We're supposed to get 1 to 2 inches of snow tomorrow.  Will see how much, if any, we actually wind up with.  Been on the phone all morning, calling for estimates to get rid of the pine branches that fell during and after the ice storm.  Still waiting for about ten or twelve tree services to call back.  There have been two that have come out and given us estimates.  Want several more, before we decide who to go with.

Now, time for our Friday Fish Fry.  On today's menu:

1.  Catfish; 2.  Flounder; 3.  Halibut; 4.  Haddock; 5.  Perch; 6.  Jumbo butterfly shrimp; 7.  Breaded oysters;

Side dishes:  baked beans, cole slaw, fries, hush puppies; breaded fried mushrooms, macaroni and cheese, turnip greens mixed with mustard greens

Desserts:  German chocolate cake, apple cobbler, cherry cobbler, peach pie and pecan pie

MC, as Mookie said, be sure and dress warmly.  We don't want you and Boss Hen getting too cold and getting sick on us, now do we?

Just had another phone call from another tree service; said they'd be out as soon as they could.  (Wonder exactly when that will be!)

Everyone enjoy your meal, have a very good afternoon, and take care.

Good morning all....vacation day today and last night Mrs. Eolafan and I went downtown Chicago to see "JERSEY BOYS", the musical stage play about the history of Frankie Vali and The Four Seasons.  Being a big fan of theirs, I highly recommend this play for anybody who grew up in the 1950's or 1960's and especially if you are from the Northeast part of the country originally (I grew up in Yonkers, N.Y.)...it is a blast of a show!

Dinner I have my fork poised waiting for the GC cake for Joe.  Oh yum!

Weather chilly, but sunny.  Weekend will be chilly, but if it is not snowing, not blowing, and not below zero - it will be a nice weekend.  Next week - temps in 40's - and I will definitely shove all that east.  Sir Chix and people west and north of us will have to figure out how to get in on any of that.

Driver and I have been sending the stock prices on tissues up this week.  So far - all allergies.  Have to pry eyes open in the morning and little cough syrup at bed.  And like the wind that brought this, we blow, blow, blow....

Thanks CW.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.   The lake effect machine is cranked up right now, so the folks to the south of me are getting hit.  We're getting some fringe flurries, but nothing significant.  Supposed to be around most of the weekend, though.

It's my day off, so I'll take my bearclaw and tea in the recliner.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  We're kind of hovering around the 20 degree mark this morning, supposed to be down to 18 or 19 degrees F by 8 a.m., going for a high of 40 this afternoon.

Larry, you're always excused from whatever we're serving in the Cafe, whenever you have a fire department dinner meeting, as I know you always have something really, really good to eat!

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

On the counter this morning, are the doughnuts:  cake, glaze:  plain doughnuts, chocolate covered, chocolate covered doughnuts w/vanilla filling, chocolate covered w/cream filling, doughnuts w/raspberry filling, chocolate covered long johns w/cream filling, danish w/apple, peach and cherry filling, along with bagels and bear claws.

Everyone enjoy your treats this morning, have a great morning, keep safe and take care!

CNW 6000
Aidan James Braun is has an ETA of 7/7/09.  I gots more folks to tell.  Back later!

Dan and Misty, already have the name picked out, huh?  Way to go!  Now, you know exactly how to decorate the baby's room!!  Congratulations to you both.

Now that they're finding out so early whether it's a boy or a girl, the names are showing up early.  My next grandchild (due at the end of April) is Owen Nicholas.

Dan - Congratulations.  Kids are a lot of work, but they're a lot of fun, too.

I'll skip the pizza tonight.  Had a dinner meeting at a neighboring fire department and they served a turkey dinner.  Mmmmmmm!

Thanks Carl!  I was trying to find an amusing way of referencing the gender discovery and heard an old TV jingle while watching a movie.  We debated keeping everything hush-hush but there's far too many folks to keep quiet in front of.  Might as well have some fun with the whole thing I guess.

Sisters:

Nothing like em.  I have two of them and love them very much. Even after 55 and 53 years respectfully (good thing they don't read this forum). Yes they are younger than me. A fact I am reminded of from time to time.

Dana is another female version of Daniel--at least I know of one instance in which that was the case.

Oh, I almost forgot: congratulations, Dan! (I prefer AJ to the dark chocolate alternative, at least when it comes to candy bars.) My daughter and son-in-law always told us the gender of our upcoming grandchildren as soon as they found out, but the names they chose were a closely-guarded secret.

Pat and I might make a quick trip to Wisconsin some day in the next month or two--quilt show northwest of Madison.

SJ, the first two times I went through Rochelle were on board some BN passenger trains (about a month after the merger in 1970); the second pair of times were a little over a year later, on CNW freights 259 and 142. I'm not sure it would have been as big an attraction then; CNW wasn't nearly as busy or as fun to watch.

