Mornin' y'all. Cowboy [C):-)]

I'll take a cup of coffee please Chloe, black is fine.

Senior Dinner Cruise last night wasn't bad...Would've been better if my girl could've come along...But oh well, stuff happens...

Luct: You have my prayers, for both you and Gloria.

It's so good to have my car back. They did an excellent job on the repairs. The shop I took it to had great service. I'm very happy with it.

Yeah, what Jeff said, Scott. Smile [:)] Thumbs Up [tup] I'd agree with Inch, too - looks like they did a very good job on the Scottmobile! Did I dream it, or had you at some point had (or been thinking about) a set of longhorn horns on the front bumper? Cowboy [C):-)]Nah, I probably dreamed that one. Jim in CG: After taking those pictures on my friend's farm...I'm considering them more than ever now. I definitely want to get a boomerang antenna for the trunk lid, so I could possibly make it even with a set of longhorns on the front...It's still a possibility.Cool [8D]

Dick: Tell me about it...I take a whole different route in the parking lot to avoid 'running in' to that certain driver...

Cox47: If I'm not mistaken...It is Currant Red. Dark Toreador Red is a similar color. And y'all can call me Tex if you want. Thumbs Up [tup]

PC: The frame on the front fell apart over the winter. The wire tires got brittle in the cold, and I accidently snapped the spikes off trying to reposition them. I'm going to make a new set with all-weather epoxy. I blacked the chrome out in late November. I need to finish the Black Out...The tails need to be painted.

Ya know...I just don't get this...I normally wear my hat and coat (got the spurs too), but seems like everyone loves to taunt me. People'll start yelling out stupid comments or something...Kinda annoying...You'd think that they'd never seen a cowboy hat before.

I'm out y'all, catch ya later. Cowboy [C):-)]

Good morning, All.

This is one of my latest scratch building efforts.

Cape Jim,  I am sorry if I was not clear. The $100 was not for the seminar, but if you purchased that much product he gave us the video.    The seminar was free at the train show.  A starter kit and a few molds pushed us over the limit.  I think that the rock materials will be enough for the entire layout.  We purchased some more foam for the hard shell at the show in Portland.  The website is www.bragdonent.com.   Check last weekend's photo fun to see the hard shell.

der,  The rust color on the rocks here is a type of lichen.  We have it in rust and gray.

Hoople,   Congrats on the 2-8-0.

Garry,  You should be able to find flax in any health food store.

Thanks a lot for your concerns, I've passed them on to Gloria.  The specialist was in to see her this a.m.  She has many clots in her lungs and bronchial pneumonia.  She's also somehow managed to pinch a nerve in her left hip (very painful).

She is being treated with anti-biotics injections and high dosages of blood thiner.  Her blood is being tested every 4 hours and she's being x-rayed daily until major improvements show up.

It sounds like she'll be in the hospital for a while.

I'll keep you all posted as often as I can and thanks again from the 2 of us for your kind supporting words.

Happy MRRing.

Good afternoon, Chloe - Jerry got my mouth watering, talking about that pork burger. But I think I'll have some ribs from one of those sides you were grilling out back - I could smell it from a half mile away! Dinner [dinner]

Yeah!! [yeah] - that, and a tall ice cream soda should work fine. Yum! Sue, if I hadn't already had breakfast before I got in here, I'd have had some of those waffles. Look might tasty, all right. You keep up with that scratchbuilding - I'll check in the morning before I head out for work and see how you're doing on those. Wink [;)] Thanks for clearing my muddled mind up on the 'seminar'. I hadn't realized you were talking one on video/DVD. I'll go check out your pics after I post in here. So, Sue - how do you like Bragdon's molds/kits so far?

Luc, good to hear the doctors are keeping very close tabs on Glo. Let her know to cooperate with the doctors and nurses and take her medicines, too. And give her a hug or two from the crew in the Diner, too (if the doctors say it's okay - if not, just give her a little hug when they're not looking).

Garry, I've heard some good reports on the strawberry-rhubarb pie that Dick's wife Loraine makes. (I might have that misspelled) Come to think of it, the report I heard, was from DukeDick (and I think said there wasn't much pie left, after Duke and his wife visited them a while back). Wink [;)] I might even had heard that Duke's wife made him push his bike for a mile or two, to burn off some of the extra pie that he ate... Evil [}:)] ...well, maybe I could be wrong on that last part. Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Laugh [(-D]

Don't worry about my eating up all the ribs, though - Chloe showed me another side of ribs that'll be coming off the BBQ pretty soon now.

So just tell her how many you want on your plate, folks!

