Good morning, it's Thursday. Currently, 20 degrees and clear in Carolina headed for the mid 40s supposedly. The snow we got yesterday was gone before the temp got above freezing, so I guess the sun was what did it. CW, thanks for breakfast, and everybody take care, stay warm.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Nice and cold here in Louisville:  9 degrees F, and I haven't heard what the wind chill is this morning.  Larry, et al, thanks for the information on King's Dinner.  Guess I'll do a little bit more research on that (or maybe a whole lot more research).

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, western omelettes, hash browns, apple slices

Everyone have a very  good morning, and Jay, I hope you enjoyed your birthday yesterday.  You all stay as warm as possible, and take care.

I know the answer to this one, Dale, but I'll let the later-in-the-day shift have a crack at it. Is oyster stew on the menu for these six tables?

CW, thanks for the pizza.

Perhaps we could try the Kings Dinner one evening, minus the cocktails. Could the no alcohol rule be bent so we could have the Rosannay Cabernet?

We have several palm trees growing here in Nanaimo in a downtown park, but they are bundled up in hay during the winter months.

I've been up to some early morning mischief, and now the 6 tables at the north end are covered with NP, CB&Q, D&RGW, NYC, Penn Central and Western Pacific tablecloths, in that order. Can anybody guess the pattern?

Paula thanks for leaving a late night snack,

Been a long hard day on the phones today, but well worth the effort

It's clear and cold here in WS tonight with a bit of snow left over in shaddy areas. A good mid Winter night to for a warm bed.

In the words of a railroad song, Good night America, I love you,

Almost too late, but I made it back to the Forum this evening: Happy birthday, Jay! I wish I could supply you with palm trees or nice tropical weather around here, but traveling to such places is definitely not on my bucket list.

Also, thanks for the offer to sign my books, but I shall have to turn it down. Books are normally autographed by their authors, co-authors, or editors...

This is the description of the "Kings Dinner" from the Panama Limited, as extracted from "Classic Trains Magazine" (Summer 2008) Page 76 (by Karl Zimmermann):

"'Adventurous Tonight?  Ask your waiter about the 'Kings Dinner' - $9.85.'  The menus didn't list particulars but in fact the meal included a Manhattan or martini cocktail, fresh shrimp cocktail or crab fingers (with special sauce), a Rosannay Cabernet d'Anjou, a fish course, charcoal broiled sirloin steak with buttered mushroom slices, potatoes and vegetables, a 'special salad created by your waiter,' and a 'heady cheese with apple slices' or a desert from the regular menu, coffee, and a liqueur."

So, I thought I'd be clever and look up "King's Dinner" to help CW out.  Aside from finding that it was a multi-course meal, I didn't find out much more than all of the half dozen sources I found with the search used exactly the same text...

The meal was offered on the Panama Limited at about twice the price of "regular" dinners.

How about a King's Dinner?

Johnny, let me know ecactly what a "King's Dinner" is, and I'll see about fixing it for everyone in the near future.  Meanwhile, I've got more pizzas ready for tonight.

Believe it or not, we managed to make it to 23 degrees F. today.  We had plenty of sunshine this afternoon, but it didn't melt much of the snow/ice around here.  Maybe by the weekend, when we are to have a high of 60 degrees.

You all enjoy the pizzas for tonight, and there's plenty of birthday cake left, too.  Just be sure you leave the big piece with the two numbered candles in it for Jay!!

Everyone have a good evening, stay warm and take care.

Good morning (afternoon to most of you) to all. Upper twenties, with murk (not enough yet to hang the stay at home flag out) still, and sunshine once the Wasatch have been overcome by the sun.

Many happy returns of the day, Jay. (My grandfather would say this to me, and I was a long time realizing that he was wishing me a long life, with the birthday coming back many times.)

How about a King's Dinner? I never did get to eat one when the IC offered it. I was also unmarried at the time, and it might have been too much for me, as I had slowed down somewhat from my college days' eating (one night, after supper, the girl at whose table I ate (she made sure that everybody at her tables had plenty to eat, and even brought me extra desserts) asked me if my father had been a millionaire).

Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to our Wednesday Afternoon/Evening Pizza Fest, especially for/in honor of Jay's birthday today.  On our menu:

1.  Anchovie; 2.  Canadian bacon; 3.  cheese; 4.  Chicago style; 5.  Hawaiian; 6.  Goetta; 7.  Pepperoni/mushroom/sausage; 8.  supreme; 9.  Italian sausage calzones

Our dessert today is also in honor of Jay:  yellow cake w/chocolate icing (and yes, if anyone wants ice cream to go with their cake, it is available).  But today, I think I will pass on the ice cream!

We are now up to 16 degrees F.  Think we may have trouble reaching 23 degrees?

Jay - plenty of sand beaches here in my area, and you can't see the other shore, either!   You may have an access problem getting to the water right now, though, as it is frozen.....

After decades of spending this day in the cold, I have resolved to spend at least one on some warm tropical island.  Won't even require a nearby railroad.

Jay

Coming to Nebraska, eh?  And we have lots of trains!  Even a guide to watch them with you!

Send me pictures of Lincoln's ocean views, sandy beaches and palm trees and I'll put it on my list.  Any place there with an infinity pool?  I prefer those with a bar right in the pool.

Jay, I will put you out on Bowling Lake - a walkway to the "island", good fishing, lots of company and if you want an infinity pool and drink - you should investigate the Embassy Suites.  We do, however, have sand - up north and I will head to Earl May for the palm tree and keep a glass of water at the ready - to splash you.

New bed arrived.  It is solid as a rock.  It is also frozen.

