Yeah, Dan, don't know about making Sarah mad:  but the couplers on the cars do make her a little bit aggravated at times.  Then she has to 'smack them around'Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I've got the warmer bar refreshed for tonight's Chinese Night.

We got a pretty decent rain shower around 4 this afternoon.  At least now, we won't have to go outside and water the flowers and tomato plants.  But, I do need to go out and pick some tomatoes:  got a few regular size tomatoes to pick, along with a whole bunch of cherry tomatoes.

***Note to self: don't make Sarah mad!***

I'll grab some gatorade and pretzels and a corner booth.  I feel the urge to lurk before going to work.

I remember some of the programs you all have mentioned:  from seeing them on TV while I was growing up (and no comments from the peanut gallery that I haven't 'grown up' yet, either, since I'm only 4 ft 6 in tall!).

Lunch and supper menu today:

Chinese:  chow mein,  chop suey, moo goo gai pan, seafood combo, pepper steak, boneless spare ribs, mixed vegetable platter, roast pork fried rice, fresh shrimp fried rice, beef fried rice, chicken fried rice, wonton soup, lo mein, egg foo young

You all have a great afternoon,  keep cool (or warm, if it's very cool where you're at) and take care!

.....A wonderful list Tom....Don't forget Arthur Godfrey with his microphone out in the ?? and one could hear birds chirping.  And he sometimes talked about his DC-3 he loved so much....

We had "Just Plain Bill" in the afternoon that seems to stay in memory to me as it was turned on over at my best friends home as we would be playing outside, etc......

Oh, there are so many from that radio era.....WCKY Cincinnati with lots of country music.....Wasn't called that then.

Edit:  The TV signal to our little town was impeded by the near by terrain.  Out farther east, which was more distant from Pgh., they were higher in elevation and the Laurel Mt. was actually visable from there....the Pgh. TV signal produced a TV pic. almost crystal clear {by standards of those black and white days}, at a taven out in that area.

Don't forget our famous {near my home}, in Pennsylvania....KDKA station....one of the first commercial stations {in the country}, and later then they {Pittsburgh}, got an early TV station, WDTV....Channel 3....The Dumont Television Network....!  Believe that was about 1947 or 48....We {at my home purchased our first TV in 1948}, brand:  Air King, and we had to pull the signal from Pgh. over 70 miles and from across Laurel Hill mountain....54' tower with double stacked all channel {Channel Master}, antenna with 300' of 300ohm line that was located between the tower and our home.  Snowy, but we in fact did get a pic......Now, in thinking back, I don't know how...

Johnny the bellboy worked at a hotel in Miami when Phillip Morris got a phone call. Johnny was sent to get him and entoned "CALL FOR PHILLIP MORRIS" Morris liked what he heard and hired him on the spot! Red Skelton was originally sponsored by Avalon Cigarettes. Remember them? Fred Allen sponsored by Linnett Bath, then Sal Hepatica and Ipana toothpowder and toothpaste, and finally by Ford. Remember Allen's Alley with Senator Claghorn, Mrs Nussbaum and the rest? Portland Hoffa, Vera Vague. Did you know that the reason Eddie Cantor danced around so much was that when he did vaudeville, they threw so much stuff at him that he had to keep moving to avoid being hit.....

Fibber McGee was sponsored by Johnson's Wax and Jack Benny by Jello

Stay around me kids and ye will learn something!

"CALL FOR PHILIP MORRIS!" - another cigarette commercial, and a take-off on another lost icon - the hotel lobby page, before the days of PA systems.

Somewhere in my collection of LPs is one with several "Lone Ranger" episodes.  One finds oneself almost automatically closing one's eye, conjuring up an image of the characters in a room, or out on the trail, or whatever.  It's just too easy with TV.

We have a winner, and yes, it was Walter Winchell. He used to come on the radio Sunday nights on our way home from church. My father was determined to never miss him, and I remember it well. I was just a wee lad but I will never forget his newscasts.

.....I believe global warming moved out west for the latter part of this summer.  I really don't miss the extreme humidity we normally get here this time of the year along with pretty good heat....

Of course we still have some elevated humidity.  Windows are closed.

Edit:  And yes, I was here to hear "it live".....{Referring to our newsman statement in above post....}.

I knew that - but I never heard it live.

All of 50 here.  This is August?  What happened to global warming?

This is my Friday, too.  Railroad on the real Saturday.  Plenty of stuff to do around the house, too.

Good Thursday morning, everyone!  Feeling much better this morning:  headache has almost totally gone away.  I say almost, because a little bit of it is still lingering.  But I am feeling a bit better this morning.

Coffee, juices, lemonade, teas are ready to go, also hot water ready for hot tea.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  toast, bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs, bagels, bear claws, and various fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, cherries, cantaloupe, other melons)

Our current temp this morning is ranging from 74 to 77 this morning.  High today (like yesterday) around 96, 97).  Humidity started climbing back up yesterday.  We're supposed to see some rain by Sunday, chances increasing between Monday thru Wednesday.

You all have a great morning, and take care!

Thanks Bob,

That would be the afternoon southbound run stopped at the station here in Nanaimo.

Unfortunately the station was heavily damaged by an arsonist a couple of months ago.

Perhaps in 5 or 10 years we will be able to view images like this in "real time", and watch trains travel across the land. Seeing hundreds of people flow out of a commuter train would certainly be interesting!

The Bobcat and it's cousins with other brand names are often called skid steers, as they steer by applying the brakes on one side or the other.  Despite most having four wheels (there are tracked versions) the wheels don't steer like a car or truck - more like a bulldozer or tank.

If you're really good, you can put one side in forward and the other in reverse.  Zero radius turns!

If you can name an attachment, they probably make it for them.  I even saw two with pavement breakers on them - breaking up a concrete roadway.

Good day,

I got to see a train strike a parked car here yesterday afternoon. I was 3 blocks away watching a short freight cross the road when I heard a smash. The car got a dent and two flat tires from being bumped sideways. It was just a short train, with two GP9s, 3 grain cars and a propane tankcar. The northbound train crew had to watch back to back crossings, with the second one at a sharp angle. I guess the guy figured there would not be a train between the northbound RDCs at 11:00 am and their return at 3:00 pm.
