It varys quite a lot. Some things are bought, built, and put into immeadiate use. Others are bought and stored until they are needed.Limited run locomotives, if they are going to be needed later have to be bought when they are available as do some freight car kits in certain schemes. The result is quite a bit that is stored but that will be built someday. I have a layout which is still under construction so time must be split between building kits and making progress on the railroad.

I currently store most everything I buy. I had a layout, but moved and have not started my new empire (or workshop) yet. Even when I had a layout, I could never seem to keep up with all my purchases. Besides, I like to have several projects going at the same time. It helps me avoid boredom and frustration. I purchase mostly undecorated kits too, so you often have to grab 'em when you find 'em! I voted for future assembly and use. That's primarly because a number of my purchases are either limited run or produced in batches with no assurance of when the next batch is coming. I work in S scale and while there is a lot of stuff available at any given time, it is not always the same stuff. Of course some of the items I purchased thirty years ago in HO scale are still kits, a little later in O scale. Some of these like the old Central Valley kits (not the same as the current Central Valley) are collectors items. To me they are future projects in case I decide to change scales again.
Enjoy

Right now, I've got a very, slightly used diesel engine that I just had to see work, so I tried it on a couple of pieces of snap track to test. I don't have a layout yet! I've also got a brand new doodlebug, undecorated, that I'm trying to get up the nerve to paint. These are both N scale! I've even got a new airbru***o use when I do it and a bottle of frisket to keep it straight! I'm still trying to decide which RR to model aftrer, although I'm pretty sure I'll go with Rock Island - my used engine is of that livery!
I belong to a club which I use HO scale for when we have shows. etc.

Most of what I buy gets put to use in the next 2-3 months, even though I also scan ebay for the more "rare" Western Maryland stuff. I also bid on out of production kits that I may not have space for now, but I know eventually I will use, when the kids are out of the house!!!

Typical of many Model railroaders. I buy what I like, and what fits the time period I am modeling. Some items get built shortly after purchase and installed on Layout. Ready to run, or previously used built rolling stock, locomotives usually get placed on Layout. Kits more likely to be inventoried and stored for future use and future larger layout. True you have to buy some items when you see them, or you may not find them again later.

I am currently creating my fleet of loco's and rolling stock, most of the loco's are RTR with some kits while the bulk of the rolling stock being in kit form. The layout should start next year in my new home Finally.

I usually can't wait to try out a new item. Be it a locomotive or car. I usually run it for a while then go to something else. The same with my cars. Most of my equipment is from the 60s era. but there is some from the 40s and a little from the 90s.

This is a hard one to answer with only the four selections. Most of my new purchases are assembled and boxed for transport to and from the model railroad club (not one of the selections) and may not be used right away. They can't be left on the layout for any length of time except during show season, so they go back into the box for storage or to return home for fine tuning or maintenance.

The stage of my modeling is "planning and accumulating". I purchase the items I plan to run on my O-scale, 3-rail layout and store them because I have no space in my apartment for a permanent layout. However, I have plenty of track, power (both in locomotives and transformers), rolling stock to take over the living room floor and circle furniture. For short-term enjoyment and accomplishment is to connect the living room circle with the spare bedroom circle. I need to buy more curved track and switches to complete a connection.
One day (very soon hopefully) my domination of the basement will occur!

I buy, whether its off of e-bay,or out of a store for assembly and when our club has a set up .I use my fleet. Now this doesn't mean that they All get assembled right away!!We need another box put on there to select from. When the mood strikes, or when the busy summer schedule finally slows down to where you can sit home, look around, and tell everyone,"Just leave me alone,Im busy!" That's when you do kit your work!!!! Gale.
