RideOnRoad
RYDONRD. It's supposed to be read, "RideOnRoad". A while back my nephew asked me, "Why does your car have plates that say 'Ride-O-Nerd' on them?"

My vanity plate on my 1966 Mercury was:

1LO66HG

I dare your nephew to come up with a more nerdy license plate than that!

I am basking in the coolness provided by my new A/C units. I was pretty impressed they replaced both units--two compressors and two heater/blowers, one in the garage and one in the attic--in just under 12 hours. I really appreciate that they made it one long day. Sleeping with A/C is always nice. (I was not concerned about the extra hours as it was a fixed-price bid.)

I have vanity plates on my car -- RYDONRD. It's supposed to be read, "RideOnRoad". A while back my nephew asked me, "Why does your car have plates that say 'Ride-O-Nerd' on them?" He was completely serious. I am considering getting "HDHC" on my motorcyle. (Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic)

Good afternoon from the West Coast of the Great White North.

Heavy rain and high winds for the next three days and then back for at least a week of sunshine so they say.

I went and picked up my PGE PH2/RDC1 in Vancouver at Central hobbies yesterday along with some bits and bobs I needed. Spent a long time chatting as they are retiring in a year or so, I hope it gets bought and carries on as it has a good reputation, they are first-class people all the way. A new owner will really have to step up to carry on in the same fashion.

My kid went to a Deadpool 2 cast and crew get together, they had so much fun filming that movie the lot of them keep in close touch. The movie biz is back to a going concern and demand is high for help in all areas.

In March the kid was invited to observe the covid-19 response team by a couple of his professors in Ottawa. They were impressed with his contributions and he was given a staff and then took over as lead on the project. We had to take down all his hockey posters and buy him new furniture for his room as he was having online meetings with top UN and Government officials from his bedroom.Laugh He has just been given a grant offer of $100,000.00 to do his master's degree. The University told him they never had an undergraduate run such a big program before. He has to start lecturing as an undergrad as well because the success of their covid response is already being studied at institutions. He is also working for a large association updating their exams to fit with the times all while he is going to school full time. If there was not the occasional noise coming out of his room, we would not know he was alive.Laugh His Mom runs food service to his room.Dinner

My Daughter wants to come home after her first set of exams this weekend, there is no reason to stay over in Victoria as everything is online. With this stormy weather, I hope the ferries keep running. She got $21,000.00 grants this year which is more than she needs for tuition and living so she is happy. Hard work pays off as she well knows. She is smarter than her brother but has to work harder at it to do as well if that makes sense.

Kevin, the tiling looks great, I can't wait to be done what I have to do.

Lion, I looked for the lion long and hard but could not see him. You need to get the chief bean counter at the monastery to spring for a stair elevator for your excursions to the trainroom.

As far as our auto insurance, licensing and testing I have no complaints. The government took over the insurance after repeated warnings to the industry on their practises and pricing. That was forty-seven years ago and the Government corporation was the only place you could insure at. Now the private insurers are back in competition and are behaving themselves as they still have to compete with the government-run insurance corp. They must be making tidy profits or they would not be sticking around I'm sure.

Ken, please keep up with your daily reports the culture of the forum requires it.Laugh

Dave, that Polar Bear habitat looks like a cool place. My sister went to Churchill to watch them, that was a pricy trip.

Henry, glad to see you are settling in, I always thought it took a year for a new place to feel like home.

I always get a kick when you guys down South talk about going up North. To us, North is North of the B.C. Yukon border and the far North is North of the Arctic circle. Laugh

Well time for a shower after my workout and then it is time to unwrap my new RDC and take it for a spin. I ordered an RDC PH2/3 which should be here next month. I can then relive my 14 hour RDC trip from Prince George to North Vancouver in the middle of a blizzard in 1966.Big Smile

All the best to all.

I have not lived in Louisiana for over 25 years, so I don't know how it functions now.

However, when I lived there:

1.  You got the title and plate in an office in downtown New Orleans.  Finding a place to park, getting into the office, waiting in one single line out the door, etc., made it an all-morning event.  I had an experience there one time involving standing in line behind a U.S. Representative that I can't relate here.

