RideOnRoad

I am back home after being up in Flagstaff for the birth of my gransdon. Yesterday morning I held a human that had only been breathing air for 2 1/2 hours. The last time I held a baby that young was when I held his mother over 26 years ago.

Good news, Richard ! ......... Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hey Richard!

Congratulations to you and your daughter and your son-in-law!! I'm sure the experience was incredible!

Dianne and I are still a couple of years away from that stage in our lives. We are looking forward to it.

Richard,

Congrats on your promotion to be GrandPa....

It also makes you aware of your own mortality, having been lucky enough to be a GP 3 times...

Enjoy the upgrowing of the little one, it goes way too fast, and before you know they go off to school...

Dave keep an eye on your wife. My FIL found himself laying on the ground with the dog sitting next to him in a remote part of the local park. He had slipped on some ice and thought he just fell but then realized there was a bunch of snow on him and the dog so figured he knocked himself out cold for quite a while. He went to the Doc and had scans and all was good. A little over a year later he got dizzy all of a sudden and went to the Doc who called an Ambulance and they got him into Vancouver and right on the table to fix a bad brain bleed. Looking at the old scans, there was nothing to indicate the two instances were connected but as they said, they couldn't be 100% sure

That is the scary part about head injuries. They can haunt you for the rest of your life. Dianne is improving slightly. We see the doctor on Thursday to have the stitches removed and to see if there is something else we can do. She is going stir crazy. She hasn't looked at an electronic screen of any sort since the fall last Thursday, and she can't even read the newspaper without getting lightheaded.

Thanks for your concern.

As far as retirement is concerned, I'm sure you will get there when you are ready. I am so glad to be retired that I can hardly express the words. My job selling installed home improvements for Sears Canada had become a nightmare. One in three customers was getting screwed because of bad terrible workmanship. Management was so incompetent that they made the situations worse.

I figured that you have a strong work ethic!

Looks like two units going very fast backed into each other.

Our engines usually have a cab at each end.

Good afternoon all, it is a sunny 12c on the West Coast.

I need to hop on the Deere as the monsoons are moving in tonight for a number of days and I want to vapourize the plate size maple leaves that are all over the place.

Did an extra few km on the bike this morning as I really pigged out this weekend with all the good food around, I'll do an off day burn tomorrow just to be sure, maybe a quick 1000 calories.

Charlie, if we leave big branches out at the street the city will come and grind them up for $25.00. Not many people know about the service but I use it all the time. They did charge me $50.00 for this pile though. Still a really good deal.

Daughter catches the 0700hrs ferry in the morning and #1 son flies in on Friday for his nine-day break. He writes his mid-term and goes right to the airport as soon as he is done. He speaks French and Spanish fluently and scoots right through security in the multi-lingual line where there is never a wait. Laugh

Father in law bought a new Mercedes SUV and on their first trip upcountry had a muffler off the big truck in front of them hit them. They were doing 130 kph and the damage was extensive.

Well, best stopped being a deadbeat and get mowing.

What are you guys talking about?!?! I LOVE the GE GEVO line and most of the geeps and SD's of today. Modern locomotives look COOL!

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

Today , we are very concerned about our brother-in-law in Nashville. He is having surgery tomorrow to replace a heart valve. The operation is expected to be 6 hours.

While not a walk in the park, this type of surgery is a routine job. Like with any surgery, there is a risk attached to it, the main one being having to rely on artificial respiration for that long a time. An incorrect monitoring of the oxygen level caused my mother to develop vascular dementia, an illness quite similar to Alzheimer´s. Angel for your BIL´s recovery!

I recall when diesel locomotives were made to look good

Those were the days railroads were run by railroaders and not controllers! Railroads took pride in the looks of their engines, which they don´t do these days. Engines are just a piece of expensive equipment, designed to do the job and nothing else. They are not seen as brand ambassadors, which really is a pity.

Just to see how Diesel engine design evolved from the 1950s to present day in my country...

1950s:

1960/70s:

Today:

While not as ugly as the EMD class 66, the new generation of mainline Diesel locomotives by Bombardier don´t look much different from their electric cousins, which have a rather unprepossessing appearance to my eye.

Happy times!

