The rust I'm trying for shows best on the blue rocks, and seems to have more yellows in it...it's hard to describe, and I haven't yet hit on the right look in test batches. It's not as red as your rust there, but I'd like to try doctoring up some of what you've used. As I said earlier, it's mainly on vertical surfaces where the rock has split, so you get blue rock showing on faces in one direction, and this rust on the faces at right angles to them, all on the same rock.BTW, I'm in Normal Scale. <>
Is this the rust color on the rock that you were refering to?

der, Maybe this one will be on me.
I was bad. I didn't write the order down. Tempera (black powder paint) was used first to give the rock defination. I used these colors in different orders, raw umber, burnt umber, raw sienna, burnt sienna and sometimes I used mixes with paynes gray.
Does the rust appear in the sun or in the shade? Different lichens grow in different conditions.
The photo is Mt Cruiser in the Olympic mountains I took it on one of my climbing trips.
Have a great evening. Sue

Mornin' All!
Morning Chloe! Just a light breakfast for me today, OK? Got any fresh fruit back in the kitchen? Yeah? OK, I'll have that!
Nice lookin' morning out there this morning. I here rain is coming late this afternoon and through the night, but thats OK. It's that time of year, isn't it? Looks good now though. Beautiful sunrise too!
A friend of mine has been hoping up my home computers for the last couple days. This guy is a wizard when it comes to this stuff. He's got my stuff just screaming! My wireless network that never worked at my house is working like I'd never dreamed. He's setting up a VPN for me too! It's pretty cool. And top it off, he told me that he's going to be selling one of his computers and wanted to know if I'd be interested in it. Seems he only want's $100 because it doesn't do much besides operate teaching programs (reading, writing, etc.), teach Bible programs, and surf the internet. I told him that my wife and I home school and that my son is struggling in those areas and he said that it's mine! God is so good! He put us together just at my point of need!
Well, I've got the work thing going on today. Got lots to do.
What's going on with you folks?
BTW, Sue, that rock color is right on! It looks like you nailed it!
Good morning everyone, a sunny day today, with temps headed for near 70F, it's about time!!It rained hard last night, and with the warmer temps, the snow is almost gone except for the piles at the end of the road. 4 large deer walked through the yard this morning, the winter snows have been so low that the deer are fat from have enough to eat.
DER JOHN: You are really doing an A1 job lad.........very impressive. Some of this warmer air is headed your way so get your garden tools ready John, and hurry up with the layout, you will soon have to spend your daytime hours OUTSIDE. LOL
RYAN: I sent you a website on UTube this morning, a 4 year old boy singing with the Hank Williams Jr. band. He plays the Accordian and sings one of your favorite Cajon tunes, Jambalaya. You should see and listen to this young lad, he is something else.
I can certainly feel your pain with your Chevy truck. My son has a 1996 GMC pickup that has had 3 transmissions ( they just kept failing, and they kept replacing ) and a rear end . Numerous other problems with starter, electrical, etc. I have always bought Ford trucks and never had a problem, well past 100K miles, even the old '72 F350 for hauling wood out of the woods out back in the hollow.
MIKE: Good day for photo shots on the RR's unless the younguns are headed over to the ranch.
Time to get going, see you guys at lunch
Good morning!
My breakfast......... whole grain grape nuts with apricots on top....w/ coffee. wonderful. just wonderful........ should I share some?
Dick, why could I find a house like that one upon retirement? .......... or why don't you buy it? Price is right? ........ well I'll just have to keep building the layout here. oh well.
Interesting convesration pertaining to rock scenery by der and sue. thanks....

