Good Morning All
So Rob... Ya want rain buddy!!! Don't need a dance just hold a BBQ. Yep had excellent weather all trip we did. So I decided we'll have a BBQ for the crew and scientists on the way in and I was told we would have rain. I said "Nah, don't be so pessimistic". Ladies and Gentlemen... We have rain and more rain and lots of wind for when I tie up tomorrow morning. 40 kts out of the NW. right on to the dock and hopefully not through it.
Dick I'll be monitoring the weather hard today!
John: I thought as much and when I looked at the doors i put in last night and sized up the windows it didn't work for me. Saying that i have decided on portholes all around the tank at "eye" level. Thought of a deck on top of the tank for summertime dining but figured it would be lost on the clientel. It won't be an exact replica of the Sheet hbr establishment as I will use some poetic license.
Chuck: Hard to get into it when you have so much on your mind. Been there all too often this past year. And I suspect the Doctors are right. you will get use to the pacemaker. Afterall I can sleep through a Foghorn blasting away above my head, which is good for 5 miles. It's akin to selective hearing. something I'm reknown for!
Inch thank you for the Kudos!
Paul: I think when you put the kit together the angle of the bucket will be of little concern to you. It's a great looker and that's why I wanted a second one.

Morning, Zoe - cup of coffee to go, please.
Kind of bummed this morning. I won't go into all the gory details, but yesterday afternoon at w**k, got a list of intakes I am supposed to finish up (which means more paperw**k, and the list had several errors in it - including ones I know I've already done, but someone apparently lost it after I turned it in, etc.). Not sure if I'll have to w**k on those during the time I was planning on not doing any w**k on my vacation - other than the MRR'ing kind. 'Love' it how they drop this on me right before I'm to start vacation... Now trying to figure how to get this whole mess out of my mind to actually enjoy my vacation (assuming I actually get to take all the vacation time). (Sorry for the rant, folks)

Had a temp pacemaker inplanted on Aug 6 at 1:00 pm our time. Will keep it for one week to see if it will deaden some or all of the pain in whole body. So far 'tis hard to live with, can't sleep with it turned on at nite so I turn it off and take 150mg of morphene to sleep and am only getting about 4 hours. Dr says I will get used to it. Hope sooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I really miss talking to youall and hearing back.
Prayers to all in need. Love chuck and kathy
P.S. I will try to keep in contact

Good evening, dropped in for a quick rootbeer float before hitting the sack...still hot and very humid here.
CHEESE 4432: White water rafting...that brings back fun memories of rafting in Maine, once on the Kennebec and twice on the Penobscot (class 5). The Penobscot was quite a challenge, the first time over the biggest hydraulic we rode high on the crest and made it without flipping. Then the guide decided to have some fun and had us row into the hydraulic, which promptly flipped the raft. I was caught underneith the raft and the pounding waterfall, I thought I was going to drown. Everytime I came up for air the raft sent me under again. I was 58 when I did that, and decided I was tempting fate a little too much. Luckily, I swim very good under water, and was able to free myself, as the guide was too busy trying to free two of the women.
TRAIN STUFF: Headed for the LHS in Warren, Ma tomorrow, too hot to work outside, so that is a perfect excuse to head there. Of course we will stop to have lunch at the Steaming Tender ( former Palmer RR station )
Here are some pics of Palmer, the hotspot of New England on the former B&A Main line, now CSX and AMTRAK main line:

inch53: Thanks!
And to every one else the whitewater rafting was a blast! With good food to .
I'lll have filet minyo well done plewaase and a Ice cream sunday bar for all!.
Hello everybody, medium coffee please with two cream.
Just came back from a short vacation to Cape Breton Nova Scotia. The country was beautiful, the people very friendly and down to earth. My girlfriends uncle is a fisherman with a thirty five foot fishing boat. He took us for a ride in the ocean. The water looked beautiful so had to jump in. What a surprise for it was still very cold, unlike what it was like at the shore.
The uncle said that just outside of Glace Bay (a small village) two mine shafts are being re-opened by an Australian mining company. They are thinking of shipping the coal by rail to its future destinations. Finally, I thought that is music to my ears. Found an old abandoned road bed that at one time went within a few miles of the re-opened coal mine.
I think it is the worst thing to build houses and other buildings on old right of ways. Unfortunately it only happens all too often. Just a total lack of foresight, turn these old right of ways into hiking trails for everybody to enjoy and in the future it can still be revitalized to run trains.