Good Morning,

We had a major storm on Friday and Saturday here. A Colorado low brought heavy wet snow and high winds that knocked out power to thousands and also damaged thousands of trees. The tree damage was worse than normal as many still had their leaves so the heavy wet snow caused limbs to snap. We had an old crabapple tree in our back yard that lost at least half of its limbs. Really sad looking now as it was a beautiful tree. We also had a major 'stalk' of a pyramidal cedar snap off. My wife and I were up most of Friday night knocking snow off of tree limbs with a couple of long poles. We were able to save our pine tree that way and a few large cedar shrubs. I now have a large pile of limbs I had to cut sitting in the middle of the back lawn. All I had to cut was a limbing saw which was slow work on a 4" limb especially as the wood was very wet. We have never had a storm like that in October.

Today I will start cleaning up the branches piled on the back lawn. It will take a few days. Not sure what to do with them as all the tree services will be busy. I will try to cut and bundle it hoping the city will pick it up on refuse day.

Just a few miles east of the city they got rain and a few miles west they got twice as much snow.

Bear, lamb chops with mint sauce was my Father's favourite dish. I like lamb especially a nice roast. My wife can't stand it but her family never ate it. Perhaps it is something you have to grow up with.

Jimmy, I only had a few girl friends as a young man and met my wife when I was 33 so don't give up hope. I was fussy and a bit shy I suppose.

Well time to get going. It is only about 35F outside so I won't be going out for very long. Besides we have a hoard of Juncos here that are desperate to get some food after the storm.

Good morning

York 1 / John .... Thanks for the big breakfast.

Ken ...  I'm glad you are enjoying Dirk ,  but it is sad his original owners could not keep him.  It must be difficult for a pet to be separated from people who had been taking my care of him.

Ulrich ... I recall when diesel locomotives were made to look good , and I remember the transition in the 1960's to Second Generation locomotives .  For example EMD F units were replaced with locomotives such as GP40's.  The F's looked better.

Ray ... I hope you enjoy your date at the concert.

Bear ... The pavlova looks good.

Good morning.  Too cold to walk outside this morning, so I hit the college field house again.  Around and around in a 200 meter circle.  Not my favorite thing to do, but the walk always does me good.

Not much going on today.  My wife still wants to see the Downton Abbey movie.  She never missed an episode, so I will probably take her to that this evening.  Not something I look forward to.  I didn't watch the TV series, and I have no desire to watch the movie.

Have a good day, everyone.

Edit:  I see that for the second time in a row, I'm on top!

My treat this morning.  Start with a Bloody Mary, then a full breakfast.  The best meal of the day.

Good Morning!

The day started dry - for a change! We had enough water coming down in this what is supposed to be the driest year in history!

Bear - that cake looks fantastic! Strawberry and Kiwi - my favorite!

The KiwiRail class DL certainly does not win a beauty contest, but does it get uglier than this?

Apparently, the days wwhen railroads cared about the design of their engines are long gone! Remember those elegant PRR GG1s, the EMD Fs, the Deutsche Bahn V200 or the classic and ageless design of Swiss standard and narrow gauge engines of the 1940s till the 1980s! Modern Diesels are eyesores on wheels compared to them!

Happy times!

Better still, retire!

Her-in-doors won’t let me, and even worse suggested I worked for her!!!!

The Bear could never be regarded as a “Ladies Man”. While a lot of girls were pleased to have the Bear as friend, that’s as far as it went, which was slightly confusing and sometimes disappointing, but hey…!!!
I was sure I was going to remain a single man, but at 31, and because of a blind date that I really didn’t want to go on, I met her-in-doors and was married within 6 months. Later I found that there was a “book” running on how long I would remain married, 3 months to 2 years were short odds, but that was 29 years ago, I still find that amazing, occasionally!!

I found this video and while it features a KiwiRail class DL (Dreadful Locomotive) at work, it’s in my neck of the woods, the Bay of Plenty.

“I wanted to invent an engine that could run for ever. I could have developed a new train, had I stayed in the railway. It would have looked like the AK-47 though.”

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Thanks, Ed and a Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canucks and any other country that may be celebrating this weekend. We had a big crowd in tonight to enjoy the feast my wife prepared. I pitched in as well but she is the gifted cook that ensures perfection.Dinner

I have a lot to be thankful for as I have had a very comfortable life. I worked hard for it and had bumps along the way, some huge. But every time we just deal with them and never waste time dwelling on them and carry on.