2.  You got your car inspection sticker (brake tag) at another place, off of Jefferson Davis Parkway at Bayou St. John.  Normally, you sat in your car waiting your turn, moving ahead one car length at a time until you got into the drive-through building.  Then, depending on the day, hour, and how the inspectors felt, it could go quickly, or it could take hours.

3.  You got your driver's license at the State Patrol office on Veteran's Blvd at the Orleans-Jefferson Parish line.  It was a busy place.  I remember my first time there.  They gave you the written test and told you to take the test at a set of booths that you stood at.  You weren't supposed to talk, but people were asking each other answers and comparing answers, and no one seemed to care.

I imagine things have changed since then.

In KY, our loicense plates also have the county identified.

I pay extra for "vanity" plates for both of my cars. They look just like the standard Florida license plate, but have "Sunshine State" at the bottom instead of my home county.

Someone in here asked earlier about how the threshold tiles worked with the wall tiles I am using.

That was me.  Great idea.  Didn't realize you could get 1/4" backer board to fill the gap too so the tiles sit straight.  The installation looks great!

Say, I think once you are done with all this you deserve a vacation.  Michigan is always nice.  You could even drop by.  Bring your tile tools too.  No reason. WhistlingLaugh

Sorry I haven't piped in much lately.  Life and w*rk have been getting in the way.  The trees I needed removed are now gone.  Company did good work.  The roofers have started too, including adding eaves/overhangs as the garage was built without for some reason (cheap I'm guessing).  They've done a great job so far.  Hope it continues.  It still pains me to pay someone to do it instead of doing it myself.  At least I can't say I would have done better.  They are really doing a fantastic job.

My prayers are with everyone experiencing loss, sickness, or inordinate amounts of stress.

Take care everyone.

DMV,

I now live in Ohio and you can get plates and license at the same place, but titles only at the title bureau (county function) and the title bureau only takes cash. I avoid the lines for plates (stickers) by doing the it online and having it mailed to me.

Alaska, was a joy, all at the same place and they would do weird things like give me a plate when my title was at the credit union in Colorado, no problem, that would never happen in Ohio. Also my company had three trucks which were destroyed out in the bush, but we took the good frame from one, the engine from another and the body from the third and made one truck out of it. No problem again, would not happen in any other state that I have lived in. Also, they wanted you to renew by mail, so there was a $10 charge if you went in person to renew your plates, unless they had been destroyed and you needed new ones.

Gaaaa, the DMV.  Actually, here in Delaware it's done very well and smoothly.  It's a single stop for everything.  Once you've got all the appropriate documentation, you get a number, take a seat and go up when the number is called.  They print the license right there, and you walk out with plates.  The inspection lanes are right outside.

For a change of address, step up to the kiosk with a terminal, enter your new address and push a button.  Presto, a new license, no charge, and your voter registration is automatically changed at the same time.  New photo, too.

Good morning ....

Richard ..... Thank you for the yummy green chile burro.

CN Charlie .... I'm sad to hear about Robbie.

Henry .... I know moving to a new location is a pain. Best wishes to you.

Dave .... You were thinking ahead of where to go in October. Maybe, Michigan would be a good place in the Fall. I recall going to cider mills in October when we live there. Cider with donuts was always good.

Ken ... I always like reading your posts. DIrk must be quite a good dog.

Kevin ... Your tile installation is going well and looks very professional. Mrs. Kevin should be pleased with it . ..... In KY, our loicense plates also have the county identified.

John York 1 ..... The sound of chain saws can be annoying. Hopefully, your neighbors are about done with the tree cutting. ..... Tell them to buzz off !

Steve O .... I hope you are doing well. I guess the Diner has been quiet lately, and therefore so have you.

Last SPike Mike ... Yep .... I see it too. Cheers.

Lion .... Good to see you this morning. Have you been working on you rsubway layout recently ?

Anybody else working on their layouts or model trains ???

Yesterday, I looked through my selection of unbuilt freight car kits. I decided to put together a boxcar, and I began working on it. It's an easy one, and won't take long.

Everybody ..... Have a good day.

Someone in here asked earlier about how the threshold tiles worked with the wall tiles I am using.

This picture shows the process. These threshold tiles make an easy way to make my perfectly level wall tiles meet my not-quite-perfect floor without any weird work being required.

