NWP SWP. . .I'm going to go see an investment broker to start investing in stocks. . .
Save your money--a broker is a waste of money when you are first starting out. Besides, they will steer you towards the investments/funds that provide the largest incentives to the broker. Step one: Buy and read "The Richest Man in Babylon." Second, read an article or two on "dollar cost averaging." Third, open an account with a reputable internet broker (Fidelity, eTrade, etc.) and use dollar cost averaging to invest in an S&P Index Fund. Investing in the index fund provides built-in diversification and has the lowest fees.

SeeYou190Personally, I love Winter. It is one of my ten favorite days of the year.
Well, we're not too bad here in southern Ontario. We only have about 150 days of winter. All that does is make us appreciate the spring more!
I think one of the worst things about seasonal change is that it takes a while to get used to the colder temperatures. The first few days of cold weather in late November aren't really that cold but it seems to go right to your bones. On the flip side, when we get the same temperatures in the spring everyone is out in shorts and Ts even though it's only 50F!
Now if you really want to enjoy Canadian winter, you have to go for a polar bear swim on New Years Day. Chop a big hole in the ice and jump in! It'll cure your hemorrhoids and hangovers right quick! Never done it myself. I'm not that stupid!
Cheers!!

One of my employees spent two years in Antarctica. He went for a Polar Bear Swim in the 1990s on the 4th of July when it was Winter down there. He has pictures of it. He said after being in those conditions for six months it was not that cold.
Never for me.

Good evening Diners,
It was a good day for Bears fans. They clinched their division in the NFL, so folks around here are beaming with smiles.
Kevin: I share your sentiments about winter. There's not one thing that I like about it. The first winter I spent here in Chicago was the coldest ive ever been in my lifetime! When you live in someplace like LA for a long time, your blood thins out and when you go to a cold climate like Chicago, you just cannot get warm at all. The cold chills you through to the bone. Even that following summer, I'd wear my leather jacket in the office all day and then after work I'd just sit in my car with my jacket on and the windows rolled up for 15 minutes or so just trying to get warm. Fortunately, you do acclimate...in time, but that first year was miserable. And I still hate winter, with a passion!
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

I recall swimming in Lake Superior and it was more than too cold during the summer. I would not want to particpate in the Polar Bear Swim.

I know the feeling! We used to camp at Agawa Bay. In fact, that's where we spent our honeymoon. Dianne would go out and swim back and forth forever and I could barely walk in to my waist. People looked at her like she was insane. She claimed that she was forced to take swimming lessons in her youth, and the lessons started at 8:00 am in an unheated pool so Lake Superior was nothing special! She'll still go in swimming regardless of the water temp.
I do help out though. I always have warm hands and she always has cold hands, so I will gladly hold her hands whenever the opportunity presents itself.

May only be a temporary glitch? I hope that helps.

mornin' everyone!
Had a crazy-busy weekend here -- Christmas party on saturday, and then cleaning up on Sunday (amongst other small projects).
Today's entirely non-railroady, while I get some raw wood for endtables sanded and hopefully the first layer of polyurethane on top.
Every time I see people complaining about the "photo site of the month", I am so glad I went to hosting things myself.

Ed.... Thanks. I am using the same method I used since the Photobucket crazies. Back then, there was a long thread on that topic. In the thread, somebody explained how he posted with Flickr. I have used the same method ever since.
I'll try again here.

Oh, yeah, that's right! You live in Cape Coral... heh heh.
I was working for the newspaper there when the dual-water system was being debated, in 1989-1991. It was one of the first in the country. You would NOT BELIEVE the disinformation and scaremongering that went on during that debate. People said the pumps would reverse and make the toilets back up into your house, or that the filters would fail and spray fecal matter on your lawn, or that the system would spread the AIDS virus. The most ignorant stuff I've ever heard in my life.

You can't post directly from your computer (forums here don't allow uploading images, which makes things harder -- but with all the problems they have with just "logging in", probably better they don't also deal with hosting the images themselves).
For me, it's just as "easy" to use my PC as the "photo album", and then transfer only the handful of images I want to share over to the website.
Ultimately, it's the same steps -- just "where" the organizing happens is in different places for us.

Yeah, it was purported to be like poison. Now people think nothing of using the reclaimed irrigation water for car washing and water balloon fights! They use it to irrigate their vegetable gardens, and no one ever gets sick.

I took my own advice and went to Joey D's in Sarasota for a Chicago style hotdog yesterday. I must say, to me, they taste the same as the dogs in Chicago. That is probably because Joey D's uses nothing but genuine Vienna brand ingredients.

