Good Morning All,
The sun is just rising outside, it's a bit chilly and we'll see mid sixties today with partly cloudy skies - so say the weather guessers. I'll have a regular and one of Bills' glazed donuts please Zoe. Topeka trip turned out ok. Hope Inch and Jerry saw me wave as I flew by in the jet. Funny place Kansas - to get there you need to fly to Missouri and drive in. Thought I'd see a bunch of railroad stuff there as both the ATSF and UP have roots there, but except for a bit at the Kansas history museum and the restored UP Overland station, there isn't much. Did find a Sante Fe 4-6-4 on a grass verge of the EXPO Center, but it is in rough shape and needs lots to even stabilize it. No hobby shop trips this time either. Just as well as I need to save a bit for when my I-5 and C-Liner are ready for pickup.
The race you ask? Well yes we were out there for a week to run 20 minutes a day and some days not even that much. Lots of fiddly stuff all week with some carburetor problems, a blown up diff and the wrong gearing, but we got all that and the handling sorted out for race day qualifying 4th. It rained and we had lightening all race day morning so the schedule was moved back and the races shortened to 30 minutes from 45 to fit all 8 race groups into the afternoon. When we went out there was still standing water in several turns so we fitted hand grooved slicks (no problem there it had also gotten cold so no chance for overheating the tires and chunking tread off them). We had a great start and got to the first turn even with the pole sitter and second overall. We ran third for the first two laps but on the third lap the motor went flat and Kenny was just able to hang on to fifth at the end of the 15 laps we got. Had the motor behaved we had a legitimate shot at a win or at least the podium. For those interested, the race will air on Speed at noon on Weds Dec 19 - hardly prime time but what can you do.
Still picking up at home to get set for some layout time after this weekend (Watkins Glen).
Anyone know of a source for N scale windows and doors in quantity? The only stuff listed in Walthers is brass. I would like to find the N equivalent to Grandt Lines HO window and door assortment. Gotta go and pick up tools. Hope all is well with the rest of you and I'll try to catch up posting later this week. CUL,J.R.
Good morning ! from Indiana.

