My father always used to say the the "Russians" were causing all the bad weather. Got me interested, because with the fall of the Soviet Union, there was no noticable change.

I figured it out. Ever notice that when you look at the weather channel web site, Canada has no weather? The map is shown, but there is NO weather. And in the past few years, it has gotten worse here.

I AM ABSOLUTLY CERTAIN IT'S THE NAFTA CONSPIRITY. The warm moist air comes out of the Gulf of MEXICO and it mixes with cold air coming down from CANADA. Since Canada doesn't have any real weather, the cold air is actually made by huge refrigerators camouflaged as forest and lakes.

And, uh, Kevin is in charge. Yeah, that's the ticket.

According to my maternal grandmother, the weather changed when people walked on the moon (of course that was all done in a TV studio, according to my paternal grandmother).

Anyway, Kozzie; the quick answer is there's mountains to the east, mountains to the west and lots of open space in the middle. This gives a lot of room for clashing dry and wet air masses with all sorts of fireworks in the spring and summer and other frozen nonsense in the winter. We won't even get into to what goes on in coastal areas as that's a whole 'nother situation. Then there's the southern plains, deep south, etc. I recall reading in some regimental histories from the Civil War that when regiments from New York were sent to Louisiana they couldn't get over the humidity - sort of my reaction when I moved to Tennessee yrs ago.

In the part of Appalachia where I am, we get the distinct advantage of the Gulf of Mexico as jeaton mentioned in his post mixing with stuff coming from the west and then in the winter we get other !@#$ from Canada and the Great Lakes which unloads on us, too. It's not uncommon, especially in winter to get 4-5 kinds of weather in one day.

Re the Weather Channel, (aka senior citizens MTV), it's a big help as to radar and warnings; especially recently. Sometime, if you haven't done so already, Kozzie, go to their website and look around. Accuweather and the weather site from University of Michigan are also good sources for background information as they are a little more "science oriented" than the weather channel.

P.S. Had a friend who was in Sydney for the Olympics. He quickly developed a tolerance for vegamite.

Actually, we have a very active jet stream - and I think I read that this is what causes our "funny" weather.

I reckon what would be unusual for you lot, is us eating Vegemite on toast for breakfast. I know Peter (M636C) on another post has actually explained where ti comes from. Makes it sound pretty awful..[:0][xx(] .And for many "up over" folk, first time is a real shock! It's very much a savoury taste. An acquired one I guess...

Eggs are pretty popular, if we want a bigger "brekky" e.g. bolied eggs in an eggcup, scrambled eggs, fried eggs with fired bacon....know we're really talkin!! Toss in a few fried tomatoes, and fried onions - heart attack food but boy, is it yummy! [:p][:p][:p]

Then there are all the healthy brekkies - yoghurt, cereal, fruit and combinations of these.

I think the big difference between "downunder" and "upover" breakfasts is that we tend to have more savoury breakfasts than sweet ones. I don't reckon many of us here would have doughnuts for breakfast. That would be more a thing we would have Morning Tea and Afternoon Tea. Still yummy though! [:p][:p]

Ahhhh! [:)] Fresh, warm cinnmon doughnuts and a strong flat white!....[:p][:p]

I've gotta stop taling about food....

i'll take butter on my toast thank you... no vegamite, no fancy jelly, jams, or preserves, just butter or peanut butter (i prefer cunchy over that fancy smooth stuff)

The bike trip wasn't so bad...included a stop trackside for lunch (from a hot-dog cart!), a bit of downtime at Proviso, back to trackside where I sat and wrote a letter (and mailed it) before heading back home. While out I saw a lot of freight cars that were of particular interest to me, so my trip was worth it, in spite of the lack of meeting (and pay therefor).

The lawn needed cutting...simple as that. 'Twas a good call, since it rained again this morning.

This was supposed to be another good biking day, but I only managed a couple of miles. Tomorrow is going to be better weather; I could get 30 miles or better, if things work out right. No grass to cut afterwards...just eight hours of work!

Dave - I have trouble eating eggs - love egg salad, trouble is, it is made with eggs! Ugh!

You eat like the people in Wisconsin - Breakfast at 8 am, coffee/tea and snack at 10-10:30, Lunch @ noon, another coffee/tea eat break at 2:30-3pm and dinner at 6pm. I spent a week there one day many years ago - they eat real butter, real cream and way too much food! But it is delicious!

Strong, flat white sounds like the plastic siding on our house..........

Talk about Montezuma. Here we can go to places (all on the railroad, too) such as Duck, Mudsuck, Black Eagle and Rum Jct. (sounds like a model rr name). One of my favorite local place names is Hoo Hoo Holler (love hearing that on the school bus announcements in the winter).

Let's open up another thread.

How about "inside" names for different runs on the rr? I recall the "Scarlet Shifter" and the "Big Mac" on the C&O, and a job on the New Haven called the "Midnight Horror." How about in your part of the country?

BTW - Sun's out here today after we got hammered (again) with high winds and sheets of "partly cloudy with a chance of scattered showers" at quitting time yesterday. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Dave - I live in beef country - so we eat a lot of chicken.

But as for strange things - I can't eat cottage cheese without a tsp of sugar on it. Gags the driver, but he puts pepper on it and salt on his apples - icky!!!!!! [xx(]

Years ago, on the Chicago District of the N&W and during the time that John Fishwick was head of the N&W, they ran a switch run with a pool crew on it out of Chicago that was symbolled FSR. It stood for Ft. Wayne Switch Run but the crews called it, among other things, Fishwick's Special Revenge.
