Good Evening!

I was feeling quite depressed today, but now I am happy again. Each evening, I check the Danish real estate platform to see the new listings. Most of them are either too expensive or simply junk, but today I found a house which is just a dream!

Here are some pictures:

The main house

The garage

House and garage viewed from the backyard

The drive way

The house is on a 3/4 acre plot of land, mainly lawn. everything appears to be well kept. The asking price is about $130k, which is what our friend and us can just afford!

I have sent an email to the real estate agent this afternoon and will ring him up tomorrow morning! If everything goes well, Petra and I will be off to view the place early next week! It´s less than 3 hours away from us. If someone would move the house 10 miles west to the (German) island of Sylt, the same place would go for $4 million!

I am all excited! Keep your fingers crossed!

Happy times!

Good Morning All,

60's and sunny here for once. Rain for tomorrow though probably the remnants of what you all are getting in the midwest.

One of those Frito pies sounds good today - I'll have that and an RBF with it please.

You are correct Garry. I grew up a block from the New Haven 4 line main and have been within a mile ever since (excepting time spent out of state of course). I was a toddler when the last steam ran so I don't remember any of that but the electrics especially the EP-5 Jet and the other electrics I do. Riding to and from my Grandmothers to visit we usually took the train and walked from the station to her house which wasn't too far. My father and grandfather both commuted by train so yes I guess it all got ingrained from an early age.

Still plastering the parking lot though I'm getting closer to done. Picked up more stuff for the backdrops this morning on my way in to the shop. Two gensets done, one out to repair, one to plant in a trailer and one left after that to fix. Making progress at last.     Time to get back to it.  Ciao, J.R.

MLC .... Raining here also because of the same storm system.

Ed .... LOL with your second photo.... Are you competing with Bear?

We saw three more minks yesterday. It must be the year for them. ... Also, we are getting too many Canadian Geese. Zillions of them.

Good morning.

Hot and humid right now, but big storms on the way should cool it down.  I mowed the lawn early this morning to beat the rain.

Kevin, it sounds like you have taken the best route with your family. Hope everything works out.

Yes, my wife is very good at pointing out things I really already knew.

She pointed out that I have a HUGE loving family that came with her into our marriage, then we added to the mass, and they all love me. Neither of my sisters have anything like that, and they are looking for family anywhere they can grasp for it.

This woman is not my family, but my sisters are, so we will support my sisters and no further.

Back when I was born - Minneapolis, 1958 - the Twin Cities alone had 9 large railroads: Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Burlington Route, Milwaukee Road, Chicago & North Western, Chicago Great Western, Minneapolis & St. Louis, Rock Island, and Soo Line; plus shortlines Minneapolis Northfield & Southern and Minnesota Transfer. Go back to 1954 and you could add the Twin City Lines streetcar system. Outside 'the cities', in the far south you had an Illinois Central branchline coming up from Iowa, and Green Bay and Western had some trackage in Winona MN, on the west bank of the Mississippi. In the far north, a short section of Canadian National's mainline ran along the south shore of Lake of the Woods, connecting with Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific and Minnesota Dakota & Western. In Duluth you had the Missabe Road, Duluth South Shore & Atlantic...and although it primarily served Superior WI, I think Lake Superior Terminal and Transfer had some trackage in Duluth. Of all those, only CN is still around.

Hi Stix,

Thanks for providing the lists! So many railways!!

Good evening, everyone.

Ulrich, that's good news about Denmark.  After the estate settlement, you can do some serious house hunting.

Kevin, it sounds like you have taken the best route with your family.  Hope everything works out.

Another long hot day.  The 9th day in a row over 90° with high humidity.  This kind of weather reminds me of the southern U.S.  You can go outside at midnight and the temperature is still in the high 80s.  You can tell I wouldn't survive in Florida or Arizona.

Working in the garage is hot, sweaty work.  Finally, the end of the garage project is in sight.  Maybe tomorrow.

I had to make a run to Menards in Lincoln, NE, today.  I was surprised that no one was allowed in the store without a mask.  I had one, but they had some at the desk for $1.00.  A big sign at the front said no one comes in without one.  The store was crowded, but everyone honored the sign -- I didn't see a single person without a mask.

I know several of you diners are battling health issues.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.

When my youngest daughter got married at a cabin on a Minnesota lake, we stayed at this resort called Chase on the Lake.  Nice place.

Minnesota's license plate says "Land of 10,000 Lakes", but I read the state actually has over 11,500 lakes.

Frito pie in our house is a little different. We first had it when we lived in upstate NY many, many years ago. For us, a Frito pie consists of the following:

  • Fritos (Goes without saying)
  • Mashed pinto beans with green chiles and Monterey Jack cheese
  • Taco sauce
  • Grated cheddar cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Sour cream
  • Ketchup (Yup, that's right, ketchup. Don't knock it until you try it.)

That is a Frito pie in our house. As a matter of fact, that was our dinner last Saturday.

Minnesota had the Northern Pacific, Great Northern and The Milwaukee railroads, and it still boasts four Class I railways, two regional (Class IIs) and several shortlines.