Just watched Trains on RFDTV, most were films around WWII time frame. Last clip was on the making of the move "The Train" with Burt Landcaster. Why they put these shows on at 2:00am is a mystery to me.
One correction (not that anyone would have caught it), that little red juice jack did cost me over $10, it was the Docksider that ran under $10. No biggie, I just have a thing about correcting my mistakes.
Off to La La land here. Rob
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Another beautiful day down here in Paradise. No rain, so we're starting to dry out after all we've had over the past few weeks. But with those clear skies the sun beat down pretty good, and temps climbed up to around 35º C, or about 95º F. Just a bit toasty for mid-October, but pretty common here.
I'm a little late checking in tonight. It took me a while to clear the tears out of my eyes so that I could see the keyboard clearly. The Red Sox dropped another one to the Indians, so we're now down 1-2 in the series. Oh well, there's still time to come back. Of course it would help if we could win tomorrow and stop the bleeding. I had a bad feeling from the second inning on. We had bases loaded and no outs and couldn't push even one run across. Bad start to the game. At least the NY Giants are ahead against Atlanta, so maybe I'll get some satisfaction this evening.
No great news from the orange front, and no progress (so what else is new) on the modeling side either.
der John - the layout looks like it's coming along great. Now that you have stained the rock castings the picture is much clearer to see. That's going to be a great scene when you get it done. Congrats. Way to make me feel bad!!
Derrick - thanks for posting those very interesting photos. Your layout? If not, who's is it? Is there a website that shows more of it?
Ryan - Oh, and keep those pies a coming....Fran must be work-in overtime now!
Duke: Armchairing isn't all bad but we need to get started on the layouts again.
That's about it from down here this evening. Catch up with you tomorrow.
Hasta mañana,
Ed
Evening Gang:
Ryan: The web site is avwrr.org. The name of the railroad is the Annetta Valley Western. we have 2 major meets each year. One in the spring and one in the fall. We also have run days every now and then when the weather is co-operating.
Not much going on today. We had rain last night, about 1.25 inches. Sorry Rob. There was a bunch of lightning and wind also. There was a large pecan tree that got blown over on our neighbors place also lots of limbs and branches down. We're supposed to get more rain Thursday and Friday so no cutting hay. Our son in law is supposed to be coming down this week end for an air show. He's in the Air Force and works on V-22s. They are bring one to the show. I hopw that he will be able to stay with us for a day or so.
Well it's bed time.
Good Night All
Hi everyone. Its been awhile , just dropped in to see whats going on @the diner. Hope this finds all well.
Layout is still coming along(slow i might add) But its coming. well back to the layout.
Grilled Salmon with veggies & rice, please and thank you. Oh, and plenty of coffee before & after dinner.
***Ryan, all finished with the barn gutters. Decided to run 3 down spouts instead of 2, to catch every last drop with less spill-over. Tomorrow I'll pick up the extra end caps and tubing to run all 3 into the tank. Set the tank on a raised wood structure (tossed together out of scrap wood) to keep any mice from setting up camp underneath it. Should be just ewnough room for the barn cats to patrol under it.
Still have to tackle the house gutters, which will go very quick...once I figure out how to reach the edge of the roof. Might buy a ladder stabalizer tomorrow and see if that will allow room for the gutter between edge of tin roof and ladder itself. Hope that made sense!?!
***Mark, sounds like a good plan there for your new cars. One day I would like to do the same thing to my UP passenger cars. Post photos of them if/when you can, before and after shots would be great.
IT arrived today. The ugly little red 4-wheel juice-jack arrived and when set on the tracks it came right to life. Has enough weight to it already to be a reasonable runner. (probably not through switches though) So, for under $10 I have another little project loco to toy with. Speaking of "toys", that is almost what it looks like next to a new state of the art Kato, Atlas, etc loco. Still fun though.
Rob
Good afternoon!
Chloe, hmm, just some onion rings and a coke for now.
Well, my passenger cars came today. They are pretty nicely detailed, and the paint is great. The duplex sleeper is actually modeled after a real car, donated by Southern Pacific to Union Pacific for the Portland Rose (Or the City of Portland, I can't remember right now). They're all Armour Yellow with a light grey roof and bottom, except the dome lounge has a darker color. They perform higher than I expected, although I can see the coupler's extra reach bar under the frame of the dome which is not streamlined. The observation car wobbles a bit, nothing weight can't fix. My plan for the cars upgrades looks like this:
Get Kadee #58 couplers and coupler boxes mounted on each car.
Get Intermountain or Proto 2000 wheelsets on each.
Add however much weight is needed.
Now for the extras I might do later:
Red LED marker lights on the observation car
Interiors
Working Diaphragms
(Sorry, for some reason my computer skips a line when I push enter, instead of just going below the first line.)
Well, that's it for me.
Later.
Mark
Hello everybody...
Thanks for the remarks on my photo. Believe it or nt the Chevy is clear of trains. A '59 Caddy would not have cleared its tailfins, however. Thanks to Rob for comments on track ballasting.
Der John ....... the rock work is very good!!! (We still would like to get back to NS, but this year was way too eventful.)
Jeff ...... the little building looks great to me.
Derrick .... I'm impressed! Any more photos?
Paul ....... You did well at the train show. I'm glad for you. I like those old Varney cars, too. The live steam meet sounded like a great time. Sounds like a rough ride on the gondola. Perhaps. it can be fixed by mounting sails on it. The you can be Gon With The Wind!
Happy Model Railroading.