We stopped buying hot dogs a long time ago because of the nitrates but recently we tried Maple Leaf 'All Natural' weiners without preservatives and they are great. They cost another $0.50 per package but so what. Maple Leaf is a Canadian brand (how could you tell?) so you probably can't get them in the US, but I'm sure there must be preservative free hot dogs available. Anything to reduce the risk of cancer.
Good morning from a sunny and 13c West Coast. Gettin another blow moving in this evening, lost the power three times on Friday. The weather guessers are always dead on as to what and when the weather will be, just not good at predicting the intensity of the storms.
Rational thinking, my sister doesn't bring up the term anymore as I am always quick to point out the selective use of the term as it affects the way she conducts her life. My wife and I don't get rattled by much and are usually the ones that maintain control when it hits the fan. Rational thinking will overpower fear and other emotion if you tend to be a rational thinker in the first place.
Recirculating gray water is really a good idea that has seem to come into its own in the last few years. Our friends bought a 1960s era house on a well with septic and it was built with all the plumbing for gray water reuse even back then. They don't have any issues with water shortages, it is just the guy that built and lived in the house was a pioneering engineer on the matter.
Two of our good friends just finished dealing with her mother's estate. Back in the 1930s, her Dad bought three 65' x 110' lots on the West side of Vancouver. Back then it was still the boonies quite away from the downtown core. He built the family home on one lot and the mother was still there up to the time she died. In 1939 when the war broke out they put a Canso base nearby and her Dad built two small war restricted houses and rented them out to officers from the base. Shoot ahead to 2018, the original family home and the two other lots that still have what amounts to shacks on them were sold for $18,600,000.00. It all goes to our friend as she is an only child. They only have one child themselves, so I guess he will be buying a few new toys. Unfortunately, the husband has had heart issues and is past the point of taking full advantage of the windfall. They had a good upper-middle-class life, so no biggie.
We don't bring any pre-packaged food into the house. I had some wine and rum and Pepsi over the weekend and my body is telling me I have been poisoned. I use to drink wine every day but rarely touch the stuff now and even one glass will put my body into recovery mode. I put on six pounds just this weekend as my body goes into getting rid of the poison and not breaking down the good nutrients I have consumed. Nitrates will pop up your blood pressure 10 points instantly and have a long half-life. If you think you are having a heart attack eat some preserved deli meat and it will finish you off right away, it is the opposite of taking an aspirin. My BP is 110/65 constantly at 61. We will cook up fresh meats, slice them up and freeze them in meal size portions. Steak and eggs are quick with a little zip-lock of sliced up steak coming out of the freezer at breakfast.
Prepackaged food is full of so much crap for two reasons, one to make sure you buy more, two, to prevent it from going bad and making you sick and in turn suing them. Rational thinking! There's that term again.
Last year our seven-year-old Carrier furnace had a chunk of the heat exchanger fall out and nearly kill us all in our sleep. If not for our carbon monoxide alarms going off at four in the morning that would have been it. We put a new York furnace in and even in just seven years the efficiency is so much better, we were really surprised as we didn't think seven years would make much of a difference.
We also replaced our alarms. One year for Christmas we bought all our close family and friends good quality carbon monoxide alarms. How long they stayed plugged in or if they were ever plugged in at some of the homes we visit on a regular basis was interesting, to say the least. My wife has some really dysfunctional people on her side. Has anyone mentioned rational thinking?
Well, I can't procrastinate any longer, time to get on the bike. I'll burn off about 800 calories today and hopefully will sweat out the poison (I know it doesn't work that way) just makes me feel proactive saying that. The first 4km is really tough to get through usually. Today it will likely take 6km and then I am flying.
All the best to all.
Brent

Well it's holiday time and we seem to congregate a little bit more with our friends at this time.
We met our friends at Cowboys and we all had a great time as usual like we do every year. The prime rib was on the venue for Judy and I.
We stayed after. Why wouldn't you? Good friends and holiday cheer. That's what I'm talking about.
Mark won 250 on pull-tabs. Judy only won 50 but that's all good. Tim won a meat raffle..... Good people and good friends, that's what it's all about at holiday time..... Family is a given but you have to make time for your friends
A night of fun with your friends is worth more than weight in gold. The more memories you add with friends is priceless.... It is so good for you to laugh.

Make sure you make time for friends

Evening folks,
I was wondering if any of the old Alco Works in Schenectady are still standing and if what's left is worth making the side trip for?
Well my brother asked for those "Nerf" guns, err blasters, for Christmas so I'm going on Ebay to pick one up for myself, for "national defense" purposes, they can be had for under 10 bucks there, I wonder why any parent would spend 50+ bucks on the same guns "new"
Hopefully Wednesday afternoon my truck will be ready, hopefully...
I'll be back later.

Seems like interweb problems are getting worse by the day. I'm having lots of odd behavior across several sites and through different web hosts.
It would be neat to see the site of the old Alco plant, though. Sort of a pilgrimage to a hallowed site.