A quick drop by this evening. I'll have something cool and celebratory! The good news is that the camera has also been recovered, undamaged, and with it's spare memory card and batteries! God is Good!!! (that's just because, it's only a Kodak C330, after all )
So, Paul, here's the picture of Lake Huron that I said way back in the Coffee Shop, that I'd send you. I've been able to get it out of the frame because it fell off the wall in the middle of the night - dried out over the years, and just fell! Sure gave us a moment there! The line in the water is the only damage, a glass scratch.
<>Garry: Here's as close as I can get to the Southern Mug you so crave.<> Took it this evening, but we've had the BC Museum mug from a garage sale for some years. At least the colours are close to Southern steam, aren't they?
Fergie. The "Tank" has no windows! I'll get photos as soon as I can to illustrate.
Luc: I've updated our churches' prayer chain with your news of Gloria.
Jeff: That bone deterioration and nerve thing sounds more than just a nuisance!
That's it, I'll get this off while I'm still awake. I've only finished page 275, so am a bit behind. Good night all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for Luc and Gloria, Jeff, and all in need of healing, comfort and peace.

***Dick, although I rarely see poisonous snakes here, in the 10 years I've lived here I have already seen more on our farm than the 20+ years growing up in AZ where I hiked and camped all over the Superstitions, Mazatzals, etc, swam in Canyon, Saguaro and other lakes, bicycled thousands of miles, ran hundreds of miles...you get the picture. (the desert gets a bad rap) Here in GA. it's the Copperhead I am concerned with, as they blend in so well and don't give warnings. Lost one dog to snake bite some years ago and our PD (Porch Dog) has a slightly askew jaw, as he took the second strike but survived.
Our well is somewhere a little over 300'. During rainy seasons we have several small springs that will seep/trickle out, but when the water table drops, they stop.
***Duke, that is EXACTLY what I was refering to. Have you ever been there? That's an operation I would like to view in person one day. What a challenge that would be to model, eh?
After cleaning the grime off the water pump, I went to empty the old and what looked like half water/half grey goo came out??? Also saw a little rust in the gas tank. Yikes, I am beginning to suspect a BIG (for me) purchase is going to be required. Haven't needed to pump from the big creek in about 7 years. Gurrr! (there goes any hope of getting a Kato AC4400CW or SD9043MAC, or even a Atlas GE B40-8W I have been drooling over anytime soon....wahhhhh)

Evening Gang: Last night I was too bummed out to say hello. Have you guys looked at Michael's post out in the main room? I almost cried when I read it. I'll tell you that couldn't have happened to a more deserving couple.
Sue I still haven't found out why the 2 portals on that end of the Snoqualmie tunnel. I did remember that it was the longest tunnel on the Milw Rd at 11,890 ft. I'll keep looking.
I'm watching the Blue Man Group on PBS as I'm writing this so if I get off course that's why.
Speaking of off course, Fergie how's it going? I'll have to do my steam shovel soon. I've been putting it off. There is one little fawpaw with the kit. The bucket should point slightly down at the cutting edge. I haven't looked at the kit to see if it would be a problem to change it but I'll try.
I worked down at the corral again today. I got the old corn hauled out and on the burn pile. When I lit it off it was like it was soaked in diesel fuel. While I was working I'd take breaks and hit the shade for a bit. I also took longer breaks and went to the house and sat and had a glass of water and a TV show or two. The only problem I had was when I was walking backwards dragging the last piece of black plastic to fold it up and tripped and fell backwards onto my back. My ankle still hurts a bit but it's not sprained or broke. Just my pride.
Duke those are great pics of the dock at Marquette's upper harbor.
Rob now you know why I'm so into the ore hauling thing. That boat is 730ft long, 75ft wide and 35 ft deep. It will carry around 30,000 long tons of ore.
By the way duke I saw on the boatnerd site that the Reserve is going to be converted to a barge. The Reserve is like the Beeghly in appearance.
Rob I'm sorry to hear that the creek stopped running. At least you have the big one to fall back on. It will be a hassle to have to run the pump.
Jeff: Good to hear that the meds are working.
Well this is getting long winded so I'll sign off.
Good Night All
Evening, I'll have a rib eye [rare], shrimp, a salad, n ice tea Cleo please.. Mother's gone selling jewelry tonight. Had 94 here in the woods and a nice hot breeze to help. Didn't even get a argument from the grandkids bout staying inside this afternoon in the AC.
Forecast for tomorrow, the same, just a bit warmer.
FERGIE,, like the 2-10-2's, look great.
COLBY,, great pics from vacation, that MMA B23 did it for me, haven't seen one of those in a while.
CHEESE,, good to hear from you again and congrads on the merit badges. The white water rafting sure sounds good here today.
DER, sorry to hear of the car thief, but it's good you got it back ok. Most the time their trashed, if found at all.
DICK, great pics of 7470,thanks for sharing them.
The tomatoes an green beans are bout all that's left in our garden now every thing else is bout done. I got a rig that goes in the water hose I put fertilizer in so it's applied while I'm watering with the sprinkler or I can use it with a fancy wand that has a shower head for flowers n such. Seems to work for 3 years now.
LUC,, still keeping Gloria n you in our thoughts. I'll not say anything bout the joke.
JEFF,, I've got bout the same thing in neck back an legs, no fun. Sure hope the new pills work for ya.
GMT,, been hoping Merle's song comes true, I sure do like Bubble Up.