Sue: Thanks for the night-cap, but I'd already gone to sleep! However, brunch is a whole different story....
So, you put wash on wash, while I make up different wash mixes, like my #3 Blue = Blue Haze x2 : Prar Blue x4: Rain Forest Green x2: Black x1.5 : Chocolate Brown x 0.5 . Then I mix only small amounts and apply to raw castings. The next rocks get a different wash number, or I make up the same, but of course the exact measurements vary, so the effect is always changing slightly, just as in nature.
The rust is just that, rust from iron in the ground water. Our lichens tend to the green /white with blacks mixed in. They grow in circular patters , or these merge to form larger patterns, but as far as I can remember, only in wel lit areas. There is another lichen that we get as well, that's the kind used by the scenery companies for trees. It has to be boiled with glycerin to make it supple, and then painted up etc. Getting the tree needles and leaves out is a pain as well.
Moss, well that's a whole other thing, and we have a rainy climate too! The forest floor here is covered in moss, which is why I've a green ground cover, not brown. I'll be dusting on fallen tree detrius (aka the sifted stuff from the bottom of the log basket, and the sweepings from the wood shed floor) before I plant the trees, but the green will be there, as it is all over the forest here.
Things to do. TTFN.

Good Morning!
Went to the Y last night and worked out on the Arc Trainer, man, that machine will knock you out! Got up to 110 reps/min and 30% resistance, wow, I feel it today! It is less impact than the treadmill though. I did sleep like a baby last night too!
Paul, "Wild Hogs" was great huh! We saw that a few weeks ago. William H. Macy is so funny with his pratfalls... "I'm okay, I'm alright"
Mike, great images of that defunct roundhouse, thanks for sharing once again. It is so nice to have you as our extended "eyes" in the field.
So you like to cook there Garry! I love that Dinner in the Diner cookbook, and I have made some of those recipes myself. Culinary history is great fun, and learning about the railroads old food service traditions is a great thrill. I was in the restaurant business for 18 years and now cooking is a hobby and not a profession, more fun that way.
Dick, yep get them grass cutters a ready, spring is moving up north faster than it did last year. Strange too since we had such a cooler winter; we had temps in the mid 80's this weekend and today supposed to get there again, whew!
And that house for sale with the garden railroad sounds like a great opportunity, but the wife and I have decided that we are not going to be moving again for a long time.
Oh, and Cajun music eh! We love to Cajun dance, and the Jambalaya song...
"Good-bye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh my oh Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.."
Hoople, now that is some bad luck on the Dodge Caravan. You certainly got me beat on that one!
RT, thanks for the offer, but I will pass on the Ranger. I have been looking at Toyota Tundra's for my next truck, but hope to wait until 2008....fingers crossed!
Der John, thanks for the compliment on the benchwork. Yes, DCC is the system and I have some Digitrax stationary decoders and circuit breakers to handle the reverse loop sections. Hey, your scenery is really taking shape there, great job!
Sue, the rock formations look great!

Been out working in the yard since early this morning, but I'm done with that for now, hurtin bad enough, darn aurther.
No kids todays, even thought about taking Dick suggestion on the rail fanning. But, yard work won. May get some in this evening before dark.
GARRY, I think most us guys on here cook some, I do. I do most my cookin outside though, you'll have ta slip up this way with your camping gear for one of our feeds at campground A. If I remmeber right, we're 4 hours N. of Paduca.
Dick, almost makes me cry to see it like that. I can remember when the coaling tower was still standing. They knock it down in the early 70's, I think.
Think I'll have to pass on the house and G scale. A whole lot of, out of my price range.
Hey RT, good to hear from ya, and the progress on your room.
DER, rock work looks great, wish I was anywhere close to that far along.
SUE, your rock work looks great too.
Glad ya'll liked the round house pics, I'm glad I got'em, don't know how much longer it'll be there.

Haven't done much on my plans to expand the layout while all the other stuff is going on. I'm keeping my two new Atlas geeps busy when I operate though. Nothing like new power on the layout!
Ahhh all most supper time guys. What a beautiful day today was, hit 61 here, so I got outside and did some cleanup and some brush cutting. Tonight I will settle in to do some MRR stuff.
MIKE: Ya, for us retired people, you, me Garry, etc it's a little steep, but I'm pretty well settled in here, too much invested to move, and I like the hilly country rather than near the big city.
PC: WOW, that is really a stroke of good fortune....God works in mysterious ways.
RYAN: That young man is quite a musician isn't he??? A lot of talent for such a young man. Is the truck running better???
GARRY: Are you sure you don't want that nice Garden RR ?? All ready working? Sell your ranch and move north young man !!! LOL
I hear hear the supper bell, so we shall take leave of the Diner and see you fine folks later,

