The staff - that´s Zoe, Chloe, Flo, Janie, and Brunhilda - is very friendly and will serve up plenty of virtual food with a smile. Just don´t forget to leave a generous tip!
Each month, the Diner will be parked in a different location at places all over the world. This month, the Diner is located in
- well, no particular location has yet been chosen, so Vinnie and his staff are still open for suggestions! Mine would be Colorado, hoping that the Durango & Silverton RR has commenced steam services to Silverton! I went on this trip in 1974, when the line was still operated by the D&RGW, but don´t mind reliving that wonderful experience!
At the begiining of each month, it is also the time to pay our respect to friends no longer with us

I was fortunate to ride the line in 1966 and again in '68. There was still a lot of dual-gauge and narrow gauge trackage still visible back then.

THE KITCHEN REMODEL IS DONE! Yes, finally it is complete!
It came in on budget, but 3 months late.
Next phase is the guest bathroom and guest bedroom. That will be followed by the Master Bedroom Suite, and then the trainroom. Somewhere along the way we need new windows, a garage door, and paint.
After all that, the STRATTON & GILLETTE will be under construction.

We are starting a major renovation on Tuesday. We are having the wall taken out between the kitchen and the dining room. It is a supporting wall so that complicates things a bit. I won't be able to have a continuous ceiling as I had hoped. I am not doing the work. 15 years ago I would have done everything myself but, alas, no more. I had a hard time just taking down the drapes.

Moving the Diner made me hungry! It´s sunday - time for my wholesome, unhealthy, high-cholesterol, greasy but tasty breakfast of scrambled eggs, fried bacon, buttered toast & jams, a stack of pancakes w/maple syrup, OJ and coffee in an IV bag, as I did not get much sleep last night! Thank you, Brunhilda!
Kevin - that´s a nice looking kitchen and an excellent job you have done! When we moved into our apartment, the kitchen furniture was falling apart, the refridgerator had died of old age and the range was covered in grease and dust, yet the landlord thought it was still OK. I made him rip it out and I put a new one in - at my expense, which ate up whatever money we had left at that time. In Germany, apartments usually do not come with a furnished kitchen and it is up to the tenenat to take care of that. When we eventually move out of this place, we will leave the kitchen furniture and appliance in the apartment. It just doesn´t make sense to take the stuff with us - after more than 10 years of service.
No plans for the day - only to stay afloat in this hot weather we have again!

I just looked at the Durango and Silverton website. They have resumed operations following the devasttning wildfire. They will use diesel power for now.
It's not a good year to ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. It will be shutdown for the 2018 season for major repairs.
The Georgetown Loop Railroad is operating which is very nice.
In past years, I have been on all three of those.
I model the Burlington Railroad which had extensive operations in Colorado.
The Denver Zephyr was a great way to get to Denver, CO from Chicago, IL. ... Photo in Illinois of DZ headed to Denver.
The fox was back on the deck. I can tell by the poop he deposited. Not happy with that.
Dave .... You were asking if we are in the country. .... Yes, we are in the country, and are located on a large man-made lake. It is the Cumberland River with a dam to make the lake. The nearest town is 12 miles away with a population of 2600. There are two larger towns if we drive 30 or 40 miles.
Here is a view from our property to the lake. You can see a tow boat pushing barges in the distance. The Cumberland River flows from eastern Kentucky through Nashville, TN, and connects with the Ohio River in Western Kentucky.

Lobster this evening, with Chibata bread and a salad; with strawberries from the garden and ice cream for dessert. So we have a more-or-less Red and White theme going through the day (wore my Canada Day tie to church which was fun) Better go get changed from gardening clothes for dinner eh!

Busy day, went to church, went to the local drive in for lunch, went to Home Depot, got some fence boards, went to an estate sale, bought some furniture for when I move out of the house, put the fence boards up, two and a half sections, did some yard work, mowed the grass, trimmed a few limbs, and now I'm going to go in for the day.
Tomorrow I have to drive and rain is in the forecast!

Evening All!
Interesting day at w*rk. Electrical blip in the morning soured everything for the rest of the day. Managed to knock out the refrigeration system and we lost a lot of foodstuffs. When I left we had a refer trailer and were trying to save some frozen stuff. (I won't know exactly how bad until probably Wednesday.) This is the worst refrigeration failure that I ever remember and I have worked there for a number of years.
Hobby Front: If everything goes right, I should have layout sections in town tomorrow. As I have mentioned previously, there are 5 sections of various sizes. (Three aren't even ccompletely assembled.) I also got the leveling feet on Saturday. (The T-nuts should be here tomorrow as well.)

Track Fiddler ... I saw your DW&P locomotive and caboose in WPF. . I recall when CN’s US railroads did a three way locomotive swap. The DW&P Alco RS11’s ( like your new locomotive) went to Central Vermont. CV sent EMD GP9’s to Grand Trunk Western. GTW sent SD40’s to DW&P. The SD40’s were a better choice of engines than RS11’s on the DW&P. DW&P was entirely a bridge railroad between its junction with CN at the Canadian border and Duluth where it interchanged with US railroads . That was before CN acquired Wisconsin Central Which had been one of the connections at Duluth.

You underestimate us if you think we will only be celebrating on Monday! Most everyone gets the Monday off but the real reason (that the officials won't admit to) is that we started partying on Friday afternoon and continued right through Saturday and Sunday. They give us Monday off so that we can recover!!

