With all this record breaking heat we have been experiencing, I think we all deserve a refreshing Cold Snap from Samual Adams... Enjoy!

The front exterior of the house is finally done, so I think it is time for a set of before and after pictures.

gmpullmanAnyone want to guess the location of this ornate trainshed?
Clueless by Bear, on Flickr
Altoona Trainshed, circa 1880. Photo by William H. Rau. William E. Burket Collection.
The locomotive is No: 452, a D class 4-6-0, “ten-wheeler”, built by Baldwin, 1869. rebuilt at the Juniata Locomotive Shop as a DA class, and sold to the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, January 1881, becoming No:57. It appears to have then been sold to the Little Miami Railroad in 1882 becoming No: 216.

I just recently added the 'Altoona' detail to the caption after three days of no response in the forum. So much for my little trivia quiz.
Thanks for doing the sleuthing, and using Wilson's excellent powers of cognition

Good morning, diners.
I'm waiting on a carpet man. We have wood floors everywhere except for the stairway to the basement. We're replacing the carpet on the stairs. My wife wondered if we should redo the stairs with new, better wood, but I won this round.
Ed, I also checked the background information on the photo, but couldn't find any clue to where it was, so I gave up.
Kevin, the house looks great -- much better after than before.

Howdy diners. Chloe, I'll take a BLT with extra bacon. Hold the tomato.
Really stressful week with the state audit going on at work. It was a bit more intense than usual. We came out of it with one thing we have to fix, but otherwise received a glowing review. Glad it is over. Looking at the rest of the stuff on my to do list at work, it should mean things start to slow down for me for the rest of the year. It will be nice to get my head above water again.
Combining forces with my wife's parents and sister for a yard sale tomorrow. I would rather go to a yard sale than to hold one. Oh well. I've got a couple shallow well pumps, a pressure tank, and a miter saw I need to move so maybe it will be a fruitful effort. We'll see.
Ed, I had zero idea where that trainshed was, but it sure is neat looking.
John, I wanted to recarpet our stairs instead of putting new wood treads and risers on this spring, but the carpet was all the same up the stairs, down the hall, in our bedroom, and in two closets. That wasn't going to happen until we are down one particular 14 year old dog. He will probably live until he's 20.
Have a great day guys!
Mike
Instrumentals are sometimes nice as well

Good morning everyone. Chloe, I would like two chocolate frosted doughnuts and a glass of Coca-Cola. I am in the mood for sugar today.

Me too. I do not have the depth-of-knowledge when it come to real trains to even venture to guess.

Thank you.
In another thread we were talking about pictures we did not take that we wish we would have.
I really wish I had a set of photographs of the interior of this house on the day we bought it. The house was built in 1989, and it looked like the interior design was done by the set design team from Miami Vice.
The kitchen cabinets were gray with a pink stripe. The coutertops were printed in a carbon-fiber pattern. The bed in the master bedrrom was on a shag carpetted elevated platform.
The carpetting was a brown/purple color. Interior walls were mint green, light pink, and pastel yellow.
The ruddy flesh colour of the exterior was the last of the 1980s to go away... finally. We no longer live in one of John Cougar's "Little Pink Houses."

Great tune. Sundown has always been a favorite of mine.
Better photography conditions today, but still not all that great.
My Crape Myrtels are growing like crazy. I need a day without rain so I can trim them back into trees again. Way too humid out there today.

Good morning everyone. Chloe, please bring me your largest glass of cold milk while I decide what to have for breakfast this morning.
When the roofers were here working on the house they would set up their battery chargers on my backporch. I had a work bench set up out there with my miter saw and assorted scraps on it.
They would remove my stuff from the side of the work bench they needed.
Every day when they were done, they picked up the back porch and put everything back exactly where it was. The precision that they replaced all that garbage with was amazing.
Good morning, diners. Coffee, bacon, and eggs, please.
We have relatives from the west coast coming this week for a visit. That means ... we have to clean the house.
This is the old Omaha Burlington station. It is now the local ABC TV studio. They did a great job of restoring and preserving the building.
The Burlington Station and the Union Station in Omaha sat on either side of the tracks. All of the tracks converged at this spot directly on the east side of the Missouri River, and all the tracks combined to cross the bridge.
There was an elevated walkway between the two stations, with stairways down to the various platforms. The walkway and many of the tracks are gone, but the two stations have been restored and are very neat to see.
The Burlington is on the left and the Union Pacific is on the right:

Everyone have a great Saturday. Thought go out to those of you facing medical issues.
Afternoon folks!
We, here in the Finger Lakes region of NYS are having something that is very rare in this area... We are under a severe thunderstorm and possible Tornado watch. When we lived in western NY I was actually in a tornado once. We were driving and got the car in behind a sturdy building, but we actually had water running into the car from the vents by the windshield! Had about 3 inches of water in the car... Did major damage to the area and missed our mobilehome by just a couple hundred feet. Right across the road was a tomato field. That looked like someone had mowed it down. I'm a little nervous looking out the window as the sky is getting dark.....
Hope to be back here soon! All in one piece.... LOL

We'll get there sooner or later!
I'm in Delaware and extreme wind events are uncommon here as well. We had a tornado about ten miles away that did some damage to one house a couple of years ago. It was one of those the Weather Guessers had to study for a week before they confirmed it was a tornado.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Evening diners. Flo, a banana split please.
Well the yard sale was kind of a dud. My sister-in-laws street got very little traffic in spite of a neighborhood wide advertisement for at least five houses holding sales in their little subdivision. I did sell my saw at least, and I have somebody coming for the well pumps tomorrow, so that's good for me!
Have to go to a visitation for an old family friend that recently passed. I knew him for 43 years. At least he lived a good, full life (He was 80). He was an ordained minister, fruit farmer, and one of the kindest people I've known in my entire life. Not looking forward to it.
On the plus side, preseason football is going so it must mean we are getting close. Can't wait!