I haven't got much w**k done on the layout stuff this afternoon (except pull out a freight station kit and check the parts on it a bit earlier). Warm afternoon - about 82 (F). I had the door to the deck open (except for the screen door part), and two different times, a wasp or mud dauber came flying in. First one I trapped between the screen and glass window, and the second one I got and squashed near the door as it was on the way out and got caught. Last couple of summers I had to every so often break off/down some wasp/dauber nest they were trying to build on the metal strip around the deck door (outside). Dang pesky varmits!

Let's see if I can get something more directly related to the layout accomplished today.

Prayers for Gloria and Luc and any others in need of them. I think I'm gonna take up PC's suggestion and convert one of my DPM buildings into a doctor's office on the layout!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good evening everyone, I hope that everyone had a peaceful, quiet, Sunday to thank God for what we all have, especially in the Diner....the best of friends!

We received a surprise overnight, we awoke to a Winter wonderland. 4" of heavy wet snow turned the landscape into a Currier & Ives scene with all the evergreen trees and bushes hangong with snow. By noontime all the snow had melted, and we have 60's due here by Tuesday. As they say in New England, if you don't like the weather, just wait a while.

LUC: That is hopeful news concerning Gloria......many prayers for her recovery Luc.

GARRY: Surprisingly, there are little towns in 5 States called Cherry Valley, and even one in Ontario, Canada!!!  Actually, we are not a town, but a section of a town called Leicester ( pronounced Lester, named after Leicester, England by the original land grantees.) We are in the eastern part of the town, just off route 9, and the Mass Pike (I-90, the very same I-90 that runs cross country to Washington, and right through Cherry Valley, Illinois ) is just 2 miles south of us.

MIKE: Yup, I have you bracketed, I see the town of Martinsville, Illinois, just south of I-70, and highway 40. If I use Google maps, and go to Satellite View, I can pinpoint your house. What street to live on? Wave to me tomorrow ( if the sun is out) as the Satellite passes overhead.

JIM: We planted 100 new strawberry plants last Fall just to keep up with the demand for SR pie!!!! It seems that Duke has really done a great job in the Marketing Department, now we can't keep up with demand!!!!!!

Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good Evening All,

Luc - you and Gloria are in our prayers. Sorry to hear she's in hospital.

Der - the plaster was put on bare then carved, then stained using an acrylic wash so it soaks in. Usually I add color to the plaster, but I was too idle this time. I like the look of the colored plaster better than the stain.

Dick - Lestershire is very familiar to most of the Brits i've worked with as they all seem to hail from there. Our fabricator is in fact from Leicester proper as is my old crew chief from Bob Akins.

Sue - ok so what scale were those waffles?

Scott - the car came out well. Kudos to the painter and your perservence.

Cars are loaded and trailer are ready to leave tomorrow morning. It was nice today the snow on the ground is mostly gone as the snow we were supposed to get hit Dick instead.

Inch - Is the round house still used at all? We'd give our eye teeth here for one like it or even smaller. Both the round house and back shop in Danbury were torn down by Penn Central in the late sixties as they were too idle to keep them up or secure.  Between MacInnes and PC it's a wonder anything around here survived at all.

Did get some time in tonight tidying up and running some drops for the new sidings to tie to the buss wires later. Long day tomorrow so I gotta go.Proably won't log in for another week or so. CULBig Smile [:D]J.R.

Evening Gang: Thanks Jim for taking the page. Even with vertual money it gets expensive.

Not much going on today. We went to see Wild Hogs tonight. That is one funny movie. It had us laughing out loud several times.

Yesterday while I was working on the fence at the railroad a set of 3 locomotives went by. The 3rd locomotive was the presidents. Unfortunately I didn't get a good look because of the trees, jus enough to id it. Of course no camera.

Well Mary Ann just said that we need to get up early tomorrow so I'll say Good Night All.

Good morning.  Oatmeal again.   Terrific.

I've been wondering what it's like to be in Cherry Valley. Did they send the remains of the eaten cherries to Pennsylvania?   That's why they named a town "Pittsburgh"?  (it's a joke. get it? pits?........  oh, never mind).

Diclosure:     I actually do some of the cooking here. (shhhh. don't tell) In addition to manning the BBQ grill, I (beleive it or not) make stuff using recipes.  Sometimes, just for added fun, I use recipes from an old book entitled, "Dinner in the Diner".  Good stuff.  Of course, some recipes need downsizing.  We never serve 45 people at once. One that comes to mind is Illlinois Central's Baked Deviled Crab Meat.  It's a bit New Orleans style cooking, and not bad. For beef eaters, the Santa Fe's Roulade of Beef is just  incredible.  For dessert, SP's french apple pie is good, but it may be outclassed by the stawberry ruubarb pie mentioned earlier in this thread.