The only time I was in Colorado was a stop over in Denver airport on our way back from San Fransico to Edmonton (please don't look at the map - it's an airline thing! )

Painted the Berichan Station awning extension roofs, and added the supports last night.
Today they get glued in place and the station returnes to the layout. I think that it's about time I began the scenery for the hills and do some rock castings. To that end I've rescued a few plastic containers from the recycle to store the castings grouped by type.
About time to get some lunch.
I am fairly new to the forum so I just wanted to stop in and say hi. This May I got back into the hobby after a 10 year absence which was caused by college and law school (which both caused a lack of money and time). I have also switched from the 3 rail O of my childhood down to N, mostly because I live in Philadelphia with roommates so my layout had to fit in my bedroom somewhere.
My layout is small but is supposed to be an homage to the Schuylkill River valley near Manayunk and Gladwyne. The time period of the layout is pretty fluid but my focus is late Reading early Conrail.
Also, I FINISHED BALLASTING LAST NIGHT! I might have done a little happy dance and said some things which if repeated would violate forum rules.

Yesterday was one of those all day lounge days for me. Every once in awhile you need one of those. I think because it was so hot and humid all last week it took just about everything out of me. Having my new Model Railroader issue was convenient as I did a lot of reading.
Ulrich thanks for starting the diner for us. I have spent some time on the Colorado River.... just putting in a request, maybe the diner can be in Nashville Tennessee in September.
Johnny Cash February 26th 1932 - September 12th 2003. In memory of the Man in Black. Also the man who loved trains to the point where almost all his songs had the sound of a steam engine in the background. I have read Johnny's favorite restaurants were TGI Fridays, Valentino's, Mario's, and the most recent was CenterPoint barbecue.
Kevin congratulations on your new kitchen you sure did a great job.
John you have talent and it shows. I really like that red snowblower. Hopefully you built that in the fall. You know the saying build-it-and-they-will-come. I'm sure that applies for snow as well.
Garry thanks for the Railroad history lesson. I did not know any of that. Maybe this explains why I have a hard time finding any Wisconsin Central that fits with my modeling era.
(Edit) Dave and Ed Hopefully all Canadians can have a lounge day today like I had on Sunday. I always have Sunday and Monday off but today is my errand running day....

As strange as that sounds, Denver is a regional hub for quite a few different things. (People, mail, freight, etc.)

These are the Redstone coke ovens west of Aspen. Coal came by narrow gauge and left as coke on the standard gauge Crystal River RR.
This is the road coming south toward Durango. I think this is before the town of Ouray.
The Strater and the Gen Palmer are two of the old hotels that have been refurbished in Durango. I recommend the Palmer as being the nicer of the two and right next to the train station.

Henry - thanks for the pictures! I have two books of that region. One is Len Shoemaker´s beautiful history of the Roaring Fork Valley and the other one the Crystal River Pictorial by Dell A. McCoy. Both books a very dear to me and I often just look at the beautiful and atmospheric pictures.
Nothing really happened today, which makes it a good day. I am not keen on surprises these days.

I was too hasty in saying "all" i had to do to finish the station with new awnings was to glue them on. After that (and they are on and the glue drying) the whole roof has to be painted so everything matches. Then white edgeing will be painted on the platform and white lines (decal strips) go on the platform edges. So, a bit more yet...
Ulrich: Glad you had a less eventful day. Belated thanks for loooking after the Diner logistics month on month, and thanks for the good wishes re our nation's bd. We're certainly happy we made the move from the UK, although we thought we were headed for NZ, but things changed!
Afternoon folks!
I'm sitting here at the 'puter enjoying the airconditioning in the house! Currently 93°F and humid outside. Went over to the fieldhouse for my morning walk. Got their about 10:30 and they still had the big outdoor sliding door wide open... It was already in the high 80's by then. Sweat was running off me after the first 8 laps. About that time they decided to closed the door and leave the heat increase outside but it was already very hot in there. I did keep myself hydrated by stopping at the drinking fountain several times. Got my 20 laps (3.7 miles) in with good time. I considered taking another few minutes rest and doing two more laps which would have given me my next goal of 4 miles walking over there each time. Hope to meet that within the next couple of weeks. They used to run the air conditioning during the summer over there. Haven't used it yet for the main part of the building. Still better than hoofing around outside!
May get some thunderboomers this afternoon. Already looking funny to the East of me.

Kevin Looks good! How much did the Stove set you back? Guessing it is one that is not hot to the touch when on.
Afraid Sparkie's time is coming sooner than we want. Sparkie is a American Eskmio that we got from a American Eskimo Rescoue when he was 10. He is going on 15 this year, Tiff are last American Eskimo past at 17. Last night my post was cut short because wife was taking him out and he fell and could not stand up. (he was on a title floor) I got him standing on carpet and then outside and he did his business and seemed sort of Ok. I have seen this before with two other dogs. Going to try adding Glucosamine to his food. Helped Tiff the second American Eskimo a lot, seem to shave 4 years off her age.
While at the Vet I saw my first Irish Wolfhound in years. I miss my girls Sonya and Shaddy. Both Irish Wolfhound's. Wife say's "you cannot have another one!" Hum, guess she does not help pick the pup next time when it is time.
