BigDaddy

YGW Toby came around the kitchen at dinner looking for things falling on the floor.  He is supposed to be strictly confined for 2 weeks then gradually we can expand his walks.  He is used to long walks so a trip around the yard hardly triggers the walkies reflex.

Remember when this July thread began? ... We are to be on the Rocky Mountaineer. I finally scanned photos of our trip on the train in 2002.

Then the train had its original paint scheme of white and blue. It had mostly single level coaches leading some big dome cars. We rode from Vancouver to Calgary. The first day, was in BC along the CN and CP jointly operated parallel tracks on oposite sides of the river.  Our train ran between freight tains and we were at freight train speeds. It took one day to get to Kamloops where we spent the night in a hotel, and then we continued eastward on CP tracks to Calagary.

We had the best seats on the train. We had the front row of the first of the dome cars, and we could look over the roofs of the coaches.

First photos show us leaving Vancouver. We passed a CN freight train that was departing Vncouver and would follow us to Kamloops.

To be continued ..............

Continuing ....

Approaching Kamloops where it apparently it is the desert of Canada.

After Kamloops, the train heads east on CP. At Revelstroke, CP has extra tracks to hold trains awaiting the eastbound trip over the mountains.

...

Next three photos are the spectacular Stoney Creek Bridge.

Looking down from the bridge.

....

To continue.

Yes there is food in the pantry. We have enough for another week. Thanks for the offer for a BBQ.

DJ- You are sure the Pigeon Creek layout will support three to fours layers of track? Or did I misread the post?

Garry- I love those pictures thru the Mountaineer. Thanks for sharing.

Good Evening!

Had a pretty bad day today. The pain was so bad Petra had to take me to the ER. There was some improvement after a prolonged nap at noon - just enough to let me run the daily mixed local on my layout.

I hope to be in a better shape tomorrow - it´s our 33rd wedding anniversary!

Garry  - very nice pictures, thanks for sharing!

Heading for the hay in a few moments, although it is still quite early. I am dead tired.

The rule is "no politics," not "no politics unless you warn people that there will be politics."

It couldn't be any clearer.

Ulrich, Angel, and YGW.  Thanks for commenting on the Rocky Mountaineer trip photos.   YGW, the big domes are air conditioned or heated to a comfortable temperature inside.

The trip was like a cruise but on rails instead of at sea.  They fed us very well. We had a champagne breakfast served while we  departed Vancouver for example.

All set up at the Pidgeon Creek R&D layout. Cutting up old and inexpensive rolling stock and locomotives for parts and the rest goes into trash pick up tomorrow. Keeping wheels, small plastic components of significance, and all metal parts. Old plastic couplers in the trash too.

By week's end I should have one or two more folding tables like the three under Pidgeon Creek. Will end the evening off with Sarah Brightman, an evening coffee, and some model railroad database data entry.

Evening Diners,

Ulrich- Happy 33rd Wedding Anniversary.

I been looking at and researching some Chessie System diesels for my small layout. I limited myself to 6 locomotives. The longest train will be 2 diesels, 8 cars with a caboose.

It's helping me being occupied during boredom. I'm very getting interesting in my small layout if it works out it will expand in a larger on.

Good Morning!

It´s not only Petra´s and my 33rd wedding anniversary today, but the day I posted my post #9,500! For either reason we won´t have much of a celebration. If my health permits, we will go out for dinner tonight, most likely our favourite Chinese place.

July has proven to be the wettest month since weather is being recorded in our neck of the woods. No improvement in sight, so we can only hope for some nicer days in August.

Make it a good day!

Garry, What a great set of photos! Yes I got to ride that same trackage back in '74 Big Smile

I'd sure like to see more "train stuff" discussed, with a sprinkling of bird watching, gardening, weather, trivia, pets, history, the occasional funny stuff and those great photos of the wonderful food that Steven offers, and our general well-being — or lack thereof — if someone is feeling down-in-the-dumps or had a particularly bad day. Talking about it can help. I try very hard to keep an upbeat and positive demeanor. Glass half-full and all that Smile  Beer

CONGRATULATIONS Ulrich!!! I envy you. This October would have been my 40th if my wife had not passed away back in 1986. My present wife is the most wonderful person and I am so thankful to have met her. Sometimes tragedy can lead to something beautiful. It all has to be kept in balance and perspective.

Ed - WOW how cool you got to work on one of the big guns ! Did you all get to test fire it ?