I hope Ray is not currently involved in a re imagineering of “Gone with the Wind!!
Mornin'..... Ray is fine as the threat of the tornado never came to fruition! We did get more heavy rain and a bit of wind, but all is well here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS!
Currently there is a brightness outside.... Hope that won't hurt anyone. If I go out for a run or long walk I may even have to use something called "Sunscreen"....
Oh, Brent (if you are here) Fitbit says that since the 1st. of April 2018 I have now put in 7,820 miles... Not too bad for an old guy. Still running about 9 miles every week.
Hope everyone has a great day!
Good morning everyone. Chloe, please toast up a bagel for me and I would like it with a huge glob of cream cheese.
York1There was an elevated walkway between the two stations, with stairways down to the various platforms.
I'll bet there were some fantastic views from that walkway.
MisterBeasley'm in Delaware and extreme wind events are uncommon here as well.
The Hurricanes make the news, but we usually have several high-wind events each year from un-named tropical depressions and the remnants of dissipated storms.
This year we have had nothing, and the prevailing weather pattern has been anything but typical for this time of year.
Water Level RouteWell the yard sale was kind of a dud.
Since you brought it up, I don't see very many yard sales around our neighborhood anymore. I wonder if that is one of things that is going away with new generations.
JaBear What’s not to like about this photo?
I don't like the vandalism evident on the boxcar.
It is a beautiful depot. I hope the vandals stay away from it.

My FitBit goes nuts with me. I walk a couple of miles every day at work, and when I am working on the house it can't figure out what is going on. Some days it says I ran a mile or two when all I was doign was hanging drywall.
The app says I am exceding all my goals and I am super-healthy.
It is a device that is open to deception!
Ah, Arizona, where you look at the forecast and get excited because the high is only going to be 107.

Non-scientific study and observation (at my house) seems to indicate that the un-Fitbit count depends upon which arm it is worn, and how active that arm is.
If you wear the thing on your left wrist and only use your left arm/hand to support yourself or hold the nail/screw, and use the right side to use the hammer/screw gun, the right does most of the motion and the left basically does nothing.
I first noticed this when we took dance lessons. Lots of steps with the cha-cha, a lot of nothing with the waltz.
In my opinion the most accurate counters are the ones that attach to your belt.
What’s not to like about this photo?
Excellent photo, for sure! I'd like it even better if a passenger station was surrounded by passenger cars, though

I seem to recall a bit of a dustup when it was discovered that hackers were tracking military personnel (no one seems to change the default password on many of these 'connected' devices). I'm surprised that the military even allows personal tracking devices to be worn around bases and 'sensitive' areas.
[edit] I guess after realizing the issue they are now restricted in some instances.
In the latest "The hobby is so darned expensive" thread I posted about some of the prices I paid for groceries today.
These were at a grocery about a mile from my house called The Neighborhood Market.
This place is owned and operated by Wal-Mart stores, but it is nothing like a Wal-Mart. It is a grocery store, and that is all. No toys, bicycles, clothing, firearms, tools, hardware, office supplies, or anything other than groceries. Well, they did have trash bags, paper towels, and razors.
It is clean and staffed with very friendly people. I have loved it.
Today, they are starting a remodel. The Neighborhood Market is becoming a Wal-Mart. Not a SuperCenter, but something with a lot more than just groceries.
This saddens me. I really liked this grocery store. I hate Wal-Marts. There are already two full-fledged Wal-Mart SuperCenters within 5 miles of here. WHY?

Good morning, everyone. Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, please.
While many on here are commenting on the hot weather, I hate to tell you this, but we are having a surprisingly mild summer. July and August, normally unbearably hot, have been mild. I usually walk at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m. to beat the heat. This morning, it was actually so cool I saw other walkers with jackets.
Bear, you mentioned the train station having similarities to Neuschwanstein. I was there last month! Me with the grandchildren:
Jim, several days ago you mentioned the Rock Island's presence in Nebraska. They played an important part in the southern part of the state. This was in Beatrice, a Nebraska town about 70 miles southeast of me:

I always loved Mondays. Because that's as far away from next Monday you can get.
York1 I used to hate Mondays.
The day I always hated was Friday. That was the day that I could not put anything off until tomorrow. I could not leave the office on Friday until everything was done and filed.
I remember several Fridays being stuck in the office until after 9:00 with no end in sight.
Those days are not missed at all.

Here the big stores do that to squeeze the smaller ones out of business.
Of course having two stores of the same company together is a lot less profit. Once the smaller stores are gone the big store closes one of theirs to leave one store.
Only one store available means no competition and prices can be increased and increased and ------
That is how one supermarket chain made £2.3 BILLION profit last year, then increased prices again this year.

Good morning Diners. A full English please, Janie.
A busy couple of weeks with grandchildren here. Now our daughter, SiL and grandchildren are on their way to Italy. Not sure when we will see them next.
I have some model buildings to build. They should keep me busy. Other things to catch up on as well.
