Oh my, cut my toung off it's a boy,I've already got into trouble by not watching what I say tonight. Yes I hope he does appreciate the steel wheel on the steel raill and all it's done for this country and has yet to do!

Mookie CW - been busier than a one-armed paperhanger with an itch! Cruise thru all week with things nice and orderly and then weekends - have a complete mess here at my favorite spot. Robins....we got robins! Finally we got robins. Had to go out a little south of town to see them. Driver sez he has been seeing them on campus at our higher institution - probably some freshmen..... Welcome Justin. We have raised several young people in our cafe, so we welcome all ages. I am with you on the meatloaf. CW will do that for us. Spitty, cold rain here all day. Just like an all day sneeze! Snow west and north of us, but not here. Did see some trains - all coal except one and the one I really wanted to see was running behind a coal train headed Joe's way. Got to get me a ladder to look over the coal train that always seems to be in my way. I will be sending in my nomination for a world's record - world's youngest great-grandmother - at 29! Can you believe that? Yeah, me neither. Anyway - granddaughter and husband had baby - I think 4 am Friday - talked to daughter and she was still groggy from trying to catch up on sleep. No name boy. Can't decide between about 3 names. 7'11 oz 22 inches - regular baby-type. All doing fine - except maybe new grandmother. She seemed a little rattled by it all. 'Nuff news from here in the middle of nowhere. Out again tomorrow - must remember to take along ladder.... Mookie

Congradulations on the newbie! Very funny about the coal train and ladder. Funny because we are re-doing our shower and had to get into the attic. The darn ladder was too tall to fit into the utility room. Maby we could exchange. I just saw a, get this in this economic recession, a autorak! It was being pulled bu a Dash 9 and one of thoes "vacume cleaners" also known as a ES40DC. Looked like rain all day, still hasent. Prodably will over night though. I put that silly picture of the Amtrak station plate as my avatar, have to get on fixing that. See yall' for b-fast. Or maby a midnight snack! Thank's forall the warm welcomes!

Still struggling but I wonder if the antibiotics aren't doing part of that now....
Get well. Take that medicine.
Yes, Joe...those Canadian Geese can be very dirty and when they are large in numbers it's pretty bad.
Yes, still trying to mend...Thanks.
The three of us have been out all afternoon, so I brought back pizzas for everyone.
1. Anchovie; 2. Cheese w/extra cheese; 3. Pepperoni/mushroom; 4. Goetta; 5. Hawaiian; 6. Supreme; 7. Italian sausage calzones
Hope everyone has had a very good day today. It was breezy and warm out today, and lots and lots of people out. Unfortunately, we did not see any trains while we were out and about today. Maybe we'll have better luck next time.
Wonder if we'll hear from our Lincoln reporterette this evening. Mookie, got your ears on????

Cannonball:
On the "honkers"......Muncie has so many of them, hundreds and hundreds, year around. Canadian Geese...pretty good size birds. I really don't see how they survive over the Winter. It can be down below freezing and you can see them on White River floating by. Evening and morning lots of them will be moving someplace to spend the night or on their way back and fly in large V's.,,,Honking.
Hummingbirds.....And it really seems they have little fear of humans if we're not jumping around with activity, etc.....Just fly right up to one's presence. I find they will come so close then....stop, motionless a foot away to take a good look to see what we're all about.
Thanks for the good wishes....still fighting it all
Quentin, you are right bout them gittin' close to you . I was close to the feeder and one came up to my glasses and pecked at his reflection in the lens twice . Robins are shopping for worms in the grass at Home Depot in Prescott . Also, a V flight of honkers flew over close to the place ( home 20) mon. after noon heading to thier home 20 jabberin' as they flew . Ain't life good?? More and more migrating birds stop at our feeder & water bowl on the way home . Hope ya' git well quick .
Respectfully, Cannonball

tree68 Johnny - Didn't write what I did about the cafe because you were in any way wrong (you're right on the mark), just thought I'd throw out a different take.

