We were the first ones in the aisle but that didn't stop several idiots from crowding in around us to get what they wanted

I needed a 3/4" CPVC elbow today, and I waited about 10 minutes to be able to walk down that aisle, and as soon as I did, sure enough, they all crowded around me.

I think less than 10% of people are even wearing masks... I am!

BATMAN
In 1977 at the ripe old age of 20 I ordered a brand new 1978 van from the factory in Ontario, was excited when the dealer told me it was on the train and picked it up right after it rolled off the delivery truck.

Nice 'Love Wagon'!!! Two of my brothers-in-law had them at about the same time. We borrowed one to tour through the Rocky Mountains and it was a really enjoyable experience. We were in our 20s so the cramped quarters didn't bother us at all. It was the easiest camping that we have ever done!

I am glad to see that you are feeling better! We are still being very cautious about Covid-19. A couple of days ago we were in Home Depot buying hardware for the layout. We were the first ones in the aisle but that didn't stop several idiots from crowding in around us to get what they wanted. I was too darned polite to tell them to back off and wait their turns.Bang HeadDunceGrumpy I figure we will know in about two more days whether or not any of them were positive!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Thank you for the responses to my personal dilemma.

My wife and I have agreed that our plan will be to wait until she passes and let my sister(s) make all first contacts. If my sisters need help after that, I will help my sisters, but not help with anything directly myself.

My older sister has verified there is zero assets known.

Ed ... Thanks for sharing the photo .... I recall riding in that car or the second dome car (Silver Castle). I was upstairs in the dome, but I vaguely recall the seating under the dome. If I recall correctly, the seating was back to back with each seat facing across an aisle towards the windows. I'm not sure, however. I would hope the museum staff has drawings of the original seating arrangement.

Evening all, had a deadbeat day today. Only did a short go on the recumbant bike and burned 500 calories in prep of the pigout the wife was cookin up for dinner. I should be even on the day.

Ed, I just want to say thanks for all the photos and info you post in the diner and on the forum, you are such a wealth of information and I get such an education from your contributions.YesBeer

My sister has been digitalizing all our family photos from slides during the lockdown and there is a lot of them. In 1977 at the ripe old age of 20 I ordered a brand new 1978 van from the factory in Ontario, was excited when the dealer told me it was on the train and picked it up right after it rolled off the delivery truck.Laugh It came with only one seat as ordered as I was to put in swivel, recliner captains chairs. I spent as much again customizing it as it cost me to buy and was worth every penny I spent from the enjoyment I got out of it. When I sold it 14 years later they were lined up to buy it and I got what I thought was a ridiculous price for it. It was definitely one of a kind and highly recognizable around town. This is a pic right after I got it. I had just put on the wheels with TA 50s, put in the sunroof and put on the flared fenders. There was a lot more to follow and I will post pics of how it evolved as my sister sends them to me.

The first dome car was assigned to the Twin Cities Zephyr.

Garry,

I've been in Silver Dome at the Mad River and NKP Museum in Bellevue, Ohio:

The museum staff is trying to "un-Amtrak" the car, i.e. remove the purple carpet from the walls, etc.

Since the floor wasn't dropped below the dome, the headroom is a little tight in there Confused

I hope everyone had a great weekend —

There are quite a few churches in my area with men's groups who, at one time, had dart leagues.  They were serious business.

Since my denomination has a largely German background, beer after the competition was required.

As I recall, the actual rule book of Curling specifies which team buys the beer.

Good morning ....

Brent .... It is good to hear you are feeling better.

Ed ..... I like the video. I recall seeing the E5's when they were still in service. I also remember riding behind one on the Twin CIty Zephyr while seated in one of the original dome cars. ... Congratulations on the award for best in show.

The first dome car was assigned to the Twin Cities Zephyr.

I thought for a moment and grabbed one of my New York Central conductor's caps and a Dietz lantern, a ticket punch and a few old NYCRR tickets and seat checks. Not only did I get a blue ribbon, I got  Best Of Show!   (something Dee Ann hasn't been awarded quite yet) That was the last time she ever invited me to enter anything in the fair

Hi Ed, That's brilliant and well done you for your awards. After that though, I don't suppose it would be safe for you to enter anything in the Fair, on your own accord? As for skullduggery, it is amazing just how seriously some people will take a hobby.

