LOL yeah the big 'wheels' are the Main engine throttles.  Small one is Astern Steam and the large one is Ahead Steam.

Reel to reel?  I think you might be dating yourself Jeff!  :)

Yeah, I'm 46. I've been working on computers since I was 22. I've seen many antique computers such as the Norman and a rebuilt UNIVAC. My first computer was an Osborne System 1, the first truely portable 'all-in-one-case' computer.

Well congratulations everyone!

2,813 views, 211 posts and 5 Star rating in only 72 hours!

That's 39 views every hour.  If this keeps up we will wear this diner out before 2008.  It's interesting that the posts and visits soared when the announcement came to close the old diner and with the announcement of opening a new place. Look at the new members we picked up and the old friends that wandered back in to see what was going on.

Well that had to be expected being new and along with it being a long holiday weekend we got bored sitting home staring at the 4 walls so we came here to chat a little with our great freinds that most haven't met some have but hope to meet at sometime.

I got 6 freight cars in today (been waiting scince the 13 of december) and got in a Coke Train set (new in box still has shrink wrap on it ) K-Line yeah I know you buy as is no warnety on it but still they did make some pretty good stuff.

I have a K-Line Hershey train set coming in with a alco A&B unit set in it from 1991 I believe and I had one before and wished I never got rid of it it was a great set and the engine was pretty strong that should be here in a couple of days along with 2 coca-cola boxcars and thats about all I have coming in thru ebay
I still haven't gotten my MTH Santa - Fe passenger cars in my local hobby shop said it could be tomorrow or it could be april he never knows with mth. Acually any of them wheather there in stock or over in china getting loaded onto a ship.

Same story with a Williams Virginian train set (remake of lionels virginian train set from the late 50's with the 2331 Train Master set set. )

I still have to pay for that one thou the rest is all paid for at this point.

My trains are still growing so I need to put the brakes on I guess for a while as need to try and get this room in order to start working on it (had it about there until huricane christmas came about lol)

Hey all. I'm back. I'm gone a week, and you up and move on me. Thanks for atleast leaving me a map. I really like the new digs? Thumbs Up [tup]Cool [8D]

Seriously, I lost my dial-up service and decided to wait to get AT&T/Yahoo DSL. Now I have it. Woohoo!, I've had a few probs with it, but it is faster.

NEWS BREAK: I have some really great news? My mom said "I could have the whole garage". That means I have a space of 19' 6" x 17' 9" for a layout, with a work room of about 10' x 6' (approx.). Not all of the layout space will be used. I have to make room for the backdoor in the house. More on this developing story later.

Happy New Year to everyone!!!

Until later,

Robert: That's great news on the layout space. Wish I had that much space! I wouldn't know what to do with it all.

Good Morning All,

Yes my New Years Resolution is: To put together all the buildings and stuff I have picked up over the last 30 years before spending any money on new stuff.

Robert, that's good news about the space.

Dekruif, I'm sure there will be more and better auctions on eBay.

Speaking of eBay I didn't have much luck this year on selling stuff, maybe 2007 will be better. Well after (almost) 2 weeks off work I'm heading back.  They should give you a half day on your first day back from leave, LOL.

Well to all your sellers I see ebay is going up again on there fees  its getting to be almost a every 6 months thing that there raising there fees. You would think (I've notice on my trains anyway) that items are selling for more lately that that would make them more money anyway with out the increase but guess there not getting there pockets full enough at the top . I've basicly have stoped selling on there because of that and have stop accepting paypal for that reason . I understand why people charge so much extra on S&H is to make up for ebay/paypal fees.

Morning all, back at the old job.  Egg. ham and cheese sammich if you will Zoe!

Jeff:  More rain?  Flash Floods?  Doesnt sound like a lot of fun.  To expand on your computer post a few pages back, I work at Army Research Labs up in Aberdeen, MD home of the original Arpanet and 2 of the worlds 13 root DNS servers!  We are in the process of upgrading all of our SMP servers to newer technology as the buying freeze has recently been lifted.  Some directorates were still running their Crays :)  We are outing a ton of SGI Origin 2000 & 3000's machines and replacing them with quad socket Opteron Boards with 880 series CPU's in em.  Since AMD plans to have their Quad Cores out this year, we are holding off buying all the server horsepower we need in favor the the 4x4 configs we can get off the quad cores.  Half the hardware density is a definete plus.  5 years ago I never would have imagined that one could get 16 4.0GHz cpus in the same volume as a standard desktop case... amazing!

Good Morning All,

26 F this morning but we should see the mid 50's and sun most of the day. Better than 40's and rain predicted a couple of days ago.