Paula, thanks for the grits and sausage.
Tom, it's good to see someone else mention fatback. Out here, I don't think anybody knows the difference between fatback and rib meat (I sold both, cutting whatever the customer wanted off the side, during the year I worked in a general store; if you wanted cornmeal, plow points, horseshoes, yard goods, notebook paper, apples, chewing tobacco {by the cut and by the plug}, Portland cement, a sack or just a quarter-sack of flour, a sack of cowfeed...come in and get it); it's all called "salt pork," and it's almost impossible to find any without a streak of lean in it.
Birds--I haven't noticed any migrants yet, but we do have robins in our yard, in season, and I have noticed a hummingbird every now and then.
Quentin, we have two flowering bushes by the back walkway that the hummingbirds really take to. Its also popular with all the butterflies we get passing through here.
I'm like you...I sit out on the back deck and watch all the activity
Murray:
Your climate must allow all kinds of bird activity thru the Wintertime....Years ago we had a Cardinal pair here in a bush just outside of our bedroom window and little babies hatched and we could actually look right out into the nest to observe....But alas....one night and they were gone. We believe a cat got to them and ended it all...So sad. The nest was just about 4' off the ground.
But in the none Winter season, we do have lots of Cardinals here in our area. As I mentioned earlier, we have seen them in the Winter too.
Hummingbirds.....Just a few years ago we purchased two feeders and install one at a time right on the glass of the sliding glass door in fam. room and we can then observe that activity. Each week, one is installed there and then the other one is ready to put up while we clean the first one.
Our Hummingbirds last made an appearance at our feeder about Oct. 1st.
If I remember correctly, we'll see them around May 15th....They are lots of fun to watch. Such control of flight one cannot imagine how it is done....
I also found I can get very close to them. I sat in a chair outside where the feeder is and they will come right up to me as I'm being rather still. I believe I could hold a feeder and they would come to it....in my hand.
A decent day so far in the north woods, although I see some rain creeping in from the west.
Still working on a "wired" 1/25 Hummer - added real flashing lights to make it an emergency vehicle... We have a benefit dance for that organization tonight and I'd like to be able to take it along....
Back to work.