Alco & Baldwin diesels in action on the railroads of Michigan's upper peninsula. Lots of u-boats & alligators. Cool video from small log loading job to off-loading ore trains at a dock (massive structure towering over large ship). Nice way to begin the day.

Good evening....the clouds are real heavy now, and from the radar we see that rain is about 4 hours away, and we need it.
JERRY: Glad you enjoyed the pics, and I "did" smell the smoke, lots of it up on that hillside as 7470 went by gathering speed.
ROB: Poisonous snakes??? I really am happy that we don't have that many around here. We do have Timber Rattlers, but they are very rare, and they don't get very big this far north. We also have water moccasins, so we do have be careful near water, but again, they are not very common either.....so much so, that in my 68 years living here in central MA, I have never seen either. How deep is your water table in the ground? If practical, have you considered an Artesian well?
Later,
***Jeffrey, glad you found something that works for you. That would be very frustrating.
Discovered today that our creek has completely stopped flowing and there are only small pools left. My immediate priority is to get the old gas pump working and prepare to start transferring water from the big creek which runs past the corner of our property, into metal troughs for all our horses. This will add much to my work load. Will need to bushhog the slope to the big creek so I can get to it without stepping on any poisonous snakes which congregate along the waters edge in times of drought. And the chance of rain for the foreseeable future is 0%-20%...YIKES! Oh well, that's Mother Nature.
Anyone know an effective rain dance I can try? Rob

Hi ya all!
I'll have some doughnuts muffins and a juice of some sort...you pick.
I need to clean my layout tble of grit and stuff get some ground powder and brown pint and start the scenery of germany, yes with the santa fe railroad.
Good afternoon to all.....man is it hot and sticky outside. I had to re-install the weather station this morning, that meant using a post hole digger to make a 36" deep hole to insert a 4x6x10' PT post. It was so hot that squirrels were bringing over their nuts to have me crack them open for them. One field mouse was actually spraying deoderant under his armpit.
J.R. : I was down your way on Saturday visiting my brother who lives in Wolcott, CT, exit 28 on I-84. 95F in Hartford at noontime.
Well, time to get back to w**k, need to get the weather station post assemby completed.
It's lunchtime at BDD and I'm hungry. I'll have the sirloin steak and fries, Zoe, with a LARGE Mt. Dew.

You're not making any friends there Sue, it's 95 here with heat index to 105 today. Pennsylvania is officially under a drought warning for the indefinate future. Nice pics of the rails to trails, btw. Like that false start on the one tunnel end. But is it prototypical?
Scott, contrats on the job with NS, sounds like you will be working around my neck of the woods. Get familiar with Enola Yard and the intermodal yards around Harrisburg.
Everyone else seems to be keeping busy as well. Hope those with health problems are better soon. And stay cool!
After drying, it looks like I need to do some touchup on the stockyards. So it will be yet another day before photos. I need to get one more fence post in before it starts raining. Ick. I did 3 posts yesterday by hand.
Philip, I love your scorcher pics. We could average our temps and we would both feel better.
Better go, Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.

