Hello all,
I'm obviously new to the forum, but not model railroading. My favorite railroad has been Chessie ever since my uncle, a Chessie/B&O engineer, first showed me the big Cat. Sadly, CSX gobbled them up, but I have been a fan of CSX ever since.

I'm military and have been away from model railroading for almost 7 years, but I have recently come back and am amazed at the wealth of CSX stuff out there for us modelers. Strange, I remember being incredibly frustrated with the lack of CSX models when I first got into serious model railroading. It was almost as if CSX was the red-headed stepchild. Good times for sure.

I am now living in the Chicago area due to work and I saw my first Union Pacific train not long ago. Having spent most of my life living in VA and railfanning in Brunswick/Point of Rocks/Harpers Ferry, UP was something that always appeared in magazines and in product lines, never in person. Although neat to see something different, I really miss CSX, though. I digress...

Great to see a bunch of like-minded people to converse with. Hopefully we can spread the good that is CSX and its strong heritage, I'm tired of the UP/SP/ATSF/DRGW masses!

Hey CSXers! Saw some CSX today!

A CSX Coal train and a CP mixed freight awaiting their crews in Wyoming yard.

CSX SD70MAC #4738. Note the flared radiators.

CSX AC4400CW #286 leads in a train of empty coal porters from West Olive into Wyoming yard.

The arriving train of empties passes the waiting loaded coal train and mixed freight. Not everyday you see 3 trains lined up in Wyoming yard.

And although it's not CSX, I can't help but like this shot.

CP 9511 makes good time with it's train as it screames along at track speed heading for Chicago.

The Brunswick CSX / MARC yards are great for CSX railfanning! Check my post "Brunswick Railfanning" for pictures.

Yes. What you saw is known as the Huntington shops. It was at one time the largest engine facility in the U.S. The city of Huntington was built around the shops and named after Colin P. Huntington who was the man who engeneered the C&O through the Alleghenies. Also just a few miles west of Huntington is Russell Ky. The C&O had,CSX has the Russell Yard. It was at one time the largest yard owned by a single R.R. in the country. They would assemble 180 car coal trains (over 1 mile long ) on one sideing to be pulled by T1s & H8s to Toledo & great lakes area. As of today I don't know where they stand in size but they are still very large. If you are ever back in the area it would be worth the trip to go to Russell and check out the yard. It goes forever. Miles of yard.

Thanks for the welcome back Ken, Hope you enjoy your trip. I love camping, all my family trips were camping trips. If we wanted to go on vacation we would stay at a campground. At the time we complained and tried to get us to stay at a hotel but looking back I wouldn't change a thing.

The trip i took lasted 6 days saw atleast 15 bands in concert, walked around downtown chicago (which included my first ride on metra) and a couple hours in milawakee and kenosha wisc. I'm tired

Andrew what a coincidence, I leave for a week-long camping trip first thing Saturday morning, so I'll say "welcome back" now before I leave...

I just found the answer to my question: CSX and Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX) finalized their locomotive trade in May 2000. In this deal, CSX received 25 SD70M's EMDX 7000-7024, 3 GP60's LLPX 6001-6003, and 3 SD60's LLPX 8300-8302. CSX sent 153 units to LLPX.

Locomotive Leasing Partners-I thought that was LLPX. Anyway, it'll be a great one to model.

SP GP60s never had lights at that place in the nose (SP had beugn converting to two headlights before they ordered GP60s), SP's first order of GP60s (9600-9619) had two headlights mounted vertically in the middle of the nose, all SP, SSW, and DRGW GP60s after that had headlights between the number boards. Also, SP GP60s did not have the front of the cab angled. I believe those are the ex-EMD demostrators.

Drew,
The CSX Photo Archive on trainweb lists a few GP60's, here is one of them:

I didn't see anything for GP50's though. Here is the link if you want to explore that whole site:

Does anyone know when CSX received their three GP60's?

Nice pics Ken, looks just like the SD40-2 I am working on now! Question when did the white roof come into play, and WHY?

Josh, I'm not sure exactly when the white roofs appeared, but their purpose is to keep the cab interior cooler by reflecting the sunlight instead of absorbing it...cheaper than retrofitting every loco with a roof-mounted A/C unit!

First off, I'd like to say, FINALLY, CSX fans. It's good to be here.

Anyway, the white roof was introduced in 2002, and Ken hit the nail on the head as to why.

It's a bummer for me though, I model late 1999/2000. I guess my engineers will have to die of heat exhaustion[8D]

GAH what a dummy I am. [V] It was in 2004, not 2002, that CSX introduced the white roofs. I think I got it mixed up with UP's introduction of the flags in '02. Ahh who knows.

Actually, the white roofs, or "White Caps" as they are sometimes called, were introduced in early 2001.

We've got a decent sized yard here in Grand Rapids, MI, but the yard is really in Wyoming, MI (just outside of GR). One of CSX's Car Repair shops is there, it's also a crew change point for the CP run through trains. For pics, check out my railimages site in my signature.

Have a good 4th.

Do any of the rest of you live near a big yard? We have a pretty big CSX yard in our town. That's right, town, not city. The yard has been called the gateway to coal country. Unofficially, that is. Coal trains suck though. We do have at least two or three freights every day, and one or two intermodal/'TOFC trains a week.

Speaking of sparklers...

Last 4oJ (4th of july) I was in California and my cousins and aunt and uncle and mom and dad and sister were all watching fireworks we had bought. Suddenly a Chevy truck comes and runs OVER one of the fireworks while it was burning!!! It put it out, and it was our best one too...
