I buy engines, rolling stock, structures, etc, then store them for future use. I'm looking forward to semi-retirement in about four years, have a good income to afford the toys now but not the time to invest in a layout now.I have started a 4x8 n scale with slow progress.
I had purchased almost anything that caught my eye.Now I buy undecorated or decorated items pertaining to Maine railroads,Maine Central,Bangor and Aroostook,Boston and Maine etc.
Anything I purchase now I will look at it ,maybe run it on an oval track, then goes to storage.

I started by setting grade, laying roadbed and track around the outside edge of the layout. Now, I can't work on the track and detail I want in the center areas, without damaging what's already done!!
Solution: Out come the wrecking tools....and conversion from a 4x8 table to an around-the-wall layout, no more than 2 feet wide at any point except the end loops.
Ah. yes...A modeler's work is never done!

Rip open that box and Throw it on the track!

Even though my layout is incomplete, I always put the new item out there if nothing else to just simply let it run around the track or to see how it looks. If I like what I see, it gets to stay that way, If I dont like it, I look to see what can be changed. This is true for locos, cars,& buildings.

   Have fun with your trains

I always follow the rule, if I like it , and I have money I buy it.
The times that I have had the most time to relax and enjoy the hobby of Model Railroading have been times of layoff or unemployment.
SO, When I have the money and see something intriguing I buy it and add to the heap of delights that await my next RIF or layoff.

I live in a town where the local hobby shop has not progressed beyond the "Plasticville" buildings, they have never heard of Cornerstone, DPM, etc., so I therefore buy 99.9% of my buildings through the Walther's catalog from Bruce's Train Shop in Sacramento (my sister lives about two miles away from the store). When I get the buildings, thanks to the US Mail, I generally begin painting and construction imediately and then they will sometimes be used right away, but more often than not they get put on a shelf and i decide where they are going to go later. This generally works well, but on occassion I have had to (carefully) re-paint a building before placing it. I think the reason is because I need to order by mail.

I can't wait to get home to put that new building or car together! I don't get a new piece evey week so I really enjoy the moment. Before I started my HO layout when I got a new engine or car I had two pieces of flex-track nailed to a board and ran them back and forth, just had to see'em run! Theres just something about building something and setting back and admiring your work! Thats way model railroading is my hobby!

I model in N, and I put structures together right after I get them. That way when I work on my layout I can set buildings on and see how they look completed.

My railroad is being built in 3 phases, or sections. the first is at long last becoming operational. So some kits are going into service rather quickly, the more involved ones have to wait . I'm all too familiar with what happens when you put off buying a desired item. The layout is small, in a 10 x 12 room, so it won't take forever to reach a reasonable degree of completion. Everything takes longer than you expect, which is OK.

In spending some time in Germany and the exchange rate was very favorable, I bought all my locomotives and rolling stock for some future layout I would build when I got back to the States. I have been home more than 2 years now and the layout is only 1/4 finished so they will remain in their boxes for a while yet. I also bought a bunch of Faller and Vollmer building kits and build these as I go along and what is needed for the project at that particular time. Have fun.

I'm with the "hold in storage" group . I'm currently reworking my set-up for a bi-level passenger head-end terminal with train shed . So my recent acquisitions have been a mixed fleet of heavies & smooth sides . I holding them till I can make a full blown operation.

Like many others, I buy kits and rolling stock that I like as it becomes available so I can put it to use when the empire is built some day. However I try to build a structure or a model as soon as I get it, so that it does not just sit around collecting dust. This allows me to contruct small dioramas or to rotate structures on and off of my small layout. Could you imagine finishing laying track for that dream layout and then looking at the mountain of kits that would have to be assembled?

I belong to the York Railway Modelers Club in Toronto (layout set in the mid 50’) and as a group we buy large quantities of freight car, so most of the cars are worked on shortly after purchase. As of this month we have about 65 cars at various stages of completion.
