On a quick stop at the Rochelle Web Cam, I spotted some interesting MOW equipment, certainly related to all the ties that are laying along the track right now. Of particular interest was a trailer behind one of the vehicles:

Is that what it looks like?

On a whim, I took a ride to Janesville, Wisconsin, on Saturday. Quite a bit of Wisconsin & Southern power in the "Five Points" area and near the roundhouse. SD40-2 4002 was switching cars on the west end of the yard (after I spotted movement from the nearby Taco Bell), and I spotted a train while on my way back to the Five Points. I caught up with said train at Delevan Drive, SD40-2s 4001 and 4007 led the train. Some interesting cars: Illinois Terminal covered hopper (rusted badly), a tank car that I believe was Mexican (GAMX rep'ting marks), and a half-pink FMC cvd hopper. I think this train was either the JC or the MAJ, I'm not sure.

I saw this CNW engine a few weeks ago in Rose Yard in Altoona. Hadn't seen one before, and this was the best picture I could get. And Zach (UPTRAIN) informed me that this was the third C44-9W ever built! (so you can blame him if he's wrong)

Here are a few trains I saw while in Missouri. They were all BNSF trains.

Friday morning at 10am:

9721
5740
5723 Pusher

10:20am:

3 engines (up front) but could only get engine number for one, it was 8820
9632 and 9993 were pushers

1pm:

5652
5603

5733 pusher

Went into Springfield Friday afternoon and while driving over the bridge by the loco service facility I saw a bunch of SF units and a BN green unit number 8024.

Later Friday night I saw 8024 as the 4th unit and 2 or 3 SF units all pulling a freight northwest out of Springfield.

4pm:

665 SF
and boxcar AOK 181984 or 9170 not really sure from my notes [:(] [B)]

8pm

9270 BN green with white face
8926 pumpkin
9446 cream

Saturday 730am:

1639 SF

10:30am:

9661 BN cream with funny sounding horn

I just saw southbound Amtrak Hiawatha #340 or 342 at 10:00pm through the Grayland Metra station in Chicago. The train was running about an hour and a half late. The interesting thing was the head end engine was a SOO Line geep running long hood. Train must of had some problems. Anyone heard where they swapped locos?

Went railfanning for the forth or fifth time in two weeks:

Train Symbol Engine #(s) Time
11J SD40-2 #3396, SD40-2 high hood #3256, 12:09PM
38G C40-9W #9090, SD70M #2591, SW1001 (still in blue) #2110

we then saw 19G sitting in the siding and it waited for the following trains:

34M C40-9W #9438, C40-9W #9637 2:48PM
16T three C40-9W's (9353 leading) 3:47PM

19G finially started up:

19G C40-8W (still in blue) #8325, C40-9W #9258, SW1001 #2104 3:55PM
35A C40-9W #9413, C40-9W #9806 4:45PM

9 out of 15 engines we saw were C40-9W's (the common power on NS, over a third of the NS roster is C40-9W's).

Today on the way to work I saw a Canadian Pacific boxcar setting on an overpass. I did write down the number but it is in the truck. [:(] If the spirit moves me I might get it later and report it. [;)] I have seen a lot of Wisconsin Central cars there too. The newspaper is published not far from there and these cars are probably carrying the paper rolls.

The number was CP 220289 [:)]

on saturday I saw Two UP engines heading up the balast train from Rock springs to Janesville. They were ideling in the yard in Madison, wich belongs ot the Wisconsin and southern. I think they were both SD40's but I'm not positive. Numbers were 2977, and 2960, which was an ex-CNW unit.

Also last night the WSOR local came, WSOR 2051 and 2056 as the power. Both are SD20's.

When do they typically run? Why the UP power? Just borrowed?

So many questions!

Saturday afternoon my husband, daughter and I were headed through Sussex, and saw a coal train led by three locomotives: two UP in the lead, and one WC. I wasn't close enough to see their numbers, and I don't know my locomotives well enough to know exactly what they were. I've seen UP coal trains nearer Milwaukee, but this was the first time I'd seen 100+ cars loaded with coal on WC's line with UP power. Cool.

On Saturday (I just forgot to post about it [B)] ) I saw:

UP 8069
UP 7292

The horn of the 8069 sounded worse than a yard switcher. There must have been something wrong with it. It did not sound normal at all.

They were pulling a empty coal train. One the end of the trains was SP 6288 but the 6288 was in a UP number patch. At least it still was wearing SP colors, just not SP engine numbers.

And earlier in the week (yes, forgot to post about it too [B)] , you know I must be getting older lol ) I saw UP 6735 at the wye ready to head out of town. I also saw a CNW unit but it was headed towards me and I couldn't get a number.

I was in NY couple weeks ago when a UP SD70M with 2 FURX's came rolling by that wasnt the really astounding part though. The best part was that I saw a Cotton Belt (SSW) car resently and freshly painted by the UP. It was a 3 Bay hopper. I also recently saw a SP GP60 #9768 (I think) w/out UP painted on it.

The beginnings of some tie work at Fort Drum, NY:

Other maintenance equipment also in the area. That's gotta be a climb to get into that cab...

2 BNSF (but still BN green and black) SD40-2's, one equipped with remote-control devices. (There was a crew in the cab, though.) They were #'s 6397 (the R-C equipped one), and 6926. They were switching the Galesburg, IL yard when I saw them.

Over the 4th, i went down to Arkansas to visit my family. i stopped in Malvern on July 3 to find a loco that did not belong. it was a Ohio Central SD40-2 #4023, first time i have seen one. it was coupled to a patched CNW SD40-2 #3043. i also got some shots of the Arkansas Midland locos at Jones Mill.

While on the way to work today I saw two NS engines. The first one had a number something like 2322, or 2232. I was driving on I-40 which goes over the railyard so I didn't have much time to see it. [:(]

That would be either an ex Conrail SW1500 or an ex Southern SW1500, I'm sure thats not what you saw though.

You are correct, they were not switchers. They were road units. There was a 3 somewhere in the numbers through and some 2s to boot.

Folkston, GA? You are (or were) in my old neck of the woods. I used to watch the trains bellowing through Jesup between 1989 and 1992. Every Christmas we drive U.S. 82 (which parallels the CSX line through Waycross) from Blackshear to Valdosta and beyond. Happy trainwatching!

Went last night over to Wisconsin Dells and railfanned the CP main line over there. It's the line that runs from Chicago to St. Paul. The first train we saw was a North Bound, with a former SOO line # 6611 heading up a mixed freight. About a half and hour later, we saw another North bound, this time with one nice CP, don't remember the number, with two SOO line Red and Whites behind it, heading up an auto train, with auto carriers and boxcars with parts. Another half an hour passed, and we saw a burlington Northern on the point, followed by a former CNW operation lifesaver engine, and then a BNSF executive paint scheme engine, the green ones wiht the cream stripes. This was heading up a coal train. I think this must have been a BNSF train using CP trackage, as it was completely Bethgon Coal porters, I would bet from the power plant in Portage WI, but I don't know for sure.
