I buy it if I think it fits what i'm trying to portray. There are just too many choices out there these days, you could go broke just trying to keep up with the manufacturers, but as usual they seem to entice a purchase many times a year. The other issue is that the quality is vastly improved over the older stuff in my collection so I'm constantly thinning the older herd and replacing with the new and more detailed (more pricey) stuff.

I assemble all of my kits right away so I do not get a backlog of kits to be build..I hate to see a stack of kits waiting to be built. You see to my mind I got the kit for use and not to put in a stack of kits to be built at a later date..After all it is needed you see that is why I bought it in the first place.

As my layout's only a 8 x 1 portable effort at the moment, most of my stock gets assembled, run in on an oval test track (in the case of locos), and is then either packed away or put on a shelf.

I try to build stuff when I get it. However in the past couple of years I have purchased far more than I build.

Most of the old train guys I know have enough unbuilt kits "in stock" to open small hobby shops. When I saw this I vowed I would never be like that.... Now I have about 40 unbuilt car kits and about 25 structures (four storage boxes). Guess I slipped a little.

I found when I was building my last layout I was building mostly structures. As the layout matured, the focus shifted to cars and finescale structures and details. I am starting a new layout so I will try to balance a little more between the two. I also have fallen prey to the "buy it now because it may not be available later" syndrome. This line of thinking has expanded the collection of un-built kits dramatically.

I take it home, put it on my work table, and check my email. That's the best, most reliable way to contact me... About 2-3 AM, I may decide to start assembly. (Life's great for a teenager in summer with good friends, good habbits, and good hobbies!)
[:D]I know what you mean. I'm 44 years ld, don't have a job due to a disability, hardly any freinds, hardly any responsobilities, so I can stay up late, and sleep in. (though I ussaully don't). And, I'm not married (and don't want to get married)
The only down side is, I can't drive.[:(!][:(!]

I'm a moduler railroader so sometimes it sits for a while and some get build right away and used and then get put up to make way for neww stuff.

For years while traveling the world I would buy items for "future" use. Built several small layouts and modules, but never really enough room for layout. Have now settled in one place and find I have way to much to use. But am building a layout that will be big enough to play with several of them. It is supposed to be fun, isn't it? Al

I belong to the York Railway Modelers Club in Toronto (layout set in the mid 50’) and as a group we buy large quantities of freight car, so most of the cars are worked on shortly after purchase. As of this month we have about 65 cars at various stages of completion.

Like many others, I buy kits and rolling stock that I like as it becomes available so I can put it to use when the empire is built some day. However I try to build a structure or a model as soon as I get it, so that it does not just sit around collecting dust. This allows me to contruct small dioramas or to rotate structures on and off of my small layout. Could you imagine finishing laying track for that dream layout and then looking at the mountain of kits that would have to be assembled?

I'm with the "hold in storage" group . I'm currently reworking my set-up for a bi-level passenger head-end terminal with train shed . So my recent acquisitions have been a mixed fleet of heavies & smooth sides . I holding them till I can make a full blown operation.

In spending some time in Germany and the exchange rate was very favorable, I bought all my locomotives and rolling stock for some future layout I would build when I got back to the States. I have been home more than 2 years now and the layout is only 1/4 finished so they will remain in their boxes for a while yet. I also bought a bunch of Faller and Vollmer building kits and build these as I go along and what is needed for the project at that particular time. Have fun.

My railroad is being built in 3 phases, or sections. the first is at long last becoming operational. So some kits are going into service rather quickly, the more involved ones have to wait . I'm all too familiar with what happens when you put off buying a desired item. The layout is small, in a 10 x 12 room, so it won't take forever to reach a reasonable degree of completion. Everything takes longer than you expect, which is OK.

I model in N, and I put structures together right after I get them. That way when I work on my layout I can set buildings on and see how they look completed.

I can't wait to get home to put that new building or car together! I don't get a new piece evey week so I really enjoy the moment. Before I started my HO layout when I got a new engine or car I had two pieces of flex-track nailed to a board and ran them back and forth, just had to see'em run! Theres just something about building something and setting back and admiring your work! Thats way model railroading is my hobby!

I live in a town where the local hobby shop has not progressed beyond the "Plasticville" buildings, they have never heard of Cornerstone, DPM, etc., so I therefore buy 99.9% of my buildings through the Walther's catalog from Bruce's Train Shop in Sacramento (my sister lives about two miles away from the store). When I get the buildings, thanks to the US Mail, I generally begin painting and construction imediately and then they will sometimes be used right away, but more often than not they get put on a shelf and i decide where they are going to go later. This generally works well, but on occassion I have had to (carefully) re-paint a building before placing it. I think the reason is because I need to order by mail.
