Gidday Chloe, while this may well be a virtual Diner, I still think it would be best if I limited myself to a small slice of Garry’s Kentucky Derby Pie, please.Sigh

Yes, the Derby would be another thing that puts Kentucky on the international map.

I must admit that “Currywurst and Fries” didn’t sound much like a German traditional dish to me Ulrich, until I read up on it. I can see how the dish would have put a little zing into the life of a resident of an austere post war Berlin.

I’m not sure how far back goes the New Zealand version of Curried Sausages but the big difference is that the sausages were cooked in the simmering curry sauce and served on rice. With the more recent introduction of curry pastes from the Indian Subcontinent and Thailand, the recipe is rather mild but I still enjoy it from time to time.

I’m a follower of the Darwin Awards and often think those trying to outrun trains at level crossings would be doing the gene pool a favour if they failed. However, I know a couple of locomotive drivers who have been involved in fatal crossing accidents, and how it’s affected them, so really, I wish the idiots in motor vehicles would learn better!

Though looking at these two posters, the NZR one from 1927 (top), and guessing that the US one is from the same era, it shows that we can be very slow learners.

How on earth can you make plans to change your engine in two years? If it ain´t broke, don´t fix it! How about a little less planning and more doing?

Come on Ulrich! Let the guy have a little fun!! Hopping up an engine is a very rewarding experience, especially if you are a gear head like Steven is. Would you rather he get fat playing video games? Of course not.

Steven:

I have to agree with Ulrich. Using 5W30 in a warm climate doesn't make a lot of sense to me, especially in an engine with some miles on it. I ran 5W20 in my MGB but only during the Canadian winter. The rest of the year I ran 20W50 (I'm not suggesting 20W50 for your truck). Use what Ford says to use in your climate.

The 302 is fine, I ended up getting Pennzoil 5w30 High Mileage, for 18 bucks for 5 quarts, the filter was 10 so I only spent 30 bucks on it.

I had the oil changed in under 15 minutes, it's running good no problems.

I'm planning to replace it but that will probably be in one or two years, I'm working on getting a 351w to work on and get hot rodded before swapping it in. Oil is expensive though! At oriellys it was 25 bucks for a 5q jug! And that was the cheapest!

I tailgated with my church at the local high school football game.

Talked to some people, saw most of the kids from my Sunday school class.

Well I'll be around, not much going on. Later!

Night Diners

I've been doing more modeling and less reading the last few days but I took a quick skim through before I hit the rack.

Thanks Brent I should have got that shot. At least I didn't get the Superbad flu though.

Thanks JaBear I'm glad you shook It off. Being sick ain't no fun. I'm on my way out of the woods here.

Thanks Garry, a compliment is always appreciated.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, the gang and I will take a Crown Royal with a Beer chaser and give Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they want.

Wife is doing much better! If she gets any better I will have to kill her! Smile, Wink & Grin Now the good news she can get out of bed much better than yesterday, walking more normal and not using the walker as a crutch but to keep her stable.

Reason I will have to kill her? She likes being waited on and I won't do it! She was in the bathroom cleaning her faces and when she was done she wanted me to hang up the wash cloth. Told her, well turn around and do it. Said she could not turn around in the bathroom on her walker and started calling me names and hoped I get in her shape! I just looked at her. Then she turned around and hung up the wash cloth! Laugh Man I am a jerk, making the poor woman do things she can do! Whistling

Steven I am confused.Confused Why do you want to spend $40.00 on oil for a engine you want to replaces? Does the 302 have a speical need besides being a Ford? Laugh What do you hope to gain if anything?

When I bought my 69 Charger R/T the BB had 125,000 miles on it and had the death rattles. Nothing broken but close to worn out. I replaced the heads and timing chain, added slick 50 and started running Mobile 1. Stopped by at the time my engine bulider and he heard the 69 Charger before and after. He asked me "did you go a head and replaced the engine?" Told him no and told him what I did. He just shook his head!

Till I know what you are looking to gain I am a little at a lost. I swear by slick 50 and well worth it cost! If you want to know why I swear by slick 50 let me know and I will post about it.

 Later Ken

Good evening follks.  Spent some time under the layout wiring things.  I bought a CMR turntable off ebay some time ago and I have been scenicking around it.  Today I did a test hook up.

The bogie wheels on each side supply power to separte bridge rails.  One bridge rail had no power.  On my model, the bogie wheels are ball bearings on brass hollow axles and a wire from the axle connect to the rail.

The PO might have glued the bearing to the axle, because there is no electrical continuity between the axle and the bearing.  The axle doesn't budge on the bearing.

Newer models have a brass wiper that contacts both wheels (bearings)

The PO also shimmed the wheels to raise the bridge.  That appears to have been neccesary for the rails to clear the edge of the pit, but I don't know why that was necessary.

I called CMR and the guy on duty wasn't familiar enough with the turntable to be of any help, but the boss was out of the office and would call me back next week.

Garry,

They have since installed gates at Pines road and closed 34th street as it no longer connects with Pines. That keeps most of the people from running the crossing.

MLC. ... Nice videos .  ... The lead unit in the first video is a PAL road slug mated with a GP40. .. .in the second video,   I saw some drivers foolishly driving their cars in front of trains at the crossings.  One motor cycle guy apparently changed his mind at the last second before he would have tangled with a BNSF locomotive.

TF ... Your bridge project looks good.

How about some Kentucky Derby Pie today ?

"Derby pie is a chocolate and walnut tart in a pie shell with a pastry dough crust. It is made with walnuts and chocolate chips. The pie was created in the Melrose Inn of Prospect, Kentucky, United States, by George Kern with the help of his parents. It is often associated with the Kentucky Derby.Wikipedia "

This is what I was going to put in.

