gmpullmanWhat an informative interview, Bear! During an earthquake do I want to be inside a tunnel or along the shore to see the tsunami coming in? Choices — choices? Such a beautiful territory! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the kiamoana
Ditto!!
Thanks Bear!
Cheers!!

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
ROBERT PETRICKHawk chases a rock dove. Rock dove crashes into window (presumably at full throttle). Milliseconds later, hawk crashes into window (not enough room for dynamic brakes to have much effect). Window breaks.
My dad talked about how a duck could break reinforced glass on aircraft when he was flying during WWII. If a plane hit a duck there was a double impact. The first impact was the duck's head. That would flex the glass significantly towards its breaking point, and then the body of the duck would hit creating a second impact that would push the glass past its breaking point. The glass was supposedly bullet proof.
Good morning.
We are having a lazy Sunday morning. We may have been exposed to the virus, so we are staying home this morning.
No donuts.
The wind last night brought down a few more branches, but nothing major. I will be able to pick them up without much work.
Deer season is in full swing here. We also have an antlerless late season in January, hoping to get the numbers down.
When I was working, we would overlook absences and tardies for students until they got their deer during hunting season.
Our pastor was lucky -- while driving 75mph on the Interstate outside of our town three weeks ago, he hit a deer. The car was undriveable, but the pastor was uninjured.
Hope everyone has a healthy day.

I have never hit a deer, but I came close twice. It is very scary.
I have only been out of the house three times since our trip to Orlando four weeks ago. I even had drywall delivered.
The increase in cases of this disease is nothing to be fooled with.
Iota became a Hurricane, and a powerful one. I think this cements to 2020 season in the record books for decades to come. Fortunately Florida was spared this year. I sure hope 2021 and 2022 are quiet.
The price of food is going way up down here. Milk, Orange Juice, and Eggs are all still reasonable, but Pasta Sauce, Fresh Fruit, and Meat are all up 20%-25% in just a few months. Maybe it is because so many people are using "free" delivery.
Everyone please stay safe.

Living the dream.
I hit a deer once, up in Maine returning from a ski trip. Small deer and a minivan. The car was driveable, barely, only because it was cold and it was only a few miles back to the resort. The radiator was pushed in, along with the air conditioning radiator. My passengers got an extra ski day while I got the car fixed.
One mechanic said, "How's the cah?"
"See for yourself."
"How's the deah?"
"Well, he ain't complainin'"
Funny thing, though. We had just had that radiator replaced in Massachusetts for about $500. They only charged me $100 in Maine.
I had watched him go into a big box trailer for parts. It was almost empty, but he had the right radiator. I asked him how he happened to have that radiator with such a small inventory.
"That's the cah my mother drives."
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Good Afternoon,
Kevin, I'm finding grocery prices up here especially fresh veg.
The painting on the stock car is going well. My white paint has more gloss than I wanted but all of my flat had dried up. I do have dullcoat though.
Bear, I second the congrats on the food and videos. Sure would like to visit N Z some day.
I've never hit a deer even though I have driven a lot in wooded areas at night. They cut the bush back a long way here to reduce hits and to reduce snow drifts. It also helps to have good headlights. Back in the '70s I had Bosch 7" halogen lights that had 450k candlepower. They were illegal in the U.S. On high beam signs reflected so bright they were hard to look at.

Aircraft Windscreen
I once read that a company had developed a new plexiglass to stop bird strikes from entering the cockpit of aircraft, along with a video showing chickens being shot out of an air cannon at the wind screen of a aircraft--the chicken would hit the screen, and break into parts/pieces, and not damage the aircraft.
Another company wishing to duplicate this test on aircraft of their manufacture set up the same test.
Upon shooting the chicken out of the air cannon, the chicken went through the windshield, the metal bulkhead of the pilots compartment, and ended up near the tail section of the aircraft, effectively destroying the interior of the aircraft.
A querry was sent to the manufacturer of the plexiglass, as to peramiters etc. for the test.

Flo, give the gang and I a Jan Rocket Fuel and Dirk and Robbie a dog treat.
Charlie Good to read the good results on Robbie blood test. Hope the surgery goes great!
Bear Problem with diner food is it leaves me wanting real food. I will say I am getting sick of what I have been eating. Use to eat unbread baked fish 4 days a week and lost 30 pounds. Now baked fish makes me want to blow ash. Liked it at the time?
Train Front Was able to get the coupler installed on the BLI PRR Shark to night. First time I have had the A & B running at the same time with out a derailment. Problem is the A unit that is using Thunder Tennis Balls likes to stall at one spot. I had the dummy B unit behinde the A unit and the second Powered B Unit would cause the A unit to derail.
Phone are out again. I don't care what Charter is calling them selfs today, but they suck rail spikes.
Credit Score I should be at 752 in the next few days. Paying off my last personal loan? Pretty sure I will take a hit there.
Later Ken and Dirk says "Good Luck Robbie Woof, Woof'!