*sigh* hey guys...
I did the most boneheaded thing today. I deleted my health project that was due and now I have to start form scratch. Now I got my parents yelling at me because of it. I'm listening to my mp3 player to keep me calm and not lose my nerve and start crying. I hate it when this happens...
Colby
COLBY: That is really a bummer. I made that mistake once a long time ago, and I never did that again. Here is what works for me Colby: I open my document, it can be xcel or Word, or Power Point, the same holds true here, and I give it name and call it the Master Copy. I immediately open another document and call it the Working Copy.
I use the working copy to do my drafts. I save the work CONSTANTLY. You DO NOT, and SHOULD NOT wait until you are all done for that session to save the work. It is so easy to hit the "save" icon, so do it often. Now when you are finished with the "working copy" for the session, save it to the "Master Copy".
If you follow these steps Colby, you will never have that problem again......
The reason mom and dad are so upset? Because they figure that you were either distracted by music, or, MRR forum. How do I know this miles away? I raised FOUR (4) teenagers at the SAME time. 13, 14, 18, 19 back in the early 80's. I know every trick Colby, even the new ones from my 9 Grandkids, 3 in High School.
Have you looked in the TRASH bucket on your system to see if it can be retrieved?
COLBY!- Hey man thats rough but hang in there! Those things happen but I know that this new one will be better than the old one!
Hi all!
Went to the Dr. yesterday and they made me have a full work-up today. Found out why I get so winded & my weight isn't it though I could stand to loose 10 more. I have a condition on my heart that when I put a lot of strain on my heart the lower part that has the point looses blood or is restricted which causes a heart attack like situation. When I stop and rest it reverses its self and all returns to normal. They are gonna run me through the whole mess again like they did 2yrs ago. If I'd just had a reg. check up like I was supposed to then this would not be going on,! Everyone has weighed in some form or another all with the "We told you to go and take care of it etc...!"
So let this be a lesson to ya.
See Cloby we all pull the old bonehead trick, even us "older" folk who SHOULD know better.
My wife is mad and keeps saying its her fault for not taking better care of me. Told her that I'm a big boy and nobody held a gun to my head making me drink all those sodas. (3-5 a day) I also told her that she does just fine. It IS hard when the kids eat chips & dip as well as sweets. Kelly is putting the whole house on a "diet" when it comes to eating healthy and she and I are on a serious diet now sa its easier for two than one.
BTW- Love those pics, Sue of the Mtns. I'm glad to see those pics of the repaired cruise-mobile as well.
Thanks again for all the prayers and emails they do help alot!
My thoughts and prayers are with you all always.
Trent
Hello everybody.........
Inch..........I bet nobody starved there last May. Never saw such a big pot of beans! You're quite a distance from Starved Rock, obviously.
Gray Fox....... I think I'll hold off on Garden Railroads. HO takes enough time with chasing Kadee springs across the room to who know where.......... or now all those little wire grabs on Walthers cars ....... but overall, HO is the best option for me.
Ryan. ..... I'd enjoy hearing more about restaurant biz from you. Dinner in The Diner is quite a book. I do other cooking to when it's my turn.
Trent...... sorry to learn of your heart condition. I can assure you that the good doctors now-a-days know what to do. How do I know? I'll disclose I'm a heart patient at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN. I'll be there again early next week. Routine tests this time. I've had 3 heart surgeries there (2003, 2004, and 2005). I'll be okay. You, too, will be okay, trent. You too.

Thanks guys for the encouragement on the rocks. That was actually part of my first rock project. I am hoping that it will get easier as I continue. Larry painted the my last rock because I was having a fit of impatience. I am sure that most of you hit a block from time to time.
This is Larry's paint job.
My latest project was painting ties, rusting rails, and I just finished ballasting a section that will lead into a tunnel. Maybe I will get some ground goop going on Thursday.

Last call for coffee guys....
TRENT: At least you know the reason why now, and this should be treatable. As for doing what you are supposed to do ( annual exams, etc. ), after my bout with Prostate cancer back in '03, I tried to tell all the men to get annual check ups and to make sure that they get their PSA test done. It is painless, one silly little vile of blood from your arm that takes 1 minute. It is very treatable form of cancer, but many men are so damn stubborn, they won't go to a doctor to get checked. I have been going for annual checkups since age 40, and I am alive today because I "did".
So Trent, stay on top of this buddy, do as the doctor says and get those tests done buddy.
SUE: You are doing a super job. Between you and John the rest of us are getting an uplift.