They put it on the truck overnite and foam does freeze evidently.  So I am going to go see if I can warm it up by laying on it.

Nite....

Jay; if you all want to come to Ky., I think we can find a "Sandy Beach"

next to the Ohio River. I Know R. J. Corman takes sand trains out of there

daily. Not sure about the other things, will have to do some more research.

(while sipping a Cool drink in the heated pool under the faux Palm Tree.)

(and depending on what kind of fish you like, there is plenty of Good

Fishing in the river here; so they say!)

If I remember right, the old Southern Crescent of Southern Railway linage had some of the best broiled trout you could eat together with fresh mashed potatoes (from the spud of course) and biscuits and cornbread that were among the best one could eat.

Had a dusting of snow here in WS with some moderating temps, kinda bright outside though. Have the late shift tonight so I have to get ready and go.

Take Care all,

Thanks for the greetings.

Looks like the weatherman is going to be a few days late with my present.  Not getting out of the deep freeze until tomorrow with temps in the 40's to follow in a few days.  Good thing warmer air is on the way.  I don't want to be grumpy on my birthday.

One thing I am going to add to my bucket list.  After decades of spending this day in the cold, I have resolved to spend at least one on some warm tropical island.  Won't even require a nearby railroad.

.....8 degrees when I first looked at the instrument several hours ago and now clear skies and beautiful sunshine.  After today, we're to start a warm up too for the rest of the week.  Perhaps into the lower 50's. That will be nice for a change.

I saw that lake effect snow coming down, straight off Lake Michigan that Carl mentioned...on the radar last night.  Straight down far into Indiana....Just a bit unusual.  Lake effect snow from the lakes usually trail off the lakes in a southeast fashion and not quite as far as that appeared to be doing on radar last night.

We have received about a half inch overnight...probably from the edges of that lake effect.  Again, reaching way more south than it normally does.

Yes, J....our Muncie StarPress, has the nasty front page articles and photos of those massive pileups over on I-69 yesterday.  Seems people were overdriving the conditions and something happened and like dominoes, the massive accident occured.  Last night, it was reported the 3rd person has died from it all.

It's about time some of these snowy winter conditions moderate some....Looks like we're going to be above our average snow fall for this season.  We're getting close to the figure now to what the total season generally receives.  Just a bit longer to go yet too.....Short month...and then the transitional month of March.  Than hopefully very little beyond that.

Since we now have Fallen Flag tablecloths, could we have occasional Fallen Flag delicacies on the menu? The only one I can think of would be the Northern Pacific's "Great Big Baked Potato". Did the other railroads, such as the Pennsylvania, C&O or Santa Fe, also have well known meals?

Dale; I'll have to get the "C & O Dining Car Recipes" book out and let

CW peruse it for any good dishes. (and there are several!)

Happy Birthday Jay!!!!  Happy B-Day

Good morning!  Happy Birthday Jay!  Hope this isn't a really "taxing" one.  You didn't think you would get by without at least one punny, did you?

Lump going out the door this morning.  No, not the Driver!  Getting rid of bed between 10 and noon.  I have spent my last uncomfortable nite on it.  The new one will be so nice - at least for a week or so.  Talked to someone who has a Tempur-pedic type and they love theirs, so it bodes well for our liking it.

CW - I like grape jelly, so it was good!

Q - I saw that mess in Indiana on tv.  I am so glad we are down to a little snow on the front lawn (north side of house)  They said we would have warm weather starting tomorrow and on thru the weekend, with maybe a little ......  rain......imagine that - rain with no ice.  Having said that - we will still have lots of winter here.  We can't sneak by w/o a major storm and they usually do come in Feb-April.

We have a birthday today, here at the Flat Wheel Cafe:  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JAY!!  Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day  Hope you have a great day!!

To celebrate Jay's birthday, for breakfast this morning:  pancakes and waffles, scrambled eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

Probably not as well-known as NP's potato, Dale, but just about every company had something special on their menus. I have a book titled Dinner in the Diner, published decades ago, containing recipes from most of the major railroads.

Cold here this morning--two above, with every chance of dropping some more before sunrise. Our neighbors to the east, however, in Porter and LaPorte Counties in Indiana, are getting dumped on by a narrow band of snow coming straight down the Lake--Valpo Ed may have gotten up to two feet from this snowfall, which started yesterday and has lasted most of the night, and only now is showing signs of letting up.

CW, thank you for the friendship card. Due to the recent unpleasantness of the Econ-o me, freight haul / wk. ends has come to an abrupt shut down. However, grocery haul for the senior center still goes. Produce is slowing down, not many items tho. 80 deg. here in the mtns. today/w sun & breeze. Be sure to put a warm brick or 2 at the foot of yer bed to keep feet warm. Respectfully, Cannonball

Hmm, we've only got 1 dog and 1 kitten and all the bricks we have are outside in one of

our flower beds; probably take too long to heat up after they were brought inside.

(and I AIN'T Going Outside, It's Too Cold!!)

Edit:  It's about 14 degrees here now, wind chill around 0, -5;

winds are strong enough to bring more tree branches down.

Q, sounds like that is a very good neighbor!!

14.7 degrees now here in the outskirts {west}, of Muncie.

Snow squalls today could have produced 2 to 4" of snow depending where one was in this area...

One thing for sure it caused havoc on I-69 about 20 miles north of Indy today.....29 automobiles....4 semi's....and one emergency vehicle....and 2 deaths....!!  About 10 miles north of that 20 vehicles in another one....!  Believe no deaths in that one.

I believe we received, I'll call it 2" of the stuff here at home base.....And my good neighbor did another cleaning job on our driveway and side walk right into the front door....What a neighbor..!
