Brian-Don't know for sure. It was in Vilas County near Manitowish Waters. I suspect that you have the snow issue correct. Until the current "thaw" started, we had a foot of very powdery snow. Definately slows the lake freezing process.

I will vouch for the ice not being safe up here, in spite of the cold weather last month. They mentioned last night on the local news that a car went through the ice on Prior Lake, which is where I'm currently posting from (the town, that is- still up here in Minnesota, heading home today). I suspect that the snow covering the ice insulated it from the cold, so it never had a chance to get thick enough to support heavy vehicles, and in some places even light vehicles like snowmobiles.

Our condolences from here, Jay. Do you know which lake they were on?

Jay - Sorry about the loss. Unfortunately it seems to be all too common this time of year, and even old-timers are not immune from it.

We had a retired state trooper lose a car through the ice on the St Lawrence a couple of years ago - fortunately he survived, but still faced fines of up to $1500 a day while the car was under water...

Good morning, everyone! Hope all have a good day today. I get a break this
week: No Produce Day today, as the Community Center is closed this week.

Coffee and juice are ready, as well as hot chocolate/cocoa.

Breakfast this morning, pancakes and waffles with turkey bacon and sausage.
If you don't want pancakes or waffles, there is the standard sausage with
biscuits and gravy, or hot oatmeal or cream of wheat with toast.

Tomorrow...oops, later today, we'll finally have all seven of my family (me, wife, two daughters, two sons-in-law, and one granddaughter) together for a belated Christmas celebration. It's granddaughter Katelyn's first birthday, but they aren't celebrating that yet. Her birthday party will be on Friday--and I can't go 'cause I have to work.

Jay, I'm so sorry to hear about your neighbors.

We had a quiet, but nice Christmas Day. Just my wife's mother and my son in for the day. We will catch up with the rest of the family next weekend in Cincinnati. Not unusual for our familys. There have been times when our Christmas has been spread out over three or four weeks, though I guess it could be said that we are all together in spirit.

Just recieved some sad news this afternoon. Yesterday a neighbor and friend, Mark and his son Robert snowmobiling on a lake in Northern WI broke through the ice and drowned. Leaves behind his wife, a daughter and three step children. Very special family. Mark, who was deaf, taught at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf here in Delavan. His wife, who isn't hearing impaired also is a teacher at the school. Robert was adopted by them. Robert was deaf and also had a severe learning disability. Just very unfortunate.

I fell your pain here. I know what it is like to have to do papers and other school work durring the Christmas holiday. Last year I had to finish writing my 30 page Senior Thesis paper on Advanced Locomotive Technology. That paper was a nightmare, and I really had a tuff time writing it, I got a C on it. Though I was a little bit ticked off at that considering how hard I worked, and how many sources I had to site as well as writing a works consulted page. On top of that paper last year I had to write a formal physics lab for Uniform Acceleration, for my A.P. Physics class, I did get a B on that one, so I was happy about that. Man... I'm glad I'm out of high school, but college isn't any better. lol

I hope everyon's Christmas was very nice, loving one. I also hope some people went to church too. Now, we have to look forward to New Year!! I can't wait for that one really!! 2006, yes!!!!

Joe, thank you for getting the coffee and juice ready this morning, and
for putting out the cereal.

We have been on the phone with our ISP for over an hour, close to two
hours, because we can't get into our email. Trouble with the webmail.
Hopefully, we'll be able to check emails sometime today.[V][:(!] So, if
anyone has sent us an email and looking for a reply, PLEASE bear
with us. We'll get to it as soon as we can access our emails.

That repeated beeping you heard was not the smoke alarm - it was my pager with FOUR (count 'em) calls today (we don't get that many some months). Of course that meant I had to shut off the oven and try to recover when I got back. Twice. First two calls were back to back, so I never even got home. Three medical calls and one "good intent" - a beeping of some sort in a vacant mobile home.

Finally got my fill (and then some). Even put together a little 'plate' for the pup, although she now expects more..... The apple pie, with some 4X cheddar on the side, was delicious as well...

Our white Christmas is slowly being washed away - a tenth of an inch of rain so far this afternoon and evening.

Jim, it sounds like we have the same employer! [;)]

I have today off, tomorrow on, Tuesday and Wednesday off, and missed the chance to go to Michigan because we had to work Saturday, with today and tomorrow being the official holidays.

The rest of the family returned just before dark, so I'm in a bit cheerier mood. And somebody here gifted me with something very delightful!

Hello All and Merry Christmas

My employeer is celebrating Christmas Eve today and Christmas Day tomorrow. Yeah, I know, that is sooo stupid but what can I say. I am off today BUT have to work tomorrow and then off my normal rest days of Tuesday and Wednesday. So they really screwed up my plans to go to Missouri and visit my parents this Christmas. [:(!] [:(] [:(!] Jim is not a happy camper. No family, no friends, no super good food, just me and the dog and my lousy cooking. Actually it was a Banquet frozen Broccoli and Chicken and Cheese (with rice) dish and baked potatoes. So if you had turkey or ham I am sooooo jealous. [}:)] I am going to bake a white cake later today. Right now I have dishes in the dishwasher washing, and clothes in the clothes washer washing. [B)] Some Christmas huh? Then there is the kitchen floor that need sweeping and mopping. [V] Are we having fun yet? [:(!]

Well, I hope everyone else is having a good Christmas complete with family, friends, good food, and fun.

Our weather today is in the mid 50s, partly sunny, and some wind. However, very few trains are running today. I have heard only one on the mainline. So it is not a day to go railfanning. [:(]

Well talk to yall later.

My wife and I got to sleep in this morning, our son arrived home safely from his week long trip to Iowa, my 85 year old Dad sounded much better when I spoke with him this morning, my Mom was in a cheerful mood, our dog is recovering nicely from her surgery a week ago and we have plenty of good food (thanks honey!), a warm dry house to live in...what more could we want other than true peace, prosperity and understanding worldwide for many years to com
