Sacto: years gone by, the railroads used to pay a diner to stay open 24/7 to feed the crews. That was before 24 hour BK. They probably don't have that kind of pressure anymore in the bigger towns. They may still do it in smaller towns.

Hey, that beef stew with cornbread sounds delicious! [tup]

Speaking of which, I wonder does a small town dominated by a railroad have a diner that is open 24 hours a day specifically to cater to railroad employees? I remember that Portola, CA had one to serve the UP, and I'm sure there has to be one in Dunsmuir, CA, too.

Copcar: Start calling you "Smokey" up there? We can see the smoke from our 8th floor vantage point down here. We hear here that the fire is getting close to Tunnel 1 and UP is starting to round up tank cars that could be rigged for water&pumps at North Yard.

Going back to finish our survey near Denver Union Terminal (within 500' of where the Ski-train is parked at the platforms.) ...will have to tell the story from yesterday where we nearly got attacked by a wayward Texan motorist and MC had to get a fresh change of feathers. (wayward truck got within 8 feet of the $16,000 instrument sitting on the the back edge of the sidewalk)

bye-bye [banghead][banghead][banghead]

Brian - you need a new atlas. They just paid a lot of hard-earned tax dollars from the citzenry of Lincoln to dredge out Holmes Lake Dam - imagine - the land of no water has a dam right in the expensive part of town. Dam!

And you wouldn't believe what they are doing to the creek that flows through the middle of town - this is even costing all US taxpayers for this boon-doggle. MC knows of what I speak.

But I digress - the beach is a sandbox for the kids at Holmes and the man-made lake just west of the city has a man-made beach. Now with the warm weather........

And - you could be our landlord. We are quiet, petless, take our shoes off in respect for the new carpet and even do minor repairs w/o calling the landlord. (Somethings are just better not calling the landlord - like snaking sinks....) Plus - the rent is always paid on the first! The only wild parties we have are when I scare the daylights out of the driver when I elbow him during the night to turn over. (certain amount of yelling involved - on his part, not mine! I don't yell at half-deaf people and sign language doesn't work in the dark!)

spbed - my claws are twitching, but I will just say Happy 2006.

Now need real coffee........decaf just isn't hittin' it........ <~>

Tip Top of the Morning to You All,

CW, the French Toast and Grapefuit was simply marvelous this morning. Thank you so much!

Well, we have a warm day as well, but that's partially courtesy of some downsloping winds along the front range. Currently there's a fire burning up by the Moffat Line around Blue Mountain Rd. Guess it's flared up to 2700 acres courtesy of 40-60 MPH gusts. Sheesh, if this is January, I'm not sure I want to hang around here when July/August rolls around if we don't see some of the precip that points west are getting.

BTW, spbed, didn't you feel the need to post a plug for your website in your triptych of posts? [(-D] Take a moment out of your day, and enjoy a cup of coffee and some breakfast. My treat.

What does tuna have to do with trains? Is this a RR forum or a food forum?

Right on your heels, Joe! I couldn't wait to get here for coffee. I stopped in the local kitchen and had .5 cup.

Almost 60 here today. Driver had to do a little fishing yesterday after work. I went along and soaked up some winter sun and read the rest of the latest "The Cat Who" book in paperback. Purrfect afternoon.

Eat your heart out San Diego! And we have a whole lot less people on our "beaches".

Good Wednesday morning, everyone!

Since there was a request for French toast yesterday, decided to make some
for this morning. Along with the toast, for your breakfast enjoyment, you will
find grapefuit halves, along with the regular breakfast menu.

Had 48 customers for Produce today. Have more apples, bananas, lettuce,
and red potatoes.

Lunch today will be: your choice of vegetable beef soup, bean soup, cream
of brocolli soup, w/crackers or cornbread. Will also have some grilled cheese
sandwiches and peanut butter sandwiches to go with the soups.[C=:-)]

The rain did start here right around 9 this morning. Is still pouring, and have
had some thunder to go with it. I personally haven't seen any lightning, but
where you have thunder, there's usually lightning with it. And the rain is a
COLD[ rain, too.

There is plenty of the soups to have for supper also, and we'll add tuna melt
sandwiches to go with the soups.

Now I am intrigued. I will go hunting. There is such a place just barely south of the center of the city that may meet these standards. I will have to go look!

...One more thing Jen....back of that building and I believe adjacent to it...{don't think it is attached}, is a 2 or 3 car garage this couple owns too....and it's outfitted to allow the couple to have entertaining gatherings in it...Showed several motorcycles in it too....

...Jen...It was a light colored stone building that faced the street in front of it and if you would stand in the street and look at the front of it a street went back along it on the right side.....I'm trying to remember what it originally was but for some reason can't pin point exactly the former business...Possibly it was a blacksmith shop...It is an elongated building more narrow on the front than it is long...And yes, this part of town does look clean and rather neat....
