(well, nothing’s a total failure, I guess, since the mess did have texture, but it wasn’t what I had in mind.)However, dirt sifted onto wet paint (I was using a general brownish latex on that layout) worked out not too badly. Dick will get on our case about sterilizing the dirt first, but I didn’t bother, and no harm resulted. I’d be careful not to gather dirt from an obviously toxic area however…and I didn’t try with white paint, but expect the water soluble material in any dirt would bleed off into the white. Looking forward to your photos.

Actually Mr Wood, I had read somewhere's a few years back about 'baking' the dirt to kill off any organisms, etc. So, one day back in 2004, I 'baked' myself some dirt for use on the layout. And since that is what I currently have sitting here in the apartment, that is what I will use. I'm going to experiment with 'Flat' Brown and a 'Flat' White, since it will get the dirt anyway.
Well all, off to Home Depot!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

Not really as I am just doing a reasonable facsimile as it will be marked in MESS markings and be called the "Musquodoboit 500 Class" btw it's pronounced muscadobut
The Oil Tender will have the deck cut open for the sound system and then built up with styrene and filled in with shiny large black ballast. The trailing truck has already been replaced with a more prototypical one (Bachmann K-4 type, bought 6 from Bachmann for $20!) and the cab has been replaced by a Kempton enclosed vestibule type. The CN version for this engine is a vertical front but the Kempton is slanted. Oh well it will just mean less wind resistance and more speed

Good morning everyone, colder here today as yet another Canadian cold air mass visited us last night, blew over the table on the deck with the umbrella in it of course...violent gusts of wind up here on the hilltop. I was going to burn brush today, but the scanner just announced that the fire danger is RED ZONE today due to dryness and especially the high winds. In fact, yesterday just north of us, on the former B&M tracks, a train set off a brush fire in Leominster, Ma.
Only 37F right now under dark blue skies, so when the winds aren't blowing, the late March sun will be warm in the sun.
I have been experimenting with "Glo in the dark" paint. I have a tripping hazard in the lower level of the house where you come up two steps from the former garage into the lower level rooms. This paint is supposed to "charge" from any light source, and glow in the dark. I painted the edges of the cement stairs to check it out. When I was stirring the paint, it was weird, the paint glowed a florescent green where the stick met the paint in the can...I hope it works.
LUC: That is real good news on Gloria, very happy to see her back home. It is amasing how even the little animals ( family cat in this instance) can sense human emotions and even their well being or sickness.
FERGIE: Glad to hear that things are finally settling down for you, a far cry from a months ago when not even the addition looked promising. Hopefully you will enjoy ( and your family) a great year of sun and no problems.
DER JOHN: WHAT????????? You didn't sterilize the soil??? That's it ....I'm calling OSHA, GREENPEACE, SAVE THE OWLS, SAVE THE WHALES, did I miss any? LOL
COLBY: What was your grade on your report? We accept nothing less that a "B" in the Diner, otherwise "you" pay for the next MONTH!!!
SCOTT: Watch out!!! She nearly hit you again in the parking lot !!!
DUKE: Mums the word (where is that darn laser level , hmmmmmmm, maybe under the bench )
Well, time to get moving, see you guys later
Diners: Snow this morning, and a bleak wind from the northwest. We have the woodstove back on. The weather may warm a bit tomorrow, but colder again for Saturday. At least some sun is forecast by then.
Luc: That’s great news about Gloria. PTL.
Der John - Are you still planning on going to the show on Sunday?
Fergie: Good to know Bob’s OK, and also that you’ve been able to get a bit of mrr amidst all the reno work. Would you say your dad’s conducting “sea trials” on the new apartment?
Garry:
Okay......... which is taller.......... der's mountain, gearjammer's mountain, or Jeff's sandwich ?
Time for coffee in the real world, and maybe some more ballasting today…that I couldn’t get at yesterday.
…later, good thing I had that coffee as my Netscape crashed 3 times while I had two sites opening at the same time (here, and photobucket)..it’s been doing that quite a bit recently, probably the war between MS and Netscape.
Actually Mr Wood,

Hope that medical thing with Sallie today goes well.