I had a frustrating day. I thought I had all the drywall hung, so I cleaned up the garage and put the new drywall pieces on the bottom of the material stack and carefully placed all the other items on top of them.
Then I went into the guest bathroom and saw I still had two sheets to hang on the wall with the door. I need to move everything again to get to the drywall, and then stack it all back.
I quit for the day out of frustration.
LastspikemikeTo avoid deer strikes assume the animal will continue on its path forwards. Resist the instinctive desire to steer away.
I've never had any close calls with deer, but our pastor said there was no time to even react. The deer ran in front of the car and he hit it, all in a split second.
You're right about the instinctive reaction. When something suddenly appears in front of the car, the natural reaction is to avoid it. I've read the safest thing to do is to just steer straight ahead.
SeeYou190I still had two sheets to hang on the wall with the door. I need to move everything again to get to the drywall, and then stack it all back.
I would laugh, but I've done stuff like this too often. Think how good it's going to feel when it's finished.
Evening all.
It was a beautiful start to the day and I went out and hopped on the Deere for the final cut and leaf chomping of the season. It went from beautiful warm sunshine to cold rain before I finished as if mother nature was telling me that was it for the year.
Got the puppies moved to the dining room for the restoration company to start tomorrow, this is going to be a very inconvenient few weeks as far as cooking and managing the dogs is concerned. I sure wish we still had the trailer.
I have seen a few deer/car meetings but the worst I ever saw was a pickup meets moose, nuff said.
Bear, I took the ferry to the South Island and enjoyed the trip along with a certain lady from Switzerland I met in NZ. It looks like you have a nice view from your deck, it would be a great place to sit with the guitar and a .
Well, I rode for an hour this morning as the tunes on the classic rock station were what I liked and made me really motor. I am about 2000 calories short on the day but I will happily make that up at some point.
Puppies get weighed every day.
All the best to all.

Thanks,
We are deep into lockdown with still some time to go. We are not sure how Christmas will work out. Whether we can see family or not. Her indoors has been wrapping presents up for family in case we can drop them off somewhere for family to collect. A bit of a downer, but it is what it is.
I have to put some paint on one of the kitchen walls, so train services are at a halt.

I woke up sore this morning. I bent over a lot yesterday cleaning the garage, and I am feeling it today.
Time to loosen up and tackle the jobs I want to get done today... on to the last of the drywall (again).
Still trying to get motivated and get to work on this house.
I would rather just sit here and drink coffee. Chloe, I could use another refill.
I have escaped to the office while the restoration company is packing up the kitchen. They will also be moving all the furniture out as well. It is kind of nice watching someone else do the work for a change, I could get used to it.

Where is TF anyway?
Never mind hitting a deer in a car, how about a bear in a plane? Happened Saturday in Alaska.
Ken get your eyes checked. I consider eyes as one of the most organs, right up there with brain heart and lungs. In a addition to diabetes, there is glaucoma and macular degeneration all can be treated to varying extents. I've had temors all my life, but they got worse. Aside from alcohol, my doctor didn't have much to offer except Parkinsons type meds. I started taking Vitamin B12 and it helped significantly.
I missed a deer, but my advice is to look for the 2nd deer that is 25 yards behind. I had to go into full emergency stop for that one.
Saw a small truck that hit an elephant. It was the size of the trucks that are postal carriers use. It looked like someone dropped a giant medicine ball on the top right corner. I don't know how the elephant fared.
I was on my hands and knees weeding on Saturday. We have some sort of aggressive broadleaf weed, and the dandilions that are still blooming. My legs feel like they did when I played tackle football, without equipment in high school. Pass the motrin.