Back when I was born - Minneapolis, 1958 - the Twin Cities alone had 9 large railroads: Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Burlington Route, Milwaukee Road, Chicago & North Western, Chicago Great Western, Minneapolis & St. Louis, Rock Island, and Soo Line; plus shortlines Minneapolis Northfield & Southern and Minnesota Transfer. Good evening diners. I got called into work today and actually did some - first time in 2 months! It's gone Teatime in the UK (19:22) and tonight Ladies I would like to sample some Minnesota delicacy; 'Tater Tot Hotdish' and a Pint of 'Surly Darkness' beer, anyone.

I'm glad things seem to be settling down a bit for people. Brent, I dig 'Mystery Machines'. I like seeing all photos on this site.

Ulrich, last time we moved home (at Mrs. L's insistance) it took us 6 months to complete - if that's any consolation. We've spent @£20k on this place and we will never get it back (been married for 44 years and I gave-up arguing 43-1/2 years ago)

Last evening it was Progressive Rail and then I found the DM&IR, pre & post CN. What great footage that was. Those dinky little Ore-cars make the trains seem twice as long - if that makes any sense? Paul

"It's the South Shore Line, Jim - but not as we know it".

Howdy .

Ulrich .... Congratulations for getting the approval. Sooner or later the right house will become available. Start packing. Smile

Dave .... That is very interesting about the mink at your dock. We hardly ever see minks. Foxes are much more common.

JR .... I think you and I are like most model railroaders because we model what we saw when we were young. As I say, I grew up next to the CB&Q, and they were all EMD in the 1950's except for some yard switchers. Perhaps, it was the fact that EMD ws located in La Grange, IL which was a station on the CB&Q. I did railfanning of other roads in Chicago area, and I recall seeing the ATSF Alco PA's from time to time.

I never saw Santa Fe 90 (FM Erie Builts), but I always liked seeing pctures of them. Here is a photo that just showed up on Facebook.

Below is a picture of my HO ATSF 90 with the Super Chief.

Good Morning All,

A regular and a blueberry donut please Zoe.

I'm sorry to see so much illness and worry in here of late. My best wishes to those of you recovering and I hope family members recover quickly and fully as well.

Kevin - to my thinking, the most important part of the debate on the step-mother issue was the "my wife and I have agreed" part. We went through the probate stuff for my mother who passed in Canada with all their crazy probate laws and taxes and my mother in law who had been in a nursing home after assisted living was not enough. My mother in law had been a ward of the state so there was no money involved and probate was fairly easy (we did still have to go through that in Ct.). My mom had been predeceased by my father but still had a house and assets. The decline was long enough that all of us kids were able to meet and work out a plan that avoided the all to common stressers that arise in these circumstances. We had all been estranged and moved away from each other but a face to face of the principles and a few bottles and some intense conversation got it all worked out.

Garry - being a New Haven enthusiast I'm more and Alco guy but those E series diesels are true classics and just gorgeous. GE did most all the electrics and we didn't really have any GM stuff until the FL9 and a few Geeps right at the end.

Our new next door neighbors and the albino skunk that lives in their back yard met last evening. Hopefully none of them got a direct hit. It took us the better part of a month to get the smell out of our mutt when she got too close. And yes we tried every remedy that didn't sound dangerous.

Not too much to report on the layout front. I'm still struggling with the parking lot and road at the back. I wish at this point I hadn't been too idle to go get more of the 1/8" foam sheets from the craft store. I have come to the conclusion I am terrible with drywall mud.

Time to pick up tools and get going. I have a bunch of trailer work to do and I can see the first weekend of the renewed season barrelling at me.  Ciao, J.R.

Good morning all.  Chloe, a large coffee and a cinnamon roll please.  The big one with pecans all over it.

Feeling a little sore this morning.  My neighbors are both in their mid-late seventies and asked if I would be willing to replace the boards on their deck with Trex decking.  The original boards were starting to lift here and there creating trip hazards for them.  The bulk of the supplies showed up Saturday, so guess how I spent my weekend.  The only thing lacking was the three trim boards didn't show up, so there will be that to finish.  Minimal repairs were needed on the frame, so that was good. Yes  The whole deck basically sits right on the ground, so it was all up/down/up/down all day for two days.  I'm paying for it this morning!

We saw a mink on our shore yesterday. It was probably looking for a fish to eat.

Hi Garry,

We used to get mink under our dock at the cottage. We would sit on the dock at night so we had a clear view of the skies and many times the mink would sit on the dock floatation right underneath us and crunch away on crawfish. We were thrilled to be in their company despite the noise!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaughThumbs Up

Good evening ....

As I mentioned CB&Q did sometimes run E5's to the Twin Cities on its Twin Cities Zephyr. (E7's were more typical, however.)

Here is my E5A and E5B.

..

Kevin ... It is good to hear your wife and you agreed on a good plan to hanlde the situation. ... It is best to make the right decision and stick with it. The rest of your life, you must live with your choices.

....

Regarding the virus, we continue being hermits as we have done for 12 weeks. I did get the boat in the water, and it is nice to take it out in the lake.