Well, no. We didn't do any firing. The barrel was originally 45 feet. It was shortened and plugged. The remaining vessel was used as a pressure chamber where molds of powdered tungsten or molybdenum were subjected to 40,000 psi in a process that sintered the metal and then that shape could be further heated (1850°C) into a fused solid. There were only 40 Mark 5 guns made. We have #37 and #38.

Here's what one of them looked like upon delivery in a NYC 50' gondola in the fall of 1959.

It would make for an interesting open-load to model. AMB Laserkit makes a full length 16" gun.

Morning Flo. I'll have crispy bacon and scrambled eggs with whole wheat toast and those tasty home fries. Strawberry jam would be nice and a hot cup of coffee. Don't tell my wife if she happens to pop in later.

My new Seagull guitar buckled under the heat and humidity on the weekend. Strings are 1/2 inch off the fretboard at the 12th fret - never seen anything like it for a 2-month-old guitar! Neither has the music store. Of course it is still under warranty so we'll see what happens. In the meantime, I tuned up my nice Kala ukulele with built-in pickup and am learning some new tunes for the next time I play at Stayner's on the Halifax waterfront (when my wife returns from Calgary).

Beagle is laying beside me wanting a belly rub and husky is recovering from TPLO surgery quite well. She can get up on the old couch to sleep at night and she is eating from her dish now (I had to hand feed her for a week).

Lots of fun activities planed at Pidgeon Creek R&D layout today. Have a good one everyone! DJ

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 Special this morning.  Over easy on the eggs, homefries, bacon, and a double order of the sourdough toast.  Oh. a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast organic, fair traded coffee would go nicely as well.

I often get the chance to visit layouts as the Superintendent of the Lakeshores Division, NMRA.  At my house I never take off my shoes when I come inside unless they have gotten obviously muddy.  If I do, then I put on another pair of shoes...  You need shoes on when you go down to my trainroom to protect your feet (and in the upstairs as well....).  But, often (if fact very often in Canada) I see a sign by the door instructing me to remove my shoes before proceeding further.  To me that is a silly rule, but since I am a guest in someone elses home and I respect their right to make the rules, I obligingly remove my shoes before I enter.

This forum is most graciously provided to us to use by Kalmbach Publishing.  It belongs to them!  Therefore they can make the rules that we are expected to abide by.  Doesn't make any difference if we don't like the rules, we are expected as guests in their "home" to follow their rules.  Not to is both rude and shows the character of the person not following the rules...  (At least that is what I taught in Scouts: "A Scout is Courteous!")  I try to follow that wherever I am.  And I enjoy the privilege of being a member and contributer here.  We all mess up from time to time (I include myself here), but don't be upset because they don't let you say and do whatever you want!  I got my fill of spoiled brat little kids back when I was teaching and we need to be a bit more adult.  (I have always found it interesting that childish, obscene language is called Adult Language when it is anything but...)

I'm Sure that Cousin Vinnie will be arriving to "clean up" soon, and that should take care of the problem for the moment.  I left a similar forum accross the street due to some very offensive and disgusting political crap back in 2008.  Took many years for me to stop back in and say hi over there.  I for one, appreciate the excellent moderation and the "rules" that we have in here!

Ulrich, I hope you and your "Better Half" have a wonderful anniversary!!!  Wow 33 years.  That is great!  Hope you may have many more, my friend!

Good afternoon Diners: Very welcome rain Monday night / Tuesday. In fact Tuesday was what in Scotland might be referred to as Driech. (Not as dire as Ulrich’s version Smile, Wink & Grin) Did get weed-killer blasted path to the veggie garden cleared ready for fresh gravel – so that’s not too bad.

Did not work on the sectional layout this weekend because it was too darned hot.  I was looking for some decals I had stashed in a safe place; finally found them on Sunday.  I have been looking for them for 4 weeks.  Guess they were safe?
…Have to do a similar search for long-stored decals as I need some small white numerals, which I’m hoping may be left on a scrap of a car data sheet

Garry:  Those pics from the Mountaineer bring back memories of when my MIL treated us all to the Vancouver – Edmonton ride (on VIA) Clever of them to stage the boring bit at night too! They even scheduled a stop or two along the way (a particularly beautiful falls comes to mind, as well as the “Last Spike” site at Craigellachie, British Columbia  Thanks for posting.

Heat and humidity wreak havoc on the tuning of a piano. They will cause the case and/or the plate to expand/contract which affect the tuning. Extreme dryness has it's own threat as it can dry out the pin block to the point that the pins loosen up and it is impossible for a piano to keep it's tune.

A bit of trivia for you--the combined pressure of all of the strings in a piano is approximately 18 tons. That is more that the weight of six Cadillac Escalades.