As far as girls went, I always seemed to have a drop-dead gorgeous girlfriend. I am not a gorgeous hunk that no girl can resist that is for sure, so I put it down to my rather adventurous lifestyle that attracted women that also shared my passion for excitement and travel. I had four serious longterm relationships between high school and age 38, none of whom I wanted to marry as they just were not the right ones. I knew my wife for 14 years as a friend but never considered her as anything but a friend as she was a gifted Veterinary Surgeon that was always on call in case a police dog needed putting back together or some other emergency and she worked long hours to boot. I lived a very carefree lifestyle and would hop on a plane to go somewhere in a moments notice. She has degrees in agriculture, genetics and is a Veterinary Surgeon, I just graduated high school. Total opposites in every sense of the word. She looks just like Meryl Streep did 15 years ago when she was my wife's age and my wife will often get asked if she is her when we are at the airport or other public places.

I had been going out with a real knock out for several months but she was dumb as dirt and so I ended that. At that time my future wife and I started to hang out more just as friends and I fell in love with her. I never wanted to marry anyone before then and then one day I knew without a doubt she was the one, so 9 days before my 40th Birthday we got married in Hawaii at the Hyatt on Kaui. I always tell people that tell me they are not sure they should get married or not to a certain person. I say the fact you are asking that question is your answer. I never wanted anything more than to be with her for the rest of my life. Maybe I just needed to slow down a bit before I was ready to get married.

I retired at 52 for health reasons and my wife who is five years younger than me retired when she was 52 as she was suffering some neurological issues. We were set for retirement by then so why not, life is short.

Looking at the old scans, there was nothing to indicate the two instances were connected but as they said, they couldn't be 100% sure.

Speaking of parks, the weather has been great here so we have been going on some long walks with the dogs. We have a wilderness area that goes on forever even beyond the park boundaries and we will often come across movies and/or TV shows being filmed. On Wednesday we came across Batwoman being filmed and watched for a few minutes and carried on, then we came upon Sabrina the teenage witch (Not sure about the name) and then the show Riverdale not far away from that. It is a busy place our piece of wilderness.Laugh Lots of work for thousands of people so all is good.

The kid got a new blooper video from Deadpool 2 sent to him and his one and only big screw up was on it. I'll never forget how upset he was about that when he came home that night. They laughed it off on the set at the time but it took 40 minutes to reset the scene to do it again. It was after 16 hours on set and he was really tired and went brain dead. That was the only screwup he ever had on all the things he has worked on.

Daughter came home for the weekend. The ferries were so busy there was a wait even for walk-ons. She got the second to last ticket for her sailing. It would only be an hour wait if she didn't get on. BC ferries do an excellent job.

Well, I think I'll turn in early tonight. While working on the big dinner I did more lights in the Roundhouse and got the interior done. Lots of work, but I am happy with it.

All the best to all.

Brent

Ed Thanks for the link. I will either buy off Egg Head or Amazon and it will be a refurbished unit. I like the 16 gigs of ram!

Meg, Gig sure, it all comes out in the wash Whistling That was only an example, Ken. I bought the last one maybe two years ago. Still going strong, though. If you need a CD/DVD drive be sure there is one on board as many mini-towers don't have them any more. Kids look at CDs like they are vintage-retro things from another age.

Timmy, Your photo with the excellent cat reminds me of a few photos I have when I dozed off and Floyd snuggled up next to me. Shortly after Floyd was killed by a neighbor's dog that got loose another golden tabby named Cicero appeared on our property almost like a gift!

 Floyd-2010 by Edmund, on Flickr

There's a blue rubber band there. Floyd used to love to chase a rubber band when you shot it and he would bring it back to you so you could shoot it again. We could never tire of this. He'd play like that for a long time. Part retriever.

"Are you sure that's where the pole is supposed to go?" Checked the drawing twice.

Evenin' folks....

Been a very busy week again around here and I just haven't had any time to post.  Have been keeping up with others though.

Dating game......  Well, I may be 72, but I still feel the same as some of the youngsters in here about the process!  I think George Burns was right (as always) when he said "Age is just a number.  Most of us feel about the same as our shoe size."  Just got off the phone with the lady I have been dating, and she agreed to let me take her to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestera with Winton Marsalis Concert at Kodak Hall at Eastman School in Rochester in a couple weeks.  I must like her!  This will set me back well over a hundred $$$ and possibly more if we go out to dinner as well....  (She's worth every penny!)