Well, time to hustle my caboose.

Happy Model Railroading!

Good morning everyone, a cloudy day so far, 39.2F, and rain scheduled for later this afternoon, however, the snow took a big hit overnight as the temps never went below 32. By the end of this week, all the snow should be history....BUT, the weatherforecasters are "hinting" about a big rainstorm changing to SNOW...April 1st!!??? Say it isn't so!! Not another April Fool's Day big storm like a couple of years ago that dumped 34" of snow.

Today, I really have to get my butt in gear and get the darn taxes done. Then, I am going to check out the swing-out idea for the train layout gate to the walk isle. I know that the hinge on left will only allow the gate to swing 90 degrees because of a storage cabinet. The hinge on the right might allow for a great arc, so we have to do some measurements.

GARRY: I like that, send the Cherry pits to PA, then that town becomes Pittsburg in 1723...nice !!!! Actually, no one really knows how this little village received it's name. I could see it being named "Strawberry" Valley because it even had a hill called Strawberry Hill because of all the wild strawberries that the settlers found here. Maybe it had a lot of wild Cherry trees here too, I know I find them in the woods all the time. We may never know. We did have a man named Cary who was the 1st white settler, dating back to 1600's that had quite a story. It seems that when the 1st settlers appeared here, they found out from the native Americans that there was already a white man living here. He was living in a cave on a hill near what is now the center of town, and now called "Cary Hill" of course. It turns out he was a pirate who hid inland with quite a hoard of gold and silver. He left for Boston one day and returned with new cloths fit for a king and a gold studded cane, spent a few days here and then disappeared again never to be seen again.

MIKE: I will check that out, don't forget to wave. BTW, those were great pics. It must really bring a tear to the eye of any old steam engineer still alive who visits the old turntable and house, just to see it fading into history, and the memories of days of yesterday and a life that will never return.

Good morning.

JR,  What scale? Hmmmmm.Confused [%-)]Confused [%-)]

Cape Jim,  The Bragdon molds are so realistic.  We bought two small and one large, hoping that we would arrange the rock to not look duplicated.  The hard shell allows the layout to be hollow.  We have cut outs in the benchwork and can reach up to clean the track in the tunnels.  Also, you can change the contour as it sets.  You have 30 minutes to play with the shape.

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone is doing well these days. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all in need.

Auto troubles again!

I was driving into work Thursday morning and only about a mile from home when I heard a loud "pop" and then I lost most of the acceleration in the Chevy S10. Turned around and went back home and was only able to go up to 20 MPH. Turns out that the muffler pipe connection to the engine cracked. Had to have it towed to the shop on Friday morning, they determined the issue and said they cannot weld parts, so I had to have it towed to another repair shop. Spent most of the day Friday getting my truck towed all over town. They got it all fixed up on Saturday morning, first tried to weld the original pipe but could not stick. So a new pipe worked just fine, now $216.00 later and I am driving again. I was so ready to throw in the towel on the S10, third time in the past 8 months I have had problems with it. So, one more chance and I am going to have to seriously look into getting a new truck. Bad news is it is only 7 ½ years old and has only 82,500 miles on it, I was hoping for at least another 3 years and getting up to 120,000 miles. Oh well!

...and on the modeling front....

In between all the phone calls with AAA and the repair shops and lining up the tow trucks on Friday I got about 6 hours of work done on the layout. I cut the final sub-roadbed 3/4" plywood for the lower deck of the layout and attached three sections to the benchwork. I attached the wye - roundtable - roundhouse section and the passenger station section to the benchwork. Just have the main line reverse loop section to attach and then all the lower deck benchwork is DONE!!!! Yea!!!!

Then all I have to do is add the roadbed, track, and wire it all up!

What else we did this weekend....

Monique acquired some tickets from a client at work and so Ben and I got to attend the Hurricanes hockey game on Thursday night, they won the game so that was a fun treat.

Hit the yard and mowed the lawn for the first time this growing season. Yes folks, the grass and weeds are starting to grow again, spring has sprung in this neck of the woods!

Saturday Monique and I helped a friend move from his apartment to a new house he just bought. The apartment was on the second floor, must have walked up and down those winding stairs about 30 + times. Ouch! Muscles are really sore....

Ben and I played some racquetball on Sunday at the Y, we are finally at a point where we can actually play a fairly decent game. Great exercise too and it is so fun!

One of Ben's friends visited us last night and brought the DVD Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Funny movie!

You all have a great day!