I am up early and feeling great. Chloe, please bring me an egg over easy on top of a stack of whole wheat toast. Oh, coffee too.

Nothing on the agenda for today except for more bathroom tile work.

Good morning, everyone.  I will catch fast food breakfast on the highway.

Another day with not much going on.  My neighbors are all having tree work done.  Lots of chain saws going yesterday.

In Florida we do not have a State DMV. License Plates and Driver Licenses are issued by the County Tax Collector Office. That is why Florida plates have the county on the bottom of the plate.

Our state is the same way.  Our local court house has all car licenses, drivers licenses, registrations, etc., in one office.  Of course, since there are only three people in my county, I have never had to wait for anything there.

"Sorry you only made an appointment for your license, next."

This is how it is in North Dakota. In fact the license plates and registrations are in physically separated offices. There is a Chinese restaurant in between the two offices. : )

In Bismarck they are in the same office but licenses are over here at this end and plates are over there at that end.

Most people makin  reservations would know about that.

You guys would not believe the Bottom Pop-Up Ad I Just had. I cannot even describe it without getting booted off the forum for indecency. I hope that does not happen again. Right now I have one for a local barbeque restaurant. Much better.

Hi Kevin,

I never get pop-up ads when I am on the MR website, other than the ads by MR itself. I use Ad Block and Ad Block Plus. Occassionally they will interfere with viewing a specific website, but they can be disabled for those sites very easily.

https://getadblock.com/

https://adblockplus.org/

I'm not sure if there is an advantage to using both, but better safe than sorry. I have no idea if they will solve your problem but they are free so it might be worth giving them a try.

Cheers!!

Went to the DMV, having made my appointment to get a Virginia license.  In Maryland you get a license at the end, but here they mail you a license.  It was $58 and I said, I'd like to change my title too. "Sorry you only made an appointment for your license, next."

In Florida we do not have a State DMV. License Plates and Driver Licenses are issued by the County Tax Collector Office. That is why Florida plates have the county on the bottom of the plate.

Anyway... I had an amazing experience at the Tax Collector office last month.

I needed to renew the plate on the Impala. We have the option for paying for multiple years, so I was going to do it for two more years.

I was told by the lady that I needed an appointment.

I said I was just there to renew my plate.

She said I need an appointment for all services.

I said OK, how do I make an appointment?

Then she said... never mind, just go to window 1 and they will take care of you next.

I do not understand how that happened, there were probably 30 people waiting, I went right to the window, and in 10 minutes I was done. Impala is good for another two years.

I was quite happy.

Hi folks,

I know that it is a bit early to be talking about the location for next month's Diner, but I need someone else to open the Diner in its new location on October 1st. Dianne and I are heading north to do a fall colour tour, and we are going to visit the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat in Cochrane, Ontario. We won't be back until October 2nd and I wouldn't dare attempt to move the Diner using my cell phone.

When we were talking about where to put the Diner in September, we had discussed going somewhere where the fall colours would be on full display. It was suggested that we would be better to do that in October. I like that idea personally, but ultimately it is up to whomever opens the Diner to make the final decision.

Here is some info on the polar bear habitat:

Charlie sorry to hear about Robbie.  Vets charge full frieght for surgery.  You can't explain to your pet why they have to have it, you can't ask them what they would want.

I have Internet! again.  Was borrowing my neighbors signal which only covered some of the house.  It's not FIOS speed but it's good enough and I don't have to pay Comcast $2K to run the cable.

Went to the DMV, having made my appointment to get a Virginia license.  In Maryland you get a license at the end, but here they mail you a license.  It was $58 and I said, I'd like to change my title too.

"Sorry you only made an appointment for your license, next."

Finding new doctors is equally challenging.  Medical Records at my prior doc's are just answering machines.  Some new docs won't see me until they see my records.

Then there are a lot of nuisance things, Paypal doesn't think my address is real.  I put a new primary address in Chewys but they sent the shipment to my old address.  The postman doesn't come till nearly 5 o'clock and we are still waiting for our private garabage company to show up.

Good Afternoon,

A summer day here with a temp of 80F. Normally it is only 60 at this time of year.