I will say that I too get worried about the future of relationships just like the younger crowd.  After all I lost my soul-mate over 32 years ago and figured I would spend the rest of my life alone.  Sermon at church today was about being thankful....  I told Pastor Deb that was good advice and I think I'll just be thankful for each day at a time and let the future take care of itself!  I am enjoying being out with the lady every now and then.  Wish it was more often that I get to see her, but time will tell. I guess.

Have a good one!

 Eveing Diners

Flo, get the gang and I a Beer please and Flo Dirk all ready had his treat tonight.

Work was boring even with Nancy there. It was a beautiful day and with the weather we have had I did not excpct many customers. We had 2 of them. Nancy likes to tell ever one she is the owner, yet she has no clue what stuff is? Whistling Case in point she yelled up to the front of the store to me her customer was buying a Accolade Memeory Foam Mattress for $344.00 in full sizes. Turns out after the deal was done and loaded in there truck it was a Tribute Memeory Foam Mattress thats price should have been $499.00. Some how this is my fault? Surprise

Ed Thanks for the link. I will either buy off Egg Head or Amazon and it will be a refurbished unit. I like the 16 gigs of ram!

Dirk Pip He is eating up my free time but I do enjoy the time with him. Guess I am trying to make up to him lossing his first family. He had to come from a good home, it is a shame they had to let him go. We where told there Land Lord said they could no longer have pets.

 Later Ken

Im really about ready to give up on finding someone. 27 and only been on two dates in my life. Both ended with the woman saying i was roo strange to date again. Did everything - paid for her, was a gentleman towards her, etc. Heck ive never even kissed a woman lol. So yeah, this wallflower is feeling pretty hopeless in that regard.

I was just shy of 36 on wedding day in 1981; we had 34 years 3 1/2 weeks before she passed in 2015.  I had thought I was a confirmed single (but you never know).

I have alway's been a bit "off" when it come's to dealing with re-ality.

I get along better with my cat's, than I do with the rest of humanity.

But then this woman came along, and made the mistake of picking up the rock I was under...

Was the second marrage for both of us.

BONUS: she doesn't mind my tendancy to fiddle with tiny model's ..... she even got me this workbench.

She can also cook up a storm !! ( I use to weigh 190 lbs .... now I'm a bit over 230....)

Morale of the story is : you will find someone, just be yourself....... and dont eat ALL the cake she put's in front of you.......

Rust...... It's a good thing !

Good Sunday morning.  Just coffee for me this morning.  I will have some donuts later.

My wife is buying Christmas stuff.  Online buying has allowed her to spend money easily and freely.  If I complain, I am reminded how much my Kato E9 A&B locomotives and the full City of Los Angeles passenger car set cost.  It's better if I just keep my mouth closed, smile, and nod.

Time for church.  Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

Jimmy - don´t sell yourself short! The right girl is right behind the corner!

I was a "little strange" myself, not really what most of the girls were looking for. Not "freaky" enough for the late 1970s, a little shy and certainly not what you would call good looking. I was more of the type prospective mothers in law would envision for their daughters, but, alas the daughters didn´t think so. My girlfriend in France had just broken up with me, when I met Petra on the way home and it was as if lightning had struck us both! I moved into her place three days after we first met, and we were engaged 6 weeks later!

Things always happen when you expect them the least!

Happy times!

Ive never had lamb myself, too expensive for my taste.

My taste in music is classic rock, older country (with some new), and underground rock.

Have a great day all

Good Morning!

Sunday! Time for my big breakfast! Oh, wait! I already had that yesterday! Well, who cares, I am going for it!

Southern Germany is enjoying a resurrection of Summer, while in my neck of the woods, the sunshine falls down in liquid form. The clouds are so low we don´t see nor hear the migrating birds heading south! No "Golden October" for us this year.

I used to hate lamb with a passion, and the mint sauce made it seem even worse.

While "statíoned" in Britain, I had the pleasure of being served lamb quite a number of times and with or without mint sauce, I grew a strong dislike. I will remain a "beefeater" for the rest of my days (which will hopefully still be many).

No plans for the day - just relax!

Here is a blast from the past - a short video from my Japanese style mini-modular N scale shelf layout.

Pardon the bad quality, but the video was filmed with my atb that time already quite old digital camera and not a cam corder.

Happy times!