Morning All. Currently 70 and Cloudy. Expecting a high of 84 today
Quentin about 3-4 weeks ago we had an entire family of cardinals in my back yard...Mom, Dad and 3 or 4 little ones. It was quite the site.
Have not seen any hummingbirds yet, and its still too early for the swallows to return.
Spring is definately on its way htere though.
Good morning, it's Saturday. Paula, thanks for breakfast. Regarding the fish stew, I don't have the exact recipe, but it had ketchup, onions, black pepper, fatback and flat fish (bream perch, etc). It died with my father and I miss both of them. 50 and sunny in Carolina this lovely day. Everybody take care
Good Morning all......We have clouds and mild temps. 57 plus degrees right now but haven't seen the report for today. Believe possible rain but again, I think most of it is going south of us.
Joe, I believe some of the Cardinals actually stay in this area all winter. But was just checking out in our front and back yard, and the Robins are all around in their daily routine looking for worms.
Edit.....My sis in law in our home area of Pennsylvania, Somerset Co., has not seen any Robins there as of yet. I believe we're about 5 or so degrees warmer here in average temps due to elevation diffenence. 2000' there, and 937' here, hence a bit warmer.
good morning
rain this morning.we are going to have a break for a bit then rain tonight and tommorow.matt is doing alot better today.Quientin I have seen and heard the cardinals and other birds but have not yet seen any robins. They like to build a nest in our maple tree by our driveway.Going to help with chores today.
joe
grampaw pettiboneCould we have some red fish stew from time to time?
Good Saturday morning, everyone. Tom, send me your Dad's recipe, and I'll put it on the menu.
We are starting this beautiful Saturday off with a temp of 61 degrees. Supposed to see a high of 76 this afternoon. Not going to be too bad a day, just a little breezy. Maybe we should buy a kite, and fly it this afternoon!!
Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready. On the warmer bar this morning: bagels, bear claws, cinnamon rolls, turkey bacon, sausage links & patties, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, cantaloupe chunks, pancakes, waffles, grits, whatever else you might want to eat this morning.
Everyone have a great morning, and a very good day. See you all back in here tonight for our pizza fest.
Hi Justin and welcome aboard. There are some really nice and knowledgeable folks here and you can learn a lot on a variety of subjects. You will like the place, so come on in and have a seat. Paula, thanks for the supper. Could we have some red fish stew from time to time? My father made some of the best you ever tasted and another taste would be nice. Yall take care and sleep well.
A nice warm day here today....Really didn't check to see just how warm but it was in the upper 60's for sure.
Robins now a rather normal sight in our back yard. And Tulips coming up all around the house at Jean's planting spots. They will freeze yet, but somehow in the past they did come up and bloom.
Jean even vaccumed out both vehicles today and cleaned some Winter dirt off garage floor. No, I didn't help as I'm still trying to get well....
Caught an extremely long NS train coming in off the Frankfort line today as Jean drove us into town to get a bit of drive-in food. Said train had the power of 4 6-axle engines and covered hoppers and quite a few tanks....Mostly Corn Syrup. Last engine in lineup was still in full Conrail colors.
Edit: Oh yes, I must say welcome Justin.
locomutt Johnny, Nice synopsis of the Cafe!!
Johnny, Nice synopsis of the Cafe!!
I have really appreciated the welcome that you folks have given me in the few months that I have been visiting. In the years that we have been living here, I have had little opportunity to talk with other people who love railroading. Of course, Ricki loves to travel by train (else we would not have met), and she puts up with my conversation on rail matters other than just traveling by train.
Hi Paula,
Glad you stayed open a little while tonight, Miss Lynda is in Atlanta visiting her sister and some of your fine desert is what I find to be in order on my bachelor weekend.
Justin I think will be a fine addition to the group. Glad you are feeling better,
Roy
Justin - More than anything else, the Cafe (and it's alter ego, the Trackside Lounge) is a place were we can discuss non-railroad things without starting an off-topic thread. We know a lot more about each other as a result.
You'll find similar threads on other single topic forums as well. In fact, this cafe is a copy of one someone saw someplace else.
F'rinstance, it wouldn't be acceptable for me to start a thread about my granddaughter (today is her first birthday!) on the forum itself, but she, and a lot of other kids and grandkids, turn up in discussions here on a regular basis.
And we commiserate (or gloat) about our weather here, too.
The food is just fun - although I'm sure it's caused more than one person to go out and have the real version of our virtual meals more than once. The best part about virtual meals is there are no calories!
Stop back in from time to time!
bubbajustin cherokee woman Everyone, I've been seeing these "Flat Wheel Cafe" posts ever since I've joined. Can someone PLAESE fill me in on this? Thank's. Does it require going anywhere?

Welcome young man, you found one of my hang outs,
PL
Justin, welcome aboard the Flat Wheel Cafe. We're just a little ole diner/cafe car on a siding no one uses anymore. We just have to "clean house" every once in awhile, because we have a lot of people who come in to visit. We talk about anything you wish to talk about, from rails to trails, to buses, to planes, to whatever else you want to discuss. We keep the talk clean, because ocassionally there are children who come in (with our without parent/guardian), so there's no cursing, and no alcoholic beverages allowed in here.
Hope you become a regular to the Cafe! Everyone is always welcome in here. I hope you'll feel at home here.
Joe, hope Matt is feeling a little bit better tonight. Does he need a refill on soup, or anything?
The warmer bar has been replenished for tonight's Friday Fish Fry. You all enjoy, have a good evening, and take care.
