we have a downy woodpecker that is king of the feeders. he pushes everyone away while he eats.even the squirrels dont mess with him.

....Another FEMA train with dozens of house trailers...{about the size of a large vacation unit...}, headed south through Muncie this morning...I suppose still destined for the Delta south...I sure hope they are getting to the people down there that need them.....Sure has been vast numbers of them travel through here in the last several months....

Tree: I gave up indoor pets for a variety of outdoor livestock - squirrels, birds, rabbits. They don't track up the kitchen floor, but I feel like meals on wheels and the garbage lady (m-t corn cobs, peanut shells!)

Of all the birds that show up at my feeders (which I stock with black oil sunflower), bluejays are the biggest "chickens." They are first to run at any disturbance. Chickadees are by far the boldest. If you can stand still near the feeder long enough (and it's not too cold), they will eventually land on your bare hand to pick up the seed you're holding in it. Pretty neat.

The woodpeckers (I get two varieties) love the suet feeder, and I do have a couple of squirrels who meader by from time to time. It all makes for some easy amusement.

I am feeding some of his distant relatives - we have corn and peanuts out for them - which the bluejays find fascinating. Their only real threat is the two-footed terrors next door being outside.

Hey MC and BC - I saw.....drum roll........Engine # 6050 - an SD40 if my information is correct - painted in original Illinois Central livery and with the Operation Lifesaver Logo on it. Good find, huh?

I would have run out to pat it had I been able to get out of the seatbelt, the car door, the car and walked about 25 feet all at the speed of sound.

I took notes instead!

38 here now, and raining, and looks like that's the day for us here. Got past the white Christmas and now the snow is slowly disappearing. I'm sure we'll get more, but sometimes not.

Good Thursday morning, everyone! Well, our morning temp is now 41, and,
if I remember correctly, will be slowing dropping today, to mid 30s by late this
afternoon. Looks like winter is back, but by Sunday & Mondays, will be back
in the 50s.

Breakfast this morning will be oatmeal & toast, or turkey bacon, sausage,
scrambled eggs, or sausage w/sausage gravy & biscuits.

Lunch today will be open-faced roast beef sandwiches, with mashed taters
and gravy, and green beans, with a garden salad.

Dessert special today, individual fried apple pies in a half moon shape.

The squirrels already cleaned out the bird feeders here. (Waits 'till the Scottie & the Westie doze off and then drop in[:D][:D][:D] - IF the dogs catch a squirrel or pigeon in their field of view, the varmit/vermin alarms go off![:D]

...Speaking of foreign power....saw various messes of it passing through here today....Even the lead Engine on a west bound CSX freight was a NS GE unit and right before that on the Frankfort line..{NS}, heading west, was a trio of power with one of them a Union Pacific unit with the big American Flag flying high on it's side.....It was not leading but was 2nd in line. And the 3rd unit was a NS unit still in prime paint....

Sounds like someone overheard a cell phone conversation in the church where all the family members were gathered, misinterpreted what was being said, and spread the news that they were found alive. The news media, naturally wanting that to be the outcome, jumped on it without verifying it. The world saw the result...

The disaster at the mine was unfortunate at many levels, from happening in the first place to the confusion about survivors. I'm sure that everyones desire to have the miners found alive colored a lot of what happened in the end. I also have no doubt that providing a false report was the furthest thing from anyones mind when it happened.

My thoughts are with all involved.

Unfortunately,we got the same news here. I saw it on the TV last night(?) where they
said most were still alive;then wake up,and hear OOPS ;all were dead. That is a tragedy in it's self. Maybe we do need censors,just to make sure the right words come out !! Our thoughts and prayers really do,go to those people.

Mark dropped in to answer a Q on the new Q thread just yesterday. I believe he was back here over the holidays, but may have returned to Iraq by now.
I think it is running up close to a year now, and hopefully we soon will learn of his return for good.

I am reminded of hearing Mark Hempfill speak of engineering work he had done in the past with mining and got to wondering why we do not see him on here in the diner anymore....Have I missed info on his whereabouts....Is he still railroading in Iraq....Anyone...?

...Yes, those folks will need lots of prayers....I have no idea how this will sort out...reactions, etc...will be varied. I can't imagine what emotions they are going through at this time. It was total elation last night right before I turned off the TV at about 1 am....and then to learn the different outcome this morning is mind bogging.