Kevin, If you Google a 'Winmau' Yorkshire Board, there is no inner Treble ring. However Boards with Treble Rings are much more common in the UK (Yorkshire is just one County i.e. State) The Boards capable of, "one-hundred-and-eighty" (loud cheer form the audience) are always used in Darts League Cash-prize Competitions, as on TV. 501 or 301, doubles in and out, just the same. Kevin, check what the state will cover as far as what expenses they will cover for someone with no assets. It is a different culture up here and the Provincial Government will cover the cost of burial, cremation and a simple service up to $5000.00 for someone with no assets.

If there is no Executor to deal with her affairs (estate) walk away. Rational thinking is often not on the top of the list at times like this. The funeral biz is a racket, why pay for a service no one attends. If the State will pay for cremation, maybe your sisters can spread the ashes in a nice spot and leave it at that.

I have spent at least 20 hours this week as an Executor of an American lady that ask me to be her Executor 30 years ago. It is not my first time in the role and I have never taken a dime for being an Executor for an Estate I have looked after. Of course the devil is in the details but from what little you have divulged and from what I know, if your sisters can get something together with the State financing the service fine, if not I would not touch it. A little time for the dust to settle may make your sisters thinking a little bit more complete as far as how to proceed. But then I don't get called Mr. Spock for nothing, I tend to be able to look at things from a completely rational point of view and little emotion.

I am still feeling off, not enough to slow me down other than being a bit tired all the time and a slight headache off and on. We were talking to some of our friends that are MDs including an ER Doc and they all said it sounds like Covid just but the way it hit me. My Daughter got nailed the same way as well but she is feeling 100% now. We are wondering who gave it to who.Laugh

Covid is well under control here and I think it was handled as well as it could have been. I give full credit to our health personal and to the politicians for staying out of it.

Good article in the New York times no less on how B.C. managed it with great success.

Ed, do you enter your Asparagus in local-growers competitions?

Hi, Paul. You're kidding, right?  Dee Ann enters EVERYTHING in the Geauga County Fair (Ohio's Oldest, since 1823).

 Fair_prize by Edmund, on Flickr

The fair is in late August so you don't see much asparagus, but everything else under the sun is there! I sure hope it is not cancelled this year but I'm not holding much hope.

One year they had a theme for a category that included something antique, pre 1950, or some such. Dee Ann asked me if I had anything railroady I wanted to enter.

I thought for a moment and grabbed one of my New York Central conductor's caps and a Dietz lantern, a ticket punch and a few old NYCRR tickets and seat checks. Not only did I get a blue ribbon, I got  Best Of Show!   (something Dee Ann hasn't been awarded quite yet) That was the last time she ever invited me to enter anything in the fair Zip it!

Similar to your asparagus competition, there is a stiff competition here for honey, which, allegedly, there has been some skullduggery afoot in trying to best the competition. I can say no more Blindfold

All in good fun Big Smile

I hope everyone is holding up OK in the face of these wearisome times. Angel

Cheers, Ed

Kevin .... My .... At this stage of your life, your relationship with your wife is most important. So, the two of you should be in agreement with whatever you decide regarding your sisters .

You are right about that Garry. My wife, and her family, mean infinitely more to me than my sisters do. I am much closer to my wife's sisters than I am to my own. All the nieces, nephews, and other relations I mention in here are all her side of the family.

You will never lose by attending the Funeral. At the very least, you and your sisters will get together. Maybe there will be a nice meal.

If there is to be a funeral, I will be paying for it. Neither of my sisters can contribute, they are both unemployed high school teachers.

Lazers
In the USA, your Boards have an inner Treble circle (I think) where as in Yorkshire, we mostly have an outer Double circle only. Playing 'Doubles' is the best way of practicing there is, IMO

Every dart board I have played has a triple loop towards the center. In league we played 301, needing to double in and double out.

This is going to sound stupid... I assumed that in the UK dart boards had a triple loop also... because... in the 1981 movie An American Werewolf In London, when David is watching television in Alex's flat, the dart game he watches shows the players hitting all three darts into triple 20s.

Please don't tell me that 1980s American horror movies are not a great place to learn about life in the UK!