Cheers,

Ryan

Good evening to all, the rains have started, and RI is getting a heavy TS, hard to belive with temps here only 39F, 42F in RI, but the atmosphere is very unstable south of us.

A DEAL:  Ok Diner patrons, anyone thinking of moving to New England? Well here is a deal for you. It was shown on the 10pm news last night. A nice ranch style home in the suburbs, a nice lot, nice looking neighborhood in a community north of Boston towards NH. $239,000.  Now listen to this.....they showed the back yard. It had one , nice , G scale Garden RR, the nicest I ever saw, and I have seen a few. There were at least 5 trains running that I could see, water features, bridges, all kinds of buildings. The owner has spent $25,000 he estimates on equipment for this Garden RR.

The RR goes with the house!!!! All for $239,000!!!!!!! Shock [:O]Smile [:)] Man, what a deal !!! The owner is hoping that the new owner/s keep the RR and don't tear it up and sell it on EBay.

RYAN: Cutting grass already????? Good Lord you are only about 600 miles south of me!!! I had better get my equipment serviced for the season !!

Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Bad news is it is only 7 ½ years old and has only 82,500 miles on it, I was hoping for at least another 3 years and getting up to 120,000 miles. Oh well!

My mom's old dodge caravan lasted 8 years, didn't do 80,000 miles, and my family spent more than $40,000 repairing it. The engine was completely replaced twice. Then some stupid 17 year old rolled it cuz' he hit it at 90 MPH on a 35 MPH road last year.
Top That!

Good evening Diners:  Didn’t get to the computer at all weekend or yesterday until after 8:00 p.m., and then not long enough to come to the diner.  Today wasn’t much different. So there is some catching up to be done.  However, first let me update you on the scenery painting, where much more rock looks like it’s meant to, and quite a bit of the sawdust ground cover is now more or less vegetation looking.  All in all, a successful weekend.  Lots of trees and bushes to add, and of course the WS ground foams for the colour variation. (There’s lots of texture built in with the sawdust mix).

OK, so now I’m catching up…Scott, car looks great, and the hat too!Cowboy [C):-)]

Garry

der......... I'll rub it in (so to speak) ..........I'm washing the vehicles with a hose, bucket, and sponge.  You know. Like a normal person.
…so I can send mine down to where?Big Smile [:D]

Luc:  Your news on Gloria was posted on the 24th.  Sorry I’m only catching it now.  You're both in my thoughts a nd prayers.Angel [angel]

Sue:  Great scratch building!  I like the way you’ve been able to get the true to prototype waffle siding effect!Cool [8D]

Lichen all over the rocks?...or am I misinterpreting?

CapeJim:  You sure are eating well these days! Those last three looked really good!Dinner [dinner]

JR:

Usually I add color to the plaster, but I was too idle this time. I like the look of the colored plaster better than the stain.
…I agree on the colouring of the plaster to prevent chips showing white as a theory, but don’t actually do it because I like the variation of colours I can get with the washes, even on the same casting…like these. ones…

Ryan:

I attached the wye - roundtable - roundhouse section and the passenger station section to the benchwork. Just have the main line reverse loop section to attach and then all the lower deck benchwork is DONE!!!! Yea!!!!
…That’s a whole lot of progress for so fraught a time, and lawn mowing tooBow [bow]…with all those reverse polarity situations, you’ve got yourself an interesting wiring job, unless you’re in dcc, in which case 3 reversing decoders will do the job, or 2 only if the TT is wired like the Atlas ones, and self corrects the polarity.

RT: Congrats on the train room walls, always a milestone!Thumbs Up [tup]

TV beckons, gotta go.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace,Angel [angel]

Good Evening.

der,  Great photos.  You have been working hard.  What scale are you modeling?

Is this the rust color on the rock that you were refering to?

For a birthday surprise, Larry took me on motorcycle ride to look at the roundhouse that we are modeling.  It was just a quick look on the outside, but wow, I am ready to get back to work on that.  Maybe the new airbrush will show up this week.

Well, back to tie painting.

Sue

<>Sue:  Looks like we're getting close to the end of the page, so if this goes over, maybe I can front a night-cap?

Is this the rust color on the rock that you were refering to?

...that's an interesting colour and texture, what paint mix do you use fro that?  The rust I'm trying for shows best on the blue rocks, and seems to have more yellows in it...it's hard to describe, and I haven't yet hit on the right look in test batches. It's not as red as your rust there, but I'd like to try doctoring up some of what you've used. As I said earlier, it's mainly on vertical surfaces where the rock has split, so you get blue rock showing on faces in one direction, and this rust on the faces at right angles to them, all on the same rock.
BTW, I'm in Normal Scale.