Good morning folks!
How about a grapefruit half, a tall glass of Ed's Special Fresh Squeezed and an English muffin... Chloe?
Okay! Now it's close to lunch time....so how about some Red Beans and Rice with smoked sausage!!!
Thanks for breakfast!
Had a bit of rain last night and poured again this morning on the work drive, we need the rain too!
We are planning on doing some flower gardening this weekend, and hitting the grass again too. Yard work is in full swing again!
Hey Lee, good luck with that one! LOL
Garry, actually the food here in WF is not that bad. There is just not enough fresh seafood around here that we were used to getting back in the Gulf region.
And as to your comment on the resume, that's just for the restaurant industry! I started work during summer months in between high school and college years for a tree service and lawn maintenance company. I started out in 1977 as a ground man on various tree crews, and worked my way up to a crew chief the next year. Then worked for a lawn maintenance company as a push mower operator, and then worked up to tractor mower operator the next year. I did this type of work through 1981. In college (LSU) I was in the Forestry and Wildlife program and I stopped working for a year and concentrated on studies, then I dropped out of LSU started back working again in 1983 with the culinary apprenticeship. Fast forward through the restaurant stuff..... And now in IT: in July 2000 to December 2001 I was a Technical Support Technician for Entergy Power Company with the SAIC contract. I worked at various nuclear power plants in Louisiana and Mississippi in the IT departments. Then I was offered the position as Technology Support with Emeril's Homebase. I supported all aspects of technology for the restaurants and home office of Emeril's empire. Hurricane Katrina resulted in my layoff from that dream job. I then worked for EDS with the Bell South contract for a few months in desk side support, and then we moved to North Carolina. Now I work as an Apprentice IT Analyst with the US-EPA located in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) in the Client Communications and Support group at the US-EPA's National Computer Center (NCC).
Duke, ORF huh! Well, I have a few more years left before I can say that about myself, I might be able to say OF for now, but not the "R" part for a long time....
Look forward to seeing you again weather it's in the spring, summer, or fall!

I was just watching the Weather Channel at noontime, more deadly Tornados down South, several deaths also. Texas, Oklahoma, SE Colorado, and more due this afternoon AND tomorrow. Wyoming is getting 58" of snow, so I neighbors in the NW are getting hammered also. I guess I'll take the sunny , chilly, 44F of Central NE.
Back to work over at son #3's house, see you guys at supper.
Chow time, I'll have a ham n cheese, ice tea, Zoe please,
Internets been down here, they got it fixed awhile ago, for how long ????
No kids today so I've been back outside again MOWING, mostly ,mulching leaves, but some of the grass needed it.
JP,, most the CSX main lines through here are purrty good shape. I know some of the secondary tracks need a lot of work. I know one of them N. of here has a 20 mph; limit on it, till some ties are replaced.
DER, I am running trains, several scale miles on the one main, when the kids are here, but that's bout it. I haven't gotten much of anything else done.
JERRY,, that lard kettle will hold bout 10# dry beans, 8 ham bones, and 8 big onions with no problem. Cooking time is 5 to 6 hours slow.
RYAN, we don't get up to Champagne/Urbana much, never really have a reason to it seems. And yes that's the ash beans.
DUKE,,, how big is that layout going to be?? Does looks good what progress you have made.
LUC,,, good to hear Gloria is home and doing betters.
Well the sandwich was good Zoe, but I need to get moving on yard w-k. Catch ya'll laters.

Afternoon all
Luc Real good news about Gloria
Inch The North ,South and West walls are all about 16ft but I do have a section on the North wall that juts another 4ft to the North and the East wall is about 21ft. You can see the section on the North where it is open (no backdrop).
Ok,here are the rest of what I have
Jerry The turntable is my attempt to make a pit turntable from the Atlas. I found a thread a while back on the forum that a person did it this way and then made my own little adjustments.
It isn't a very good pic but I do have some others I can post later as I have enough on this post right now.
Dick I will try to get a pic of my Hi-Tech level in here along the way.
That's about it
Talk to you later

Duke, looks real good. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
J-W will be dropping off a check Friday afternoon for $375.00 to cover the glass replacement. That was the cheapest I could find to cover the repairs. My lawyer and my insurance said 3 things to protect you from lawsuits on your property: No Solicitor, no tresspassing, and beware of dog signs posted near your doors. They look tacky, but I went out and bought them for my house. What has this world come to? Next thing I'll need to have my family sign a waiver for Sunday dinner, LOL.

Still nothing on the MRR front. Right now I don't have the get up and go.

Good evening, Chloe - cup of hot cocoa, please! And it looks like I'm covering dessert - and maybe breakfast, also!
Hoople, way to go on the grades! Patience is hard when a loco is on the way...
Colby, go after those A's & B's - they'll help you in school and down the road, too. And if they're in subjects you like, they'll likely come more easily, too.
Luc, give Gloria the TLC she needs and deserves as she's recuperating.
Duke, nice photos of your progress! Can you post more info on the turntable mod and how you do it (or is there a link online to the process)? You've been a very busy person on that benchwork - how much (if any) do you still have left to do on it?
Fergie, you do a pretty good amount of work on your engines, I'd say. (Wish I had your skills on locos! ) Didn't you have another engine you did some special work on back a while? Looking forward to seeing your progress soon, now that you are getting some MRR time in again. Good to hear Teffy's doing okay, even if we don't get to see him in much. Tell him Hi! for us.
Got to get to bed a bit earlier tonight to make up for the interruptions last night. I'll see everyone in the morning!