Well, not good news about our little Robbie. He has a liver condition and an ultra sound done last week found a new lump. It could just be a nodule as he has from excess copper but it could also be cancer. It is in a very difficult place so doing a biopsy is a tough operation. Our vet who did the biopsy 2 years ago won't do it. We might get a CT scan done. He is 11 1/2 years old. Not sure what to do. He doesn't display any symptoms other than those shown in blood work.

Neighbour is getting a new driveway so it is very noisy here today chopping up the old concrete. The drive goes from the street beside the house to a garage in the backyard. The drive is right on the property line. Hope they don't damage our fence.

Nothing else new here.

These are the days we wait for all summer long -- low humidity, temperatures in the 70s, light winds.

I am still 2-3 months away from those days, but I get to enjoy them more. They will not be followed by 2-3 months of cold weather! We just get 4 months of paradise every year.

The Tropical Systems have been crazy this year. That is all the news is talking about. You would not even know anything else was going on the world right now. All the local news has is weather and sports now. 90% weather. We had six named storms at once over the weekend.

Where were my manners?  I may be preoccupied up North but I am not too busy to overlook the loss of one of your dear friends.

My friends are Golden and so are yours.

My condolences for your loss of your friend Dan.  That's my little Brother's name.

In our family we have Little Garry.  His Father is Garry Senior that is loved just as much.  There is no Garry Jr.  If you called him that, he would know what you're saying but he would look at you like you didn't.  He is just Little Garry and always makes the best chili at our family get-togethers.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend Dan

Good morning.  Lots of coffee today.

We have a lot of forum diners with health issues or dealing with family tragedies.  I hope each of you can get healing, peace, or both into your life again.

These are the days we wait for all summer long -- low humidity, temperatures in the 70s, light winds.  The only complaint after being outside is that the insects love this weather, too.  We'll put up with insects to sit in the front porch rocking chairs.  Daisy the Dachshund loves being out there, too.

I continue to work on some layout buildings, but more and more, I'm getting the feeling I may need to make major changes to the layout.  When my wife agreed that I could use a spare bedroom for the layout, it was a small undertaking.  Gradually, I have taken over the room.Big Smile

But what started as a small layout has been added onto, and not always with good planning.

I'm not ready to scrap it yet and start over, but I have a feeling that day may come.  I am keeping track of all the mistakes I have made so that I can make improvements next time.

Thanks Ed.

While I like that manufacturers are including parts diagrams, they are sometimes lacking in detail. (And I even found one for a different brand that was incorrect! Fortunately I figured that one out before something broke.)

I wondered if it was bottom cover off first. Now you have confirmed it.
Thanks again!

Now I just need to wait for the snail to bring the Pactra black (Engineering plastic compatible) paint.

Trains - Anyone ever remove side frames from a BLI AC6000? Maybe I'm being too gentle (again), or there's some trick to release some hidden clip I'm missing.

Rick —

Just like Athearn, Atlas, P2K and others, you HAVE to remove the bottom gear cover [76] by unlatching the two end clips as shown in the BLI drawing. There are four prongs that engage tabs on the sideframes to lock them in.

 BLI_AC6000 by Edmund, on Flickr

Once the bottom cover is off the sideframes should slide right out. In many cases the bronze bearing/pickup strip is fixed to the plastic sideframe. You may have to disconnect the wire to completely remove it.

Good Luck, Ed

W*^k - The j*b is going well. Just got notice today we are getting the "hazard pay" from March 13-June 30 this week, so my chiropractor visits just got paid for. (As did a pre-order loco.)

Trains - Anyone ever remove side frames from a BLI AC6000? Maybe I'm being too gentle (again), or there's some trick to release some hidden clip I'm missing. (Found a undec version to custom paint, but the side frames are gray instead of black...)

Caught a NS local outside Erie today, as well as a GE Wabtec rebuild test set with the battery power 3000 in the consist. (Chiropractor office is just a couple of blocks from the plant.)

Birds - Caught a bald eagle with my camera on Friday. Have to get them onto my computer.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night.

Did Dirk wander off with Ken in tow again?

I hope everyone is getting along OK out there. We went to Autumn weather seemingly overnight. It was 42°F last night. I've been stocking up on firewood Yes