Moo-

Aidan is close enough to Daniel.  I prefer Dan to Daniel anyway...we'd like to try for a girl after things get settled a bit from Aidan.  Time will tell.

Never gone on to WI?  Sad...

BC - I barely knew where Chicago was.  Rochelle could have been on the moon!  I wish I knew then what I know now and I probably would have never gone on to Wisconsin.  Could have saved that for another time!  Traveled in the dark pretty much both ways, so couldn't even tell you if the scenery was "purty"....

Joe - you beat me to it - I was going to tell you it was Friday!

Dan - I didn't see a Daniel in the name anywhere.....so now if you have a girl later on, you will have to name her Dani..... Big Smile

Mookie

Thanks for info, Jim.  Yeah - Lincoln has service at primo hours - 1 am or 5 am!  But if Amtrak is late, then you can actually see the city!

Only correction on your scenerio is that we went from Lincoln to Aurora, and while we got off there, the train went on into Chicago.

Mookie, I think the CB&Q train you may have ridden was the Nebraska Zephyr in one direction and the Aksarben Zephyr in the other...long since gone. Or perhaps the California Zephyr?

I don't know for sure - I was traveling in the middle of the nite with a 3 year old and luggage - totally unaware of what to do for sure.  I had a CBQ pass because of my Dad, but that is about all I could tell you.  Trains were the last thing on my mind at that time.  Smile

I went to Omaha on one of the Zephyrs about '59 - on a lark and to Denver in the early 60's - all on a pass - very nice!

We're going to deviate from the normal routine, and making today Thursday Pizza Day.  You'll see exactly why  come Saturday morning.  On tap for this afternoon and tonight:

1.  Anchovie; 2.  Canadian bacon; 3.  Cheese w/extra cheese; 4.  Chicago style; 4. Goeta; 5.  Hawaiian; 6.  Pepperoni/mushroom/sausage; 7.  Supreme; 8.  Italian sausage calzones

Desserts today:  Chocolate cake w/white icing, yellow cake w/chocolate icing, and the following cobblers:  apple, blueberry, cherry and peach.

Everyone enjoy your pizzas, have a good, safe, warm afternoon and take care.

.....It looks nice outside this morning with sunshine and white puffy clouds floating across the sky.  But....Temp is 19.2 and wind.  I went out for the morning paper some time ago and it felt like real Winter.

Light skiff of snow over night just on the grass.  Streets bare, etc....

This too {wind and cold}, shall pass.

Mookie, Amtrak still has one train in each direction at LaCrosse but not via the route you described above.  The route you likely took back in 1968 was from Chicago through Aurora and then up the C&I subdivision through Rochelle (that trackage no longer sees Amtrak unless a detour is needed due to flooding or some other problem and that happens from time to time like when home rails are being worked on and disrupt the schedules of #7 and #8), East Dubuque and up the Mississippi River to LaCrosse on the old CB&Q.  The CB&Q station in LaCrosse still stands but is no longer a railroad property, I believe it is owned by a private commercial business concern.  Also, Lincoln is still served by Amtrak also twice a day as well.

Eola Jim:  I spent the better part of a day at the LaCrosse Depot in about 1968 (had been visiting Strum, Osseo and Augusta relatives) - but I imagine that depot is gone.  I got off the train at Aurora, IL and then caught another train to LaCrosse.  22 hours going from Lincoln to LaCrosse and 24 coming back.

Does Amtrak service that area at all?

I'm back from my trip to Madison and LaCrosse, WI folks and glad of it!  Tuesday I drove to Madison for some customer product training and then on to LaCrosse in the late afternoon.  My Tuesday drive was on dry roads and totally uneventful.  Tuesday night I arrived in LaCrosse rather late and grabbed a Subway sandwich and drove to the Amtrak station in time to see #7 arrive about ten minutes early...he had three units and the usual consist otherwise.  His station stop was about six to ten minutes which is a bit longer than usual but they had lots of luggage to unload up front and some evident confusion boarding some passengers and then beat a quick exit from LaCrosse.  Yesterday was colder and snowy in LaCrosse and after my customer business I left LaCrosse at about 1:30 and drove non stop home to Aurora, IL (my word, did I need a rest room upon arriving home...not even time to greet my wife and puppy until after a rest break!!!).

I am now off to a customer visit in Schaumburg and then I'm taking my bride to see "Jersey Boys" tonight for a belated Valentines Day present.  Be safe, everybody!

Glad I had to come in really early to work this morning.  The roads are just plain nasty - there have been a number of accidents.  There was no traffic when I was enroute.

Hungry this morning - I'll have one of everything but the grits.

Back to the grind.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Well, we have a temp of 29, 30 degrees, with some snow showers.  An hour ago, it was coming down pretty good; now, not so much, if anything, coming down.  Wind chill is in the teens, and will stay there all day.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy; hash browns, oatmeal, grits, toast.

Everyone have a good morning and enjoy your breakfast.  Keep safe out there, and take care.