Another busy weekend over...and back to the grind stone now!
Worked in the yard Saturday morning, hopefully that's that last time the grass will need cutting for the growing season.
Watched LSU get beat by Kentucky on Saturday and then watched Seattle get beat by the Saints on Sunday. Go SAINTS!
Phillip - Glad to hear that the wife is doing better!
Rob - I guess we are getting that 100 year drought again! How's the gutter and rain recovery system coming along?
Ed - Your cooking sounds good and ratatouille is one of my favorite eggplant dishes! On, and keep those pies a coming....Fran must be work-in overtime now!
Duke - Then the next time were in Texas we'll have to make plans to visit with Paul and check out their 7.5" layout!
Jim - Nice look-in Filets you got there. They look good enough to eat!
Paul - Sounds like the live steam meet went well! What times of the year to you all have the meets?
Der John - Those rock castings are looking really great on you layout!
Later folks,
Ryan
Rob must be buying. It is a little early for lunch, but I will have coffee and a piece of pie.
Yes, we were talking about the fire. We were guessing 1994. The blacken corpses of the trees were a beautiful contrast with the yellow/orange/green in the drainages yesterday.
Later, Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
in a UP mug, please & thanks!
***Philip, ANY extra rain, PLEASE send our way. Need to get a few more parts to finish gutters today, but I plan on being ready to catch any and every drop that hits these roofs.
***Derrick, all I can say about those photos is WOW! Thanks for posting them.
***Sue, wasn't there a big fire around Leavenworth some years back, or am I thinking of somewhere else? Our pastures still have some green in them, all tough weed species. It would have to rain much & frequently to bring the pasture grasses back to life. We have never had to re-seed, but who knows what the future holds here. Desperately need a couple major tropical storms to come and sit on us to make any difference.
Well, time to water the critters (Please Well God, keep bringing forth life-giving water)

Hi, All. I have been out of touch lately. Just busy. Some days I didn't even turn the computer on.
I see that Jim is feeding everyone well.
Philip has been telling jokes.
Garry and Jeff are sharing their photos. Oh, Jeff, I like the sagging gutters.
Der, glad to see you working on the layout. It is always great to get some color.
Rob, I went climbing in Leavenworth with a couple of friends yesterday. The pastures look more like dirt than grass. Is yours still blowing away? When you get rain, will the grass come back, or do you have to replant?
I will just have some coffee black. I have a few fence things to do before it starts raining again. Looks like the ten day forcast is for rain.
Derrick, Great photos.

Good Morning, Zoe - one of Bill T.'s donuts and a cup of coffee, please. Thanks!
Mitch (Eeyore9900), I'm with you - a clean car looks too shiny for my tastes. Definitely weathering is in order! (My )
A bit cooler this morning, and supposed to get some rain today or tonight. Then another chance for rain on Wednesday, the weatherguessers are saying. We sure need it for the crops and gardens around here.
I'll be in the corner booth, finishing up breakfast. Prayers for your week (w**k or not).
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Morning all!
FINALLY, looks like we might see some rain in the near future. We're WAY behind on rainfall this year.
TODAY...WARMER AGAIN! Highs hit the mid-70's Sunday, and we will tack about 5 degrees to that today. Here is a map of expected highs temperatures. Weather will be dry today, with a mixture of sun and clouds, rain chances will hold off until tonight.
RAIN ON THE WAY! A line of storms will develop in Illinois this afternoon, and this wave of moisture will move into central Indiana after sunset. The verdict is still out on how well this wave of moisture will hold together. If this moisture can sustain the lack of lift and overnight timing...rain amounts COULD be between .25" and .75", which is much needed.
Got my honey-do list knocked out yesterday, but my own list didn't get touched. My boy has basketball practice tonight, so it doesn't look like my list will get done tonight either. Maybe tomorrow night?
So whats up in your neck of the woods?
Good morning.