Well, off to feed the critters. Have a great day all! Rob
Hello everyone......
Good news here. I went to my appointments at the cadiologist at Vanderbilt Heart Institute in Nashiville yesteday. The treatments are working very well for me and I'll be leading a close-to-normal life and feeling good indefinately. I had quite a time with my heart failure from 2002 through 2005; so it's good news. Part of the treatment is my implanted my Medtronic "Insync Maximo" which is a pacemaker with cadioverter defibrillator with cadiac resynchronization therapy. They never found out why the heart failure occurred but think it may have been a virus. My arteries, etc. are in great shape and I generally took care of myself over the years.
I just reviewed a lot of eventful and interesting psots here in the diner.
In particular, I saw Luc's posts regarding Gloria's situation. I would say that if her cardiologist suggests a pacemaker, she should not hestitate to go through with having one inplanted.
Fergie's photos of the 2-10-2's were outstanding.
The pictures of the old MILW line, now rail-to-trails, by Sue are reaally intersting.
And Dick's Pix of New Hampshire steam are really good, too.
Well, it's HOT here too. The car thermometer for outside said 102 F as we drove into Nashville Sunday.
Happy Model Railroading

Good morning to all........hot and steamy here in New England also guys, headed for 90's with Dew Points in the 70's. Looks like my CC is on fire again, breakfast is on me again this this morning guys, Jeff and Bill have already been here in the Diner, Jim,Mike, PC and Fergie too, where are the rest of you guys?
CAPE JIM: No, that wasn't telephoto shot. There were so many photographers there, that by the time I got from the "coming through the rock cut" shots to Crawford station, there was no place left to set up at the footbridge behind me. So I crawled down the sides of the banking above the tracks, got a good toe hold ( had my hiking shoes on ) , and set up shop.
MIKE: The midwest in Cape Jim's area is supposed to hit over 100 today, and cold air moving in will most certainly cause an outbreak of very severe weather, keep alert guys.
FERGIE: Rumor has it that Duke and Garry have bought all the 2-10-4's that they could find at the NMRR show in Detroit. Now that loco was a super hauler!! The 2-10-2's were sluggish haulers and tempermental, the 2-10-4 was a true super power steam engine. Just check out Madam Queen ( #5000 ) on the SF line.
DER JOHN: Hot enough for you in Sheet Harbour yet ?
TIFN
Morning all!
Yet another scorcher today! This guy is working overtime!
Temperatures will soar again into the mid-90's, and with dewpoints near 70, heat index values could exceed 105. We had a little rain overnight, but thats long gone now!
Basically, nothing under 90 for the next 5 days. It's going to feel like this for the next week or so........
Well, it looks like my daughters carb in her car is shot. I limped it home the other day and that puppy has had it! Got a rebuild kit for it for a mere $22, which I thought wasn't half bad compared to a rebuilt carb that was $500!!!! The whole car only cost her $150! Oh well, guess I have work to do!
Got a friend of mine stopping by this weekend. He's an N scaler like me and he want's to see my layout. This will be the first visitor to the Autumns Ridge since I started it. Suppose I should probably run the vacuum and empty the waste basket, huh?
I guess I ought to go do something useful with myself. I'll stop in later.
Bye!
Still out here off of Sable Is. doing science. Started to build my, Paul ready for this, second Jordan Kit Erie Steam Shovel! Built one and decided I need another. Second time through is a charm. I know I know where's the Pics? Soon grasshopper soon.
Dick Thanks for some more wonderful pics and I'd say by the cloud build up this morning we could be looking at Thunderstorms later today
And Scott Thanks for the kudos on the 2-10-2's Wonderful machines these are but a tad tempermental. saying that I plan on a bit more tweeking this winter and once I'm finished they will be one of my prime haulers of slow ore drags.
Got to love it!
Later All
Good Morning, Zoe - Let me have a cup of TH and one of Bill T.'s chocolate donuts, please. Thanks!
Sue, glad you noticed your favorite concrete in those. Will you be posting pics of your stockyard once you get done with the staining? I'd love to see them.
Dick, thanks for the additional photos of the Crawford station. Maybe you were a trifle close to the tracks on that banking? That last pic looked way too close (hopefully that was just due to a telephoto setting, right?).
Oh, trust me, Rob - August's weather is why it is my least favorite month! I'll be sure to keep the car A/C costs down enough that the MRR funds aren't too limited.
Mike, you got that weather right - I think they're talking about 99 F again today. Whew! Another day to stay indoor as much as possible.
So, JR - now that the train room and that W-bench are cleaned up, you can start on some projects and mess it up again, right?
Well, I'd best get going - got the W thing to do today. One more day of that, and then I'm on vacation for almost a week. (No wisecracks, all you ORF's out there... Some of you work more than those of us paying your Soc. Sec. checks).
Take care, and let's keep the going, especially for those in need of comfort, strengthening and/or peace.
Blessings on your week,
