Everyone, I've been seeing these "Flat Wheel Cafe" posts ever since I've joined. Can someone PLAESE fill me in on this? Thank's. Does it require going anywhere?

Justin, the Flat Wheel Cafe is a place where people who love railroading meet to eat, exchange news and information, and just enjoy the company. I don't think that the cafe itself should go anywhere (except when it gets too full and needs to be refreshed) since it has flat wheels, and you know what flat wheels do to track. Some of us are honest-to-goodness rails, others wish they were (or had been), and others yet just enjoy sharing their experiences and knowledge and gaining more knowledge of the best form of transportation ever. There even some (such as Mookie) who have given the impression that they work for a railroad (she fooled me).

Justin, Welcome!!  Sign - Welcome  Hope you keep coming in.

Johnny, Nice synopsis of the Cafe!!  Thumbs Up

Joe, hope your Railfan Buddy feels better this weekend

and will be able to do what he like to do!!

Good Sunday morning, and welcome to the New Edition of the Flat Wheel Cafe.  We have a current temp of 25 degrees this morning, and I have finally heard the wind die down some.  Kept hearing a pine branch hit the bedroom window all night long.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  (Yeah, I've been awake for awhile.)

On the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage links & patties, hash brown potatoes, scrambled eggs, and pancakes w/plenty of maple syrup.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all in a little bit.

Good morning! Joe, thanks much for the cinnamon rolls this morning. I would have turned out another pan of them this morning if I had not run out of flour while baking cookies last night.

Tom, having computer problems is no fun, I've been there. But welcome back! It was nice to see you back in here this morning.

One of our local radio stations has been promoting an opera singer who's name is Denise Graves and she is to appear tonight at our Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls. But I don't think she is worth the price of a ticket, I'm sure that either CW or Mookie can sing better than this gal! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Right now we have 29 degrees here in Sioux Falls, and it promises to be a pretty nice day here, we could see a temp of 58 degrees before the day is over.

I hope the rest of you out there all have a good day!

Good morning, Mookie:  I see you've got your headphones on this morning!  Maybe in just a few more weeks, we'll be able to meet out in the garden in the mornings.  We may have to see about piping music out to the garden, or maybe not (I don't sound that good anymore singing), and I wouldn't want to ruin everyone's hearing.

Good  Friday morning, everyone.  Joe, I hope Matt's not got either the flu bug going around everywhere, or the strep infection that is also going around.  Even though this is Friday, tell him I'll make sure that there's some good homemade chicken noodle soup ready for him, after the doctor visit today.  Or would he prefer some other kind of soup?

I finally got a really good night's sleep last night:  slept like a log until about 7:00 this morning.  Joe, thanks for the coffee, juice and cinnamon rolls this morning.  We've got a temp right now, at 8:26, about 56, or 58 degrees.  They say we could see a high of 70 today.  You all have a good morning, and see you all later.

Morning glory, I am back! It took about sixteen plus hours over two days, but I got the PC formatted and reloaded, and am free from that cussified browser hijacker. I don't think I lost anything in the process. That was the worst thing to happen since I have had a computer, over 11 years now. At present, 47 degrees and clear in Carolina this morning, a little more than an hour after sunrise. It's good to be back. Take care

Tom

We made it to 68 degrees here in Louisville today,

now right at 64 and Very Breezy.

We had wanted to do some Train Watching today,

But..........

(maybe tomorrow)

I managed to get some stuff done inside the house,

Sarah is doing some things outside and Paula had

to make a trip to the store to replenish both our stores

at the house and the Cafe. (she is feeling better!)

Looks like Diner/Supper tonight will be:

Meatloaf, Shelly Beans and other assorted

Veggies.  Desserts will be pies (all flavors) a la mode.

Now if we could only get some rain here.....really dry!

You want some of that freezing rain they're promising us between 0100 and 0500 tomorrow?   It's all yours as far as I'm concerned.  Good thing I have tomorrow off.  If it gets too carried away I'm going to be out chasing wires and trees down all morning.

I do understand the predicament in that part of the country, though.

Someone finally closed the ice-box door here, thank God!!!  61 degrees and climbing.  There's still one itty-bitty pile of snow next to the drive outside my window here at work, but I bet it'll be gone by day's end.

I wish I could take the afternoon off and enjoy it, but alas I have too much to do here, and will probably be working the weekend again.

Back to the grind...

The big band music was powerful stuff back in the 30's....Clear different then what is broadcast to the masses now by any means.

I had an older brother back then and he would have that music on {radio}, much of the time and it must have made an impression on me as I can still hear and see that floor model Philco it was coming from.

Actually, I have  a CD in my truck that contains some old recordings of Wayne King.....Sound is not the best due to technology when the music was recorded.  But it's beautiful music.