Evenin' folks-just a quick coffee to go & I'm off to zzz land.
Headed down this morning to hook up with my fiance at the festival-she did well $ wise-almost $200 in sales! I roamed around too, & noticed that an HO TRAIN layout was rolling on display in a transplanted depot on the property (used to be on the old NYC line that ran thru the eastern part of Carroll Co, but was moved to the festival site some years ago by the historical society & the layout installed within) Anyways, was cool to check out & give me inspiration. Nothing in the way of true accuracy (& a lot of cars I noticed in need of WEATHERING! ) but still cool-the fellow running it had things set up with DCC, & did his best to represent fallen flags of the area (PRR, PC, NYC, & a neat steam powered NKP coal train. One of his trains had a gon ahead of the loco, & had a small cam fitted in which was showing the train's progress showing on a TV screen above. Neat as all get out. (I remember when the smallest you could get would barely fit into a Lionel loco.) He also had 2 Thomas engines which seem to be a staple anymore at layouts on public display for the kids.
Another thing I'm curious about & need to find out I guess-the mill itself had a steam whistle thats sounds almost identical to those "hooter" whistles on the old N&W mallets. At some point in the future I'll have to find out where they got theirs.
My bud never showed up as he was supposed to, so just wait till I see him again...LOL!
Jim! Thanks-my website is way overdue for an update-I've done several more cars since then (& a few more on the way) I have to be nice to my other half since she's the one that set it up & basically created it. (she needs to update hers too LOL!)
K, the coffee's kickin' in-gettin' too chatty-off to bed- Nite All!
[DerJohn, nice work - very nice! I see you're working on a depot also, huh? That scenery looks fine, even without being all done! " border="0" width="15" height="15" />]
Excellent!
[Garry, great photo at your depot, too - but the driver of that 57 Chevy better be careful backing up, so he/she doesn't get a little 'body work' done..." border="0" width="15" height="15" /> ]
(again) I was wondering if the wee little folk should park their cars parallel to the tracks, rather than backing up over them to get out? Or is there an exit we can't see from this photo between buildings? BTW, Superb ground work in and around around the tracks.
Hitting the hay early tongiht. TaTa! Rob
Good evening - just a quick stop on the way home for the night.

Good evening everyone!
Fergie The Sportsplex show is about the middle of Nov. George’s Trains weren’t at Truro, BTW.
Finally got to the rock casting staining this evening after my walk. Still have the upthrust rock to do, and that will be a different colour mix that I haven’t decided on yet. Here’s one pic that shows some of the new work, together with the Trailer train flat, and a depressed centre flat I got in a show in the Spring. Here’s a long shot of the rock wall. The overhanging bits make more sense now, I think. Here’s looking the other way up that same face. The focus isn’t the greatest as I couldn’t squeeze in the corner too well with the camera to get this one.
The next job, after the remaining staining, is to get the ground cover a basic green before adding coloured ground foams, etc.
Jeff I like those card buildings, and have used them effectively on all my layouts. Humidity is a challenge, but a good sealing coat usually takes care of that. There was a vendor from New Brunswick at the show with an extensive range of buildings, vessels, etc. They have kits. I think they work with either printed paper that’s then glued to matte board, or printed matte board. Quite sturdy anyway, and really sharp looking when painted up. They had a whole layout display with car ferry and a dock scene. All the structures were paper/card.
It’s late, so I’ll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.

Evening Gang: Well the live steam meet was great. The weather was cool but not cold. No rain and abit cloudy. I rain my diesel Sat and ran off to Ft. Worth for a train show. I got 5 Varney ore cars and 1 MDC taper side plus a heavy truck a Walthers catalogue and finally 2 new books. Both books were new from MBI. One is on the DM&IR and the other on the Milw Rd. When I got back to the track I ran a bit more and let one of the guys have a crack at it. When I got back this morning John told me that the prime mover in the diesel has a problem. It started smoking real bad. It had been smoking a bit but we figured that it hadn't been run in a long while and would stop if it got some running. I'm hoping it is just a stuck oil ring. I put some light oil in the cylinder and pulled it through a couple of times and am letting it sit until tomorrow. I'll get it out and see how it goes. If it still does it I'll have to pull the engine out and have it looked at. Today John steamed up the live steamer and ran about 7 hours. An old friend and I were riding with him when an axle on the gondola broke. So I'm going to work on getting the new wheels mounted on axles and installed. There is always something.
Jeff: I really like that shed. I'll look that sight up and give it a try. Good job on the retaining wall and that culvert looks good too.
Fergie have a good trip.
Well i think I'll head for bed.
