I have 16 but I am now looking at getting rid of all the later (chronologically) ones because I have settled on 1947, and am going over to DCC. The reason is that the 12-14 car Empire Builder was still being pulled by my pair of BLI E-7 A's. They changed to ABA and sometimes ABBA FT's or F3's in '49 and relegated the E units to lesser trains. For freight I have an ABBA set of Stewart FT's that I am converting to DCC/sound. And I have a BLI NW-2 switcher on order. I may keep some of the others for the diesel shop and service tracks, like my Baldwin switcher, and 2 GP7's.

... how many I admit to depends on whether my wife's looking at this or not! [:D]

I think I have 25 HO scale locos at the moment; most are either B&M or Maine Central about half with DCC decoders. I have a couple decorated for the fictious Colorado inspired road of the club I belong to (Alton Model Railway Group altonmrg.co.uk).

I've also got about a dozen British narrow guage locos in various scales and mainly scratch built.

Fascinating question. I'm 64 and bought my first HO steamer back in 1962. PFM Santa Fe 1850 2-8-0. Still have it, replaced it with a can motor about ten years ago, still runs like a Swiss watch. I have a lot of older Japanese brass, all steam, mainly Espee and Rio Grande, when they were still relatively affordable. Of the 30+locos I have, they ALL get a workout from time to time. As to favorites, it would be hard to say. But the idea for me is, no matter how many you have, keep 'em running! That's what we're supposed to do, right?

so why do you post to this topic? to rack up stars ?

Hey M.A.K.A.L,

That is too funny! And Bill Methewson called __ME__ a flamer![(-D][(-D] Please go back and note that the post had been edited and then go back and read the content. If I were posting to earn the stars, I would be all over the NES and Coffee Shop. I'm sorry, that isn't my cup of tea - pun intended!!!

Now a question for you, M.A.K.A.L.: what is your other ID on this forum? I see your occupation is PITA (Pain In The ***) and you talk and show some forum savy yet you joined less than 48 hours ago. It is obvious you are not a newbie here. Care to tell us all who you really are or do you need to hide like a troll?

If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!

At last count, about 76, all but 5 have DCC in them, but the others have issues to be worked out before they see decoders.
Not bad considering the layout (modules) are only 24 ft long!

About 70, all eagerly awaiting the completion of the new layout. Now I finally have enough space for them. My wife understood we had to find a layout room with a house attached. We found a house with a detached garage/workshop (26x36). Have been finishing it since August. This will be a big change from the little 10x14 room I used to have.

A lot of Rio Grande and SP, but my UP roster has been growing. Also a few BNSF, NS and CSX for variety.

Sounds very similar to my situation. We found a new house (with room for trains at the insistence of my wife) and I started construction of the Siskiyou Line in May of 1991. Been having a great time, and the layout's now going on 14 years old.

I model mostly SP but I have need for almost 70 locos for the layout to run all the trains as planned. Am most of the way there at this point, with just a bit to go.

Since I model the 1980s progressively as 20 years behind the current year, in a few more years, Rio Grande power will start showing up mixed with the SP power as the Rio Grande purchase of the SP happens on the layout.