I am not so sure about the 750 (Savannah & Atlanta Pacific), but the 722 was painted green--and the 4501 also, even though it was properly a freight engine

Yes, the 4501 seems to be a familiar number to me too....The engine {I do have many photos of it here in Muncie}, was really beautiful in all it's color and glory.  I'd have to hunt thru my Photo {prints}, to find them.  Perhaps later when feeling better I can find them and take a look to see what number it really was.

This grandpa will be on the road next weekend to attend grandaughter's third first birthday party.  The first was a small affair at my daughter's place while granddaughter and her parents were visiting up here a few weeks ago.  Her birthday is this weekend, but they're having the party at her aunt's house in CT, so that side of the family can attend.  Next weekend they're having a gathering so all of their friends from MD can attend.  Gramps will be there, too.

Besides, the lodging is free and I'll get to see a lot more of the little sweetie!

The HS band director we had here when my kids were in school had big band roots.  He assembled a "stage band" that mostly played big band favorites (as opposed to the usual HS band concert fare).  It was good listening.

Bearclaw and tea in the corner booth.  I see it has a NYC tablecloth....

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Like Quentin, I'm still taking plenty of antibiotic and the prescription cough medicine.  But at least I'm beginning to feel a little bit better each day.  (Only had one nap during the day yesterday, and still had trouble going to sleep last night.)

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, and chocolate chip muffins, along with turkey bacon, sausage links, scrambled eggs and toast.

I hope Tom gets his computer problems solved quickly, and also hoping everyone has a good morning.  You all take care, and see you later.

and the green Southern engine, what was it's number....750...??....

I am not so sure about the 750 (Savannah & Atlanta Pacific), but the 722 was painted green--and the 4501 also, even though it was properly a freight engine. I don't know of the 612? (the other Southern Consolidated) was painted green. At one time or another, I rode behind all three (not all three at once)--and on the 722. We have a nice photograph of the 722 leading the 4501 (and train behind) on the CG trestle in Leeds, Alabama--each engine had a canteen. Ricki and I were on that train, along with several young people and a few adults from Reform, Alabama. The next day, I surprised the people in the church in Reform by telling them that Ricki and I were going to marry; I think they had given up on me.

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men......

Found out today that the "adjustment" the shop made didn't solve the problem, so had to run back to the shop for another opinion.  Mechanic came out and said it needs a new clutch, so told him and dispatcher I was going home.  It's quite a pain to shut the truck off at every red light and stop sign just to put the truck in gear....

Nice day today, supposed to hit 50 here tomorrow, will try to enjoy it, get the feeling that I'll be home for at least two days.

Everyone who is sick, take care.....

Joe....back in the '80's, we had quite a few steamers with excursions come to Muncie and some continued on and some, like 765...after being here for several hours would go back home to the Ft. Wayne area.

Also....587......and as I said before, 611.....and of course 765....and the green Southern engine, what was it's number....750...??....and the 1218 {hope I have that number correct}.  Not thinking my sharpest tonight....

Still on the antibiotics and trying to get well....It's been  a while.  Thanks, Joe and Gandpa.....

Paula, I am so glad that you and Quentin, and the others are doing better. Here, I need to take leave of you for a few days. After fighting the browser hijacker for 3 days, I have had enough. Tonight, I will format the hard drive and reload XP to get rid of the thing. A local PC place will be glad to take it out without having to reformat/reload for $149, which I don't have, I also am going back to an older firewall program that is very effective, but no longet supported. The windows firewall just doesn't cut it. The old Sygate FW won't let ANYTHING in or out without asking at least for the first time. The hijacker brings up a screen telling me that I have a problem (do tell) and wants to do a scan of my machine. When I close that, another page pops up trying the same thing. This appears every 3 to 5 minutes and shuts everything down when it does. It even manages to freeze up my spyware program when it tries to find it. Yall take care and C U

Larry, your thoughts of the rail spur coming off east of the rt. 332 bridge seems the most logical route.

As for the two county roads....I can't see why they both couldn't stay open with the minimum movements on such a short spur....Sort of ridiculous.  Visibiltiy should be no problem.

Perhaps it all can be worked out without stretching out build time, etc.....

Trivia:  Some years ago when we still had the steam excursion trains coming into Muncie for an afternoon....I was up on that very overpass and photographed {as it was coming towards me}, 611 with about 20 passenger cars filled with it's fans and smoke pouring out the stack....and I got several really nice photos as it approached and passed.  I estimate he was already up to at least 50 or more mph......What a sight.

The pic's are from film and so not available to put in an email, etc.....{not digital}.

Our home is just a few miles from that overpass.  That NS rail line {they will connect to}, passes our location about a mile north.

Modelcar - I checked out that story and found the spot in question.  I will have to support one of the local's concerns - one or the other of the county road crossings should be kept open.  I'd guess the spur will come off just east of the 322 overpass and run along the south side of the road, which could cut off the two county roads.

NS cites liability concerns, but I think it's all workable.

That bean and ham soup sounds good - maybe some Italian bread on the side, too.