Hi everyone and sorry to hear of sadness and dilemas, but Best Wishes to all.

Ladies, please could I sample a pint of 'Junk Yard King Size' and possibly Henry might like to try some too, as well as anyone else of course.

I was switching at Hiawatha Elevators in this evening's episode of 'Back to the Future - 2014', on Youtube. This was followed by North Town Yard 2014 and 2017. Normally I like watching Hump-yards - but not the speeded-up footage of the latter. It is interesting to note the way that Plate F Hi-Cubes have now taken over today's Boxcar line-ups.

Sandjam, the RRVW looks good and I am saving it for when we cross County Line.

Ed, do you enter your Asparagus in local-growers competitions? It's is a pretty hot topic in the UK and certain Dick Dastardly's will go any length to sabotage their competitors crop - which happened to my neighbour, last year (not me, I hasten to add) Like you, I just prefer to champ it with my dinner.

TF, that train looks cool. Do Kato make precision Darts as well? In the USA, your Boards have an inner Treble circle (I think) where as in Yorkshire, we mostly have an outer Double circle only. Playing 'Doubles' is the best way of practicing there is, IMO

23:39 and I can hear the Bionic Woman staggering around in the Kitchen, so I'd better say 'out' for now. Paul

TF .... Wow .... That is very nice.

Kevin .... My My 2 Cents .... At this stage of your life, your relationship with your wife is most important. So, the two of you should be in agreement with whatever you decide regarding your sisters .

CN Charlie .... Yes, our boyhood experiences stay with us. I recall a train trip from Tennessee to Chicago when I was maybe three or four years old. . I remember sleeping in an upper berth of a heavyweight sleeping car. Later, we moved to Chicago area, and we lived very close to the CB&Q. We were so close to the tracks that my bedroom door rattled on its hinges when a large steam locomotive was chugging through town. We stayed there as I grew up, and I have many memories of Burlington trains I could see from my bedroom.

Kevin, you've received a lot a good advice already.

SeeYou190
From what I have been told, she has been in a Nursing Home for the last few years, and there are no assets. Since my father died unexpectedly in Texas without a will, she inherited nearly all of his estate (except for some real property that was in Iowa), then her next husband got everything. There is nothing left of my Father's to worry about.

My Mom died a decade ago. She was in a nursing home, and as they are very costly, it ate up all her assets. Once that happens, Medicaid (aka Medical Assistance) takes over payments to the nursing home, in the case of long term care. She had a will, but my attorney told me since no assets, it was unnecessary to open an estate with the local Wills Office. I would assume the same is true in the case of no will. No assets is the key that you need to confirm. If true, there will be no estate to worry with.

SeeYou190
I guess the real question is how this will effect my relationships with my sisters if I opt-out.

Yes, I would agree that this should guide your decision. With no estate to worry with, it's really all about the funeral or memorial.

Good Afternoon,

Kevin, I have read what you posted about your dilema. I can't comment on the aspect of your relationship with your sisters but I am looking at it from a legal perspective. I would tred very carefully if I were you. I have been an executor and I handled all the legal dealings for the company I worked for including a lot of litigation. It can get incredibly expensive if you make a decision that later gets challenged by someone.

The GF has been outraged about everything lately.  She's from the Washington, DC, area, and rabidly follows politics constantly.  So, now she is furious at governors and mayors from coast to coast.  Besides that, she's angry at her uncooperative sister.  They are selling their late father's condo, and the sister wants to keep it for her own occasional use, she can't afford to buy the GF out, and the fees are high enough that any rental income is pretty much taken away.

All of this anger gets rechanneled at me.  I will be very glad when the rage everyone is feeling over this virus is over, but there seem to be those perpetuating the anger for their own selfish purposes.

Good afternoon.

Kevin, I'll probably echo what others have said.  Your relationship with your sisters may be at stake if you refuse to help.  Families have broken up over things much more unimportant than this.  I guess if it was me, I would help the sisters.

Since there have been marriages and other families involved, I would hire a lawyer first.  The lawyer should understand there may be very little estate left, and that his work may be for free.  I think there are reputable lawyers out there who are willing to help in matters like this.  Having a lawyer helps out if, as Attuvian said, someone you don't know shows up in a year demanding to know what happened.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
