him celebrate his 90th birthday. Had his drivers license to prove it. Kind of made up for the women, obviously ill, who would give anybody her conspiricy stories (the FBI was shut down three years ago) willing to listen for a minute. When no one was around her, she just carried on the conversation, I guess, with any "voices" she heard. Some of her comments were just hilarious, and would have been great for laughs if wasn't such an unfortunate situation. Nice about train rides, there is always time to have visit with fellow passengers and find out about people from all walks, including a fellow railfan, Trains Magazine reader of course, with my interest in the "business" of railroading.

As you may know, August is pretty much vacation month in Washington, and just about anybody able to will get out of town to beat the Potomac Valley heat and humidity. (Smarter people go north). Picked up the rental at WUS at 4pm and fully expecting to take up to 2 hours to get the 30 miles to Columbia. Guess what? No Traffic!! Nice of everybody to leave town and make room for me.

Mia is not quite old enough to venture out of the house and it may be a couple of more weeks before her Mom will let me take her down to the Depot to watch trains.

Oh yes, the second Cincinnati grandchild is arriving today! That is three all together, and I have a new goal in life. At least one of the three is going to become a rail fan. If I am having some difficulty with the girls, in about ten years or so I will see if Joe's Matt will give me a hand. I pretty sure that will work.

Everybody stay cool, have a good day, and we'll see you on the forum.

I feel your pain, Jay--I haven't been allowed to take my granddaughter out train-watching yet, either.

I can also identify with the passengers. I'm more of a "keep-to-myself" type, but had to endure one female who was the bar's last and first (and most frequent) customer. She was ending a relationship--I can't imagine!

Well suprisingly I'm in here at 2 :06pm Eastern Standard Time. Usually I would be at work during this time. However, I decided to take off wasn't feeling to well. I sure didn't want to work in 100 something degree weather today (it's about 90 degrres here but, in a hot cender block building w/o no AC or shade it tends to get really hott!), while my stomach is acting up, thats for the birds!!

The next two days here it's suposed to get up to about 86 degrees at the highest. So the weekend looks pretty promising, so far. I'm thinking about doing some railfaning tomorrow. Well tonight I have to get my hair done and I was suposed to go to the gym but, I don't know if thats going to happen unless I really start to feel better.

Mutt, I wonder about some of these sodas that no one has heard of sometimes. lol

(yawn) Mornin' all...... Just a little earlier than usual.

Beautiful day yesterday, after work, decided to go out for a fish fry, wound up watching the Green Bay/Buffalo scrimmage on the TV at the bar. I don't know if I'm ready for football season yet.....

Next week I get to switch to second shift 3:30pm to 2am. Not only that, but the plant is switching over, becoming more automated. They are going from four lines to two, and are still going to have the same capacity of about 20-30 trailers per shift.

CW, I think a plate of the usual Saturday breakfast/brunch items are in order, with a tall glass of apple juice. Thanks much, I appreciate it.

I was up at the crack of dawn myself. Snuck in the diner and helped myself to fresh coffee, a Danish and the Washington Post. A forum lurker must have been in early and got the set-up work done. CW can sleep in for a bit. (Left the 35 cents for the paper next to the cash register).

Cooler temps for the DC area today. Pool party and BBQ on tap for the afternoon.

For those who do the "9 to 5", enjoy the day off-everybody else enjoy the day.

Jay, I always leave some things in the cooler; don't actually "lurk", but I'm
usually "hiding" somewhere around here, doing one thing or another.
(Notice the layouts don't have any dust on them?!)

Saturday breakfast/brunch is all the regular items on the breakfast menu.
I'll be serving that until about this time tomorrow. (In the DD & CS, you
can get breakfast 24/7/365!)[C=:-)][dinner]

My cat just ate my donut. I left a few donuts in the box and found it missing. I asked my folks if they ate it and they said no. I found the cat licking her lips and left donut crumbs underneath the livingroom table.

If it wasn't so funny I would get upset. I just hope it doesn't upset her stomach.

Wow no one stoped in this moring for breakfast??// Interesting...... I think I stoped in to late tonight because according to my Eastern Standard time clock it's morring already!!

Well I went to see the movie Stealth earlier today. I thought that was a very good movie so for all of you out there that like fighter poilot movies watch this one!! Then I went railfaning since I was in the neighboorhood. I saw one mainfest train come through on NS mainline trackage into Abrams Yard in Valley Forge, PA. That was pretty cool, in that consist I saw a whole bunch of EJ&E gons and one lonly Chessie System gon w/ B&O reporting marks. I also saw a really beat up, complete with windows broken UP standard cab Dash-840C. I also ran into a signal that I think means Limited Approach but am not sure. The aspect was solid red over flashing yellow. Help Please?//////?????

Later on today I have to go to a softball game yet again. My team made it to the playoffs and I get to be catcher in a double header, tomorrow just like two weeks ago. I hope we win!!!

Well nite nite for now.....

Sarah, is there by chance a scrapper of freight cars anywhere around there? I suspect that those EJ&E gons and the B&O gon are smaller 52-footers (less inside height than the modern cars) that have become more or less obsolete (and possibly close to their age limit besides!).

As for the signal, you're close--it's a Medium Approach. Logic would suggest that it would be a Limited Approach (after all, a red-over-flashing-green is Limited Clear), but the operative word is "Approach", which requires trains to proceed at medium speed (less than limited speed), prepared to stop at the next signal. AMG

Sorry to miss out on breakfast, lunch, and dinner here today. Road trip--to reunion of wife's extended family, held near Kalamazoo. We ate too well from all of the assorted picnic goodies that everyone brought.

I brought my bike along, and broke away for a 24-mile sunburn...I mean, bike ride to check out CN action in Vicksburg and Schoolcraft. Four freights in a little more than an hour within sight of the tracks (I wish I'd been closer in most cases). CN, I'm glad to report, has done some track work in this area--fresh welded rail on the curve at Schoolcraft, grade crossing upgrades. Much more needs to be done, though.