Union: CSX had crew stay at wreck
Replacement engineer and conductor told to remain while others evacuated site.
Saturday, March 24, 2007
By Aaron Gifford
Staff writer
CSX ordered an engineer and conductor to remain on a burning freight train in Oneida March 12 just two hours after it derailed and caught fire, even though residents within a one-mile radius of the scene were evacuated and firefighters stayed a safe distance away, a union official said Friday.
The crew, which replaced the engineer and conductor who fled after the wreck, was told to stay in the engine should it need to be moved, said Robert Evans of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.
He said CSX managers drove the engineer and conductor from East Syracuse to the scene some time before 10 a.m. They went past police roadblocks set up to keep people away from the burning cars of propane and toluene.
"Walking up to the engine, they could feel the heat (from the fire) on their faces," Evans said, adding that the pair remained there for about eight hours. "They knew they would be fired if they didn't do it."
According to Evans, the engine was between 1,200 feet and 1,400 feet from the site of the explosion and subsequent fire. Oneida firefighters who first responded to the scene remained at least 1,500 feet away from the burning tankers, said fire Chief Don Hudson.
Robert Sullivan, CSX spokesman, estimates that the crew was dispatched about four hours after the derailment, though specific times were not available Friday. The train derailed shortly after 7 a.m.
"Everything was done with an unyielding eye for their (the crew's) safety," Sullivan said. "It's an acceptable procedure.
As soon as you can safely do it, you remove the cars that were not involved. We would not compromise the safety of our employees."
The engineer contacted the union last weekend. He asked Evans to not identify him in media reports. Both the engineer and conductor are union members.
"I was totally (shocked) when he told me," said Evans, an engineer with more than 30 years of experience.
The engineer and conductor were told by the company there was no danger of other cars exploding, according to Evans.
City firefighters, however, were not sure until about noon that day that the propane cars had properly vented and were not in danger of rupturing, which would have caused a major explosion much larger than the fire balls that followed the wreck, Hudson said.
Oneida residents who lived within a mile of the scene were evacuated after firefighters were informed that liquid propane was on the train. The fire department ultimately decided to let the fire burn itself out.
The engineer told his union representative that he was to be relieved, but nobody was sent because fire apparatus was moving into the area around the derailment, Evans said.
Evans has sent letters with his concerns to the company's vice president in charge of safety as well as to the Federal Railroad Administration, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll.
"I really question the wisdom" of having the employees on the engine while the fire raged, Evans said.
"We don't ever want to see this happen to our guys again," he said.
The Federal Railroad Administration referred comment to the National Transportation Safety Board. NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway declined comment.