.

Once again, you are getting terrible advice from somewhere.

.

Diesel engine oil, especially any top quality oil made for modern diesel engines, and Rotella is fine oil, is not the correct choice for gasoline engines.

.

Modern heavy duty diesel engines (which Rotella is made for) use an Oxidation Catalyst, Particulate Filter, and SCR Catalyst in the exhaust aftertreatment system. The additive package in these oils has changed significantly so they do not produce any harmful combustion by-products that will hard these expensive components.

.

The content of the additive package makes these oils unsuitable for use in any spark ignited reciprocating piston engine.

.

Use what the vehicle manufacturer recommends, and nothing else.

.

Stop with all this gear-head nonsense and take care of your vehicle properly. If you do, it will take care of you.

.

Track fiddler
I got sick of being in bed today being sick so I got up to work on my bridge a little bit.

Track fiddler, hope you’re getting over your flu. Even though I’d had a flu shot, I still came down with a dose, which is why I was absent from the diner, unfortunately not on vacation!!  (Her-in-doors was similarly afflicted, we made for a great pair!!)Sigh

Flu shots are not the be all and end all, as there are various strains of the dreaded lurgy lurking round the world at the same time, but as I’ve been reliably informed by several trustworthy and knowledgeable medical types, I’d have been hit really hard if I hadn’t had the shot.

What made it worse is that my current w**k contract has me as the responsible certifying engineer for a business that has staff, so I was crawling into w**k when I would have rather been in bed with the blankets pulled over my head. I’m still not 100% but able to recognise the fun side of life again.

Now, Sheriff Steven has supplied the Diner, with “German” potato salad, delicious hearth bread, (my Grandma used to make really crusty bread which she baked in earthenware flower pots), and rum balls, and angelob has chipped in with peperoni pizza, and the Diners visit to Tennessee and Kentucky has been the best hosted since Ulrichs hosted European Adventures.
So, a big thanks, in particular to MLC, Garry and Ed.

BUT you Chaps obviously can’t see the wood from the trees, because, from an outsiders point of view, here we are two thirds through the month, and there has been not one mention of what has made Kentucky great and has brought it into the consciousness of the inhabitants of at least 118 nations around the world, that being of course, Kentucky Fried Chicken!

The first one opened in Auckland in 1971, (I think it was the first US fast food franchise in New Zealand), and I’m sure it was on a trip to visit relatives in Auckland in 72 that was the first time I had the Colonels “finger lickin good” chicken. The irony was that this ad was on TV long before Kentucky Fried Chicken was available in my then home in Southland. (In fact I had left before one had opened.)

And here’s a current photo of one of the two KFC down in the village.

I once blew a relationship with a girl in high school. She did go on a date with me but I made two mistakes. First, I got into a car accident the day of the date. Nothing serious, just a busted headlight and some fender damage. Not my fault, and I was able to patch the car up so it was driveable, but I made the stupid mistake of telling her mother about the accident when I picked her up.

The second mistake was that I took her to see 'The Exorcist' on the first date. She kept her eyes closed and covered her ears for most of the movie. I was laughing (at the movie, not her).

She wouldn't go on a second date with me. She told me her mother wouldn't allow her to. Wonder why?

Well..... When I got there, Imagine my suprize, when an elderly Japanese man opened the door. I could see inside the house, and his entire family was at the dinner table. ( At least I got the time right. L O L  ) No trace of the girl that had invited me.

Now it was a low number address ( I was right on the dividing line of NE / SE ) so I figured I went 3 block's the wrong way. I walked 6 block's the other way and found the CORRECT address again..... only this time , it was a vacant lot !!!

Pretty sure she didn't actually want to eat with me.

I read using "diesel" oil is actually good for an engine as long as it's got a "SN" certification, which the oil I'm getting does, plus it's on sale for 14 bucks a gallon.

I'm afraid that I have to agree with Little Timmy. Don't believe everything that you read. I'm not sure how many older pickup trucks are still on the road doing just fine on regular engine oil, but there are more than a couple. Why reinvent the wheel? Why take the chance??

This is the API certification for that oil.

  • Warranty:  Manufacturer's Defect Warranty
  • Unit of Measure:  Each
  • UPC:  21400560703
  • Oil Composition:  Conventional
  • Viscosity Grade/Weight:  10W-30
  • Container Size:  1 Quart
  • High Mileage:  No
  • ACEA Specification:  E9
  • API Designation:  CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, SN
  • Fuel Type:  Diesel
  • Racing:  No
  • Viscosity Index:  141
  • GM Dexos(TM) Compatible:  No

Introduced in October 2010, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

The OEM requiment for oil is a SH and CD.

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please. Give Ulrich, Rick and Steven a RBF.

Wife, 2 steps forward, then one step back. But she knew it was going to be this way, well sort of. Whistling Daughter watched over some today so I could get some needed running done, it was good to be away from the house for a while.

Kelly the theropist will be at the house between 9:00 and 9:30 AM Friday. Wife is not happy about the time but I am. Get the first workout done early.

Ed Ran the Canadian National Heavy Pullman car for the first time tonight. While it is a little stiff as far as rolling, it tracks great.

Evening Diners

I got sick of being in bed today being sick so I got up to work on my bridge a little bit.

I had to cut the foam away and get the bridge down on the ground so I can see exactly where my footings are going so my pillars are straight.

You can see with the temporary bamboo skewers for reference that the footings are lined up within reason. They can be adjusted a little bit before I glue them in permanently.

I'm hoping to put the bridge shoes on the bridge with the support plates and install the pillars tomorrow. I'll give you an update picture if I doWink
