Today at Wheaton Illinois, I saw something very special. I saw #8567 of the Union Pacific. For those of you who don't know why that engine is speial, it is special because it is an un touched Chicago North Western. [:)]

You say a CN&W engine. I have seen it twice but that was a long time ago. Where did you see it?

What I saw was a CNW still in Green/Yellow paint. I wasn't where I could get a number for it though.

I did a little rail snooping around the yard of the CN here in Fond Du Lac, Wi,and boy did I see some neat and interesting units. On the RIP track was WC/ex CNW GP7 / 9 # 4133,in its green and yellow paint sheme, with the FRVR railroad logo on the side of the cab, and shes been completely parted out. For a while (4-5 months), I am thinking that it was in the shops to salvage usable parts from the locomotive. It was not seen on the RIP track,as it was on freight car trucks, but now it has the 4 axle trucks that the unit is suppose to have. Also sitting with this unit is WC GP's #1503,1505,1506,1507, & 1508.Apparently these units are all dead.Disposition is unknown, though units 1508 and 1503 are sitting behind the ex CNW unit. On the South side of the yard was NS SD60 # 6596 in the new NS logo, along with NS D9-40CW # 8994. By the ex CNW roundhouse is CN M.O.W OHIO crane X-21 # 503000. This week WC unit GP40 3026 has been seen doing switching chores on the South part of the yard. This locomotive has the State of Wisconsin map on it.Unknown as to where it went.Did not see it working this Saturday.

Two interesting items in Springfield, OR today.

A two unit set of light engines westbound ... both of them NS C40-9Ws.

Three 40 foot boxcars in the Springfield local. (See thread moving for dismantle?)

Saw a GE C44-9W leading two SD40-2 locos

SD40-2 BNSF pumpkin
SD40-2 BNSF patch job on Santa Fe blue and yellow paint

All on the CSX in central Florida
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

Today I saw Amtrak P42 #124 pulling two coaches and 8 flatcars, followed by Amtrak GP38 #720. They were heading south down the NEC through the Wilmington Station.

The flats cars appeared to have concrete ties. The ties were almost the length of teh cars. Can concrete ties support more then 1 set of tracks?

switch ties

AHH! Makes Sense. Thanks.

athelney ; 309 runs from Joffre Qc to Mac yard in Toronto. The 6000s (SD-40u ) are based in Edmonton and the 5078 in Winnipeg. The 6900s are now IC engines ( ex-GECX leasers )maybe out of Homewood ILL. So they run all over the CN system, you may see one any time in the future.

Where did you spy these good old loco's ? _ Where were they headed? - like to know if they may come my way some time

At Ravenna,Ky. yard(CSX) ,I saw the usual C44-9's or AC4400. Got lucky also,UP C40-8 and NS C40-9 leading KUCX (Kentucky Utilities) loaded coal train. At the east end of yard was a GP40-2 and slug ex GP30 and a big surprise, 3 SD40-2's. Haven't seen those around here for a long while.

Things seem to be up and running again on CN -- was out at lineside this afternoon at Page and trains are running westbound again on CN -- In fact one of the first ones I noted was westbound # 353 with BCR dash9-44 # 4643 leading and trailing was CSX dash 8-40 # 7766 - another rarity for this part of the world. You never know with CN these days!

The other day I took pictures of the Bearing Cross Railroad Bridge spanning the Arkansas River. If they turn out well I will submitt one or two to Railpictures and see if one will get accepted.

Then everyone can see the "lift" section which I think is neat. [;)]

Today I did some railfanning and as I crossed the bridge I noticed the railroad bridge was going up. So I went that direction and when I got there it was all the way up. I took a couple of pics of it in that position. A UP intermodal train (with a UP engine and an NS engine) has just cleared the bridge. I actually took pics of that train while I was at Union Station (the old Missouri Pacific depot) where Amtrak stops. Another train, with a SP patch unit was leading another train and had to wait for the bridge to come down. While the bridge was up I noticed it had a device to block trains from falling into the river. I could not tell if the "door" was concrete or steel. Perhaps this is a weight that comes down when the bridge goes up, but I am not too sure about that. I think this is the first time I have ever noticed the bridge in the up position. I am not sure how the pics will turn out but I will post them and give a link when they are ready.

In the locomotive department, I saw a freshly painted CN SD40-2 with IC markings below the engine's number on the side of the cab. I've also seen a couple of SD90/43Macs in CEFX red and white.
In the car department, I briefly glimpsed an Erie Western box car in a southbound UP train. Imagine that! [8D]

This morning, right past my office window

a short train with an old yard engine in #2 postion with the amber rotating light on top activated. About 20 or 30 cars including a crane on a flat car, and bringing up the rear was an old BN caboose in very very faded green.

And it was going like hell eastbound into Minneapolis

OK here is the order in which I saw a loco consist on the NS mainline which runs parallel to the PA turnpike. This is only 20mins away from me.
1. NS SD40-2
2. Dash-940C
3. UP SD70MAC (fresh paint)
This was an intermodel train w/ a very unusual consist. It also had DTTX reporting marks every car. Ever since then I've seen unusuall amounts of UP power on CSX, Amtrak, NS, and Conrail trackage. I wonder whats going on??

Out linesiding this afternoon at Page BC - CN mainline out of the Fraser Valley , saw CN train # 306 with CN SD 50F # 5457-- leading IC SD40-R # 6007 -- not that common to see IC out this far west .