Mornin, I'll have the farmers special n coffee Zoe,
Got a 40% chance of rain later today, with highs in the 70's, and I'm ready for a day off from yard w-k.. Thinking maybe a half day to finish cleaning up the leaves n such.
COLBY, HOOPLE, and even PC, congrads on the A's there fellers, get all the schooling you can. In today's world you need it, there's not many good paying laborers jobs around anymore. I never did take ta book learnin very well. If I got a B, then mom n dad were happy.
DUKE, that is a big layout, wish I had that much room.
Need ta gets moving on chores, as bad as I hate to, sooner go play with trains today n resting up. Ya'll have a gooden one
Morning all!
Busy day today! Gotta solve my VPN issues, finish my schoolwork for the week, and wrap up all the projects that I've been working on all week (there's only about 2 bazillion of them). Piece of cake!
Hey, I finally got my turnouts delivered yesterday. I ordered them two weeks ago and I've been waiting ever since. Now maybe I can move forward on the layout! Still gotta get the backdrop painted on the backside though. It'll have to be done outside and the weather hasn't been cooperative lately. Oh well, what are ya gonna do, huh? It's springtime in Indiana! Monday looks like it might be the first good chance according to the weather guesser....................
Hey Chloe, like the new haircut there. Oh yeah, I'll have the biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and some scrambled eggs please. Yeah, Jim's got the bill for this one!
And thanks inch! I know what you mean though. My parents thought I could walk on water if I brought home a B in grade school!
So, what's going on in your neck of the woods?
Good morning!
I'll have a toaster strudel, some of Ed's fresh squeezed OJ and a tall cup a Joe!
Thanks Chloe!
Speaking of Ed, I got a PM from him yesterday on the Trainboards.com forum and he is off on another vacation adventure to the Cooper Mountains for two weeks. He told me to send you his best to the "Ole Guard" in the MR Coffee Shop. He said the orange grove had a banner year and will probably have another great season next time around.
Duke, you really are making time on the benchwork there! Looking Good!
Fergie, glad to see that you are still with us! Thanks for the updates!
Garry, I can say without a doubt that my life has had its share of experiences and adventures. Oh, I also forgot to mention that for the year after I dropped out of LSU in the period from 1982-1983 and before I started the culinary apprenticeship I was a sub-contractor doing work on residential interior and exterior renovations, painting, carpentry, and electrical and such.
Also, in the summer of 1983 I took a two month solo bicycle touring trip to New Mexico and Colorado, crossed the Continental Divide 7 times and rode over 1,300 miles. I flew into Albuquerque, NM and assembled the bicycle and then rode for two months. And during the trip I saw the Durango and Silverton RR in Durango, CO and the Cumbres and Toltec RR in Chama, NM. I ended up in Denver, CO and flew back to New Orleans. It was a real culture shock when I returned to the "Big Easy".
I tried flaxseed and it gets stuck between my teeth too much! Good source of something good for you, cannot remember, oh, I think it was anti-oxidants to help with preventing cancer or something like that with the Omega-3 fatty acids.
Philip, new TO's delivered eh! I see track laying in your future!
Looks like it's getting close to lunch time now!
Hi Gang: I'm early today. It's been raining off and on for the last couple of days. We really need the water so I'm hoping that it keeps up. My cold is much better. The doctor said that it may be allergies. Since I'm better so soon he may be right. Anyway I have a coff but it's not bad.
Since the rain is on and off I'm going to find somethings to do inside. I shoild get back out to the barn and continue cleaning up. There are feathers all over the second floor from a feather mattress that the dogs tore up. I've been vacuming them up. I may also get to the basement but it's hard to get in the mood without first tidying up some.
Well this isn't getting anything done so I'd better head on out. The bad thing about having the puter in the bed room is the bed keeps beckoning. I'see you all later.
Good afternoon everyone, bad day today....we thought that one of us had left the refrigerator door opened two days ago when the refrig section got warm, but then this morning we had the same problem. We have a side by side Maytag ( you know, the make that never breaks down? ) Ya right, this will make the 3rd episode since 2001, guess which make we will NOT ever buy again. The freezer side is fine, 0F, but the beer side is 60F!! The evaporator coils are free of ice, we defrosted them anyways just to be sure. There is a PC board in the refrig section that I highly suspect as being faulty, as it failed the same way the last time.....unfortunately, with sealed components, there isn't much I can do to repair the .... thing. So a repair man will be here at the earliest on Monday.
So how is everyone else's day going? I know that PAUL is feeling better from his head cold, and the working crew is very happy that it's late on a Friday so the end is in sight, the school guys are happy that the weekend is finally here. Meanwhile, I drink warm beer ugghhhh! Maybe I'll make some popsicles, the freezer section is working, lol.
Later guys,
Well this day is goning to "the birds" for some.
Jerry, can you save some of those droppings to weather the roof tops on the layout? It should look real. So how will be able to eat chicken after such an experience/
.......... and Paul.... he's cleaning up feathers today...... time to call "fowl"!
Ryan says he say lots of CO for 2 months on a bicycle. I admire that. It would take me two months just to get up the first grade in Colorado on a bicycle!
Luc........ Gloria still improving? Hope so.. .........and Trent, are you improving?. thinking of you.
All those students with the high grades............keep it up.........there are plenty of good jobs awaiting for those who continue improving themselves.
Happy Model Railroading..........