Lousy couple of days here. Tuesday I got the first prep of the year done and the client on his way to Sebring and Homestead for some early races. That was the high point. Tues eve and yesterday were the wake and services for my friends son. Ryan Handy was fifteen. He had been helping his dad run their vintage tire business out of Danville Va. though I'd know them since they were from Redding, the next town over. Christmas day Ryan didn't feel well and ended up going in hospital. The next day his systems shut down apparently from a massive infection and he passed away. Ryan was a bright, cheerful, hard working young man, an avid and talented guitar player and active in sports. For him to have been taken from us so young is tragic, for his parents and the rest of us who work at the track with our children the loss is incomprehensible. I hope it was some comfort to the parents Dave and Erika that members of the racing community outnumbered the family at least two to one with people driving four or more hours and coming from as far away as Michigan to support and console them. Not a good couple of days.

Time to pick up tools - I'll try to catch up with posts later, CUL,J.R.

Man i can't beleive the weather we have been having 48 and sunny today its 1-4-07 and its Wisconsin, we should be at 10 to -10 its going to cool for the weekend 30 that cool now? Then back up to the mid to upper 40's global warming ? We haven't had a winter for about 6 years now. Will i get to spend the day in the basement again, my wife gets to work she runs a day care here thats why i get so much done on the layout all the time, but i think she's getting a little on the jealous side. I get 6 weeks of Vac a year and she's lucky if she gets 2. Its kind of fun to rub it in alittle. Was up at 2am this morning went to Grand crossing

Good morning everyone.  A medium JR Regular and some scrambled eggs please Zoe. (Thanks Trainfreek) Slow work on the scenery last night, I’m into a section that requires thought, and that’s a major pain!

Dick:

I was watching one of Pentrex's DVD's on the 50KV rail-line that was built in the 80's in BC to the mining areas....
...I haven't seen them "in the flesh", we never got that far north.   I take it the power is from catenery, right? 50K is a lot of juice!

Lee:

Well I thought it was great to see and meet all these people.
…Well, I thought it was pretty fantastic too, but missed the stars thing, because I nearly always come in the back way (the door marked “Bookmark”, just watch for where Luc drops off the logs for the woodstove.)  Thanks for doing the number crunching.
Yes my New Years Resolution is: To put together all the buildings and stuff I have picked up over the last 30 years before spending any money on new stuff.
…Does that ever ring a bell.  One of the reasons I’m out of the gate running this year on the scenery is that it’s been sitting unchanging for well over 6 months. As for buildings, There’s way too many cardboard boxes and card mock ups…not a single finished building in the whole lot.  That’s my goal I guess, build, build, build.   <>

Robert:  Congrats on scoring the garage. That’s great news. Hope the budget comes in for those expansive plans!

RT:

I understand why people charge so much extra on S&H is to make up for ebay/paypal fees.
…I’ve given up on eBay.  The shipping charges killed any “bargains” there might have been for me.   <>

JR:  We’ll be praying for Dave and Erika , the Handy family and for you folks too. That is a terrible shock, especially at this time of year.  It’s good to see the support from their friends.Angel [angel]

Fargo and Jeff:

Hey, the weather's wierd all over.
…Yesterday all the Provincial Capitals in Canada were above freezing for daytime highs.  January 3rd., and not freezing…Alien [alien]

Derrick, care to tell us a bit about your mrr / railfan interests?

Got to go, TTFN.

How about a tall cup of coffee over here Chloe!

Stayed up late past midnight watching LSU beat up on ole Notre Dame. The Luck O the Irish just was not enough to keep LSU from racking up 41 points. And it was nice to see the Sugar Bowl back in New Orleans too.

Philip, nice looking pancakes, thanks for providing the breakfast special yesterday! Also, that Berkshire is now on display at the Steam town Museum in Pennsylvania

Jerry, I bet that was a fun trip riding with the NPR #759.

Der John, what the snow won't stick? NS should be covered with the white fluffy stuff by now, huh!

Dick, enjoying the balmy temps in January, eh!

Jeff, got any of that beef stew leftovers for us hungry folk over here in the corner stool?

Paul, hope you are feeling better soon. Chicken broth and crackers might make you feel better.

 LSWrr wrote:

The usual, loose weight, exercise, and eat right, drink plenty of fluids, and take Geritol! Just kidding on the Geritol part.

Dave, sounds like an interesting place to work. I currently work at the EPA National Computer Center here at the RTP in Durham, NC.

It is amazing how much processing power they can put into a CPU these days. Memory and drive space too is getting cheaper and cheaper every day. We went to Staples office supply the other day and next to the check out register is an impulse buy container full of small 40 MB USB thumb drives for $9.99 each. I just laughed and remembered my old 286 PC from 1991 with a whopping 40 MB hard drive, and I paid over $1,300 for that PC back then.

J.R., sorry to hear about your loss, that really is a tragic event. Our prayers and thoughts to you, your family, and the surviving families.

Lynda, what type of coding do you work on?