And in today's paper is this article on the inspection....
Federal officials: CSX lax
Inspectors found 3,518 safety defects in N.Y., 22 other states.
Wednesday, March 28, 2007
By Mark Weiner
Washington bureau
Federal rail safety inspectors Tuesday admonished the Northeast's largest railroad for failing to do enough to correct safety problems and threatened civil penalties against the company.
The Federal Railroad Administration found 3,518 safety defects during a four-day inspection in January of CSX Transportation's operations in 23 states.
Of those defects, inspectors said 199 involved serious cases of noncompliance where the federal government would seek civil penalties against CSX Transportation. Thirteen of the cases are in New York state.
The inspection was begun after a derailment near Rochester in January. Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Boardman promised to publicly release SEN.
the results of that inspection after a CSX freight train derailed and exploded in Oneida on March 12.
The Oneida explosion, which produced a fireball visible from miles away, was the latest in a string of accidents involving CSX trains in Upstate New York. Nobody was hurt in the Oneida accident.
The Oneida incident was the fifth serious accident in Upstate New York since December, according to the inspection report. In the most serious case, a CSX worker was killed Dec. 14 when he was struck and killed by a train at the DeWitt rail yard.
Boardman said Tuesday the federal inspection found a wide range of safety problems that have gone unaddressed by CSX.
"The results released today of an FRA focused inspection demonstrate that despite general improvement by CSX, the railroad is still not doing enough to make safety a top priority," Boardman said in a statement.
"Indeed, our FRA inspectors identified problems in every area of the company's safety performance, including track, hazardous materials and on-track equipment," Boardman said.
He added, "The recommendation to assess 199 safety violations against CSX will be taken seriously as the federal investigation into the railroad's safety program continues."
Steve Kulm, an FRA spokesman in Washington, D.C., said he could not disclose the locations of the 13 serious safety violations in New York until the civil penalties are assessed.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who called for congressional hearings into CSX and its safety problems after the explosion and derailment in Oneida, said the report only makes him more concerned about the railroad.
"This scathing report confirms our worst fears about CSX's safety record in Upstate New York and across the country," Schumer said.
"It is not a coincidence or just bad luck that there has been a rash of accidents and near misses," the senator said. "CSX is simply not putting the energy, effort and resources into safety. This must change immediately."
Schumer has proposed setting bigger fines for fatal accidents involving railroad companies as part of the Rail Crossing and Hazardous Materials Transport Act. The bill, which has bipartisan support, also would require the use of new safety technology.
Robert Sullivan, a CSX spokesman in Philadelphia, said the company could not comment on specifics of the federal report because it had not fully reviewed the findings. Sullivan said safety remains a top priority at CSX, and noted the company had a 24 percent reduction in train accidents last year.
The Federal Railroad Administration began its inspection of CSX properties after a derailment Jan. 16 in East Rochester sent freight trains toppling from an overpass and into the front yards of homes below.
Rep. Michael Arcuri, D-Utica, said the federal report makes it clear CSX has real problems with its freight moving through Central New York.
"I happen to be a strong believer and supporter of railroads and the railroad industry," Arcuri said Tuesday. "But we need more than just lip service from the private railroad companies. We need real safety. We can't have companies with 199 safety violations. That's just not acceptable. We have to do everything we can to improve safety on our tracks."
Schumer has suggested CSX's problems might be related to infrastructure.
Sullivan, the CSX spokesman, said the company invests about $1 billion per year to maintain and improve its track and related infrastructure. He said the company installed more than 400 miles of new rail last year. CSX has more than 1,300 miles of rail in New York state.

folks: I’m doing the part of scenery that I really don’t like…ballasting track. So I need a large JR Regular to steady my hand! Why I don’t like it is partly because the ballast keeps falling away from the slope of the track bed, and also gets washed out from the track bed when the glue is eye-droppered on. I’m using Arizona Rock and Mineral’s N scale natural rock, which is pretty fine. BTW, Fergie’s tip of adding black to the wetting water does work very well indeed to instantly weather the ballast. Mine is the light colour being used, so AR&M says by SP in the Southwest. NS’s Wabash section also has it, so they say.
Dick:
get your garden tools ready John, and hurry up with the layout, you will soon have to spend your daytime hours OUTSIDE. LOL
Mike: wish I was anywhere close to that far along …but then you probably are able to run trains. It’s been so long since I did that, with all this scenery work that I’ll have to do a major clean of the track again before I can turn a wheel. I did test a section of track down by the wharf a week or two ago once I’d re-soldered a track connection, having shortened the stub spur to shoe horn in a road, but that’s about all.
wish I was anywhere close to that far along
Ryan: Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou…Thanks for clearing that up, I’ve never seen it in print, and couldn’t quite catch the word.
Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou
Sue: Larry’s a dab hand at those rocks too! What goes on the blank area behind the tunnel mouth rocks? Getting trees on right away is a great idea. My ready-mades from the Alberta layout are still in storage in the attic. That will be a big blitz eventually, but I want to cover up more blue foam before taking time to make trees.
PC: Dick - It would not surprise me one bit if they are PINK!…Lest we forget, the pink isn’t Fergie’s idea, the pink loco was sent him by Teffy. Anyone heard how Bob’s doing BTW?
Sounds like CSX shares some characteristics with CN when it comes to derailments and related difficulties.
Have to wet down and glue the ballast on the doorway module.