Brent ...... I just read the story in the news. (Fox Business News)
YAKUTAT, Alaska (AP) -- An Alaska Airlines jetliner struck a brown bear while landing early Saturday evening, killing the animal and causing damage to the plane, officials said.
None of the passengers or crew members on board the plane were injured during the accident at the Yakutat Airport in southeast Alaska, The Anchorage Daily News reported.
The Boeing 737-700 killed the brown bear sow, but a cub thought to be about 2 years old was uninjured, Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities spokesman Sam Dapcevich said.
Airport crew members had cleared the runway about 10 minutes before the flight was expected to land, Dapcevich said. The plane landed after dark and crews followed normal procedures for runway checks.
The staff did not see signs of wildlife during the check, but the pilots spotted the two bears crossing the runway as the jet slowed after landing, Dapcevich said.
"The nose gear missed the bears, but the captain felt an impact on the left side after the bears passed under the plane," Alaska Airlines said in a statement.
The pilots saw the bear lying about 20 feet from the center of the runway as the plane taxied to a parking area just before 6:30 p.m., the airline said.
It was not immediately clear how many passengers were on the flight. The plane departed from the town of Cordova and was scheduled to stop in Juneau after leaving Yakutat.
The left engine cowling of the jet was damaged, and the plane remained in Yakutat Sunday.
"Our maintenance technicians are working to repair the plane, which will take a couple of days," Alaska Airlines said.
The airport is partially enclosed by a fence. Employees undergo annual wildlife hazard training and use pyrotechnics or vehicles to herd animals away, the newspaper reported.
Planes previously have been reported to hit deer, geese, caribou and other animals in Alaska, but Dapcevich said this is the first time he was aware of a bear being struck.
Crew members at the Yakutat Airport cleared the bear carcass from the runway. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game was expected to collect the remains, Dapcevich said.

EVERYWHERE LOST; WE HUSTLE OUR CABOOSE FOR YOU
It was in the 60s today. I finally finished the cleanup after last week's ice storm. Whenever I thought I was done, my wife or the neighbors pointed out more branches that needed to be removed.
There is one more branch I could not get, but it is about 35 feet up in the Red Oak tree behind the house. It is a large branch, but if it finally works loose, it will not hit the house. Of course, it may hit me while I cut grass.
Some of the wood I was able to salvage for the fireplace, but most of it got hauled to the dump.
I'm tired, sore, and just about ready to sell my extension ladder so I never have to climb it again. I got my 24 foot extension ladder years ago. After my mother died, I went to visit my 82-year-old father, and he was on the roof of his tall house cleaning the gutters. I didn't get upset at him -- I just borrowed his ladder and never returned it.
At least I still have all my body parts, which is always a good thing after a week using a chainsaw.
Time for Monday Night Football, Bears vs Vikings.
John I've fallen off a couple ladders. It's disconcerting to think, "I should have hit the ground by now"
Sent a new watch to my mother, who is in a nursing home one state away by the USPS This morning it was "Out for Delivery" Tonight it is "Held at the Post Office by request of the customer" Huh?
Ordered something from Amazon. UPS this time. At 8:40 last night it arrived in West Deptford, NJ. At 3 pm today it arrived in Laurel MD and at 7 pm it was back in West Deptford NJ, Laurel is closer to my home in VA, than NJ.
Luckily I didn't fall, but I did come close several times.
BigDaddywho is in a nursing home one state away by the USPS This morning it was "Out for Delivery" Tonight it is "Held at the Post Office by request of the customer" Huh?
If your mother's nursing home is like those in our area, letters and packages are sometimes refused delivery for several days. I don't know what the reasoning is, but evidently they feel that several days of waiting may help stop the virus.

LastspikemikeThe evidence now is quite plain, transmission is almost exclusively by airborne infected droplets with virus load and time period of exposure being the important variables. Infection by contact with supposedly contaminated surfaces (fomites) is just not a significant factor. So, washing your hands is not nearly as important as avoiding possible airborne exposure. Although if you frequently touch your eyes or pick your nose....

Got half the kitchen cabinets out and that took a lot longer than I thought it would. They were just crappy particle board and I guess they figured lots of screws would be required so they would not fall to pieces. They are in a heap out on the front lawn.
We are putting in some high-end stuff and after seeing this garbage fall apart as I removed it I am glad we are spending the money on the good stuff. We have done three of four bathrooms and really upped the quality in those as well. We replaced two of three gas fireplaces with really nice Napoleon ones and will do the third soon.
Floors, windows and the master bathroom are left to do.
TF appears to be missing in action and Ken has not filed his daily report. With that massive germ fest you guys are having down there I am always concerned when the schedule is not being kept.
Time for bed, I have some good RR videos on the bedroom PVR. Have to beat the wife up to the room tonight or it will be reno shows. I hate those.
